Of course you have to introduce limitations to his bat suit, otherwise there’s no difficulty and he can go invisible all the time. Also it defeats the purpose of training and honing your skills when you can do stuf like this
Batman beyond was airing when i was a kid and was my first real exposure to batman, and it being such a great show is directly responsible for my love of batman.
Batman TAS, Beyond, and both JL runs were my childhood. It's what got me into comics and super heroes in general, and why I've always had a slight preference for DC. They're perfect incarnations of the DC characters, WB should take notes for their live action universe.
For those who don't know; Batman the Animated series and Batman Beyond are set in an interconnected universe of DC animated shows and movies known as the DCAU (DC animated universe). The other shows that exist in this universe are the new Batman Adventures, Superman, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Static Shock and the Zeta Project. The movies set in this universe are Batman Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Subzero, Batman Mystery of the Batwoman, Justice League vs the Fatal Five and (of course) Batman Beyond Return of the Joker.
Imagine Andrea Beaumont standing on the bow of that ship at the end of mask of the Phantasm, and then Amanda Waller walks out of the party holding a top secret file in her hand and simply says "Hello, Miss Beaumont. I'd like a few minutes of your time"
I’ve never been able to look past the utter absurdity of Joker coming back. First of all, since when was he some brilliant scientist? The most science-y thing he ever did was create the Joker toxin, which is a far, _far_ cry from *literally figuring out how to clone your mind onto a tiny chip that when activated will transform the host’s body into yours.* It’s just kinda... dumb, honestly. I’m also not a huge fan of how it insinuates that the only reason Joker kept coming back was because Batman never talked much to him. As if all Bruce could have stopped him a long time ago had he simply thought “hey, maybe I should try backtalking him”. That retroactively kinda cheapens Batman and Joker’s many encounters over the years and makes Bruce look really bad- apparently if he’d had this one incredibly simple idea back then, he could’ve prevented the Bat-Family from ever being torn apart.
Also, the microchip cheapens the agency of Tim's characther. It would have been much more interesting if the characther was the Joker by his own choice: at some point he would actually implant the chip on himself for the guilt he still felt in killing a person and when that guilt kicks in he becomes the Joker to let him live a bit longer (some of the previous brainwashing had its toll on his psyche)
There's a touching moment in the main series wherein Terry's little brother wants to do some SF/F way of contacting Warren McGinnis, their Dad, because he is now having trouble remembering things about him. This hits harder when you realize Matt McGinnis must also be Bruce's genetic son, a fact confirmed by Dwayne McDuffie before he left us.
I can't even describe how much I still love this movie, series and the original batman animated series. I remember watching it on kids WB when I was really little.
6:41 there was an episode that was pretty much all about the fact Terry relied a little too much on the suit's technology in order to fight, if I recall correctly
"The only way to beat a comedian is a heckler" I love this series so much because it's a proper sequel to an already great series. Batwahman on the cw is piss compared to this masterpiece. 10/10 would watch again lol
A batman arkham game based in the beyond universe would be amazing. Terry finds a batcave and a previously thought dead bruce Wayne (spoilers for knight) and teams up and fights Terry's rogues with little hints of the joker throughout the first and second game with the third being the return of the joker.
In latín América we also calle it "Batman del futuro" (lit.Batman of the future). The problem with the "beyond" word is it translates as "más allá" Which means "the other side" or Even "afterlife",soooo,ti avoid wrong messages....
I personally don't like Epiloge. I feel like it undermines too much of this show putting Amanda Waller in control of everything, and Terry being a secret clone of Bruce never felt like a genuine twist that they had since the beginning. It feel like something they shoehorned into JL to officially cut off ties to BB.
@@NoVideosFound0 I just recently found out about that movie after making this comment, but you are right! If I'm being honest though, I still feel from a narrative perspective that it's a very dissatisfying end to Terry's arc to make him a clone of Bruce. It should be believable enough that Terry and Bruce have endured enough similar suffering that Bruce would feel comfortable trusting Terry to hand off the Batman mantle to him. I just feel like it's an unnecessary and super complicated plot point that doesn't serve the story, much as it's there more to just make Amanda Waller look cool. Batman is like Spider-Man, where I feel like he's been around long enough he's more of a symbol than just the man behind the mask. More than Peter Parker or Bruce Wayne.
@@Narumi4918 Yeah, I completely get that. But don't let the fact that we know about it now discredit the fact that Bruce didn't (fully) know from the beginning, so their bond is still what it was. I do see the appeal of not having Terry be a clone of Bruce, but at this point it is what it is.
I never liked the idea of Terry secretly being Bruce's son. Like, what's the point? Shoehorning predestiny into a superhero's backstory always makes them less interesting, I think. It'd be like if Captain America didn't recieve the super soldier serum for being a good guy and was just born with powers.
This movie was probably one of the best DC animated movie. It show me that Terry can become Batman and take the mantle of the bat. And besides it had mark and Kevin in the best performance.
The fact that Terry could fly made their Spider-man call-out that much more obvious when they had him swing on a line carrying a guy, recreating the cover to Amazing Fantasy #15. (He was clearly created as an amalgam of Spider-man and Batman, and that was just one of many ways the creative team acknowledged it. Those DC animated shows had a lot of Marvel shout-outs in them.)
Alex Williams I don’t think it is. Barbara Gordon was never stated to ever Become the Phantasm. And besides, it was confirmed that the Phantasm was the OG Phantasm in that scene. But the idea makes sense. Andrea Beaumont looks a lot like Barbara Gordon.
This is still the best DC Animated film that was ever made. Also remember being on the battle lines when the controversy about it exploded when we found out the flick was censored. It was probably the first case I can think of where the internet backlashed against something so big and so much and it ended with the studio actually listening.
I loved Batman Beyond so much as a kid. Looks like it holds up pretty well too. Joker-boy scared the hell out of me back then. I would love to see BB in a live-action movie and a proper Arkham game sequel. Let Insomniac make it.

I recommend doing a Caravan Of Garbage for the movie EXPLORERS for the release of IT: CHAPTER II. A terrible Goonies clone from the 80's, even with the power of Ethan Hawke & River Phoenix.
I've been noticing a lot of people recently stating that the "caravan of garbage" title doesn't fit some of these videos that cover legitimate good films/shows. To me I think the title still works because sometimes forgotten things get thrown out that can be good or bad. For instance, I'm sure a lot of you guys have forgotten about this movie, and your brain kinda threw it out. Theres been a lot of coverage of good films tho recently (Blade, Rami trilogy, this) so make a separate title for the ones that aren't bad, like "caravan of things that are pretty alright and not totally garbage". Ok, I'm done, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
I hate the terry clone subplot if they do a live action version I hope they take that out. It takes away the point of terry’s character. Plus Damien exist so there’s no point in making terry his son
E. Segovia same thing tho. My point was i liked that terry was someone unrelated to Bruce. It shows that anybody could be Batman which added to his Character. I think Even b4 Damien and terry they were Bruce Wayne jrs In certain stories.
Technically I think he can't stay invisible forever because it makes the suit overheat. As in the IR radiation from the suit and his body heat is bounced back and trapped inside the cloaked suit until he uncloaks it. Something like that was mentioned in the first episode.
OMG The Joker magically turned Tim Drake into a midget temporarily, what a monster. How else do you explain that he still looks 13 when he's supposed to be at least 20
I still remember the rumors of what would eventually become Batman Beyond and it was just a "Batman in high school" thing and sounded terrible and like some awful really simplistic kiddy show. But then it broadcast and was actually nothing what we feared and was actually plenty awesome and a very worthwhile sequel to BTAS/TNBA. And yes this movie is great. Have to say even the censored version is pretty grim. Joker being electrocuted is still quite a dark thing to see and it's still got the tortured Robin thing which is nightmarish on it's own. But yeah having the young child Robin actually shoot the Joker dead is another level of dark and it works great for these characters. Epilogue was a lovely surprise too when it was broadcast. Strange having the true final episode of a cancelled series actually be produced as one from a later series and gave great closure and is a fantastic episode in it's own right both as a Batman Beyond episode and a Justice League Unlimited episode. Cheers for this. :)
The best thing about this movie is how the "censored" version of the Joker's death is just as, if not more violent than the original cut

Of course you have to introduce limitations to his bat suit, otherwise there’s no difficulty and he can go invisible all the time. Also it defeats the purpose of training and honing your skills when you can do stuf like this
I love how the Batman animated series led to several spin offs in cannon. It’s so awesome to have years of connected continuity for Batman
- "it's a good version of mr freeze"
- shows bad version of mr freeze
Batman beyond was airing when i was a kid and was my first real exposure to batman, and it being such a great show is directly responsible for my love of batman.
9:37 I thought I'd been going mad remembering the show as "Batman of the Future" not "Batman Beyond", but now it all makes sense!
Batman TAS, Beyond, and both JL runs were my childhood. It's what got me into comics and super heroes in general, and why I've always had a slight preference for DC. They're perfect incarnations of the DC characters, WB should take notes for their live action universe.
I like Marvel more overall but these shows were my childhood too.
Don't forget Teen Titans.
And Young Justice.
Mark Hamil and Kevin Conroy, the only Joker and Batman we have ever needed.
At 9:58, the guy that collects Bruce's DNA looks exactly like the red herring from the movie.
Still have the 2-DVD case on the right at 8:57 displayed proudly in my room. Terry McGinnis was MY batman as a 3 year old!
0:32 but Batman beyond and TAS are in the same universe
“The only way to beat a comedian is a heckler”
Yes talk about Batman the Mask of the Phantasm and Batman 1989. They’re the two best Batman movies ever!
Return of the Joker is better and the Nolan movies say hello.
Imagine Andrea Beaumont standing on the bow of that ship at the end of mask of the Phantasm, and then Amanda Waller walks out of the party holding a top secret file in her hand and simply says "Hello, Miss Beaumont. I'd like a few minutes of your time"
6:01
Gotta love it when villains show their biggest weakness.
I now need to see that joker hanging scene animated
Play Batman Beyond return of the joker the video game, for pretty much the opposite experience. :D
Wow had no idea this was coming Maso definitely didn't spoil it in the podcast, what a surprise
There's a touching moment in the main series wherein Terry's little brother wants to do some SF/F way of contacting Warren McGinnis, their Dad, because he is now having trouble remembering things about him. This hits harder when you realize Matt McGinnis must also be Bruce's genetic son, a fact confirmed by Dwayne McDuffie before he left us.
matt becomes robin in current BB comics
I can't even describe how much I still love this movie, series and the original batman animated series. I remember watching it on kids WB when I was really little.
6:41 there was an episode that was pretty much all about the fact Terry relied a little too much on the suit's technology in order to fight, if I recall correctly
R.I.P Kevin Conroy. The best Batman.
fyi this isn't in the caravan of garbage playlist
I just noticed "The Boys from Brazil" vibe of the Batman Beyond program.
What?
For sure, that was totally intentional--we did a video about it a couple weeks ago!
"The only way to beat a comedian is a heckler"
I love this series so much because it's a proper sequel to an already great series. Batwahman on the cw is piss compared to this masterpiece. 10/10 would watch again lol
@@ponquin to highlight how stunning and brave she is
I remember watching this 24/7 as a kid. I used to be OBSESED with Batman.
A batman arkham game based in the beyond universe would be amazing. Terry finds a batcave and a previously thought dead bruce Wayne (spoilers for knight) and teams up and fights Terry's rogues with little hints of the joker throughout the first and second game with the third being the return of the joker.
When are we getting our live action Batman Beyond movie with Michael Keaton as old Bruce Wayne???
The movie is great and that episode of JLU is fucking heartbreaking. When Waller is talking about Batman being with Ace as she dies is a tough watch
Batman beyond is imo one of the best dcau shows. I just love how everything is portrayed is it.
In latín América we also calle it "Batman del futuro" (lit.Batman of the future). The problem with the "beyond" word is it translates as "más allá" Which means "the other side" or Even "afterlife",soooo,ti avoid wrong messages....
I think Batman Beyond’s Scarecrow inspired The Batman’s Riddler
I did some research and this was the first superhero film to have a blue sky beam.
Before watching this episode Watch the movie and the Justice Leauge Unlimited episode: Epilogue. #KeepEpilogueASecret
Looking at what was planned for the canceled movie, it's confirmed that it actually wasn't a last-minute thing!
I love this movie, but the Tim Drake Joker scene still gives me chills......
This movie was probably one of the best DC animated movie. It show me that Terry can become Batman and take the mantle of the bat. And besides it had mark and Kevin in the best performance.
I almost spit out my coffee at “He’s got batman in his balls” 😂😂
4:59 “Do you have any idea how little this narrows it down?”
I think James should do a CoG episode all about Mason and not tell Mason until its time to release!
Ha! Got em!!!
I always thought that was Barbara Gordan under the Mask of the Phantasm in the Batman Beyond Origins.
It was...I'm pretty sure. But the woman who was the original, when old, might have looked the same. But, no. I'd say you're correct
Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Crossroads of Time for SNES. That game's just wild.
I loved Batman Beyond so much as a kid. Looks like it holds up pretty well too. Joker-boy scared the hell out of me back then. I would love to see BB in a live-action movie and a proper Arkham game sequel. Let Insomniac make it.
Awesome series, needs a big screen live action adaptation!
This is still one of my favourite Batman, animated, and general movies ever made since I was 5.
WDYM GARBAGE THIS MOVIES GREAT!!!
At this point I think thats just the name of this show cuz they aint talking much trash
They've been talking about good shows/movies on this series for as long as it has existed, dude.
they've said multiple times that stuff on this show isn't necessarily garbage. Its sometimes garbage but not always.
@FuckYouAllToPieces you can't change the title of their series now its too late. imagine if all shows did that. it'd be chaos.
Maybe, you, should, watch, the, FUCKING,VIDEO
Mask of the Phantasm and Return of the Joker may be the best 2 animated DC movies. Can not wait until Batman Beyond comes out on Blu Ray!
Hey, you really shouldn't steal stuff from smaller RUclipsrs without credit. I love your content, but please, please credit The Watchtower Database for their comparison between the censored and uncut versions.
They've since pinned a top comment crediting them. All is better now.
they normally do credit so it was likely just them forgetting to in this instance.
My favorite parts are the street banter Terry constantly uses
The batman beyond suit is the best batsuit ever. This is the hill I choose to die on
My favorite movie for the first decade of my life was Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. I used to have it on VHS. Now I have it on DVD.
@@AmonsRealm except damian DOESN'T exist in the DCAU. Damien wasn't even a character in the comics at the time of the movie.
I love how The Phantasm was right behind Terry and his family and then just loses passion of the mission! 🤣
Time for you to do the best Batman movie: Mask of the Phantasm
Technically I think he can't stay invisible forever because it makes the suit overheat. As in the IR radiation from the suit and his body heat is bounced back and trapped inside the cloaked suit until he uncloaks it. Something like that was mentioned in the first episode.
OMG The Joker magically turned Tim Drake into a midget temporarily, what a monster. How else do you explain that he still looks 13 when he's supposed to be at least 20
Originally when the movie was created he would have been 13 but retroactively the line was made longer
My Fahter watched this with me.
Good Memories but also im getting old.
I LOVED how Terry handled the Joker in this final fight
