Long ago, and far away (sounds like a song title . . :) ) I was in the Civil Air Patrol. I posted something to Mike's post here on RUclips about this video that I was pretty immature back then, 17 or 18, before going into the U.S. Air Force, and I'm very glad I never got called out on a real SAR. My father was a pilot, CFIIM and he had been teaching me how to fly, but SAR is a deadly serious thing, and getting into the crash sites, or even finding one from the air is really something for people who know what they're doing and are willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.
Would I do it now? Well, if I was medically fit, which I'm really not, yes, I would. But, today, compared to the mid 1970s, at least for airplanes, is usually a lot easier. GPS equipped ELTs going to satellites makes it a lot easier, and faster to find, but it still requires a lot of commitment, determination and effort on everyone involved in the mission.
Cory, I didn't know until I saw this video you were involved, either. To both you and Mike, my deepest respects, and to any other pilot who flies SAR, you have my deepest respects.

Loved the stories! I am a huge Patey fan! Just a personal hang-up that gripes me every time, is when I hear someone say, “Sheriff’s Department!” It is a, “Sheriff’s Office,” an elected office and not a department of any other county government! The Sheriff is not only an elected official, but is the most powerful law enforcement authority in their particular county, able to supersede, if necessary, all other law enforcement agencies, including the feds! Whew!!! Thanks! I feel better. Great show! 👍🏼

Fantastic! Great to see three of my favorites together. Most folks don't understand. Search and Rescue is a labor of love.
I was a reserve fire captain. Happiest times of my life. No pay. I risked it all for my fellow man.
In my agency, I was a senior captain, handled training for two wildland crews, and was assigned to headquarters for 18 months. Took care of 66 fire stations in what, 19 cities?
Dealt with the IAFF, good guys. They wanted the department to move me to full time. I knew the department politics, and just kept on going.
On fires, we did the dirty work. We put the fires to bed, ensuring we didn't have a rekindle. We dealt with the families, the crying children. We found their salvageable clothes and belongings.
This was my payday. What I signed up for.
Worked in ambulance duty for years. Hard times. I understand.
Mike, I salute you. This comes from a man who really understands. Every hour in that 206 costs you real money. Your time is valuable, yet you simply do what needs to be done.
I've spent many hours in the Huey, the 205, we had Super Hueys. In my younger days, I spent some time in the Jet Ranger / 205. I had money then, we had fun chartering those.
I gave all that up for a career in the fire service. For the right reasons. Unpaid.

I've been in CAP since 2018. I've done two SAR sorties and neither were part of CAP haha. Both times the aircraft was found, one had a great result. Thank you to my 5 year old son / mission scanner who actually actively listened to ATC and spotted traffic sometimes before I could. May your adventures be limited to SAREX/TRAEX's (or if an actual mission may the result end well).

My last 2 yrs in the Military was on a S.A.R. flight (Dope on a rope) and the local knowledge was so invaluable in getting positive outcomes. The bad ones are still with me 37 yrs on, it is well worthwhile, even the ladies manning radio's or base infrastructure.... These 2 guys are legend in my book!
