- I have a Knee Dilemma for Hiking, you may also have the same problem? if so the help here maybe as beneficial to you as it is to me, but I need people's help, to help me with my dilemma by commenting - What do you think - Should I or Shouldn't I?
Stronger knees for continued hiking - hiking and arthritis - knee surgery.
Thanks for watching
Andy the Expedition Hiker
My husband had knee replacement 18 years ago, at age 62, after about 4 years of pain. He had the op in the May and started our walks again in the July, he went on to climb plenty of hills in the Peak District including Kinder more than a few times. He was walking until about 3 years ago, when unfortunately severe back problems brought it to an end. So he says, go for it, and very good luck. Keep walking as long as you can.
Hi thanks for the comment, I had a fitness assessment for the op on Friday and although I am apprehensive to the surgery i think I am going to go for it

We will be wishing you a speedy recovery and a very successful op 👍
Get it done mate....it's all about quality of life...lots of great walks that don't involve hills
Hi Steve i am going to go for it, just planning how I keep the channel ticking over while in recovery - but as I teach outdoor education maybe I will do some skills videos - as believe 4 months until i can go back to work after surgery - thanks
Well I wish you all the best with whatever you choose. My father now passed away had a knee replacement and was very determined to recover quickly which he did and went on to do many more backpacking trips into his 80s he was prob about 70 when he had new knees. ❤
Cheers Dave, I think I am going to go for it, because I will need the op at one point or eventually just bothered about the length of time in recovery - have to have a back up of videos to edit while off lol
Feel for ya mate, but dont listen to them re "you wont be able to..." Ten years ago I fell off my bike and snapped my olecranon (elbow). At the physio sessions they told me that I wouldnt be able to ride a bike again, especially as my arm wouldnt straighten past 40 degrees. A week later, I went to the physio session on a brand new bike! the physio didnt like that and gave me hell for the next ten weeks, but at the end of it I can straighten my arm to about ten degrees off straight and havent stopped riding since! Im not saying you will be the same, I was very lucky, but give it your best shot and good luck!
I have had big surgery already as have an artificial shoulder and that' works fine now, I think with the knee I am just bothered about the length of time on recovery as told minimum of 4 months before I can go back to work, but hope all will be great eventually - thanks
Must be so frustrating, especially as you enjoy the extra long hikes. I vote get it done - I'm sure you'll have many more years long distance hiking once it has healed. Good luck, whatever your choice.
I haven't even thought about long distance hiking, may have to do some flat long hikes, or in hot climates where knees will feel good - thanks
Have the surgery, living with pain is horrendous and you'll probably mess yourself up with painkillers, I had acl reconstruction and torn meniscus sorted
Had mine done, it hurt like hell for 3 months. Then the pain went. I fell on both my knees and still recovering. It was ok after the op. My friend had his done and goes to the Gym running.
My left knees on its way out. The pains bearable for now, but hurts daily and especially after a hike.
I guess the issue is the knee will get worse over time if you don't replace it. I guess there's only a chance that it could stop you from hiking hills. I know a few people who have had knee replacements and had no issues and feel great
Often people who give up walking have no problems cycling?
Hi, how do you manage your knee, just take pain killers, when your out walking.Ive git a bit of arthritis in my knee and planning on hiking and camping the lochness 360.My Dr said not to wear a knee support while hiking, but do you think its better with a support.Much appreciated for your advice.
I was told by my doctor to wear a brace, and he even suggested which type, I take painkillers but try to keep to a minimum as I don't want to become dependent on them I have decied to go ahead with the knee op
@@ExpeditionHiker all the best with the opp hope you have a quick recovery.Which brace did your Doc recommend.
@jamesbell5788 the knee support was just one of amazon - Avidda Knee support brace pack of 2 - £13.94
