Just flew in from Michigan to clean up my Boca Grande North condo. The condo association has been doing a fantastic job coordinating the cleanup and repairs. Spent the weekend picking up drywall in my condo and moving everything out of the way for the contractors. Feeling optimistic for the first time since the hurricane.
It’s going to be awhile before we can get our home livable again. Contractors are so busy and called for a dumpster. They called and canceled due to the dump being destroyed. Our town and life is forever changed.
If these poor people aren’t already sick all of these noxious fumes will do them in. I hate all of this so bad. God bless them all. And God bless you Jose for showing us the devastation but at the same time being respectful to these families.💕
The difference between Boca and Northport is they're mostly millionaires and billionaires on Boca. They mostly will not feel the loss like the other regular people because they can afford repairs. All loss is sad but my heart goes out to mobile and other homeowners not able to afford Fl huge deductibles on homeowners. It's unconsciable
There are so many RV'S that are not selling. In our city in Oregon the dealer's lots are so full they will never sell. Why can't these home's and large campers be donated to those on need from all states. They are just going to pay for their inventory so why not a small incentive for them to give to people in need. The news goes so fast, people are in turmoil and not think if our beautiful Florida. Begin to put out more info on the current conditions and tell people and company's end of year inventory would be so helpful. Just a thought
Some people who live on these islands. Bought homes 40-50 years ago for maybe 200k. Properties have sky rocketed in value. A modest nice home rose to 1 and a half million. Not all are rich people
I think most people forgot about Boca grande because it is such a tiny island. I live quite near there and was wondering how they did. Very sad to see so much damage in such a beautiful place,
When my Mom lived in NW Port Charlotte, my favorite day trip was Boca Grande and the southern tip of Englewood. So heartbreaking to see. I’m grateful my Mom was not around to experience this horrible event since she passed on 20 ago. Jose thanks for sharing this with us💔💔💔 I can’t tolerate Red Tide. So allergic. 😢
Correction: Boca Grand did not have storm surge. According to Forbes Baca Grand has the wealthiest zip code in the US. That damage was 99% done by wind. If there was storm surge it would look like Sanibel. The water is not fit for any one to be in it.
Thanks Jose. I live in Naples and many of my friends lost their homes....I need to pay attention to the other areas.....prayers for all the people who are in need of repairs.
This is SO bizarre to see…I’ve been around other major hurricane aftermaths and cleanups in FL (IRMA in the Keys south of Marathon for example) and they were absolutely hives of activity. Giant earth movers loading debris onto huge haulers, relief workers and supporting crews (food prep etc.) all under fat FEMA contracts with deadline incentives. WTF is going on with all the videos I’ve seen, including incredibly expensive property areas like Boca Grande, where not only is there no apparent cleanup activity, it looks like they’ve been totally abandoned, just left behind to rot in the sun. The contrast is incredible and incredibly disturbing. It’s really beginning to feel like we’ve become some kind of Third World country that can’t deal with the technical specialized and expensive things like disaster cleanup and recovery that we used to take for granted. PERMANENTLY. Unbelievable.
I still say that a lot of these “Temporary “ dump sites may end up becoming permanent. I hope and pray that I’m wrong. A lot of comments have stated that I am wrong. Time will tell🙏🇺🇸
I agree (see my comment I just posted.) This is very weird and unlike other hurricane cleanups of the past. These places, many with previously close to 7 figure average property values, look abandoned, left behind for massive dumps. So creepy.
First time I hear about Boca Grande following hurricane Ian. I was thinking/dreaming that this part of Southwest FL was spare from this Storm. I am sadden watching this video.
We are in that area, lol!! The water under those bridges was sucked out right before the worst of the storm came in. Over the 2nd bridge to the left is our sandbar boat hang out on boat days, such fun summer days, I'm sure it's all shifted quite a bit now. And u should've smelled it the week after the storm, I live just off the island in the south gulf cove community so u probably passed my neighborhood on Gasparilla, where all the sailboats are stored and looked like dominos after the storm but it smelled like total death for several wks after, I've never smelled anything like it,, prob longer and having no power or anything we had to leave windows and doors open, the smell was just horrible! It wasn't so much red tide either, can only imagine what all contributed to the horrid smell. Not many know about Englewood either cus we are the small forgotten coastal town just off of Boca! My neighborhood is mostly newer houses to, many didn't stand up to the wind, roofs ripped off, caved in, destroyed, including our home. My husband's shop in Englewood was destroyed, he's a mechanic, they just got it all back opened finally!! And our wind speeds were 208 mph here, the news was hush hush for whatever reason but our county officials had a meeting on it and finally released wind speeds to residents! Gusts were much higher! Wind meters were set up at the boat ramps u passed as u came up to the toll to get on the island. We took a bad hit here and many don't realize it, just wish Englewood wasn't so forgotten. We are natives and Ian was the worst storm we've ever been thru and we've been thru tons! Thank u for at least going to Boca Grande to show the devastation, much of what our neighborhood looked like as well. Thank u for the coverage, great job! Oh, and one of the most Boca famous restaurants, South Beach literally right on the beach, was completely destroyed and then caught fire during the end of the storm and burnt to the ground,it was there for decades and very well known but they're rebuilding and will bounce back! Boca is such a peaceful island, we have spent many wonderful days out there exploring and beaching it!
You don't need a new tire for a nail hole. Buy a tire plug kit & always keep it in your glove box. Utube it if you need to learn. Just can't plug sidewall .but in tread area plug will last forever.
Even if most of these property owners decide to rebuild, it will take a lifetime before it all "returns to pre-hurricane normal". Problem is, when's the next major hurricane going to destroy it all again? So, is rebuilding in these vulnerable areas even a sane decision? I realize people have already sunk huge investments into their properties, but the odds are terrible. What about the private insurance companies? The risk of future bankruptcy must be 100%. Isn't there a tipping point beyond which it just becomes irrationally futile to keep rebuilding over and over again?
When the electric went off, all the sewage from Sarasota to Naples, from the city, sewer systems, was dumped into the rivers, which is now causing red tides
Thank you so much for making this video of Boca grande. I live about 15 or 20 minutes from Boca grande & I was very curious as to how well it fared. You’re exactly right that it is one of the most beautiful places in the country. It is probably one of the most exclusive places & they charge you to go over the bridge to get into Boca grande which I’m sure that that is to keep most lookee Lous away. So there is never too much traffic in that town. I’m so sorry to see it looking this way. 🥲
I HAD A HAND DRAWN PICTURE OF THE BOCA GRANDE LIGHTHOUSE ON MY WALL FOR YEARS, my favorite place to fish back in the 80's, 90's when you didn't pay to cross.
That mobile home park has been condemned and everyone had to leave! And u just passed by my street, where all the sailboats were! Those were all dominos after the storm, took them weeks to get them all standing again and I'm sure some were still down when u went by!
Thanks! Wondered how they made out… being right across the pass from Cayo Costa, where Ian made landfall… The people in the mobile home park at the end of Gasparilla Rd were told to be out by early November. So sad… Hope Katie feels better!
At 11:51 look at the construction of that house it’s a butcher job the builder should be up on charges there is no way that’s code your vid really show the details keep them coming
Red tide doesn’t bother me for some reason. I guess being from the northeast for so many years with all the pollution , red tide smells don’t really bother me. To me it just smells like low tide in the marsh.

Thank you posting this video. This island wasn't covered at all. I love that island spent a bunch of summers their.

What is a tiny houses on this island 3 million? Its just like you buying another pair of shoes to them
Ouch,.been there.done that.Learned best option is to buy an extea tire to haul with you. In case of side wall issues. Get well Katie.

People need to just start burning that trash. I'm sure it's already a health hazard.
I agree
Lots of carcinogens in all the petrochemical stuff.
That’s wonderful about the bird feeder
Red Tide is also so bad for dogs and cats. Nearly lost my boy to red tide.

doesnt really look like much is going on here..is this area mostly rentals/vacation homes??
Sometimes the condos yes but the houses are into the millions even the tiny ones
It’s a very very quiet , very old money wealthy area.
Get a N95 mask for when you walk around these areas .
I see you did about Boca grande
damn you didnt go by the gasparilla inn
if anyone has storm footage during the storm on boca grande ,id love to get a copy.
Res tide makes me cough
36 is still good
Have you done one of el-joebean yet?
Yes they got wiper out
I can’t stand to smell red tied
some people cant be affected others end up in hospital

What is red tide?
water bacteria, smells bad makes you sick
If you go there.. get a firemen calendar.. men on that department are gorgeous.. 💕
I did a video there it was hit bad
I would just plug it myself if it leaked.
Ok few animals but did people take their pets with them I hope!🐕🐶🐈🐱
Get some tire plugs at Walmart. Cheap
And where are the animals?
Well, we saw the chickens. Who probably escaped from someone's coop.
At least there will be jobs for years helping the wealthy rebuild.
i still would love to know where all this debris is going to be dumped ...(state and local}
The state needs to build a massive recycling center to take in the present and future material
⚠🏔⛄Florida still lacks of a big mountain for skiing.↘🎿
