Thanks for posting a clean and concise video. I use my Honda EU2000i generator at least once a year to announce a 4th of July parade for the City of Lake Forest (CA) and it was running rough. Didn't even know how to describe the noise it was making beyond it wasn't running smoothly. Now I know rough idle and surging. Took me longer to go to Walmart and get the carburetor cleaner and compressed air (which you need to be 18 years old to purchase - who knew?) than it did to take apart, clean, and reassemble . . . maybe 20 minutes max. My 10 year old generator is, once again, purring like a kitten. Should make you feel good that a video you posted about four years ago is still helping people around the world. Much appreciated.
Worked for me! My 18-month old log splitter has a GX200 Honda engine, and was proving difficult to start, was surging at low speed, and would then cut out when the speed was reduced to an idle. Removing the idle jet (size #38), cleaning it out with a 0.35mm diameter strand of wire, and then using an ultrasonic cleaner and carb cleaner, got it running perfectly! Many thanks!
Thank you! This was an easy fix - once you laid it all out! For any guitar players out there the wire size that worked for me was an acoustic guitar light gauge E string (0.012). I tried a 0.013, but that felt too big and I didn't want to force it. Many thanks for an excellent video. Well Done!
thank you. this absolutely solved my Honda 2000 gen surge problem. took me about a hour. jet was blocked and used a bristle from a wire brush. fit perfectly. local service knew prob and wanted 1 1/2 hrs plus parts if needed. $120 average as their rate is $80 Hr. thanks again for the great and easy instructional video. Paul

first used the 2000i to run my mother's oxygen concentrator in a 3 day power outage. I ran pure gasoline. Then just let it sit with gasoline in the tank for, sole caregiver, years, like 7 or 8 years. A storm, trees down, tore off my electrical mast. The gas went bad, I poured it out , put in fresh pure gas and it started and ran. now running gas with ethanol to try and clean the varnish out. still a bit of a surging at times. i AM GRATEFUL that my "neglect" was "mitigated". now know the fix
Thank you for your video. I thought I was being so smart when I drained the fuel on my generator but forgot to drain the float bowl 🤨. After watching your video I did as you instructed and it now works perfect. Thanks again.
Thanks for that, I'm going to have a go on my Loncin this weekend, same issue, same carb, left in the garden for 4 years so it's a miracle it runs at all!
The only issue I had was when I pried out the jet, the o-ring remained in the carburetor. I had to use a bent paper clip as a pick to get it out and reinstall it on the jet. A bit of a PITA but once I got it back together, no more surging!! Thank you
I'm surprised no one's answered this yet, but you just use a bread tie! Strip the paper off the bread tie and rock on. Is the exact size for almost any carb cleaning you need to do.
Honda GX 630 pressure washer with only 85hrs On it started surging and backfiring soon as I let off the trigger and went into idle.. I replaced both coils, new fuel pump, new spark plugs, I even pulled out the pilot jet's and blew them out with compressed air.. put it all back together and still did the same thing backfiring and surging.. I watched this video followed his advice used the needle from a wire brush put it back together and it ran smooth as silk on idle.. that's one trick I'll never forget.. 👍
This worked like a charm! Thank you! I had just cleaned the main jets only to find that my generator was still surging. Of course I hadn't cleaned the idle jet! I tried a twist tie but it was too thick. So I looked around on my untidy workbench, and spotted a set of guitar strings (who knows why I kept them) but one of them did the trick.
Just wanted to say thank you VERY much, I found other videos on how clean the jets, but mine was still the same. It now runs like a dream again. Thanks
I used a welding torch tip cleaner to fix mine. It has around a dozen different size wires. I found one that fit my jet perfect. You can grab a torch tip cleaner at Home Depot for a couple of bucks!
Dont use wire clean tips. Consult a dealer for proper carb cleaning. (I'm a yamaha, mercury, arctic cat, Polaris, stihl dealer. Improper carb cleaning techniques can cost you a carburetor. Some carbs cost over $700...be careful on internet info
Thank you so much for your information I was about to take my generator to the local Honda centre and they said it would be about $250 to get into the carburetter to fix that problem I did it literally in 15 minutes thank you so much
Thanks for the video. I never knew the jet was so easy to remove in honda carbs. I have a slightly bigger model of generator and the carb is virtually the same. Best part for me was I had easier access to the carb without having to unscrew it from the engine first.
Great video! I’ve been researching this problem for quite some time and didn’t want to have to empty the gas tank to fix…even though that would still be a good idea. Could do in 10 minutes now that I’ve done it. Thank you!!
Same problem occurred with my generator which wasn't used for almost for year and a half. Thanks. I may not be able to do myself. At least I know the problem now and call the service technician.
@@mmcgee1231 worked on mine last year and going to do again this year. Thought I drained everything but apparently not. I have the 2200i and the 2200i companion.
Love the video as for the wire I laughed because I have used wire brush bristle many times. But at any hardware store you should be able to find a torch tip cleaner kit. It has varying sizes and comes in a small case they fit in the palm of your hand but each wire has ribs on it that helped you clean out the sides Of the opening as well. There are typically used for cleaning welding torch tips
I used white out to mark the idler screw..and wire brush bristle ... comprende amigo !! I left the bristle back of the access cover case need it again..
Look for an acetylene torch tip file cleaner in your local home improvement store (welding supplies), it has very small wire files of different sizes in it that prove quite useful for all the jets in a carb. CAUTION THESE ARE FILES FOR TORCH TIP CLEANING AND WILL FILE HOLES BIGGER if your not careful, great tool to have on hand.
Interesting - Thank you for the wire tip. Do you think it would run badly if the jet was worn larger from a larger wire? -- I haven't encountered the issue but this should save some $$ - especially since my local repair shop didn't survive the COVID shutdown.
Great video, will definitely try that. I have a surging generator that is outputting very low wattage (less than 100w) under load. Could this surging be the cause of that problem?
Super-newbie question of the day: I presume that one should drain all of the old gas prior to this repair or the problem would recur fairly quickly, correct? My Honda EU3000is and I thank you very much for this great video! Cheers.
I liked the price and the power rating I haven’t started it yet but it seems like a beefy machine. Like the brand name. What I didn’t like was I was promised a Bonus of a free cover if I filled out a review, tried and failed. Tried Customer Service and got no help. Hope they will be there if i really need them.
i saw this video Im in mexico, my honda EU 20i is running fine but at the time something demands more than 1000 watts it surges and protrcys it self, my other twin honda eu 20i doesnt do that , it does give the power in a blink time, i have gone through all the steps and still does it
I was most interested in your 4 7/8" turns on the idle screw. Mine had been messed around with by the previous owner and it was 4 1/8" turns. I dismantled and super cleaned the carb. Installed new emulsion tube and air pilot jet. Blasted all jets/passages with carb cleaner and compressed air. Float bowl and all internal parts look like they are brand new. Zero signs of gum or varnish. I STILL HAVE a minor stumble both at idle and under load. Can anyone tell me about the tiny adjuster right at the mounting flange beside the left side stud. What does it do? Is it altitude related? I am 98' ASL. I welcome any and all comments. Thanks.
Did you run the gas out? It seems like otherwise there would be gas everywhere. Just curious before I get into it. My generator is running so choppy I don't really want to run it, so should I clamp the input line and drain the carb, or does something prevent fuel flowing out when the jet is removed?
Thanks for this clip. My Tiger G950 does not work smoothly, it is surging and produce unstable current. I have tried to clean the carburetor, piston and ring, no positive change ,please help
It's a common problem right out of the box. Also, the carbs are far more temperamental than they should be. Mine surged slightly when I bought it and the exhaust smelled worse than I thought it should, but I thought it was normal. After using it twice for camping, over the period of one summer, I drained the gas and put it away. This summer I started it and it surged badly. It also has a raw fuel smell when it runs. I'm at 810 feet. This time I'm going to store it with fuel in the system but the tank nearly empty to see if that makes a difference.
Honda advises installing a different fuel jet for higher altitudes. They sell one targeted for 5,000 - 7,000’, and one for 7,000’ and higher that compensates for less atmospheric pressure.
My almost new Honda EU 2200 Companion just started cutting power off then back on as it adjusts to my sail boat's power demands. This happens in both normal and ECO mode. Why? This shuts everything off then back on including my new MarinAire system.
I've always wondered something. If you run fresh fuel through the generator long enough (say by running it for several hours), will it eventually dissolve the varnish and clean the jets?
I have a generator with a new carb works fine without a filter but as soon as i try to even put the cover on without the filter it runs like crap then shuts off any suggestions?
It seems to me you take it back. It probably means it's been sitting n their shelf a very long time with gas in it or they sold you a used unit. Either way it shouldn't be your responsibility to fix it.
Could be debris from the manufacturing process. New engines wouldn't probably have enough time for contaminants and gels to form in the jets from the gasoline.
