    The cinematography of the original is the most difficult to achieve BECAUSE it was so naturalistic. Many movies of the 70s and 80s have that look, like Coming Home, French Connection and Midnight Run. Even Jackie Brown, which is supposed to be like a movie from the 70s, had that look! Anyway, I think that films that used to trust actors to fill the frame with their acting in medium and wide shots and don't overdo the lighting, the angles or editing until appropriate are glorious! The power of Sydney Lumet compels you!

    The movie is implying that all roads lead to God, which then makes none of the religion mean a damn thing. It's a pathetic copout and a slap in the face of the original's convictions. I literally pray this movie bombs so hard that it will cripple the possibility of a trilogy.

      No, there is nothing wrong with coexisting with members of other religions. That's not "woke", that's called having neighbors. LmFaO. The issue is that the world of The Exorcist is a catholic world. This was established by the cathothic author of a book that was made into a catholic centric film. Catholicism does not recognize these other religions in these matters so now you're up against a massive plot hole from the beginning of the story. It's lazy writing. We said in the review that if you want to tell a story about a group of exorcists from a different religion, then go for it. But by setting this film in the universe of the original Exorcist, you're ignoring the lore set up in your own franchise. @@fuentesdevidamusic

DGG went in there with no knowledge of the nuances of the story(I don’t think he even watched the original) and shit out a movie with the obligatory cameo. Like you said, Believer started out nicely, then the director couldn't stop himself from going the gratuitous route, over-using CGI, and forgetting what made the original so good. I found enjoyment in this movie, however, the film The Possession is proof that this kind of film can be done with other religions in mind. The Possession is a Jewish exorcism movie. I liked that film as well and thought the Jewish spin was unique for this genre. The Exorcist Believer could have gone down a similar path instead of trying to include multiple religions. However, I thought the film was okay for what it was, a mostly generic possession movie.

    • @hardcutreviews
      @hardcutreviews  11 месяцев назад

      The idea of other religions coming in and showing how they deal with demonic possession are interesting and deserve their own films, such as The Possession. That film doesn’t exist in this “Exorcist” universe. It was a hard sell for us since they came in and just piggybacked off of the legacy and name in a world that is established as Catholic. If they had not done that I think you would have seen less criticism. Appreciate the comment.

    Burstyn needs to take a lot of heat for this. They begged her to be in it, and as part of the original that made her a lot of money and fame, she should have looked at that line and refused to read it. What were they going to do? Fire her over it? They needed her.
    Instead she utters a line that shits all over the meaning of the original....
    Time to stop blaming only studios and writers. Harrison Ford sold out to destroy two legacy characters, but all we hear about is Kennedy, Disney and Phoebe what's her name....Ford agreed to this, he is complicit.
    Burstyn spit on her own legacy in a movie she was in for fifteen minutes then stabbed off because her prescreens was a bait and switch.

She was in a rare position where she held a lot of power and could have shut that down. It’s baffling. Same with Ford. I mentioned that way back when we reviewed the Indy 5 trailer. He keeps agreeing to this trash. It wouldn’t exist if he just said, no this is garbage. What can they do? They are relying on these legends on to come back so people will go see it.

    If they had a video of Chris talking about Regan and Regan only as a little Easter egg, then had the dad doing research and eventually finding his way to an actual Exorcist then that would have not only make much more sense but made it 100% better. They didn't need Linda or Ellen at all.
    I get the Haiti spiritual stuff had to come back in at some point because of the start but the OG Exorcist is based on Catholicism. They could have had the Haiti spiritual things not work to drive home they need a priest. They could have kept the church saying no and the priest praying and then ignoring their orders but, you know, NOT dying 2 seconds after? And then actually almost exorcising the demons and the other girls dad coming out with his choice. I thought that was actually a good twist. With cutting out a few other things (like the nurse all of a sudden becoming an exorcist because she regained her faith but still being present and her faith waning, the speeches, the boxing seeing as it NEVER comes up again ETC.) that would have saved the second half of the movie and it would have been decent. At least enough that people would actually want a sequel.

    The Exorcist (1973) is Catholic centred - William Peter Blatty was Catholic after all - though I just wonna point out that Friedkin opens his film, as The Exorcist title appears, with the Arabic Muslim chant ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is great), because Friedkin wanted a global sense of good vs evil on Earth. Catholicism is the focus and Catholics win the day in the original - thankfully Friedkin wasn’t ‘modern’ enough to do “Exorcists Assemble!” like in this latest pile of shit.

    Father Karass didn't go to hell for killing himself. He sacrificed himself, which is John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends."
    What an insult this movie is to the original. What a desecration of the material it is.
    It's worse than Exorcist II: The Heretic because that film actually TRIED. They were a bunch of rich California New Agers so they knew nothing about The Exorcist, good and evil, and competent storytelling. But THIS abomination.
    I'm sure they thought they'd killed it when they pitched it to the idiot diversity hire who green lighted this.

    I would say this movie was a perfect metaphor for today's society in that the woke mobs ideas for what is good and works and will make society better, but actually is responsible for making it infinitely worse, more degenerate and terrible it has become. Everything they think is a strength is a weakness. Everything the think is inclusive is exclusive. Everything they think is good is actually evil. When the patriarchy line was said in the movie, I actually turned it off and refused to watch the rest. I've had it with movies, especially beloved ones being remade or 're-imagined' (which ironically have next to no imagination in them) being used for political agendas rather than what they were initially made for .......entertainment. It's truly incredible how so many people involved in such a franchise, especially one that cost half a billion to actually get to our screens, and THIS is what they came up with? This? A student film maker or even a big film fan could've written and produced something better. It just defies belief a collective amount of people with millions of dollars and technology, actors etc at their disposable can't come up with anything better.
