- Hi Beauts!
Pore vacuums, microneedling tools, dermarollers, at-home dermaplaning, and chemical peels are all products heavily market to skincare lovers as cheap, easy, quick alternatives to professional treatments. But... what are the risks associated with these tools? and are they actually safe? do they work? That's exactly what we're talking about in today's video.
Let me know in the comments if you'd like to see more videos like this!

Words to live by, "If it doesn't feed you, don't water it." - Me
I don't see you as a party-pooper. It's because of videos like this that I stopped doing home chemical peels and dermarolling on myself. I was a DIYer, trying to save a coin here and a coin there but it's just not worth it. People like you (professionals) have education, science and experience behind doing procedures. It's not as easy as it looks and the risk isn't worth the reward. I saw somewhere that someone had contracted a horrible infection on her skin from dermarolling at home. I have a new found respect for professionals. Thank you for sharing.
Tyari,
Well said 🙌🏻🍑Lisa Peaches Skin Care
Perfectly said! ❤️
Well said, same!
🍑Tyari, Linda, Nina🍑🍑🙌🏻Lisa
You can save coin but ever so often you please pamper yourself ( when you can)with a professional treatment, sometimes it seems as if we are only working to pay bills but when you can spend some for the care and keeping of yourself. One love
100% Agree! I see so many DIY treatments gone terribly wrong in my clinic too. Thank you for this awesome video🥰
I love your channel as well 😍
As a fellow esthetician I have seen SO many DIYs go wrong. Our skin is nothing to cheap out on or play with. Please go see licensed professionals please. Thank you for doing this ❤️❤️
What do you think about differin products?
I'm glad I was too lazy to try any of this.
Me too!
im glad my parents were too strict to ever let me try this😂
🤣💀 Yes
I literally was about to buy a eyebrow razor to try dermaplaning. Got me together real quick. Thanks for the tips sis!
Actually thats not bad because ut removes the hair and some dead skin. Its okay to shave your face love and with shaving any part of your body be care. She was stating that professionals use an actual scalpel. the scalpel removes multiple layers and THAT isn't safe for at home use. A scalpel is a tool used for surgery so It definitely makes sense not to use that at home.
I tried it and it worked for the first few weeks, I did it once a week, then one week I broke out SO BAD. It took a month to get my skin somewhere, I’m still recovering
Same!
S B Everyone’s skin is different but if you want to try again, I would recommend only doing it once a month!! I do it to shave my face (not necessarily to dermaplane), and I find that using alcohol to clean my razor, toner before and after, and aloe gel to shave works for me!
They are fine if your intent is only to remove the hair.
This video was hard to watch, I couldn’t imagine doing any of this to my own face. I’d faint lmao, considering some with a professional though 💜
I just found you and you had me at DO NOT DO THESE AT HOME!!!!
I am a holistic master esthetician with over thirty years of practical knowledge with skin and skin products and I’m 54. I don’t do anything invasive to my skin and I don’t even wear foundation or concealer.
I started my channel when I had to close my three holistic skin care salons because of Covid. I have been shocked at what I see on RUclips! People with absolutely NO knowledge of skin or some that do 🤷🏽♀️recommending things that will absolutely damage the skin. The at home micro dermabrasion machines are not micro dermabrasion. What we do in our skin care salons is professional and not filing the skin. We have seen terrible damage from at home micro derm, micro needling, and derma planning ! I can NOT believe the people doing and recommending micro needling. I could go on and on!
I loved this and I loved you spoke up!!! SUBSCRIBED! 🍑Lisa Peaches Skin Care
I agree the micro needling concerns me. I had nowhere near the amount of experience you do, but correct me if I'm wrong- won't the micro needling be counter productive to creating youthful skin and just cause tiny scars and make the skin rough and hardened?
@@JennsCorner777
Yes! Many of the doctors and holistic practitioners I work with feel it actually breaks down collagen and therefore allows major issues with the skin including the skin ( the largest organ of the body) to get skin cancer easier. I have been reading a lot of published studies that are just coming out. I think people think their skin looks firmer and more plump when in actuality it’s swollen and traumatized. 🍑Lisa Peaches Skin Care
@@PeachesSkinCare GIRL! FINALLY AN ANSWER to my burning question that I have had since those darn things started popping up online. I was like that is not a good idea. I just keep thinking about how peoples skin would be hardened like that of a Rosacea nose. Do you have a website? I'm headed over to your channel right now.
Growing up in Jamaica, I saw people around me "bleaching" their skin. A class mate suffered severe burns after her relative forced her to bleach. Since then I have a healthy respect for chemicals and I am horrified when I see people using them at home. That being said, thanks for posting this video because I didn't know how bad derma-rolling was (it is pushed so heavily) I actually considered it then I found out it was needles, no thank you lol. Keep educating us, there is so much misinformation and tricky marketing in these streets.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾
I saw another RUclips aesthetician promoting these things and unsubscribed because it just didn’t seem safe and kind of like she was shilling for the companies. Plus it seemed really complicated and I was flabbergasted that she would try to explain this to lay people and people actually listened. I’m glad you confirmed my initial thoughts!
can you drop the name?
lmao "lay people" you must go to church :)
Jee Jean I don’t want to blow up anyone’s spot but if you search for any of these devices, you WILL see a pattern from this and maybe a few other people, they talk about them often!
If u see an esthetician promoting it run 🏃♀️ lol
i stopped “dermaplaning” with an eyebrow razor because i would break out so badly afterwards and would cut my cheeks sometimes, thank you for bringing all of this to the light!
Yess thank you! Loved the banana example. Esthetician’s and dermatologist are pricey because they are experts of their craft 😍
Alarming. I’m petrified of doing any of these in a clinical setting let alone in my bathroom. 🧼🛀🏻🚽
I wanted to note this for everyone in the comments- If you have questions about your skin please see a local Esthetician who can tell you what's up with your skin and how to take care of it properly. Maybe it'll have to wait until the Spas are back open but it is so important vs just guessing.
This video is why I subbed. Thank you for your expertise. I can't handle these crazy videos people put online. When I did skincare as an Esthetician no one knew what that was back in 2007/2008. I would have to explain it to everyone, nowadays EVERYONE and their mom thinks they are one ughh. I miss the spa and getting facials and massages during Covid. Microdermabrasion and deep peels always scared me to perform and have performed on me thankfully I didn't really have to do that. I had one job that told me I needed to get a light peel as part of job to know the product. Ridiculous 🙄 what if I was contraindicated? The spa owner had no skincare experience at all, now they're out of business so there ya go there's that. Love this channel keep spreading the word.
Jenn's Corner they don’t even care if their information is credible, they just do it for views and likes. Same for all these hair videos. People at home making all these magic potions.
@@poetz153 BWAHAHAHA magic potions that made me laugh so hard. You're 1000 % right!
YES! I love that you took time to do this video! I cringe at the things people do to their skin and how often I see these 'popular' bloggers encouraging over exfoliation and unsafe practices. Like you said its their skin but they shouldn't film it for others to follow.
Misha,
I had to comment 🙌🏻
I’m new to youtube and I am shocked at what I see some of these channels doing. It’s unbelievable. I have been a holistic master esthetician for over thirty years and I would never recommend most of the things I see. I’m so happy to see others see that as well. 🍑Lisa Peaches Skin Care
I was an Esthetician not anymore however during my time Michelle Phan was recommending people use kitty litter on their face and I just couldn't handle it lol. Professional skin care should be left to the professionals.
@@JennsCorner777
Kitty litter?
Dear lord 🍑Lisa Peaches Skin Care
@@PeachesSkinCare Snooki has been a second person talking about using kitty litter. I don't know if she recommends it but she uses it on herself.
Peaches Skin Care. Agreed!!! So light exfoliating products(Ordinary, etc.) are ok?
Thank you for speaking up about at-home microneedling and dermarolling. It's also becoming very popular in the hair loss community for men to microneedle their scalps. I don't think people really take the time to consider the risk of infection from these treatments and how serious it can be.
I did do a glycolic peel at home but I was really careful and although I had no issues I will not do that again. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Wow...I wasn't interested in doing any of these but now..I'm so good with my little cleanse tone moisturize routine! Thank you for sharing this
I was literally planning to try dermarolling...my skin is already damaged...u saved further damage...Thank you so muchhh😍
I got micro-needling done and man or man I looked a HOT MESS for almost two weeks but my skin looked beautiful afterwards. It was done by a Physician Assistant. I would never try this on myself at home. I’d be a damned fool to
I haven't seen other youtubers make content about professional treatments before, this is really helpful!
Not a party pooper at all. Its refreshing to hear safe and researched based information. 😊
Yesss!!!
I love her!!! She speaks the truth. Not like other youtubers putting out content everyday, Ni actually takes the time to give us real meaningful information. Thank you
In a desperate attempt to battle my hyperpigmentation, I've actually tried all of these things at home over the years. Luckily, all of them were too weak to do any real damage to my skin. The only thing I got out of it was an empty wallet. Should've just gone to an aesthetician.
I like how you really pointed out the difference of actual dermaplaning vs shaving your face!! So many people think its the same thing and as you stated, its not!!
Lord!! Some of these pictures were terrifying. You made an excellent point. I'm so glad I watched this.
The real important thing is where is the hair from!!!!
The hair is from HairRUs in LA & on IG
Thank you. It is gorgeous, your makeup too
Right!?
Great information on what not to do. I think often some of this stuff is tempting and people think its okay since its being sold or advertised to us.
Yes!!! Thanks for putting out a video like this. I talk to people about this through my work each day, having people walk in with skin that has been destroyed by home treatments 😔 it's so Dangerous how you can buy all of these tools and products online without being educated in the area..
Please please please please...do a video on clearing up dark spots from break outs. Please breakdown what acne means on certain part of your face. Do a video for treating teen acne. Love you and thanks in advance
Dr Alexis Stephens has a lot of videos on these topics :)
Thank you for this! I was just informed of the Vampire facial (microneedling) and have been doing a lot of research. I spoke to a friend about it and she said..lol.. she can do that at home with the microneedle roller😳. I left that alone. 🙅🏾♀️
Oh no please send her this video asap!!!!
I'm so glad you talked about this! I've come across the channel Natural Kaos where this youtuber does treatmeants that are meant to be done by professionals on herself. As you said, she has a right to do it, but looking at the comments there are so many people following her footsteps or wanting to do so. I hadn't seen anyone talking about it.
This is where videos like this come in. Doing DIY procedures like the ones in your video isn't illegal, but so many aren't aware of the risks. It was because of a video like yours that I was dissuaded from doing a chemical peel on myself.
It would be great if you kept the conversation going. Thanks so much!
Omg this is crazy. I just bought a Personal Microdermabrasion tool (PMD) and I haven’t used it yet. I’m gonna return it. This was very educational; thank you 🙏🏽
I have one and like it 😩
I love you! I love how you are not smiling at all cause none of this is a joke! I get people want to save money or can’t afford these services but it’s not worth it long term
I admire how level headed and informative you are when presenting excellent information. Please continue because you feed me.
I really love the bruised banana example when comparing dermarolling to microneedling!
I don't see you as a party pooper at all. At the end of the day, these procedures are going viral and can be very dangerous. There is a reason why professionals like yourself go through training to be able to perform these procedures. If everyone could do it, then we'd all be professionals. I am always here for a good DIY to save some coins, but a few saved coins here and there is not worth the health of my skin. When it comes to any type of invasive (or even minor invasive) treatment I always look to professionals because they know what they're doing. There are so many people I know personally that have absolutely destroyed their skin after doing some of these at-home-treatments. Thank you for this!
I can agree with your sentiments except for dermarolling. I've been dermarolling at home for 9 years and it has been my saving grace against hyperpigmentation. There are better techniques but different strokes for different folks. I would just say that people be careful with what they use and work in small portions. Doing anything in life comes with risks. It's no different from telling a person not to drive a car for fear of getting into an accident.
True, but with driving a car, you are taught the proper way to drive, made to take written and physical tests and many other procedures.
A lot of people just buy stuff and follow the RUclips tutorial that's basically an overview without doing the adequate research, training and practice. Especially impressionable young people, I think that's what she's trying to warn against.
And even if you do adequate research, it may be harder to do these things on yourself. It could go wrong really easily is the thing.
Yeah I dont mess around with my skin. I spend 300 on professionally done chemical peels about 3-4x a year. I hate that it is pricey but it's better to have it done right.
I would love to see you comment on facial steamers! I specifically have one from PUR and want to know if I should ever use it again.
This is why I still love you and your channel .. thank you ❤️
I do use a scalpel for dermaplaning but you’ve got to have a steady hand, correct angle and patience. My face looks much younger and definitely exfoliated.
I haven't seen my esthetician in about 6 months. I miss her. She helps me keep my acne in check.
Thank you for this! If I won't put my internal health in the hands of someone who is not a health care professional, then why should I put my skin in the hands of an "unlicensed beauty guru". There are educational paths and training for a reason. If anyone can just buy a bunch of stuff and use it on themselves unsupervised and get actual results, then there wouldn't be a need for esthetician training or cosmetology training. I am taking myself to a professional from now on.
I really love that you have a passion for skincare. I learned at the age of 16 that marketers will target their demographic, take their monies and sell products are either too harsh for the consumer or ineffective. I was 16(with a part time job) and I used to support a brand called Mary Kay, the representative from Mary Kay sold me a skincare line( cleanser, toner, moisturizer and foundation) however the toner caused my 16 yr old skin to peel (it was too harsh and I told her she still tried to force this product on me)and the foundation was a waste of my money because my skin was as beautiful as yours I didn't need it. After awhile I got wise because this representative only saw me as a way to the next tier of the pyramid. I stopped using the line as it was too harsh for a 16 yr old skin and I found another brand. Needless to say over time I have found an awesome esthetician who has been taking care of my skin almost 15 yrs, sometimes we have to let professionals take care of us, we can maintain the care by what we do at home but not the treatments. I agree with you.
what da hell???? the girl doing LIP INJECTIONS at home at 0:31
That's insane 🙆🏽♀️😦
I *always* thought derma rolling didn't make sense. the fact that youre trying to make punctures perpendicular to the skin, but its a ROLLER was so counter intuitive; even if it's minor, the needles are going to be moving around in the wound. thats why I always thought derma-pens or whatever they're called make more sense. pretty frustrating, because I've heard multiple other esthis claim that derma rolling at home is great, when I, a totally uneducated consumer with no formal education, recognized that dermarolling cannot create clean puncture wounds purely by thinking about the physical action of the device. thanks for being the first esthi to bring this up and let me know that im not crazy. you should film a video on at home tools that actually work and are not dangerous if used correctly (also, curious if you think the at home pens are not as bad as the rollers)!
So i work as an admin in spa studio and the amount of ppl that we have come in to correct at home beauty/skin treatments gone wrong is a lot. Had someone who tried to do lash extensions on themselves permanently damaged her natural lashes and I’ve had ppl call and attempt to purchase professional spa products and tools from us to try and do the treatments on their own at home 🤦🏾♀️
its funny to watch that girl doing the micro-needling on herself, bleeding everywhere, like its normal! im glad people called her out because she was getting quite a following on snapchat
laurble people see the blood and assume “it’s a needle treatment! Of course you’re supposed to bleed like crazy!”
trying to help sis out with the algorithm because she deserves it. I have nothing to say. LOL everyone stay safe and be kind
So sad closing all the tabs I have open with different brand microderm machines lol that's why I came here first!
* removed microdermabrasion tool from my amazon cart * thank you for saving me $80 !!! 🥰
Thank you so much for your honesty and sincerity about skincare.
I appreciate you sharing this. I myself have done the VI peel and have done microneedling at home and have had great results, but I have also been dabbling in this world for 7 years (I did my first peel then). I have been in numerous med spas, threw away the derma roller after one use, and I have made mistakes that I have learned from. I am all about at home treatments but only with experience, care, and guidance from these med spa visits or other professionals. Some treatments are idiot proof in my opinion, but most are not. It is important to be prudent and investigate them.
Thank You for your honesty, wisdom and advice. Knowledge is power. You look beautiful keep up the good work!
I'm glad I don't do any of these skin procedures. I love that you share your professional knowledge.💙👩🏾⚕️🙋🏾♀️🤗
I wish more professional would give out free advice! Thank you!!
Thank you! You are not a party pooper, you saved one more person in doing further research on what chemical beauty products to put on one's face or stick to the safe basics :)
I always think of what her quote at the end means. Can someone clarify for me, thank you❤️
“If it does not feed you, do not water it”
I believe she's admonishing all of us to invest our time in activities/people that nourish us and make us feel whole.
Theodora L that makes so much sense, thank you 🙏😊
I ain't curious no mo. Thank you!
🤣🤣 you good ehh
not a party pooper at all!! sis give us more videos like this we need to be educated! so many people show how to do skincare and not really teach us about what’s good and bad for our skin. more videos like this would be great, especially a video on retina and retinols!
My heart dropped when you warned us to not do chemical peels at home. So I would like to know your opinion on using The Ordinary’s AHA BHA peel. Before I even bought the product, I read countless articles on the ingredients, and made sure that this was something that was right for me. I’ve been using it for a couple months now and it has completely revolutionized my skin. My skin has never looked better. I only use it once a week, and sometimes just every other week. I would like to keep using it, but I would love if you could give advice on how to use it at home.
Thank God for a sane voice amongst all the crazy stuff going on on RUclips! These people who are untrained and some who ,worse, are actually professional beauticians advising people to go out and buy tools that they are incapable of using safely. More please,! ☆☆☆☆☆0
I did an at home chemical peel before. Never again. I had chemical burns and it took months to fix.
Tried an at home 10% salicylic acid and got frosting in one spot real bad, 10 years later and it's still there looking like a raised birth mark/mole. It was my attempt to try help with pitted acne scars. I had considered derma roller but after this experience and my fear of needles, pain and blood kept me from getting it. I also know I'm not gentle with tools. Seeing this video was very informative on the differences between a professional and at-home product.
So glad I discovered you. Your advice is great and appreciated. Ty and keep the videos coming.
This video came just in time, because I too was considering getting some tools to help with some small issues that don’t seem to go away. Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks for this! Please eventually do a video about high frequency facials. I’m fascinated by the idea, but I don’t want to accidentally perform ECT on myself! 😂🤣
UR SKIN IS FABULOUS OMG
Sending this to my miss sister! I could not risk my face to at-home treatments!
Thank you for your Skincare Public Service Announcements (SPSAs)! You are saving someone from doing something reckless. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
This is the reason I dont try any trending $%^& cause lately people are getting outta control with DIYs ... thanks for the tips!
Party popper? No! Life saver? Yes!
I can't believe people are really doing these DIYs😥💔
Thank you for the Video Nay🤗
Thank you so much for this video. I am shocked at the dangerous of at home diy beauty things. I will be more careful about what I choose to put and do with my face
My skin hurts just listening to these bad decisions.
You give very sound advice because sometimes, common sense just isn't so COMMON! I wonder WHY anyone would do some of the things you've shown in the absence of professionals but clearly, this IS occurring because you're sharing the examples of this.
As a professional, it only makes sense (to me anyways) that you would want to get the word out there just how dangerous some of these "treatments" are in the hands of a novice & it was only responsible for you to do so.
As always, thank you for all the professional advice you provide! Some of these examples truly amazed me in a very horrific way 😬😬😬😬😬😬
It’s easy ! Do your research beforehand! Don’t try something stupid at home 🏡! Stay safe 💜
The last bit is soooooo cuteeeee
Sis knows her stuff. Love it
Just wow, I couldn't even watch the inserts. It's not like I wanted to do these treatments, but I was curious about the procedures themselves. I went to a spa for the first time ever, and I got a dermaplane from a professional, loved it, but that's as far as me and my sensitive skin are going. I might even consider waxing 😅🤷🏾♀️
This hair style is so cute on you!
I see people hopping on these trends all the time and doing it because everybody else is doing it. Like I would never try to attempt or even think I could do that. I did not get any training for that or anything. And you are right. A lot of brands do just care about your money now your stuck with these horrible skin fails on somebody's meme.
Hi Nai! I saw you talked about The Ordinary in one of your videos and I really enjoyed it. There's a brand somewhat similar to them called Good Molecules and I was wondering what your thoughts and opinions on that brand are! I'm specifically curious about them because they have a product called the "Pineapple Exfoliating Powder" that I've been eyeing, and this brand is the first time I've heard of something like that
Good question! So light exfoliating products(Ordinary, etc.) are ok?
InDes 10 yes. Certain exfoliating products and acid serums are fine.
Esthetics teacher got so mad at me when I was in school for mentioning derma roller 😂
She's always here to snatch people up
I’ve tried everything for my skin I’m not wasting anymore money I need professional help ASAP
I tried to do the “at home dermaplaining” yeah my skin was very irritated with me
Thank you for providing honest information about these DIY skincare treatments! Too many people watch RUclips videos and end up destroying their skin!!! Go to a professional esthetician!!!
I just wanted to thank you for one of your videos on how to properly cleanse your face using products. I hum the theme song to Fresh Prince everytime lol. Keep up the good work!
Her reacting to these home videos is like my mom reacting to my grades tbh
I love your videos!! You're so informative. I peeped that ending loll
Much needed I formation. Thanks for being responsible ❤️
Yay!!! You're back 💕💕
I did the micro needling at home. It was the best thing I ever did improve my skin so much. do your education and try it at home keyword education
My dermaroller helps my skin care absorb so much better and work quicker. I have also used my dermaroller for 2 years and have removed telangiomas and avoided laser from it. I don’t do long strokes and I sanitize, change the heads often and have never had a problem but I don’t draw blood. I’m not an idiot. My dermatologist knows I use it and the darn thing cost me $300. That chemical peel is not good. I can even tell things went bad. That’s a straight up burn.
Can you do a video on steaming at home, the dos and don'ts and the best steamers to buy.
We NEED more vids sis! 😩
Almost bought a dermaroller. Wow .
Thank you for educating.... ill just go to the spa! 🧖🏽♀️🧖🏽♀️🧖🏽♀️ you look amazing btw
This woman is so beautiful like godamn
Love you so glad your on RUclips now yay! 🎊🎉💖
Thank you for this. Could you give you opinion on the Led wands? Are these safe for us to do ourselves? There are lots of led therapy masks available. Also would chemical peel include the ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution?
Jada Walton agreed, I have an led red light pad, used it for a few weeks and developed a few moles on my face that were not there before. Wondering if skins of color should stay away from these. I also have the ordinary “red” peel, used it a few times and it was okay but don’t know if we should use it.
@@tinaf.7941 OMG! That's wild. I bought one, hoping to use it a few days a week to help with a few acne scars. Now i'm nervous. Good point about deeper skin tones and lights. I'll do some research. Thank you!
Jada Walton hopefully Nia will provide some guidance in these areas!👍🏽
