  • In this talk, Dr. Vahid Rafati explores the Tablet of Medicine, a mighty work revealed by Baha'u'llah. Dr. Rafati explains that he is not a medical doctor, and instead, he discusses the context of this tablet, medicine in the Islamic Revelation, and the theological issues related to physical wellbeing.
Dr. Vahid Rafati received his B.A degree in Psychology from Tehran University. He subsequently completed his PhD in Islamic Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Rafati has been serving at the Research Department of the Baha’i World Centre in Haifa, Israel since 1980 and is the author of numerous articles and books in both Persian and English.
This talk was given at the Grand Canyon Baha'i Conference, 25 December, 2017.

This is fascinating. The focus of the Tablet seems to be on the ways people can maintain good health as opposed to on healing.

When mankind understands that we need both health of body and spirit as agency for development then it will be understood that we are spirit and body , that science and religion coexist . Many thanks for your help

The writings say specifically " to seek out a competent physician " . words are very important as meanings can change according to the specific word. A medical doctor is not the same as a doctor. This is why they put the word medical in front of it. A medical doctor can only offer you drugs and surgery. They know nothing else. A physician can offer you many different ways to help your body get better. I you are sick, research and find what is best suited for you.

at 38 minutes he says never exercise with an empty stomach but then he turns that around right away and says we should not exercise on a full stomach. So I'm assuming the first statement he makes was in error and he didn't mean to say that.

Should we talk about the "Tablet of Medicine" or a "Tablet to a Doctor", a name later given to one of Bahá'u'lláh's Epistles? It seems to me that the second call is more accurate.

So where does that leave people who actually work with healing people? As most medical doctors do not address the root causes of disease and the ensuing processes of recovery? The actual process of healing is left to nurses and therapists of varying types and kinds. Technically, today, anyone of these liscenced professionals has studied longer and obtained more information than those studying medicine even as short as 40years ago. So such professionals are not entitled to reading and following its guidance?

I looked into the Dyametrically opposed foods. Some foods don't go together and the body has trouble digesting them together so chooses just one and the other goes undigested into our system. They may taste good together, but the body cannot deal with them.

I have been looking for a doctor who has great respect for their creator thus values his life and the lives of the sick he is trying to make well rather than just order a pill. Today there is hardly any touching which tells a lot spirituality mentality and physically. No listening and no interest on how you live eat and sleep. So yes I thoroughly agree that a physician should believe in something greater than himself and be humbled that he has peoples lives in his hands and that responsibility is great and with his /her years of training they must also trust in a higher power.. .the unseen doctor that woke them up that morning.

Did not really think the mother-in-law joke was appropriate (about 28-29 mins) “Of course we don’t care about the advice of our mother-in-law” (repeated twice for the sake of making a joke)

Yes quite often women are butt of the jokes recently I listen to a recording of a hand of a cause making jokes about women. How many men does it take to continue the suppression and negative judgement of women? Just one.

You talk a lot about medicine and how the new generation should get involved what about Bahaullah's message in the tablet of medicine he says how food is the way to go when healing.
