    This is one song of Rammstein that is pretty obvious. It's a criticism on xenophobia and the politicians that abuse that fear of people. Till is simultaneously playing a madman and a politician holding a speech; the red wires carry the propaganda to the screens. The people get so scared that they build walls and isolate themselves, but ultimately their fear turns towards each other. They chose very American themes in their video, with Till also almost certainly portraying a specific politician, but the song is more general. They also refer to the refugee crisis in Europe. In both cases, politicians are spreading and abusing fear for foreigners. That's why the color comes back when the television is destroyed. Without propaganda the world isn't so black and white.

      It's mostly about the media portraying everything in a way that is supposed to scare you. The politician is just as bound by their bullshit because a politician is nothing but a human from our society. That's why everyone is wired to the screen, and the politician is put in a straight jacket.
      Another thing is the 'black and white'' theme. In the end Till bashes the shit out of a television (media) and color returns. Color is nuance. The screen portrays everything as a black and white issue, which is just straight up lies.
      Edit: Oh yea, "Der Schwarze Mann" in German usually describes something akin to the boogie man, but it obviously also means 'black man' so it's another play on words.

    The song has so many layers and symbolism. For example the color red represents violence / death across many of their music videos, for example in "Adieu" and "Deutschland". You don't see any other color than black, white and red which are the national colors of Germany during its darker times. in the end you do see another color: light brown pants that remind of the uniforms of Hitler's SA ("Sturmabteilung") troops that bullied the population. Because of that the color brown represents right-wing radicalism in Germany to this day apart from other political colors like red for socialist parties for example.
    The media tend to spread negative news because these sell better than positive ones. That drives fear - although the world today is much safer than lets say 50 years ago.
    "Who is afraid of the black man" is a run & catch game for children. But in contrast to children adults dont run away of what they fear. they build walls and buy guns instead.
    The figure of the "black man" has nothing to do with colored people. It dates back to the days of the plague in central Europe, the "Black Death": infected people's skin turns black due to this decease. so people told their children to keep away from "black people". the children's game right before starting the run goes:
    catcher: who is afraid of the black man?
    crowd: nobody!
    catcher: but what if he arrives?
    crowd: then we run away.
    (all the caught kids become catchers for the next round.)
    So an ironic conclusion could be: in contrast to adults the children 1. are not afraid and 2. they act responsibly.

    Thanks for listening to and watching another Rammstein piece. My explanation or interpretation of the song and video is as follows.
    The two phrases that are repeated multiple times throughout the song "Alle haben Angst vorm schwarzen Mann." and "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" mean "Everyone is afraid of the Boogeyman." and "Who is afraid of the Boogeyman?" "Boogeyman" is the translation/the English version of "schwarzer Mann" in that context. It is an evil entity that's been used to scare kids who don't behave. The phrase "Who is afraid of the Boogeyman?" is also part of a kids game that's similar to playing tag. The literal translation of "schwarzer Mann" is "black man" but it's originally not about skin color or race. Schwarz (black) refers to something dark and sinister. But it could have a double meaning so that "Boogeyman" and "black man" are the same, meaning people are afraid of different/foreign countries, cultures and peoples.
    I think in the video the Boogeyman is the media and politicians themselves or he is a creation of them. They use whatever is topical and form it into a Boogeyman for the people. Media (TV, computer) is creating and spreading the fear and the politicians/government (cheerleaders) fuel that fear and are cheering it on while seemingly providing the solution or cure against the fear. Providing the putative safety. They're giving isolation (bricks), violence/protection (guns) and surveillance (cameras) to the people and are selling it as "safety". In the end the people are consumed and controlled by their fear which turns them against each other and eventually destroys them.
    And the figures playing the instruments might represent lobbyism. They're wired and the wires go from their mouths over their heads back to the speaker's desk and stretcher where the crazed man is. The figures (lobbyists) are telling the crazed man (politician) what to say which is then broadcasted by the media into people's minds via TV/computer.
    At the end Till (the lead singer) is destroying the TV, breaking free of the influence of the media and politicians. As you mentioned the color returns which I think stands for calmness and bliss that return to their lives. That scene could also refer to the saying "ignorance is bliss", because they don't want to see people of other countries (the mother and her child) suffering therefore he is destroying the TV.
    If you're interested in more Rammstein I'd recommend some ballads like "Frühling in Paris" (Spring in Paris), "Roter Sand" (Red Sand), "Nebel" (Fog), "Wo bist du" (Where are you), "Diamant" (Diamond) and "Stirb nicht vor mir" (Don't die before I do). Might be good to alter between softer songs and harsher ones which I could also recommend a bunch of but the list is just to long.^^ Most of their songs should be available with English subtitles.

    • @VictorDraculesti
      @VictorDraculesti Год назад +1

      Two points i would also put to more attention. First the colors Angst (anxiety) is white text at the beginning. The colors coming from the musicians changes between white and red. Even after destroying the tv the only colors that come back is white and red. The second point is what they are eating at the end. It was once called Negerkuss (Niggerkiss) in German and is renamed now.

    • @PillWool
      @PillWool Год назад

      @@VictorDraculesti Good eye. I didn't really notice the color thing. At least not consciously.
      But „Negerkuss“ is not equal to „Nigger kiss“ though. „Neger“ is not a slur. It's a neutral, objective term that originates in Latin (niger/nigra/nigrum meaning black, dark). Only the spelling with double 'g' and maybe an 'a' at the end turns it into a derogatory term. Political correctness wants us to believe otherwise.

    The line "Who's afraid of the Black Man?" comes from a children's game from the German-speaking world. Here, the Black Man symbolizes a plague-stricken person who infects everyone he touches.
    In this game, a group of children must cross the playing field and in doing so, they must not be touched by the child chosen to be the Black Man.
    There was a discussion a few years ago about whether the name of the game was racist and the game should be renamed.
    I can imagine that Till wanted to show this connection as well.

    • @jbird4478
      @jbird4478 Год назад +2

      It's probably a deliberate double meaning. The chocolate candy they're eating at the end also has this connotation. In German they were called "Negroküsse", which literally translates to "negro's kisses". It brought upon the same discussion a few years back, and now they're called Chokoküsse (chocolate kisses). Other European languages had similar names for them, and the same discussion.

    hallo Brandy - viele Grüsse aus Deutschland, sehe Deinen Kanal wirklich sehr gern - danke für Deine Rammstein-Reaktionen, bitte mehr davon !!! Aber hier nun meine Interpretation des Liedes, wie ich es empfinde - Analogies in this Rammstein song are:
    "Fear of the black man" = German children's song = racism in white Europe from the 14th century
    Circle symbol on the lectern = property boundaries of the members of the band = NS symbolism = sun wheel = swastika
    LAN cables glow red = brainwashing = purchased media = mass hypnosis
    Barbed wire around woman with child = strategy of the rulers: "divide and rule" = neocolonialism = geopolitics = racial discrimination
    recurring colored clothing (black-brown/red-white) = uniform of the Hitler party "NSDAP" with red swastika armband

    • @drsnova7313
      @drsnova7313 Год назад +2

      "Fear of the black man" is not "14th century racism". It did not refer to skin color - simply to some sinister, dark entity, or death, or a literal man dressed in black, and later, a chimney sweep. That is the point - it only gains the double meaning as referring to skin color and fear of it thanks to how the song is worded, but in itself it's perfectly harmless, a children's game.

    Hello
    the video is fantastic. It describes the power and manipulation of people, their brains, by the media and society. Neighbors that were once friendly become enemies, enemies who kill each other with evil. You wall in your good feelings and positive thoughts, you become lonely and lonely. Evil is the bound Till and the Cheerlyders are his accomplices to command a foreign controlled crowd.
    The dance performed by the Cheerlyders is a Haka. The New Zealand rugby players, for example, do this just before the start on the pitch to impress their opponents and instill fear in them.
    In the end, Till smashes the medium of TV, which manipulates us through the powerful of the times. This gives reason to hope for a better world without prejudice and discrimination. One's own life regains, represented by the color that is visible again.
    It is a video against prejudice and manipulation by media and governments. The implementation is virtual, a real masterpiece thanks to the musical intensity and Till's charismatic vocality.
    Let's look forward to more inspirational songs and movies from Rammstein. What do you think?

  • @nickriviera3351
    @nickriviera3351 Год назад +6

    Nice reaction again. 😀
    How I see their video:
    The media and politicians paint the World black and white, but it is colorful. The Red is the color of danger/a threat, that is shown going from the microphone the crazy leader (Till in a straitjacket) into the TVs of the people, who are sucked into the wrong depiction of the World on the TV. The Red is also visible in Till's eyes (Feuer), and right before the end of the song (not the video) when he's out of the straitjacket, the entire screen is Red as he screams. The fearmongering of the politicians with the help of their cheerleaders and by TV leads to the open/welcoming society to build walls, to weaponize the people, to watch eachother, because the threat is not coming from the outside anymore, but they see their neighbors as the enemies, and they're eating the shit they get served by the media. And in the end switch off, go outside, enjoy the beautiful colorful world.

    Many comments pointed out that "black man" would be better translated to boogey man. Despite that is kind of true, I rather guess that Rammstein had more an old German game in mind "Wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann? (who is afraid of the black man). In that game ususally on side tries to reach the other side without getting caught but before it starts the other side answers the question with "No one".
    In the video is everyone afraid of that "black man" what could stand for terrible things. But Rammstein also loves to play with words. So every confusion is probably well intented.

    The question of migration is not coming up without some difficult and demanding aspects. However... this song reminds us, not to let rule Angst at the end regardless of all possible problems when trying to get along with each other. Particularly the reference to people from abroad seeking asylum is obvious here. And the devastating influence of media making people more and more incompetent to act as social beeings. So as per my interpretation this is an impressive call for humanity and against xenophobia.

    Many thanks for your reaction. In German "Schwarzer Mann" can mean the bogeyman or literally a black male. In this song "schwarzer Mann" is a symbol for the millions of refugees who came to Germany since 2015. People from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and later more and more from Africa. Germany faces a deep economic crisis and together with Covid and the war in the Ukrain and inflation and the energy crisis many people are afraid and full of Angst. There are a lot of great Rammstein songs, every one is different and unique and just beautiful music. I think you had "Adieu", "Zeit" and "Angst" now and I would recommend "Du hast" (live Paris), "Rammlied" (live Madison Square Garden), "Mutter" (live Paris), "Mein Herz brennt Piano version" (official video), "Ich will" (live Hurricane Festival 2016), "Puppe" (live Gelsenkirchen), "Klavier" (live Berlin), "Ohne dich" (official video), "Wollt Ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen" (live Paris), "Du riechst so gut" (live Hellfest 2016), "Deutschland" (official video). @Assmodean Год назад

      Tbh, the overarching theme here for me as a German is fear of the "other" built up by people or political ideologies through media manipulation and what it leads to and can turn normal people into. For example, the words "black man" seem very deliberately chosen, as taken the exact words from the children's game about the boogeyman and using them in a different context that paints it as a fear of actual black people. Let's not forget the whole video is framed by people symbolizing refugees watching on their phones how the other people in the video behave, too. So in a way, both sides are also a boogeyman "others" to each other but their only connection is through the screens. When Till smashes the TV at the end, color comes back into the picture. So (for me) the band wants to say that we should stop getting our experience with others only through screens and media to get rid of our, here literal, black and white world.
      What I don't quite get is what they want to say with the sweets. Their name was quite old fashioned, using a term (negro) that is hardly ever used in a non-insulting context anymore, and has been changed. So there is another connection but I am not quite sure what it symbolizes.

    The computer-generated translation is really crap. Here's what he's really saying:
    FEAR
    When children behave badly
    Father threatens them
    The bogeyman/black man (the double meaning is definitely intentional) will come and get you
    If you don’t do as I say
    And we still believe this
    The country and people are so afraid
    That something terrible is going to happen
    Evil is coming and will never leave again
    And the fear grows through the night
    Doors and gates are guarded
    Backs sweaty, hands clammy
    Everyone is afraid of the bogeyman/black man
    He creeps up to you in the dark
    If you aren’t well-behaved, he will grab you
    So don’t trust any strangers
    So many nightmares, so much madness
    And we still believe that
    The mob (literally pack of dogs) is heavily armed
    Yeah, they just can’t help themselves
    Shout “Fire!” in the streets
    And the fear grows through the night
    Doors and gates are guarded
    Backs sweaty, hands clammy
    Everyone is afraid of the bogeyman/black man
    Who’s afraid of the bogeyman/black man
    Who’s afraid of the bogeyman/black man
