Add 1/3 of food grade Diatomaceous Earth in a medium glass jar, 1/3 water and maybe less then 1/3 of white school glue like Elmer's. Shake really good or stir. Brush on with a sponge brush. Move the dirt a bit then paint the major stem, leaves as much as you can. You can let dry and retouch. Cover stem. Cover for next use about 1 month to 6 weeks. Always check for eggs. Thank you so very much for sharing your tips on controlling squash vine borers. I have been plagued with them for the last two years and no matter WHAT treatment or tips others have shared to stop them, NONE of them worked for me. I've been gardening for YEARS (I'm 65 yrs old) and never have I had such problems growing a garden. Two questions: Do you have any advice on controlling grub worms, which I understand are the larva of the Japanese beetle, which I've never seen here. 2nd question: What kind of Bronners Castille Liquid soap do you use. I never knew they made so many different scents and want to use what YOU are using since it seems to work. I'm in southern Alabama (zone 8b) and understand you are in GA but not sure of your grow zone. I DREAM of the day where I can once again grow one of my favorite summer veggies...yellow squash. They also got my Cherokee Tan pumpkins, spaghetti squash & acorn squash so I'm at my wits end trying to figure out how to control them. WOW 😲 your plants are so huge. What climate are you in? I’m in NE Texas and we’ve had so much rain and lack of sunshine mine are small. What can I do to have mine grow bigger and produce more fruit? Amazing job. Thank you
The bore for the most part lays eggs on the leaf in the beginning of its cycle. As the male flower come up the bore will lay eggs around the underside of steams. The ground isn't much of an issue. I've been watching them for years and probably killed 100 plus.
Good tutorial on pruning. Now I can prune with a little more confidence. Diatomaceous earth on the base after spraying; spray base only with neem oil + castile soap + water. How much of each do you put into your sprayer? Do we need to fill the holes in the base after we cut off the leaf stems? Seems like they would be a perfect path for the borer to get into the plant.
I haven't done this precise mixture, but I do 10 to 1 water to whatever I put in the water. Never more than 10 to 1, as the chemicals (and yes, soap ans need oil are chemicals) can be quite harsh on the plants.
@@foodforestfolderol I tried the more concentrated mixture on the stem of my 6 zucchini. Some fell on the leaves. No reaction by the plants, but no proof that this works because I also injected with BT. Frass on one plant, but no further damage. Probably the BT got to the larva.
Wow, beautiful squash, and beautiful garden! I volunteer at our local community garden. I planted "mashed potato" squash. It's still pretty young, but has flowers on it. Today I was horrified to find that vine borers have attacked it. Can this young plant be saved? Your tip on getting the stems off the ground was excellent. I never tought about letting it climb up a pole. I agree with you, your wife should put on some long sleeves, we also grow okra, and man, that stuff is itchy! Thank you for this video. And I think gardens are heaven on earth. Have a blessed day!
This video was another great find! Our squash didn't do well because of those bugs and too much water too. I bless YAH for this knowledge you share freely. I'm taking notes in my book right now. Shalom
Nice ideas. I've never purposely have grown vertically. I don't do much planting of summer squash and I know the VB Loves zucchini. It's the winter squash I have problems with. We are zone 5a. I used tinfoil wraps and BT. The rain and spraying or diatamachious earth need to be reapplied after every rain. The vine borers do come from cocoons in the soil, but they are also flying and laying eggs. We had some success with BY and tinfoil, but still had to do surgery on the vines at the base of some plants. I could try vertical on winter squash, but the heavier varieties will be quite heavy and a lot of support. I also bury a stem leaf junction further down the vine to encourage rooting so I don't lose the whole plant and fruit that has set. If vertical I wouldn't be able to do so. I will try the neem oil and castille soap. I seen today another video that uses vet wrap at base and might try as it's easier to keep in place. Thank you and your garden looks great! If it ever warms up here in WI we might get to plant one.
Thanks for such an inspiring and relaxing video even though you did so much hard work! Do you ever also have just squash bugs? These squash bugs lay their eggs on the leaves.
Thanks for watching Valerie! Yes we do sometimes have squash bugs but we have lots of good critters in the garden as well that help keep down on them 😊
Very good information and wise wisdom. In the past we had not been very successful growing squash but with the examples you showed in the vid we hope this year would be different. God Bless you
This is an heirloom straight neck yellow squash. They were very hard to find fir the past 2 years now so we definitely plan to save seeds this year! Thanks for watching
@@humbleservantshomestead7974 so you must grow just that one variety to avoid cross pollination? I want to do that with tomatoes this year and may net them to avoid crossing so I don't have to separate them 100s of feet. Bees are attracted more so to squash then tomatoes, but like you I want to save same seed as planted as the cost and finding varieties is Tuff unlike I've ever seen.
Thank you for sharing valuable natural information …two yrs ago I planted zucchini and summer squash in which vine bores over took and discouraged me for planting this past season but next season I’m gonna try your two step methods and see how it works thank you and please keep up your videos
hello , I'm Brad from Kajun Homestead and beekeeping , just found your channel, I really enjoyed your video , love squash and i'm going to try tying them up this year , thanks for all the info. have a bless day 👍
I just found your channel. Thank you for the great information! I learned so much!! This will help me take care of my garden so much better this year. 🙂
Another tip is to have an organic catipllar pesticide and syringe handy. If you see signs of a vine borer in your plant, inject the pesticide into the vine. You can also cut them out with a razor. Plant will recover.
To protect my tomatoes as I'm trimming back it's lower leaves, is to also trim the marigolds I have growing next to them. The scent from the marigolds masks the scent of the trimmed tomatoes. I've also used peppermint spray. Would this work for the squash plants as well?
I have just started using Dr Bronners Peppermint Castile Soap mixed with water on ALL my garden plants. Bugs I never saw coming flying off all of them when I spray this on them. Not sure how long the scent will last but it has sure made them all fly away. It definitely works on my squash & zucchini plants. I sprayed them just yesterday after thoroughly checking the plants. I saw a few squash bugs and squished them but after I sprayed them with the Peppermint soap, Holy Moly, they came from everywhere, were kinda dazed so I had a field day squished those that had eluded me! Now if I could just get rid of those squash vine borers, 4th planting of squash and they still got every single one (6 plants of each). I even used some BT mixed with peppermint soap on them but it did no good. I injected the squash stems/vines with diluted BT but they still found their way to the plants. Even put diatomaceous earth all over the lower part of the plants AFTER I sprayed them but that didn't even stop them. It is almost like I've been invaded by Squash Vine borers!! They have a never-ending cycle here in the deep south. My only alternative will be to try to grow some in my greenhouse and hand pollinate to have ANY kind of squash. I do plan to saturate all my gardening tubs & raised beds with diatomaceous earth & BT (organic pesticide) this fall AND spring in hopes to kill the egg larva of these bugs that hibernated in the soil over winter. Maybe THAT will at least help control them. I don't have anything planted IN GROUND except sweet potatoes as my soil is mostly clay & iron rock but I did clear an area big enough to grow more sweet potatoes than I could in tubs/raised beds. They are about the only vegetable I was able to grow (so far) without any major problems with bugs/worms or the UV/radiation rays burning them up. Thank GOODNESS I have them in partial shade during the extreme heat of the day so they are THRIVING & GROWING WELL I am at a loss as to what else to do to get rid of those borers so I can grow one of my fav summer veggies. Any body else have any other suggestions or advice as to what I can do??? Thank you in advance for ANY HELP you can offer.
Hi, thanks for the video. What was the mix inside in your sprayer and the bucket you put on the ground? The sound is not clear. Thank you so much. God bless!
Great vidoe! I live just north of Houston, Tx and just pulled out my second planting of yellow squash & zucchini because of vine borers. Question: What is the amount of neem oil and Castile soap per gallon of water? AND how often do you spray them?
Please be more specific on your mixture. I assume the neem oil is mixed according to directions, but how much of the Castile soap, and there seems to be many different “types” of it. Which are you using?
We mix at a ratio of 1 tablespoon of neem oil and 1 tablespoon of castille soap to 1 gallon of water. This video should help you out with the measurements ruclips.net/video/CTKO-2YfvUM/видео.html
The trimming of lower leaves is a great idea to get air flow and prevents disease.

Such a gorgeous garden!!
Wow! Your garden plants look so healthy. Thank you for the demonstrations.
You're very welcome! Thank you for tuning in!
Wishing you some relief from the vine borers to grow some squash. Let us know if you find a solution that works for you
I was wondering about staking and not letting stem root. Great blessings everybody.
I saw a comment where someone put freaking wood glue on the stem and blasted DE on that. After it rains I’m gonna try it
Thanks for such an inspiring and relaxing video even though you did so much hard work! Do you ever also have just squash bugs? These squash bugs lay their eggs on the leaves.
Thanks for watching Valerie! Yes we do sometimes have squash bugs but we have lots of good critters in the garden as well that help keep down on them 😊
Awesome information! What is the amount of Neem and Castile used?
Great harvest and beautiful plants
How much neem and how much castile soap? Love your channel and your squash is amazing!
Beautiful looking squash!
Thanks Angela!
Your crops look amazing!
Very good information and wise wisdom. In the past we had not been very successful growing squash but with the examples you showed in the vid we hope this year would be different. God Bless you
Beautiful garden! Thanks for the tips God bless y’all!!
really helpful stuff. God bless.
Great tip on picking the plants for seeds and succession planting. What variety of squash is this?
Man those hills are the way to go!!!

I’m use this on my cucumbers , pumpkin and watermelon also.
I like this video. What is the ratio of water to need oil and castile soap?
1 gallon of water for 1 tablespoon of castile soap and 1 table spoon of need oil
Just found your channel! What a beautiful garden! Thanks for the tips and ideas for growing the squash vertical! Yeshua bless!
I just found your channel. Thank you for the great information! I learned so much!! This will help me take care of my garden so much better this year. 🙂
Awesome Linda! Welcome to our channel
What is the name of that second treatment? Excellent video!! Thank you
Hi there Margaret! The second treatment was food grade diatomaceous earth(DE). You can get it at your local feed store or online. Happy gardening
@@humbleservantshomestead7974 thank you. I didn't see your answer earlier so I asked again. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!
Thank you and GOD Bless to all.
Your garden is beautiful..... I need to come for a visit and learn from you.....
Thank you family!
Thank you so much! I just found a squash vine borer has killed two of my squash. I’ll know next growing season how to prevent them. God bless!
Another tip is to have an organic catipllar pesticide and syringe handy. If you see signs of a vine borer in your plant, inject the pesticide into the vine. You can also cut them out with a razor. Plant will recover.
I sprinkled a small amount of Sevin dust on the main-vine just under the soil. I didn’t have one vine borer.
To protect my tomatoes as I'm trimming back it's lower leaves, is to also trim the marigolds I have growing next to them. The scent from the marigolds masks the scent of the trimmed tomatoes. I've also used peppermint spray. Would this work for the squash plants as well?
That is a great question! We have never used this method but do keep us posted on how it works out for you if you do use it!
Beautiful garden
Thank you! We are anxiously awaiting the season to start this year
Hi, thanks for the video. What was the mix inside in your sprayer and the bucket you put on the ground? The sound is not clear. Thank you so much. God bless!
Great video! Thank you! You have the most beautiful squash I have ever seen!!
With this process you will have beautiful squash plants this year as well family
Thank you! This is going to help me so much this year
Great vidoe! I live just north of Houston, Tx and just pulled out my second planting of yellow squash & zucchini because of vine borers. Question: What is the amount of neem oil and Castile soap per gallon of water? AND how often do you spray them?
Thank you. I have a question, how often should you put diatomaceous, I lost all of my spaghetti squash this year.
What is the mix your using? Lean, castile soap and water?
Please be more specific on your mixture. I assume the neem oil is mixed according to directions, but how much of the Castile soap, and there seems to be many different “types” of it. Which are you using?
We mix at a ratio of 1 tablespoon of neem oil and 1 tablespoon of castille soap to 1 gallon of water. This video should help you out with the measurements ruclips.net/video/CTKO-2YfvUM/видео.html
