    Today we are taking a look at the most popular riff that taught YOU how to play Hammer-ons and pull-offs!
    It's always a pleasure to flick through the comments and chat with you. Over the Hills and Far Away was the song that seemed most popular besides the three I had taught you.
    I always want to make sure this channel feels personal so what better way than to get you involved.
    As always it's my spin on things, so if you feel like being a troll: you shall not pass. 🧙🏻‍♂️
    Have fun.

    I was in school when this came out and bought the album, the following day my mate played it all the way through on an acoustic guitar in the classroom, he could learn any track instantly, great player. He is sadly gone but I did play in a group with him for several years. Great memories, thank you Sped. PS I seen them play this live as well.

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  2 года назад +7

      Wow, that’s definitely a skill. I mean, I can now learn a few songs in a day. You get better at that the longer you play, it gets easier.
      Your friend sounds like a special player, sorry that they’re not with us any more.
      Were they pitch perfect or have a photographic memory?
      You will be able to do the same thing as well for sure, keep at it Charles!

    This is the song that taught me hammer on and pull off! And only very recently, I’m an older chap relearning guitar. I heard the song and thought ‘I have to play that!’. I cannot tell you how much time I have put into this song, a lot, but I will definitely never be frightened by hammer on or pull offs ever again, they are now second nature! And I’m quite good at the song now even though I say it myself. Nice video, you do teach very well Sped….

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  2 года назад +1

      Exactly, that’s where you want everything to be. Effortless and second nature. What’s cool about this example in particular is that it moves between shapes and little lead lines, a nice mixture of rhythm playing and intricate picking.

  • @21themug
    @21themug 2 года назад +10

    Over The Hills was one of the very first songs I learned on my first guitar in 1986. I still play it today. If you listen to the live version there is an extra riff Jimmy throws in the intro that sounds really nice. I'd love to see a video on some of the riffs that don't appear on the studio tracks. Stairway is another good example. Love your videos, Thanks!!!

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  2 года назад +3

      Yeah I’ve mentioned this a few times, he’s just doing some major and minor thirds working his way up to the D chord but imagining it as a bar at the seventh fret. And I know the one you mean in Stairway to Heaven as well, they’re very cool, when I did my 5 facts about Stairway I did chuck in the little blues lick that he puts in the Am7 section.

      If you haven't listened to the Zeppelin on BBC recordings you should find a copy. Comes as a 3 disc set and they have some arrangements that they only seemed to do on live shows as well as a couple medley arrangements of their own and other songs that are really great.

He was the singer of a metal band that played a lot of Sabbath , AC/DC & Metallica covers . He put together a show with about 60 bands on a weekend from Friday til Sunday night , all kinds of music , rock,metal ,blues,country ,reggae,jazz ,punk etc ,. Good times

    Cool. I learned it quickly, even with the almost old now person early morning brain fog. Now I just have to remember that I know it. Use it , or lose it -- just like learning a language.

    I was lucky enough to see Jimmy play this live in 75'. Didn't know the song name, just recalled it from radio. Bought the only chord book available a couple years later, all written by a non guitarist, and for years didn't know alternate tunings were why songs were much easier fingerings. Like the Rain Song in standard tuning, crazy. Nice videos enjoy them all!

    I got the book for Christmas, it’s great and yes, big and heavy. Yes, this is one of my earliest learned songs as well, I probably learned it in about 1977. I actually found this one quite easy and when I played it people were really impressed but I always used to think I don’t know why as it’s not that difficult. I found Stairway harder.

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  2 года назад

      Some riffs just sit nicely in the hand don’t they? Even though they might be faster or harder technically speaking. Stairway moves around a lot more than this so I can see why it’s challenge you more.

    Not sure I've ever listened to this track, certainly not in 40 years or so, and never so carefully as I just have after watching your lesson. Thanks for throwing it my way.
    I love the intro which is definitely a good work out for the pull-off skills especially if you play it on an acoustic guitar as Jimmy did (I knew that from the sound but couldn't resist checking the book to be confident enough to go public!) One to try out for certain, for which your TAB will be a necessity.

      @@SpedSpedding if you'll indulge a short story, I grew up playing various brass instruments in big jazz swing bands, when COVID hit, that came to a screeching halt and I would just be going straight home after a work day of virtually no customers so I just ended up drinking every night. After a couple months I started to see where I was headed but couldn't see a way out which just made me more depressed. One night on RUclips, having never really listened to Led Zeppelin, I came across Over the Hills and Far Away live at Earls Court and realized that playing music was what I had been missing. The next morning at work I ordered an Ibanez AS-53 and a used Acoustic amp, two days later I was sitting on my couch trying to learn how to play and I haven't felt the need for a drink since. Thanks to channels like yours, Marty music, and music is win, I was able to learn to play and pull out of the nose dive I was in. Fast forward to last week and I got invited to play live at a local bar with the owner of my local guitar shop. You guys that really teach on your channels do more good than you know.
