Hi KatyDid ! I'm new to your channel and it is great. I commend you and give the rock show a sanding ovation ! ! Padoomp boomp . Got a hundred more just like that one . Seriously, I've been looking at rocks on the gravel roads I walked as a youth seemingly for years. Keep up the great video's
Your video was a nice find in my home feed! I always enjoy seeing other Mary Ellen Jaspers. Whoever sent you that Mary Ellen rough did you right, it's a great piece! Also, I just wanted to clarify as a collector that it's comprised of the following minerals: jasper, quartz, hematite and magnetite.
Beautiful slabs Kate! That Mary Jane agate was groovy!🌼🍄…( sorry, just had to.) loved those gorgeous Jaspers and agates. It’s so exciting to see what is inside, thanks Kate!!👍😃
I usually don’t have a favorite but, I do this time. All are so beautiful. Maryellan jasper is my favorite and can’t wait to see cabs made. Yellow Stone jasper looks like someone took crayons and melted them to get those gorgeous colors. Hope you show the Christmas ornaments. Montana moss would make beautiful ones! Hang them in front of a light on the tree. So gorgeous! Thank you for sharing the slicing. I love it.
Some very interesting and different types of rocks. The Yellowstone jasper is beautiful! Thanks for taking us into your workshop and showing how it's done.
Beautiful slabs! I found a teeny tiny piece of Mary Ellen Jasper earlier this year and with those vivid red swirls it's probably one of my favorite finds. That Yellowstone River jasper you sliced second was absolutely stunning!
Wow, that's some really beautiful material! The colorful jasper and the last agate were stunners! Thanks for showing us the process and the product! Looking forward to seeing Jim's cabs!
Absolutely my favorite! I have a 45lb piece of it to have slabbed. Thanks for the inspiration, Mary Ellen and it’s stromatolites are the oldest material we can experience.
Everytime you see red it's an indication of iron. And it's brittle and often breaks in ways you can't predict. Silicified with quartz red is the only one that cuts better.
Get some different width blocks that can be the same width of your stones to be in the vise and help stabilize it on the opposite side of the vise. Then put the wedges next to the stone itself to keep that not moving. This protects your equipment better and your blade keeping the stone from moving while being cut.
Thanks for sharing. ❤️ to see inside the rocks❣️ The silvery swirls in the Mary Ellen Jasper remind me of mercury from our old thermometers. Hope you find out what it is. Keep on Rockin!
I did click subscribe as soon as I saw your name haha, I have heard others talking of you and so far I'm not disappointed, halfway through and everything is amazing so far. 👌💚✌️
@@marknorthrup4897 Ithink you may have misinterpreted what i was referring to. Mary Jane being another name for marijuana. was just teasing Kate for her slip up on the name lol!
The silvery stuff in the Mary Ellen Jasper is hematite. As part of the Iron Range formation the jasper is actually a less-desired inclusion in the ore deposits. But it's full of high grade iron!
Yeah, sort of. It's an iron containing mineral. Can be reddish. The grayer it is, the more iron it has. Northern Minnesota is called the "Iron Range" . Lot's of ore has been mined from that region.
You've made me realize that I need some red/yellow jasper. I've got lots of green jasper/bloodstone, but no red or yellow...gotta do something about that.
first those are beautiful slabs you cut!! second do you find its just like christmas morning when you cut slabs? third cant wait to see what JIM makes out of them
Thanks Katy I'm going to Montana/Washington state in June. Would love to see some of the places you show on your site. Can you imagine going from flat no stones , Louisiana to Montana or Washington state.
@@doloressanders3824 It sounds wonderful! If you are looking for specific sites along the Yellowstone, you might consider checking out my book, "So Many Beautiful Rocks!" It's on my Etsy store. I went and rockhounded at all the fishing access sites and bridges along the lower Yellowstone River and wrote about them - it's kind of a combination memoir and guidebook.
Manganese is only mildly magnetic, and there isn't enough in it to really make a difference - the little black specks are manganese inclusions. Cool question!
The silvery stuff in the Mary Ellen jasper looks like hematite, so I did the Google Boogey and sure enough, that's likely what you're looking at, is your oil getting reddish? Hemetite is so weird how it can look like a bloodbath when cut.
If you have small fragments of the silvery material from that jasper, you could send me a piece to analyze under my microscope and perform some chemical analysis. I like analytical chemistry, so I don't care about receiving a nice looking specimen to build my collection. I can determine if it is silver, galena, asenopyrite and a multitude of other transition metal sulfides.

Yes it does!
Oh, my goodness, you are 100% right!
Fantabulous as always Kate. Loved them all! My favorites are agates with the quartz pockets.
They really are cool, aren't they?!
Those are some pretty slabs. The yellow stone river jasper looks amazing.

Mary Ellen Jasper is a totally awesome material!
Those are some great cuts.
I am looking forward to seeing them polished!
Love the video. And the jaspers of course are my favorites. So beautiful
They really can be. :)
Pretty awesome patterns in some of those jaspers!!

Frame 4:09 At that angle, it looks like a volcano with lava running down the mound into the land below. Beautiful cuts of stones !!

that mary ellen is cool , but the jasper at 3;30 is nuts thats a crazy rock

They really are - so much variety!
You can use wood wedges to help secure the rough in your saw. I would've cut that jasper length-wize pretty stuff.
Everytime you see red it's an indication of iron. And it's brittle and often breaks in ways you can't predict. Silicified with quartz red is the only one that cuts better.

I need to get out to the saw and cut some more blocks - ever since I moved it into the basement, I've been lazy about chocking. :D
Beautiful 😍 must be so exhiting to open up these rocks🤗

Thanks for sharing. ❤️ to see inside the rocks❣️ The silvery swirls in the Mary Ellen Jasper remind me of mercury from our old thermometers. Hope you find out what it is. Keep on Rockin!
I think the consensus is hematite, which would make sense, because Mary Ellen Jasper is from the Iron Range.
5:50 that rock looks like the flint I use to find here in Europe
Just lovely! nice assortment
Thanks for watching! :)
Good stuff, Kate. ⛏
Thank you!

Hi Katie I've been watching your video and rocks your are fantastic 👏 thanks for them. Going now need to finish your video
Thanks, Ray. :)
That’s fabulous
Thanks!
The silver in the Mary Jane Jasper could be hematite? It’s beautiful!💖
It is! I think hematite is the consensus.
@@KatyDidRocks we have found some beautiful red Jasper with banded hematite here in Arizona. My first thought what is the silver?🤣
I am pretty sure it's hematite...been working a bit of it lately
Beautiful stuff!🤩❤️

That piece at 3:40 looks like sunset over a volcano.
Ooooh, yes1
Correctme if i’m wrong, but i think the Mary Jane’s are usually green.😅. Beautiful stuff Kate. Love those jaspers!
Nope, mary ellen's are red and silver....the silver being hematite and the red being jasper.
@@marknorthrup4897 Ithink you may have misinterpreted what i was referring to. Mary Jane being another name for marijuana. was just teasing Kate for her slip up on the name lol!
LOL, Greg, you are very naughty.

Yes, yes, and me too! :D
I was so hoping Mary Ellen would've become representative of our state. Isn't she lovely?
Very.
Cool rocks Kate. How thick do you make the slabs for cabbing? Thanks
Hi! It depends on my mood - 1/4 or 3/8. 😊
The silvery stuff is probably hematite
Thank you!
As I went on saying: Jasper is B E U T I F U L, especially this time...
I agree!
Is the silver stuff in the Mary Ellen jasper hematite? Great slabs.
It seems to be. Thanks!
Fiddler canyon blue agate, is there a place called fiddler canyon? Does Yellowstone run through it. That is a beautiful rock.
I think it's in Utah - that was a gift. :)

Great video Thank you, May I ask how thick do cut your slabs ?
They are usually 3/8" - 5 turns of the handle. :)
The silvery stuff is either hematite or magnetite
Thanks!
@@KatyDidRocks No problem. Both of the iron rich ores are typically associated with jaspers, especially in BIFs
Have you tried cutting thinner slabs? After all, we want to see through the slab right?
It depends on what you want to do with it. If you are trying to make a cabochon, it's important to make it thick enough to be able to dome it.
Is that an oil saw you have? It’s impressive 😊
You just answered my question. Thanks for sharing.
I use food-grade mineral oil - it's fairly non-toxic, and lubricates well.
@@KatyDidRocks Cool o
Cool
Hi, I would guess the sliver in the Mary Ellen Jasper is Hematite.
Thanks!
Hmmm... might the metallic swirls be hematite?
I think yes.
Could the silver be hematite?
I think yes.
When you said a stone has manganese in it does that mean it is magnetic?
Manganese is only mildly magnetic, and there isn't enough in it to really make a difference - the little black specks are manganese inclusions. Cool question!
The metallic stuff is iron.

I have one that looks alike; how can I send you a picture?
You can join the FB group Jasperlicious! and post photos there. :) facebook.com/groups/231119048362237
Shine on outside might be hematite?…
Why is this stromolite called Mary Ellen?
It is found in the Mary Ellen mine in the Iron Range of Minnesota!
4:10 ish almost looks like the German flag!
Rocks hold many surprises.
