- Kate, Jim and Kava, along with Kate's parents, dig for GIGANTIC THUNDEREGGS at the Polka Dot Agate Mine near Madras, Oregon. The Canyon Rim Thunderegg Pit has only been open since 2017, when the massive thunder eggs were discovered as a backhoe was digging. The Canyon Rim thundereggs are unique, as they tend to be very large. Inside, they are filled with tubes, crystals, common opal, aragonite and even magnesite. So many beautiful rocks!

I like the way they took care of your parents, total class 🥰❤️ You’re very lucky to still have them.
What a blessed day full of family, love and treasures ❤️🕊
It was an amazing day. Thanks for joining us.
Thunder Eggs are one of my favorites! Your parent’s rock hounding was precious ☺️
:) It was such a good day.
That was so touching watching you out there with your parents having such a good time. A serious bounty of thundereggs were to be had too, wow. Thank you for taking us along on your trip!
It was an incredible journey. :)
So lovely that you have your Mom and Dad with you; what beautiful memories you are making. The thunder eggs are gorgeous.
Beautiful memories, beautiful rocks, beautiful people. :)
Jim really got into prospecting those thunder eggs. It was so nice to meet your parents, Kate. Good to see those that gave you the rock hounding bug.
Thank you so much, Malinda!
Thanks for including us on your family outing. I think this is my favorite episode to date. Keep on doin'!
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
“Thunder egg” is such an awesome name. I can only hope that every time you open them, a blast of lightning lights up the sky.
Ooooh, that would be cool!
How fun Kate. It’s good to see you out with the family. What a great place, with awesome material. You gotta bring your mom back home to hunt the Yellowstone River with you. She has a good eye. No surprise there, living with a rock hound most of her life 👍
LOL, I told my mom everyone on YT thinks she's a real rockhound - she thinks it's hilarious, because when my dad was actively doing it, he dragged her all over these desolate backwater places (looking for fossils, for instance) and she HATED it. But she sure enjoyed the thundereggs.
Mom we can’t take them all. 😆 Love her exitement.
:D I do get it form somewhere.
It’s like you read my mind when you asked that young about how thunder eggs are formed. ❤Thanks for eliciting the info for us. Take care.
You are so welcome!
Every day I thank god that we see the world in color!
This is a good thing to be thankful for.
Welcome to Oregon! We're serious about our thundereggs here, as you can see!
Love it lots!
Beautiful video Kate in every way. The thunder eggs, Jim and Kava and especially you with your parents! Thank you for bringing us along on this adventure.
Thank you for joining us.
Looks like such a good time thanks for taking us along 👍
Thanks for joining us!
Congrats Brian for not trying to sound technical you managed to lay out a quite technical yet easily understandable explanation right on !
He did a great job - I'm sorry we interrupted him in the middle.
Oh my God I love your parents!!! The thunder eggs too of course!! It's my favorite from all of your videos!
That's great! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :)
Wonderful photo at the end. Vintage folks....gotta love ‘em....soooo sweet.😀
It was wonderful to be wit them.
That was a fantastic video thank you. It was nice to see your parents out with you. Especially your dad. I remember from another video you said the slice cutter was his. It must of been fun for him to be back out checking out rocks, and watching someone else do the hard work. Once a rockhound, always a rockhound!
Once when I was trying to explain thundereggs to a bunch of first graders, I said they were formed when a volcano burped. I figured the teacher could explain better than I could.
LOL, burping volcano. Yes, it was a very special day, and I was so happy to be able to share it with my parents. It ended up being just lovely.
So satisfying when you’re digging something and it finally comes loose 😊 awesome that you’re parents came out too!
It was a great day.
Aww I missed the premier. What a treat to have your parents with you.
It really was.
Thank for taking us along for the fun
Thanks for joining us!
Could you imagine Jesse the "Rookie", let loose in that quarry? 😁♥️🇨🇦♥️ I'd just pick what others leave behind! What a place, what trip, what a wonderful family time! 😁 🙏🙏🙏
It was absolutely awesome.
That's what I was thinking. I wouldn't even have to dig.
Wow! Rockhounding family indeed. And the thunder eggs wow. Just wow
:) It was a great trip.
What a good day for finding thunder eggs and also taking your parents with you was a blessing. You never know long you will have your mom and dad with you so enjoy them while you can.
Glenna, I agree, and I do.
Lot's of big beautiful thundereggs, I don't know how you could pick what to take. Glad to see the family's having fun.
It was a special day.
I love that your parents could be there. Mine would have loved this for different reasons.
It was a very special day.
Another lovely video. Beautiful family time and beautiful rocks.
Thank you!
A whole family of rockhounders! That's wonderful!
:) It was a wonderful day.
The Eggs were great, but I loved it he most seeing your Mom and Dad. Didn't your Dad build your slab saw? Thank God they are there for you to enjoy.
Thank you, Paul. Yes, he did. I am grateful to have been able to spend the time with both of them.
It was so cool seeing you out there with your parents and that the mine setup a shade for them. You guys found some beautiful things out there I can't wait to see how you polish them up
It was an amazing day. I do have polishing plans. :)
Rockhounding " Random picking up of beautifulness" I love it! Also, nice to meet your parents!
LOL, you are so right! Thanks for joining us.
.Wow it's like a surprise egg. That when you open them you find wonders inside. Beautiful finds. Greetings and blessings friends.
They really are a lot of fun!
You sure can find some nice rocks! That chisel with the handle looks real handy. Thanks for the video!
It's handy for me, because I'm awful with a hammer! Thanks, MTH.
A very cool place! Lots of Treasure finds!!
It was amazing.
Hello my friends, I know this was a year ago... I truly Thank You for sharing your Mom and Pop, with the World... Great Respect... Ohh and The Eggs, Very Nice...
I bet He had a blast, former rockhounder got to be there... What a Blessing... Your Mom is Quite the miner, Good eye... I've been following your channel approximately 6 months... Thank You All again for your service work...
It was a blessing to be able to bring them, and I know they both enjoyed it very much. :)
Kate, first, you are beyond blessed to still have both of your parents! Thank you so much for sharing such a special day with them! The Polka Dot Agate mine is now on my bucket list.
I really am blessed, Cheryl, thank you. It was amazing to spend time with them after not having seen them for a year and a half (except for Zoom calls). :D
I just love these videos they’re sooo relaxing and much fun..
Keep digging till you figure it out. Naughty girl. Love that man!
Haha, when I said that, I had this little tweak of "mwahahahahaha!"
I love this ♡♡♡
Thank you!
Thanks, Kate!
Thank you!
WOW those are so huge!!!! What great finds, and awesome place! Really enjoyed the drone footage too! 👍🏻
Thanks - and I'll pass the drone comment on to Mr. Did. Yeah, I was a bit overwhelmed by the size. Like the guy says at the end - if it ain't the size of a soccer ball, it ain't a thunderegg. :D
Its an interesting dig spot. The dirt around them is so loose it seems. That place is amazing!
The soil is really very loose. They also go through the pit with a backhoe once a week to clean up the piles.
Gorgeous! Loved seeing you hubt with your parents??❣
It was a wonderful time. Thanks for joining us!
🤯 mind blown!!! Awesome place!
It really is! :)
Kate,
I hope you get slabs of these beauties on your Etsy store!
I am working on it - my saw is out of commission for a bit. But I have thundereggs for sale, if you want to cut your own. :)
Hello KatyDid Rocks, Hi Joyce and Stan. Heck yeah, I'm heading down there tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.
Did you find anything?
Hi Katy, Hope you are well. Yes I found something. I don't like making a big story out of nothing, but it turns out my visit to the mine was a little more than I expected. It was my first time visiting any type of rock shop. So, here you go. They have a lot more than just thundereggs there, which I didn't know, and after seeing the heaps of japers I passed on digging for thundereggs and just bought jaspers. Now I regret not digging for at least one especially after seeing the photos people are posting of theirs. Guess I'll have to go back.
@@1sec2midnight :D I don't know how you could have resisted digging!
That looks like it was tons of fun! I can't wait to see which ones y'all brought home & when y'all start cutting them
I plan a cutting video sometime this summer. ;)
And you know I have to admit when the video started I thought for sure you were digging trex eggs or somthing I'm fortunate enough to live near crystal peak in colo and so get to see a lot of different mineralogy petrified wood dinosaur bones and stuff like that I feel your joy!
How wonderful!
Spectacular sizes, love all the details in it
Thanks for watching!
I love that place. The guys there were so nice and very helpful. I was there on a very wet day when most of the mine to the right was underwater. I think digging in the dry earth looks easier though it’s easier to see what you have when it’s wet. I had so much dirt embedded in my clothes lol. You should post on their Facebook page when you slab those pieces.
Thanks - it was a lot of fun.
Wow, some of those thundereggs were HUGE! I've only ever had the chance to get my hand on small ones, I'd be having trouble figuring out what to take home digging in a place like that.
It was a struggle!
Lots of great pieces there wow! I’ll have to see how far that place is from where I’m staying in Oregon next month!
It is AMAZING.
How awesome very cool , thank you for sharing your adventures, maybe on our next trip to Oregon we will go there awesome so many to decide what to bring home 😝, awesome it’s a family trip 😊💙
It's a great place for the family. There was a baby there younger than two when we were there, running around all day long!
Sweet Finds!.👍
We had so much fun!
That was such a cool video.
I actually googled the mine. What a neat place yo go digging, looks very warm too. Those thunder eggs are incredible
Lovely to see your parents along for the adventure.
Hi from NZ 😊😊😊
Thanks, Nicola. :)
Nice video!!
Thanks sharing!!
Thanks for watching!
Never found a geode or thundereggs. Thanks for sharing.
You just have to look in the right areas!
Nice rocks.
Thank you - I definitely loved them.
Great video
Thank you!
Great video! looks like fun, jealous subscriber from the UK! 😉 💜
Thank you! 😃
You're basically digging in what would have been a thermally active lava flow, where water was being heated and evaporated by lava. The yellow and orange "rotten" layer is caused by sulphur content from long-dead acidic steam vents.
Thanks, JF! It's an awesome place.
I see your mom really gets into rocks too. The 2 of them must have made quite a rock-hounding pair back in the day! Didn't you say your dad built your saw? Really cool. I'd love to investigate that place.
Thanks, Ginger. :) I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent mine, a must see for sure ... Can't wait for video...
Have a few of their eggs in my shop ...👌
Awesome!
great greetings from bijih alam.
Great greetings to you!
👍❤️
An awesome place for sure ... Did you get any Polka dot agate too?
Nice eggs! 👌
Those really pop under a UV light too...
I DID - a 15-pound chunk. My saw is out of commission at the moment while we figure out why it keeps binding up - slabs coming soon.
@@KatyDidRocks , how is the blade on your saw and the tension with the screw drive system? Belts are in good shape?
Couldn't help but enjoy the video and hope to go there soon. Looked like your mother was finding them faster than you could pack them. You did mention cost to her. How do they charge to come dig there?
$2/lb for thunder eggs, $5 for agate. 😊
Do they have a website? Like, what are their hours, how much do they charge, what's their fee schedule, etc etc...? You said it could cost you $1000? Do they charge by the pound? What's the actual deal?
What is the difference between these thundereggs and the geodes we find in the Midwest around Keokuk Iowa?
I don't know too much about the geology in Iowa, but the thundereggs are formed in rhyolite gas pockets. Geodes are hollow and lined with crystals - most thundereggs from the area are filled solid with agate and other material. The Canyon Rim thunderegg beds has unusually large eggs that often are hollow and filled with strange tubes and bubbles - super fun! I want to go hunt geodes someday.
Does the mine have a limit on what you collect and what is the dig cost?
Nope! It’s free to dig you just pay by the pound for what you take home.
The eggs are $2/pound, which seems very cheap but adds up quickly when they are so large. The polka dot agate is $5/pound - the mine currently is not open to the public, but they have a big selection you can buy.
Omgosh!!! This is amazing!!! If I wanted to visit this place would I just google map polka dot mine Oregon? Do you have to pay to go here!? It was so nice to see your parents joining you!! Your dad is adorable!! ❤️❤️❤️ thank you for this awesome video!
You can find the Polka Dot Agate Mine by Googling it. Price at the moment is $2:lb. for thunder eggs, $5/lb. for the agate. They are great folks!
@@KatyDidRocks thank you so much Katy! I appreciate it so much!! I absolutely love your videos! I work graveyard so every morning when I go home I fall asleep to you, agate dad, rookie rockhound and Michigan rocks! :) love you guys!!! 🙏❤️
Hi Katy, I’m new to your channel and am really enjoying it. Is this mine in Ashwood?
Hello, and welcome. Yes it is!
@@KatyDidRocks thank you!
How much a pound they getting now days.?
They charge $2/lb. at the site - which seemed like a massive bargain until I saw how huge the eggs were. :'D
I'm hoping this isn't a really really silly question: do all agates originate from Thunder Eggs?
no
@@dpmcfarland21 thank you 🙏 in my local river I find an assortment of rocks...carnelian, calcedony, jasper and agate...but all the agate seems to have skin on it and 99% of the time I find it has that black/grey 'glue' type cement that is on Thunder Eggs 🤔
Nope, although it would be cool! Some agates are formed in a similar way to thundereggs, though. Montana agates, for instance, are also formed inside gas pockets from a lava flow; thundereggs are from gas pockets in rhyolite. Depending on the geology where you live, the agates may have formed the same way.
@@KatyDidRocks Thank you for your reply 🙏
@@BeachBushandBeyond :) there is no such thing as a stupid question, except the one that is wondered about and unasked.
Jealous.. I live in Oregon and have not been there.
Take a road trip - it's great!
The videos have been very blurry lately
That's odd... I wonder if it's a connection problem? They don't appear blurry on my computer. :( I'll look into it. Thank you for letting me know!
When I go in to look it has been that way. Today I went into the setting to see if it was a setting for higher quality viewing and it was so we'll see how the next video shows....Thanks for responding KatyDid.
I hope you can get it fixed! 😊
Lots of junk.
If you live in the Ochoco area, I'm sure you find LOTS of beautiful eggs...
Thanks, Kate!
Any time!
