I ran into my wife while this song was playing on the overhead of a Kash and Karry supermarket near USF in Tampa in the late '80s. For some reason I started a conversation about the song and she said she liked Danny Wilson, me being a dumb 22 year old Temple Terrace kid simply agreed. Fast forward a week, I work at Busch Gardens and go to a worker party after hours and guess who is there? We talk a bit more and with a 4 beer courage I get a date and 3 or 4 years later we were married and still are for 30 years now. Our daughter is at FSU. Time flies y'all. Great song, it is the song I heard when I met my wife!
What a wonderful story! Happened upon the movie "Something About Mary" again a few days ago and heard a quick clip of this song. Remembered how much I loved it years ago and searched to find this! Haven't heard it in years. The version on Spotify is much different, so I'm happy that I found this video version. Also glad that I happened upon your story. Congrats on a long and happy marriage!
There is NOTHING like 80's music. NOTHING. This song actually made me cry 35 years later. My sister singing this in the living room is a powerful memory, and brought me here. Thank you Danny. You have no idea what this song means to me.

The 80s, as a whole, was not the strongest overall decade of music. Sound was unique. Mary's prayer was great. So many good ones but, as a whole, it had pockets that were substantially better. Certainly better than today but I would argue 1991-1994 is substantially better than any 4 years in the 70s. 70-75 is way better in all aspects, top to bottom. 65-68 is much better as well. When you formulate the decades together the 80s ranks better than the entire 90s (but the 91-94 area trumps any subsequent 4 year period in the 80s), 00s, 10s. Lags significantly behind the strength of the 70s and evolutionary 50s. Probably, even with the power groups of the Beatles, etc. beats out the 60s
I can't believe this song only reached #23 on the US billboard charts when it came out back in 1987. Definitely the most underrated tune that ever came out over the airways.
This song came out when I was a teenager and it just grabbed me. Back in those days, there wasn’t internet or google I patiently waited to hear it again and when it came on the radio, I froze and listened After all these years I still feel the same way. Beautiful, amazing song
Ahhh, yes, you said it well :) YEah... such great memories... hearing a song, and just waiting and waiting for it to come on again. And then when it did..... oh Joy oh Bliss ;)
It doesn't have to be complex, if a song elevates your soul, and makes you feel good, happy and alive then it's an excellent song. That is what Danny Wilson's Mary's prayer does for me.
I'd be honored if some fans of under-the-radar 80s classics would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of MARY'S PRAYER by Danny Wilson and LIFE IN A NORTHERN TOWN by Dream Academy on my channel in tribute to the era. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and pardon the promo.

My wife and I had an argument 2 days ago that resulted in both of us slamming doors. Last night at 3am I woke with this song in my head. Hadn't heard it in decades. Sat in garage to listen and read the lyrics. I believe God sent me this song to reconsile with my wife. Read the lyrics and you'll understand.
The song is about a guy who takes his girlfriend for granted and she left. He only realizes his mistake when it is too late. It of course applies to anyone who takes advantage of another person. Hope it works out for you.
I hope it worked out and you are getting on again mate! songs always mean different things to different people and you reflect on the words and their meaning.
It's one of those songs that pop into your head out of the blue. When you grew up as a young child in the 80's, these old gems find a permanent place in your head. Timeless classics like this song.
Every time I hear this song I just cry so heavily. The day before I turned 17 I lost my grandmother. Til this day every time I think of her watching over me in heaven. I love and miss you grandmom. RIP Mary G. 8-4/11-28
I haven't heard this song for such a long time, maybe decades. I knew the tune but not the lyrics nor the singer. But now I do. Such a nostalgic reminder of the late 80s.
For me this was one of those timeless songs released when I was a teenager, totally forgotten for 30 years until now and it’s instantly remembered as if it was yesterday. It truly is / was a wonderful record.

@@andrewm8831 The meaning of the song? It’s a guy singing a girl who he wished he still had, one he blew it with ( did I have to make this mess) when she was in his life. “ I made such a big mistake when I was Mary’s prayer”
For almost thirty years, I've loved this song. I've never gotten tired of hearing it. oh man...what i wouldn't give to go back to 1987...why did those days ever have to go?...
That is so true for this song. I heard it on the radio as a kid when it was new. Yeas later I searched for it, as it just stayed in my head. Now I have it on CD, and Still listen to it here. I personally made such a big mistake, letting my ex wife go.
I loved this song when I was a kid because my older brother liked it. My brother died last December aged just 47, and this song now has extra significance. Always loved it, always love you Matt
Loved this song the first time I heard it. I had an elderly friend named Mary, so I recorded it on cassette tape and played it for her. She loved it! I may have been 20 years old then, I'm 64 now.
this reminds me of being a child, on the swing in my back garden listening to this on the radio, on a hot summer's day, not a care in the world, what I would give to relive one moment of that happiness!!!!
Probably a tad older than yourself, but the Brits were pumping out some, if not the best, pop music ever during the 80's. Love listening to all kinds of music these days, but often can't stop myself from going back and listening to those 80's classics and this is clearly one of them!
One of my favourite lines in a song " blessed is the millionare who shares your wedding day " ..it says so much in such a short sentence...absolute genius writing .
I have to say that when this song came out, I would cry everytime I heard it. Her name was Wendy, and she loved me to distraction. I took that for granted, always looking for greener pastures, and would leave her when I found them. She always took me back... until she didn't. I did the usual pleading and persuading, but it was too late. I was gone from her heart. That was almost 45 years ago, and I regret it to this day. We both moved on, and have had happy and healthy lives, but what I wouldn't give to be, when I was Wendy's prayer.
heard this song the other day. and then realised how quickly our years disappear. our young days and friends . are but a blip. but the music continues . peace and love everybody .
50 years old and still love this song.. What's crazy is haven't heard it in decades and didn't remember the name.. So I googled 80s song Mary and it popped up❤
A 50 year old 1980's nostalgic man. Because you used "Bloody" are you from England? If so, do you know of any British offer to let Americans move to Britain from America? I'd give my house in exchange for a house in Britain.
I used to listen to this song when I was broken hearted because the guy I loved only saw me as a friend and I knew he was going to regret letting me go, he actually did and after some time appart we got together again and now he's going to be the one "who will share my wedding day"
Beautiful song that lifted my sad spirits during a very rough post-college period 1987-88. This song was big on the charts in late Summer 1987. Asking for someone to pray for you is always good if you are a person of faith. Blessings will follow albeit never in the exact way or timing you wanted. Some 35 years later, retired and happily married this song still has relevance to me. Enjoying a happy retirement where I can be on you tube even at midnight and reflecting back on God's wonderful grace!
I never knew who sang this terrific song back in the 80's but always liked it. But I just re-watched the movie "There's Something About Mary" tonight & was blown away by it all over again. I can't believe i've been living without it all these yrs. Anyway i'm glad that I finally found out who sang it cuz no 80's hits collection is truly complete without this one.
funny as hell, I watched the movie last night, paused it and went on a mission to find this fantastic and personally meaningful song. I had never known all the lyrics until now. Damn good.
The most beautiful song I've ever heard I'm crying while typing this I came across this playing drums it just happened to appear I love it I needed to hear this
The end of this great song always brings tears to my eyes… Call it nostalgia, melancholy or anything else but when it happens for the last 38 years it means something deep! ❤
My mother's name was Mary...when she passed away missed by so many...an angel...35 years 8th June...if you shake the tree to hard...leave a light on mam😢🙏💙 amazing song ❤
🙋, right here. I remember when it hit the airways. Loved it, then didn't hear for years until the Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz movie " Something About Mary" .
This is my mother’s favourite song. She used to listen to it when lacing up the boots of the inhabitants of our tenement. Everyone else living there had clumsy finger,s o she did it out the kindness of her heart
I've been listening to this since it came out in the 80s. Everytime it takes me back to great days, style, everyone together. I literally listen to it everyday as it cheers me up no end. An absolutely brilliant tune!
There is just something MAGICAL AND BEAUTIFUL about this song. It tugs at my heartstrings, and I get chills every single time I play it...and that is ALOT!!
I like this song very much Mary is Jesus mother nobody can contend with that I have suffered so many tremendous things in my 62 years it have to be a son to survive at all I think the Lord may find me a woman to come to my home and be that very thing that I've been really wanting all my life the same made from the science fiction nightmare that I've endured blessed be God forever he is able to do above and beyond what we ask or think I cannot live anymore like I am and the condition of my life I've asked the Lord to send a rescue mission from heaven he will get it done for my sake amen thank you so much for your song Danny
This song came out my Freshman year of high school. I had no idea who sang this song. This was way before Google. I had to record it off of the radio on my cassette tape and hoped they would say the artist's name. 40 years later, I still get nostalgic and listen to this song on that same cassette. Great song!!
I have heard this song before, but only in grocery stores. The chorus' "save me" I could work out, but was it. Not enough to Google and find out what it was. Then the other day, it was playing loudly (along with other songs) at the local Applebees and I was finally able to hear more lyrics. All the references to "Mary" unsettled me, but it seems they are strictly metaphorical; the song is apparently a love song.
A comedian did a skit about hearing a song once before the internet. It would drive you crazy until you met someone a few years later who could give you the whole story of the song. His punchline: "That was how you met your wife!"
Oh wow...I forgot all about this wonderful song. It brings back so many great memories of the 1980's. It was the best time of my life...happy and sad at the same time. Thank you Danny Wilson ...you are a part of the soundtrack to my life!
I've been hearing this song in my head for the last couple of days, but couldn't remember the actual name of the song. All I could remember was "Keep a light on in Heaven", so I'm glad I remembered at least that much, because the song popped up on YT. So glad to actually hear it again. I don't know if anyone else feels the same as I do, but I miss our music and the times we had. I miss our lives, and the planned dreams we had before 2020. 🌻💕. God bless you to whomever is reading this. 🤗
Oh! My! Gawd! I had completely forgotten about this song and heard it on the system at Sam's Club. I instantly stopped, stunned, and listened and it struck some vague memory. I got my phone about right as it was ending and Shazaamed it. Once I heard the beginning I knew it!! I loved this song when it was out and somehow I forgot about it. I've listened to it a thousand times since then and it will be forgotten no longer!!
I had the exact same thing happen to me in a supermarket two days ago. It stirred up this vague memory of some deep feeling. It was like a blurry time machine. I got on my phone right away too and was afraid if I didn't hurry I'd lose this song again. Now I've been playing it over and over. No one I've asked remembers it. It's like I found a magical hidden treasure. It's amazing how just a few bars of music can open a door to part of my past that I'd forgotten. Thanks for sharing.
Only a poet could pack this much pathos into this short verse. Only a Master Band could deliver it. "One Hit Wonder..." So what. Power is power. Art is art.
This song was playing in my head the latter half of 2016. I found out later my childhood friend, whose name was Mary, had passed away. Going to miss "Mary" forever! Love this song. Thank you.
1987 I remember this video on MTV they didn't play it all that much 1987 what's the best year of my life wonderful wonderful year I was 19 years old and party like crazy this song makes me happy I miss the 80's what a wonderful decade to be a young man

A great track from a magical time in 1987. I was living in Scotland and Mary's Prayer was played on every radio station going. A beautiful pop-song from an excellent band of talented musicians who were nothing less than local heroes!
Life was so simple, we found joys in little things, we had really friends we played with. My God life was so full of promise. My God it seems so near, yet so far.

you are so right, if i knew then , what i know now.....i would cherish it so much more....Wish i could do it one more time....
Exactly
One does.
Of course we miss it, but You're right, we took it for granted..
I feel genuinely sorry for the kids of today who never had the pleasure of growing up with 80's classics like this.
@Ivan Nugent I wouldn't be. It's shite mostly lol.

I can't believe this song only reached #23 on the US billboard charts when it came out back in 1987. Definitely the most underrated tune that ever came out over the airways.
My mother use to cry listening to this song because it reminded her of her father. Now ive got tears in my eyes because it reminds me of her.
That's beautiful and sad and beautiful 🥲
This song is just beautiful
Reminds me of my sister, she was good to me. She passed almost two years ago. Top sis.

I'm sorry for your loss❤️.
This song came out when I was a teenager and it just grabbed me. Back in those days, there wasn’t internet or google
I patiently waited to hear it again and when it came on the radio, I froze and listened
After all these years I still feel the same way. Beautiful, amazing song
I didn't know most of the words until years later when I could look it up. The 70's and 80's were great , except no internet.
And me as well!
...what he said.

ALL THE TALENT HAS GONE!!!

I know exactly how you feel. Whenever I hear it I have an overwhelming urge to cry my heart out in happy nostalgia. Such a beautiful, soulful song. ❤

A 50 year old 1980's nostalgic man. Because you used "Bloody" are you from England? If so, do you know of any British offer to let Americans move to Britain from America? I'd give my house in exchange for a house in Britain.
I used to listen to this song when I was broken hearted because the guy I loved only saw me as a friend and I knew he was going to regret letting me go, he actually did and after some time appart we got together again and now he's going to be the one "who will share my wedding day"
That's so sweet. Some times it is the time apart that "seals the deal.
Congrats !!!
How great is that!!! "Everything is wonderful, being here is heavenly..."
How did the wedding day go?

Its much easier now isnt it?
