  • PM1800B, Powermatic 18 inch Bandsaw. After owning this saw and putting it through its paces for about five weeks. I decided to do a review and demonstration of it's features. Reviewed are the fence system, safety systems, mobile base (Bora Portamate 3500), guide bearing adjustments, dust extraction, the tensioning system, blade tracking, adding a new blade, and the loading and unloading of the saw. A mention is made of Eagle Tools in Los Angeles as the seller and the services offered. This is meant for information services and not a sales pitch. This is not an unboxing video.

Absolutely the best video out there, Powermatic should pay you to do videos on all their equipment. I'm in the market for a new band saw and boy, am I sold, what a great video. Thank you Sir for all your time and effort.

I put on the bluemax guides and they worked extremely well and much better than stock yellow ones.
For anyone trying them, first definitely do it as they are very high quality and fit very well. Second easy to put on by hand with one spring clamp as they recommend in instructions that come with the tires. Third, as recommended elsewhere, take off the wheels in order to apply them. Note that the bottom wheel has the grooved belt attached to it so you need to first loosen the tension on the belt and then remove the bottom tire. Repeat the process when putting things back on at the end. I’ve never done this before, and it only took me approximately 20 to 30 minutes, and the hardest part was simply getting the yellow tires off the wheel.

Excellent video, very thorough, thank you for the review, this solidifies my choice of bandsaws. And kudos to you on the camera work and pointing out all the details most fail to show well.

I have had my Laguna 16HD for 20 or so years, and got it for bowl turning. Agreed that the table size is terrible. They are made for cabinet shops, maybe. I did build extension tables for processing bowl blanks. My saw does cut 16 inches high, which is plenty. If you are cutting green wood, which is 90% of what I turn, the dust ports as they are don't suck at all. They work fine for dry wood. As for blades, I have been using the Lennox bimetal blades. On my Laguna, it is a 1 1/4 inch blade with teeth at about 3/4 inch apart. The thing about the bimetal is that if you hit a nail, it keeps cutting, and if you have a good saw shop, they can be sharpened several times. They do cut far longer and straighter than the T Wolf blades. If you hit a nail, no problem. The M42 HSS teeth are what they use on pallet cutting blades, though different set for cutting wood. Looks like the 20 years of time has let them make improvements on the saws....

Reed, thanks for the input. I had my Italian Laguna Tools HD 18 for about twenty plus years. Other than a Capicitor going out in my last year I never had a bit of trouble with it. I found the smaller table and the twelve inches below the guides to be limiting to cut my bowl blanks. The new powermatic has been a great machine to work with. It's just rock solid, very smooth and quiet and has met all my needs. I originally was shopping for the 20 inch but the size of the foot print was just enough to hold me back as I have a two car garage shop. Mind you there hasn't been a car in there in 40 years. And of course one of my first projects could have used that throat too. But I reallly can't say enough about this saw now that I have a full year under my belt. It's really just a top notch tool. 18" under the guides, a big table and five HP all deliver on the promise. Thanks again for watching ......check out part two.

Fantastic video! I have a Rikon 18in and it’s no where as nice as this saw. I know some of the price with Powermatic is the shiny yellow paint, but the fit and finish and little touches like the chrome knobs really make it nice! I have toyed with the idea of upgrading to this. I do turning as well and the added HP and ReSaw capacity are really tempting.
