Not sure, if you've seen it already, but I feel like you might really like the show "The Expanse" on Amazon Prime ... its not exactly apocalyptic, but its probably my favorite sci-fi/space show ever and has some incredible visuals ...
The Expanse is quite possibly the best sci-fi series ever, and that's coming from a huge Star Trek fan. Just out and I'm trying to like it but not sure of, is Debris. I love the concept more than anything.
I would like to suggest Another Earth, its not necessarily apocalyptic it is more of a philosophical exploration of "another earth" suddenly appearing and orbiting our sun and the orbital patterns criss cross close enough and the implications that arise from such a cosmic surprise. Very good drama/philosophical/scifi movie that's super underrated imo. If you're familiar/fan of Brit Marling and haven't seen it please do.

This reminded me of a pretty great book series by Susan Beth Pfeffer. I read it like 10 years ago or something so it might be more directed towards teenagers but I think it's still worth a look. Anyway, the first book is called "The world as we knew it". An astroid hits the moon and pushes it towards earth which causes a lot of natural catastrophies. We follow a family of four, trying to survive in a world that changes drastically from what they were used to.
What a great suggestion! I thk she was actually aiming towards young adult wasn't she in her reading list video? I seem to remember her saying she likes them.
Fun fact, I watched the knowing back in 2007/8? At one of those free movie review premieres and im not sure if the ending is the same but originally it ended with the entire planet like exploding and everyone dying, they didn't even have the movie fully completed because the last 5-10 minutes were incomplete cgi like watching a video game.
I highly recommend Annihilation. It’s a sort of apocalypse/natural disaster movie about a meteor from space landing and emitting a “shimmer” that affects and mutates any matter inside of it. A beautiful high budget film, one of my favorites.
It’s not a sci-fi or horror and not in space BUT this list made me think of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which is one of my favorite movies ever! It’s definitely good if you want a more “realistic” apocalypse (no human optimism hahah) and the end made me so emotional!
I was frustrated with Melancholia I was so into it. I was overwhelmed with everything. The story was confusing and it was chaotic. The third part was WILD. It was sad and hopeless. As of today, idk how I feel about it.
Melancholia was set very low volume wise, kept turning it up higher and higher..........suddenly realised in the last 5 minutes of the film as to why be warned it was goosebump worthy (must have been amazing at the cinema) wonderful film...watch it when you are feeling low.
If you ever feel like giving anime a change: Voices of a Distant Star. Australian movie: These final hours- it does not take place in space but the "conflict" comes from space. This is the best apocalypse movie I ever saw, also just one of the best movies I ever watched.
A very confusing but visually interesting movie is Color out of Space. It doesn't take place in space but something out of space is the threat. It's more of a horror movie. I don't know if it's an "apocalypse" because it mainly focusses on one family but it's worth a watch :)
I'm glad you talked about Aniara, it has been in my watch list forever and I never knew if it was worth a watch. Definitely checking it out tonight. My 10th movie would be Another Earth! Even though not technically an apocalypse film.
I saw "Melancholia" at a private screening in Los Angeles. Kirsten Dunst was there for a Q&A afterward. It's a beautiful film. I have it on Blu-Ray and even have an original one-sheet poster hanging in my kitchen. You should check out other Lars von Trier films. "Breaking the Waves", "Antichrist", and "Dancer In the Dark" are just a few other feel-good films he directed. Great video!
Just found your channel! I'm probably gonna binge over the next few days because I'm loving your POV on films. I do have a suggestion. It's not really space or apocalypse horror, but have you seen Coherence? It's kind of an existential/psychological thriller spurned by outer space events
Girl u have no clue how excited I am to watch this! Keep it up ur doing great and I’m proud of u! Ur beautiful and u made my day🥰 (ps plz watch dead set 2008 Ik we ain’t the biggest fans of zombies but we love some reality tv highly recommend) ily
Melancholia hit me hard the first time I saw it. Which would be the only time I've seen it.. it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. And one of the most impactful films to me personally. That ending scene basically took my breath away. I've always been scared of an asteroid hitting earth, or a space explosion, etc killing off earth ever since I was a child, and this movie captured that kind of fear, and nihilistic depression I've felt throughout my life often. Such a strong movie. Now the funny thing is, with a movie I consider a masterpiece, you'd think I would surely see it more than once, but I'm scared of ruining that first time experience I had with the film. Like maybe certain things I remember about the film are actually different or something. Idk. Really strange, so I can't explain it. But when I saw that film, I was in a certain head space.. and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Very happy to hear you mention it lol
Thanks for the genre tips Sarah. Here's one I bet you've never seen. On the borderlands between post-apocalyptic and space apocalypse is the unusual film The Quiet Earth. It's a very low budget mysterious 1985 film from New Zealand with a pretty interesting performance by Bruno Lawrence. I suspect that this film is up your alley. Especially the final moment. Hunt it down.
1981's Outland - Sean Connery a marshall on Jupiter's moon and 1984's Night or the Comet- Haile's comet type of event, everyone watching the comet turns to dust. If you haven't seen, you'll probably like them. Little dated but still great.
It is debatable that the apocalypse event in 'The Road' is caused by a space related event. One of my favorite books and movies. I would add that to the list.
A super tip if you like spectacular visuals...one of my three favorite films is called "Chushingura" directed by Inagaki. It is japanese, as my other two favorites 'seven samurai', and 'sanjuro', by kurosawa.
First off, I greatly appreciate the Shudder promo code. I can’t wait to check out everything this app/streaming service has to offer. Second, MASSIVE respect for your list/taste in the Sci-Fi genre! Interstellar is in my Top 5 favorite films of all-time.
Sarah, Thanks for the list. I’ve only seen a couple of these movies so I can’t wait to watch the rest. Love your channel. Can’t go to the movie theater yet so your recommended list is always appreciated!!!
Thank you so much for this list you were so right in saying it’s so hard to find a specific list of just sci-fi/space apocalypse movies! Watching Melancholia tonight!
Omg I love that you posted this!! Huge fan of this sub genre. Also I watched melancholia a few weeks ago and I was looking through your channels to see if you had reviewed it before because I could’ve sworn you talked about it😂 love that movie so much!!!
I LOVE space apocalypse movies, too! I can watch 'em all just for the visuals. Watched Aniara last night. Wow. And I share your hope for the end of the Earth: watchin' another planet hurtle towards us. What a sight!! Have you seen Cargo (2009), German film? Or Europa Report (2013)? The Expanse on Amazon Prime is also a great recommendation! Pandorum (2009), Event Horizon (1997). Not necessarily apocalyptic, some, but close. Oh, and Last and First Men (2020)!! Great video, Sarah!
I didn't see the wandering earth. I had heard about it and was poisoned against it. I heard about it because it was pinned the "highest budget film China every made". I'll watch it now. I love Ad Astra so much. I loved it on first watch. It's so chill. I watch it pretty often. I love Aniara as well. Jesus Christ that movie. It's brutal af. So amazing. This video has inspired me to chat about what films I really enjoy. Thanks Sarah.
This is a great sub-genre, and the list contains Aniara, the only one that I haven't seen that I certainly NEED to watch ASAP. I loved 3022 which I saw after you recommended it. Great story. I was so fortunate to see The Wandering Earth on the big screen during it's limited US release and the CGI didn't really hold up for me. If this one ever gets a Hollywood remake, I think the visuals could definitely be improved (predominantly in the disaster set pieces) but the space stuff with the planets did look beautiful! You'll be happy to know that China is making a sequel!! (The Wandering Earth grossed $700M worldwide!!)
@@megansimplystitch we're getting a new blu ray release from Shout Factory! It still won't be everything, but the list of special features is great. Definitely better than the bare bones releases we've had heretofore.
Aniara is quite possibly the most depressing movie I’ve ever seen. My husband and I had a “space movie” marathon and we watched Interstellar, Ad Astra, and Aniara. My husband who absolutely hates depressing movies LOVED Aniara which I did not expect and I was left feeling so so sad and upset 😂 Interstellar makes me sob every time I watch it.
@TP lol sometimes films create their own reality and you just have to immerse yourself in it instead of trying to apply logic to everything. Not all films take place in our reality some take place in a dream state in order to illustrate it’s themes. Melancholia is a film about depression, and there’s not a lot of things more depressing than us being alone in the universe.
As a dedicated fan of science fiction, this video fills me with life. :3 1) Melancholia didn't really do it for me. :/ 2) Now I want to watch Aniara. 3) I rewatched Interstellar last year as part of a "Biggest Sci-Fi Films I've Seen Between 2013 and 2020" retrospective and gained a greater appreciation for it than I already did. I was struck by how eerily it felt like the current state of the world. 4) Did you know that the reason the Sun is dying prematurely in Sunshine is because it's been "infected" by a Q-ball? 5) I'd watch The Wandering Earth again, but only with friends. 6) And another movie on my "Biggest Sci-Fi Films I've Seen Between 2013 and 2020" retrospective. Of the films on that list, Ad Astra was the one where my opinion changed the most. I was disappointed when I first saw it, but gained greater appreciation for it after the retrospective. 7) Hmm, going to have to give Greenland a look. 8) Yeah, going to have to give Knowing a hard pass. 9) Hmm, going to have to give 3022 a look. As to the tenth entry on this list, Life (2017) is definitely a solid choice. Perhaps The Midnight Sky from last year? Or Mad Max: Fury Road?
have you seen apocalypse now? it’s not at all based around space, but it is apocalypse-like and has a lot to do with psychology and how situations affect the mind. knowing your taste i think you’d really enjoy it, but i also think it’d be a movie you describe the way you described melancholia or hereditary, where it affects you pretty heavily. overall it was easily worth it for me and really changed my perspective on life.
Oh and I'm surprised that The Fountain hasn't been mentioned yet. Though.. I guess you could argue about whether it actually has a real apocalypse in it, it certainly feels like one at the end.
I agree with you 100% about Melancholia. I think about Voyager 1’s photo “The pale blue dot” and the earth being wiped away in such a insignificant event to the universe. Voyager 1 & 2 then being the only monuments that we had existed.
If I could give this video something higher than a thumbs up I would. The Titan with Sam Worthington and Taylor Schilling. A neat little pre-apocalyptic, quasi creature feature. 3 out of 5 watch. Also, love the long hair and the glowing disposition you have. IO last on Earth is also a good film but kind of skirts the line on this sub-genre.
nothing truly scares me like a space apocalypse, it gives me awful anxiety but i love to torture myself and watch these films. Melancholia triggered me, you definitely got be in the right frame of mind I think!

First of all, amazing video as usual. Second of all, YOU LOOK SO GOOD GIRL, KILLING IT ASFFFF
I highly recommend Annihilation. It’s a sort of apocalypse/natural disaster movie about a meteor from space landing and emitting a “shimmer” that affects and mutates any matter inside of it. A beautiful high budget film, one of my favorites.
Have you seen Moon (2009, Sam Rockwell)? One of my favourite movies of all time.
I love Moon too. Have you seen Mute? Same writer/director.
omg yes LOVE Moon
‘Moon’ is 🔥
It’s not a sci-fi or horror and not in space BUT this list made me think of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which is one of my favorite movies ever!
"jupiter is one of my favorite planets in our solar system"- says the pisces sun & sag moon 😌😎😊
i love astrology 🤍✨
You are looking so beautiful lately girl, love the hair!
Ok, super off topic but, the fit of that shirt on you is AMAZING! it makes your arms and shoulders look SO good!!!
Great list and thank you for sharing. I would add Annihilation, one of my favs. Keep up the great work; love your videos. 👏🏻😷💥
Omg, how did I forget Another Earth?! Love Brit Marling!
It’s so nice to see other people out there know about Another Earth! Just left a comment recommending it. Also really love Brit Marling!
I’m massively here for extremely specific/niche lists! 🖤😂 Love your hair and makeup in this video! 🖤
I just watched Arrival and I think you would absolutely love it! So spacey and also psychological!
1981's Outland - Sean Connery a marshall on Jupiter's moon
and
1984's Night or the Comet- Haile's comet type of event, everyone watching the comet turns to dust.
If you haven't seen, you'll probably like them. Little dated but still great.
Hah, the first one I thought of was Outland too :)
Nice! I used to watch Night of the Comet when I was babysitting. Best kind of cheese.
Yay this apartment makes you glow🌟 Change is good 😊
Melancholia is a masterpiece. As well as The House that Jack Built, Dogville, Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark.
Sarah,
Thanks for the list.
Melancholia is one of the scariest most beautiful movies. It has stuck with me since the day I watched it I think about it all the time
I love Sunshine so much. Very underappreciated.
Interstellar is my favorite movie ever and I haven’t seen It in a very long time, sadly. I need to go back to it, it’s so moving
Omg this subgenre is soooo gold thank you so much for making this
Omg I love that you posted this!!
*Greenland (2020)* made your list, but I am surprised *_The Midnight Sky (2020)_* didn't make it.
I think Greenland is a better film and I enjoyed it more than Midnight Sky. 🤷🏾♀️
Not entirely apocalyptic, but what's your view on Event Horizon?
I'm a big fan of Event Horizon. I wish the stored film hadn't degraded, so we could have watched the uncut/ director's cut of the movie.
One of the best films ever
@@megansimplystitch we're getting a new blu ray release from Shout Factory! It still won't be everything, but the list of special features is great. Definitely better than the bare bones releases we've had heretofore.
Aniara is quite possibly the most depressing movie I’ve ever seen. My husband and I had a “space movie” marathon and we watched Interstellar, Ad Astra, and Aniara. My husband who absolutely hates depressing movies LOVED Aniara which I did not expect and I was left feeling so so sad and upset 😂 Interstellar makes me sob every time I watch it.
Meloncholia is SO beautiful! I find it hard to describe adequately to anyone. When I watched it a second time I loved it even more
Melancholia is the ONLY horror movie to still give me nightmares to this day, and I’m almost 30
Been waiting for a list like this forever! Can’t wait to start watching the list
As a dedicated fan of science fiction, this video fills me with life. :3
1) Melancholia didn't really do it for me. :/
2) Now I want to watch Aniara.
Melancholia is one of my faves as well, just love that apocalyptic stormy vibe it kinda slaps you in the face
This isn’t space but watch time lapse. Soo good!
have you seen apocalypse now? it’s not at all based around space, but it is apocalypse-like and has a lot to do with psychology and how situations affect the mind. knowing your taste i think you’d really enjoy it, but i also think it’d be a movie you describe the way you described melancholia or hereditary, where it affects you pretty heavily. overall it was easily worth it for me and really changed my perspective on life.
Annihilation was what originally got me into cosmic horror!
Oh and I'm surprised that The Fountain hasn't been mentioned yet. Though.. I guess you could argue about whether it actually has a real apocalypse in it, it certainly feels like one at the end.
I was thinking about that, but like you said, it's not really clear what the heck it is. It reminds me of _Cloud Atlas._ 🤷
I agree with you 100% about Melancholia. I think about Voyager 1’s photo “The pale blue dot” and the earth being wiped away in such a insignificant event to the universe. Voyager 1 & 2 then being the only monuments that we had existed.
I could listen to Sarah for hours and hours. She's fantastic!
I have realised we have the same taste in movies. Love your reccomendations
For some reason Knowing really scared me when I watched it, I haven't seen it since then but it really stuck with me
If I could give this video something higher than a thumbs up I would.
YESSS for the Ad Astra love! I love it so much I think it deserves better
nothing truly scares me like a space apocalypse, it gives me awful anxiety but i love to torture myself and watch these films. Melancholia triggered me, you definitely got be in the right frame of mind I think!
