I honestly am not self conscious about that. And honestly considering how blm is praised by our current regime and its seen as praiseworthy whenever mainstream praises you for your colors and shames the white color or a lack of color there of. Your comment makes no sense to me 💁 specially when people get hired based on being black and that being the only measure of a person..... not qualifications and character. That kinda sucks for everyone in that instance. I am jealous tho for the melanin tho. Specially when I work my ass off in the heat. Luckily I do have some from my Cherokee blood. I'm also loving how this lady is not being racially driven. She's being informative and has done her research, I love just seeing someone smart explain one part of who they are without obsessing over a simple absorbition of light. It shouldn't have ever been a big deal . As for the "woke" break , atleast she calling it what it is, but not everyone's horrible tto the baorginies that's white. It's does make sense tho and people should call it what it is. They took over. But people are people and thier color is not an excuse nor should it mark anyone 🙄
I absolutely love how scientific yet down-to-earth this video is. So informative. Still hoping you eventually do that video on hyperpigmentation/melasma!
That WOKE break is everything. I think about how Native Australians get treated by white people there to this very day and it irks my soul. I honestly don't feel bad about their stats too for the same reason.
best things that worked for my hyperpigmentation: 1) more zinc rich foods 2) vitamin c facial serums 3) patience and water and shea butter chile! yaaaasssss
It's interesting, because, with my family, their black indeed did not crack. Of course, all human beings age and show the signs of aging, but truly, melanin is a wonderful preserver, especially when you take care of yourself. Relative to fairer skin, darker skin does indeed age more slowly when well taken care of. Even when we get wrinkles/lines, it looks different to Caucasian lines. It looks like strong, smoother skin... with wrinkles. I know, that doesn't make any sense, but it's the best way I can explain what I've witnessed all my life. I think it's okay to say, and even celebrate, that melanated skin does age beautifully with grace, so that it cracks less as well as much later on in life, especially when well taken care of!
Now Future I think when she says that black does crack she just means it's a metaphor and black people can't use that as an excuse to not look after their skin which some people do. I'm black and my family makes fun of me for wearing sunscreen because "black don't crack"
I agree, we can't use the phrase as an excuse to not care for our skin. Yet and still, melanin is a beautiful and wonderful preserver in and of itself. Everybody needs to care for themselves and adopt a good skin care regimen, however; we also ned to understand the fact that we don't need to precisely follow the standard skin care regimen of fair skinned people - which is what is marketed. The Sun's beautiful rays are not nearly AS damaging to our skin as it is to fair skin; so we don't need to mimic and follow everything they do. African Americans may need sunscreen, but we certainly don't need it at the levels to which fairer skin people need it. Relatively speaking, our skin doesn't have to "crack" if taken care of, and you don't even have to go to extremes in adopting an overly priced, complex skin care regimen. Just properly clean and moisturize our skin with products that are good for our skin; melinated skin. I'm currently on the hunt for the best products, and a great part of my research is done in sifting through African product resources, and researching how our people in the past took care of their skin, and what natural products were used. I take into consideration the adjustments to our physical nature as we have dispersed into other parts of the world, and mixed with other races, however; I understand that the Caucasian focused skin care market that I live under can't service all of my skin care needs. It's a European target market, and even when they do consider melanated skin, it is not the BEST products for melanin skin since the right kind of in-depth research about the nature and needs of our skin is rarely done, if at all. With a healthy skin care regimen that is right for our skin needs, our skin ages so beautifully! It does, that's a fact. Melanin slows down aging for us when taken care of properly. This is where the "black don't crack" phrase comes from. It is indeed based on something that all races have witnessed of the darker complected people, and honest Caucasians will even admit it. Does the phrase literally mean that black people experience ANY lines or signs of again on the face? Of course not. However, with proper care, melanin greatly helps to delay the signs of aging, as well as diminish the intensity of the signs of aging. This is the "black don't crack".
Callimo I stated that so long as we take care of ourselves, normally not exceptionally, our skin aging process is much slower than fare skinned people's skin aging process. Obviously, if your actions and lifestyle counteracts your well being and healthy functioning, such as consuming drugs, alcohol, or cigarette smoking, that can negatively effect your slower skin aging process to hasten it. I'm talking about normal; a basic healthy lifestyle, nothing even exceptional. Melanin IS a preserver: that is a fact. We also have thicker skin that is more resilient than others. African textured hair and melanated skin protects from the Sun's harmful rays; we are naturally designed for a warm climate. Slowly over time, man's destructive ways slowly chips away at nature's normal functuoning, accumulating overtime, so we have to take into consideration such changes that affect man's normal and intended relationship to such things as climate. The health and natural functioning of nature overall has deteriorated over time, and continues, yet and still, melanated skin does indeed age far more slowly than fare skinned people. Even Caucasians will admit this! It's before our very eyes, at the least. I'm just going to put this out here: I think the problem is that some black people consciously and/or subconsciously want so badly to be connected and likened to the Caucasian race that they'd even go as far as wanting to harbor their weaknesses. Just to be associated. They'd dismiss a strength of their own and seek to be associated with a Caucasian weakness. It IS that deep; post traumatic slave disorder is a BEAST that is very much alive, rampant, and can rear its head in the most unusual and utterly shocking ways. To be CLEAR, I am not stating this to be this RUclipsr's issue, I dont know, but it is indeed a sad and silent issue in the black community.
I've just come across this older video. You're awesome!! I'm old enough to be your mother so I keep thinking that your parents must be so proud! Thank you for a fascinating video😚❤

You could've complimented her without insulting black women and yourself like that. The self hate is so real lol. Black women do a lot more than you can imagine. Keep that negativity to yourself without involving us.
Commenting to say I appreciated the woke break - also love that you're out here actually teaching people about the skin and not just shoving products and sponsored brands down our throats.
Melanin is present in the entire body not just only the epidermis of the skin, and you just scratched the surface. Eumelanin is also photovoltaic and a lot of other wonderful things

Hell yeah, it’s rare black person get skin cancer! Girl, I lived in Ghana for a whole year, hot as hell, and my black self from America lathered down in natural Shea butter and coconut oil!! every day !!!! Meanwhile the biggest concern of the villagers who said I was crazy for doing it, was they didn’t want to get any blacker! There was never a mention of skin cancer!! I walked around the village, looking like a golden bronze statue😂😂😂 and loved every minute of it!!
EuMelanin is what's in dark skin. Melanin is a broad term and everyone has melanin whether its eumelanin (dark skin) or pheomelanin (pale skin). They are different and one is a melanoid (not a true melanin). When you say you have melanin, it's like saying a mini-van and a ferrari is the same. EuMelanin pieces at EuMelanin Hue for everyone. Peace
I appreciate the woke moment. I finally got woke and keep trying to explain it to the rest of the family...and they are struggling to understand. Also, I love visiting places close to the equator. They are some of the most beautiful places on earth, but my white ass has to wear a long sleeved swim suit and a big ass hat...on top of my 45 SPF sunscreen...lol. Thanks for the skin education! Now! Off to binge watch your channel.
For mixed people who have a very wide range of skin tones depending on sun exposure, do you recommend that we try to get to our darkest shade (not by "tanning", just from normal daily expose without sunscreen) so that we have maximum melanin protection, or is it better to just wear sunscreen all the time and avoid the sun to avoid getting sun expose even if it means having less melanin protection? Thank you so much for sharing all your amazing knowledge.
Exposure to the sun without sunscreen is a HUGE danger zone! The sun is ultimately the #1 cause of skin aging, so why would you want to increase that? Being dark doesn't necessarily mean, you're more black than someone who is light skin.
lol, I loved how you lay it down. we are kissed by the sun and this is why we tan otherwise we will come from the cave. but don't judge a book by the cover

Hi there. I wanted to point out that if you use sunscreen your skin won't use its' own power to work with the sun. If you use skin lotion your skin won't use its' own power to moisturize the skin.
Hi, Every day I'm using Shea butter as a moisturizer and protection against the sun. I wanted to know if Shea butter was enough to protect me from the uv rays, and aging or if I really needed to buy an SPF that target protection against UV rays AND protects the skin from aging (I'm brown skin)
great video, however, acral lentiginous melanoma is not caused from sun exposure. I believe sunscreen is unhealthy for black people, since lack of vitamin D, due to lack of sun exposure, is the cause of a lot of illnesses and cancers in black people.
it's a humectant (draws water from the environment and into your skin) so it helps in keeping the skin hydrated and is beneficial for all skin types cause we all need moisture. And yes you can use it on the face cause it doesn't clog pores though it's a bit sticky when used on its own.

what are the effects of glycerin? It's in a lot of moistures and in black soap. What skin types would benefit from it? Can you use it on your face?
it's a humectant (draws water from the environment and into your skin) so it helps in keeping the skin hydrated and is beneficial for all skin types cause we all need moisture. And yes you can use it on the face cause it doesn't clog pores though it's a bit sticky when used on its own.
