Hi Matti, a fun camera is one where you don't have to think about where all the Dials are and fumbling. It should feel like second nature, and it has to feel good in your hands and have good grip as well as not being to heavy. It's fun to look after your camera, to clean it and the Sensor. And have pride in your camera, and to also look forward to your next shoot. Photography is fun that's for sure. Thanks Matti this video was FUN 😂🤣

I am no expert on the Z6 III and video but from a friend who does video for a living, he said the Z6III being able to record 6k raw straight from the camera without a device such as Atomos with 3D LUT that's a lot of value jam packed into one camera and putting Nikon to being a great competitor against some other companies that are well known for video such as Sony and Panasonic. Even the FX30 and S5II need a device externally to record raw and Z6 III can do it internally without a cooling fan like the GH7. Instead of renting multiple red cinema cameras to shoot different angles and B roll, now crews can rent one red as the main, and multiple Z6 III for other angles. That's a lot of money saved for videographers. At least that's how I understand it.
And so after learning about this, I put the Z6 III more as a video camera that can also do photography. It's more a competitor to the likes of the FX30 and GH7 video wise. If you want better resolution for photo, then why not get the Z7 II? If you want faster fps, why not the Z8/Z9? If you want a hybrid that does well on every aspect, then the Z8/Z9 also excels they can shoot 8k while the Z6III only 6k. The Z8/Z9 are do it all cameras similar to the Sony A9 series and A1. In the end, really depends on what you want.
But as a photographer myself, I would be perfectly happy with the Z5.

Having done assignments for a newspaper and been without film in the camera I know the feeling! As just a stills photographer, I find that being forced to buy technology that I don’t need or want is frustrating. And now that AI is being marketed without any constraints, we’ll probably soon get post processing in the same box. But tooling for a dedicated application wouldn’t be very profitable i guess, so it all gets crammed into one expensive bundle for market share.

Camera manufacturers are currently where Microsoft Office was 10 or even 20 years ago. They do everything 99.999% of people need but they feel they have to keep on adding more and more features.
Neglecting the lower end and entry level camera market is something that will bite them in the long term when the number of existing "camera people" starts dropping.

That's a good thought! The smartphone market has shaken up the camera world and it is reacting by fleeing into high-end photo devices. It is very likely that mass-produced cameras will become more similar to smartphones: Bigger displays, smaller sensors, better connectivity, smarter and lighter, phone-compatible. My pixel peeping race ended at 12 Mp with a 1 inch sensor. Who needs more? - I suspect that Panasonic will be the first to bring this "hybrid camera" to the market.

How much are SD cards nowadays? Although a UHS-II card could be pricy, a UHS-I card is pretty cheap. I have tons of SD cards. I always leave at least one card in every camera body (as some camera bodies have dual slots). After each photoshoot, I usually transfer the photos directly to the computer. Then I clear the data and put the card back in the camera body. So I will never forget 😛

I agree to a point. But a camera with a more sensitive sensor, or one with IBIS will allow you to be more creative. I started in photography with a 35 mm Pentax Spotmatic. There were basically two settings: shutter speed and aperture (and film speed, if you changed the film). I don't think I use half the features on my DSLR or micro four-thirds cameras. However, I appreciate a camera which will give me greater focusing accuracy, or faster frame rates to shoot sports. But, I've found myself in the same situation as you - stumped when the camera appeared to be malfuntioning - in my case inadvertently moving the focus switch on the lens from auto to manual. I don't do much video. So i'd like a hybrid with excellent still photo features, and just some basic video.

    • @mattisulanto

@@mattisulanto I get that. But there is a difference between "allowing" you to be more creative, and "forcing" you to be more creative. The most basic camera will force you to adapt, but a pin hole camera will never allow you to capture the images you can with a DSLR or modern mirrorless.

For old-timers, the best fun camera is one you can control aperature and exposure-speed, combined with auto-ISO. For newer generations, it’s the iPhone-experience. Auto-everything. Maybe some options such as clear or unclear background. They’ve all seen advertisements and want to replicate some of these pictures. Maybe some Fuji-like presets, color and B/W style. Jpegs they can export instantly to their friends. Functional apps will be crucial. Those today are hopeless. This is the future.

That's why I always activate the "don't take a photo without an SD card" option. This way, before leaving, I always take a test photo, and if it shows "no card," I'll quickly find one
I am equipped with Lumix and Nikon (formerly a Canon user). I have the S1R, S5II, S9, Z8, Z6, and Zfc. My best camera is the Z8, but honestly, it’s a bit too boring
because (speaking in geeky technical terms) it’s almost impossible to mess up a photo in terms of exposure and focus. But I still love it; it produces my best images. However, among the Lumix cameras, I much prefer using the S1R (to stay at the hybrid DSLR level). I adore the Z6, even though the Z8 outshines it
. I was surprised to enjoy using the S9 so much, considering I criticized it a lot. Its lack of a viewfinder doesn’t bother me much, but I would have preferred the screen to be like the one on the Z8/Z6 and not on the side like the S5II. But since it’s a vlogger’s camera, it makes sense that the screen is on a swivel.
All this to say, I love using all my cameras. Even though I have the best lenses from Nikon (50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, and 135mm Plena) and Panasonic (50mm S Pro 1.4, 24-70mm, and 70-200mm 2.8 S Pro), I find myself using my Panasonic S9 with the 45mm f2.8 Sigma or the Nikon Zfc with the 27mm 1.7 much more. The problem with the Zfc is the lack of stabilization; I can’t take photos below 1/50 without shaking
    .
I was thinking of selling my Z6 and other cameras to get the Z6III, but I’m stopping this arms race
and will focus on what’s essential: photography.

Generally I'm happy to leave it on auto but I never use auto ISO or program mode as ISO and aperture are things I like to choose myself. Everyone has a different combination of settings they like to choose and those they leave to the camera.

Hi Matti - for recreational photography I agree with all that you say. Obviously for my pro use cases the Z5 is vastly inferior to the new Z6III or any Expeed 7 Nikon currently out and this makes a tremendous difference in the field.
Speaking of Expeed 7 and fun however, you should definitely try the Zf. It is the most 'fun' I have had in photography since my Nikon FE2 - I think you just might love it and it also as an added bonus is lightyears better than the Z5 at this point. There may be a Z5II soon (hopefully as it is needed in the lineup), but I doubt that it will be as 'fun' as the Zf - just make sure you get the Neewer grip for the Zf - it is as good as the small rig but also has the classic red line (ala the Niokon F3) down the front and looks stunning on the Zf.

Yes, you are right, a modern digital camera without a memory card can only be compared to the film era, when people forgot to insert film into the camera.
Technical specifications, camera complications are nothing if a person simply does not understand and does not know how to use these functions.
All these innovations that are built into new cameras are a marketing ploy to attract buyers and nothing more.
This does not bring a fundamental and significant leap in the quality of photography, all the same, the hands and the photographer's view of the world around him remain a priority and fundamental.
You can shoot with cameras from ten years ago, in manual mode and still get excellent quality pictures.

I couldn't do that with my Z6 II or Z50. And I don't have to think about it. Just point the Z6 III at the subject and it locks on. With the majority of my photos being keepers, it brings a smile to my face.
Btw, it is not a good idea for you to be carrying your camera around like that, pointing the lens into the sun! Several Nikon owners have reported that the plastic frame around the camera's sensor melted by doing that. If I am walking around and not shooting, I keep a lens cap on my lens. I think example Nikon D3500 was and still is, awesome beginner camera. There was inbuilt tutorial and manual. Great automatic settings. It still had great potential to let photographer grow with you, but did good job even if you just wanted to use it as almost point and shoot. Dont know if Nikon still have those tutorials installed on their entry level cameras? It was great and working idea. I still time to time use those old D3000 and D3500 cameras what i have on my shelf and they deliver most of the times.

All of my cameras that I am likely to use have memory cards en every slot. My idea is that I want to be able to go away for a few days with any one of them and to not have to worry about full memory cards.
I no longer take them out, I transfer images to computer by plugging the camera into my computer. I get instant access to all its cards, and so for any additional cameras I plug in. When done, I delete all the photos transferred.

still having a lot of fun with old film cameras and repairing them. 1900's falling plate cameras, box cameras all the way to 3D printed 4x5's from the "Will Travel" series. I like the mistakes and random errors in either the development, picture taking or quirks of the camera itself. Experimenting with custom optics for unique results is fun but always with a goal in mind be that film or digital and perhaps that's part of the problem? Its rare to just go out and shoot something without a care in the world to location, camera or what the photographic knowledge will bias the result towards. A single still from a 50's 8mm movie camera may bring more fun (art?) than multi-megapixels from a triple layer Foveon sensor but having the choice to use such a wide variety of tools is also part of the fun. p.s stick a note on the front door "Memory card?"

I am able to have 'fun' with any of my cameras. I was impressed with the Z6III and 'wanted' one for a short-time, but decided that my A7IV truly is the superior camera for my needs. The Z6III out specs it in video, but my video needs are pretty pedestrian. My sub $50 USD Nikon D50 is probably one of the most fun cameras that I have. I think it's the size and perhaps the mindset that I have when I use it that that makes it so much fun. However, the most fun I have in photography is the creative outlet it affords me. Truly thankful that that I'm not a working pro. Not sure that would be too much fun...??

Good video. I try to curtail my desire for new camera gear and concentrate on improving my skills with the old, but still very capable stuff I have. I'm quite happy with my Sony a6000 & a7II. By the way, I'm genuinely curious as to why people remove memory cards from their cameras. When I bought each of my current camera bodies in 2016 and 2020, I inserted an SD card and have never removed either of them. When I have completed a photo shoot, I do a "send to computer", which connects to my local area network in my house and uploads to Sony PlayMemories on my PC. I have never had any reason to remove my SD cards so it would be impossible for me to ever be without an SD card in my camera. What do people do that requires them to take the memory card out of the camera?

❤ I really love this video. My most fun camera is my PEN PM-2 when I use the 8-25 Pro lens on it. It's, so fun. It's handy despite the pro lens, and the pro lens makes people smile at my little red thing behind the lens. I have more and more fun using my OM-1 too, after being better att mastering the functions.
I think the Sigma CEO is right about to complicated and expensive cameras. I want OM System to make the small PM cameras again. And also a simple very light weight version of the E-M10, (OM-50?), All new cameras should have easy fun menu systems. Maybe voice-supported or something like that, and maybe menusystem based on pictures to click on for the type of photos i would take. I believe the E-M10 has an embryo of that in the AP mode or so, but lets develop it into much more fun. MFT world is perfect for small fun affordable cameras. Why not a Ricoh GR competitor from one of the MFT brands? Why don't Sigma make a camera like they preach?
It has to be able to find a market for ordinary people that likesvto take photos in family life or in travel life.

Also, thank you for this video. At first, I thought maybe it was click-bait attack on the Z6iii given the title and all this news chatter BUT this is the message that we as photographers need to remind ourselves (myself an avid hobbyist since I was 12 - developer by day). While I push this exact message - the joy of photography - when I debate people who pixel pop, the acto f defending a camera often blinds you to the fact that it only adds to the fire. Most of these youtubers want that because the algorithm rewards it - interactions... Far too often the Tony Northrup's and Jared Polin's of the world stir everyone up into this frenzy over the "ultimate camera" in terms of pixels/DR/EVF/AF. As I told one such youtuber once - there are award winning photographs taken with disposable Kodak film cameras. What matters is the photograph and what it communicates.
That said, I myself upgraded to the Z6iii from a Z6 only because I photography action a lot these days (my kids ;) ). Before I had them, I was less concerned with AF as I was mostly into landscape, portrait, candid, and street photography but with 2 little ones AF is critical and the Z6 let me down vs my old tried and true D750. I finally feel I can put the D750 away. Not forever, but for day-to-day family photography as I still shoot with my Canon F1 from time to time.

And the sensor have less dynamic range than the former model. Up until now image quality from new camera sensors have improved, but now with this Nikon and fx the Sony A9III we see a loss in image quality, I do not think that the need for speed or video are that demanding, most photographers prefer excellent image quality more than very fast speed or all kind of video functions (that most do not need).

The most smartphone users, who want more picture quality, upgrade to a better smartphone. Some of them upgrade to a Gopro or dji. Some of the richer ones, upgrade to a chic digital camera as a "haute coteur" accessory (Leica, Retro Style Cameras,...) From the billions of smartphone photographers, a very little percentage really thinks, they have more fun with a "really" big digital camera. The most have enough with smartphones with Zeiss, Leica, Hasselblad Collaboration and LUTs, computational photography, Gimmicks full of AI for example in Google phones, and so on. Old-school photography is dead like (mass) painting at the end of the 19th century, afters the success of photography. Only in the niche of art, hobby and as a job, lives photography with dedicated cameras forever, but at a very low level.

If you care to watch the full video you'll notice that I'm not talking about the Z6III specifically. I'm only using it as an example of a camera that is full of the latest features. It's typical to watch a fraction of a video and then leave a hasty comment. I'm not saying you did not watch the full video, of course, just making a general observation. It's also typical for fanboys to only hear what they want to hear.
