"Are You Filming People? You Don't Have My Permission To Film"

  • For this video I did a solo audit of this United Stated post office location. After documenting the outside of the facility , I proceeded to go inside the lobby area taking notice of the many cameras inside, documenting the public. As I was taking some still images of the passport counter , one of the postal employees asked from behind the counter if I had any questions. I informed him that I did not, but would be sure to ask if I did. I proceeded back outside to do some more recording of the exterior of the entrance. One woman going inside blocking her face with some envelopes told me I didn't have her permission to film & she proceeded inside. Eventually the employee who spoke to me inside , emerged outside to inform me that he was getting complaints from customers about my presence with my cameras...not a problem, I took a few steps back onto the public sidewalk with virtually the same view to continue my recordings. Eventually Ms. envelope emerged as Ms. Purse now blocking her view as she walked by me. She must have not liked that I said she was doing the walk of shame, so she went back inside the post office to possibly once again complain? I would guess about 15 -20 minutes had passed when sure enough Police units arrived on scene. Two officers in total. They proceeded to go inside to discuss in private with the calling party... Eventually they both came back out to inform me that some of the customers were feeling uncomfortable with what I was doing & they explained to them that what I was doing was a lawful activity . They were cordial & maintained a professional demeanor with me while on scene. The woman who took issue with me never came back outside while I remained outside documenting. Chime in below in the comments with your thoughts on this one. Thanks for tuning in.

Imagine being expected to give an explanation to some residents (or law enforcement) as to why you are walking down a PUBLIC SIDEWALK!
"In order for you to WALK on the PUBLIC SIDEWALK in front of MY house, I need to know why you are doing it OR I need to know where you are coming from and where you are going. Oh, and I also will need you to give me your name so if something happens at my house, I can provide your name to the police and they will have 'their' suspect."
This is one of the analogies that I like to use.

I worked for the post office up until 2021. Prior to that, as you know poster 7 explicitly allows you to photograph in the lobby and anywhere a customer can be. And as you know, both still employees continue to insist on violating that by calling the police.
In 2021, the postmaster general issued an order that all postmasters were to have what they called a stand-up talk. The stand-up talk is where the postmaster just addresses all of the employees at the same time and passes on information. Kind of like a monthly meeting. But this stand-up talk was specifically regarding first Amendment auditors. It was made extremely clear that people had the right to film in the post office wherever a customer could be. Postal employees were directed to not interfere with these photographers and to not call law enforcement on them. Ever since that stand-up talk and order was issued, you continue to see postal employees violate it time and time again.
Unfortunately, until we get rid of public employee unions and eliminate qualified immunity for all government employees and drain the swamp of career bureaucrats nothing will ever change.

"Oh? You don't want to be recorded in public? Well, you shouldn't practice your religion since I don't like whatever it is. Oh Wait! The First Amendment protects both!" and leave it at that.
AND I still think you are one of the Best auditors out here. Consistency is key. I think you've been going for like 2-3 years, right?

As always, I love your work!
Just out of curiosity, I’ve seen you film inside of POST offices before, and I know it is legal in the states, is there any reason you didn’t tell this particular occasion?
It’s totally not a jab at you, nor am I putting down your work. I was just curious.

Really? He was inside the building and put them on when he came out. He didn't ask for an ID, he didn't give directives, simply stated that he educated them on the proper way and that still isn't enough for you? You have to go to him putting on shades? Get over yourself already...I put on shades when I go outside too. Does that mean I only confront people I don't like with shades on?

Good that these cops knew how to use a parking lot, and didn't just park in the street, blocking traffic like they often do.
