  • In September it will be the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the Iranian Revolutionary guard for allegedly not wearing the hijab properly.
    Last year the movement for "Women, Life, Freedom" exploded onto the streets of Iran, and beyond, but in the country it was met with breath-taking brutality.
    More than 500 were blinded deliberately, thousands more arrested. But women are still defying the morality police, despite a renewed crackdown involving mass surveillance, risking violence and incarceration.
    The BBC cannot operate in Iran. The internet too, is restricted, and for many its a crime to talk to Western media, but Newsnight's Emir Nader, and producer Ali Hamedani talked to people inside the country to give us this virtual tour of Iran after the Women, Life, Freedom protests.

    As someone who grew up in a Muslim family, while not everyone may be the same, I’ve heard the most hateful and vile things come from family members. Religion has become nothing more than a tool to make excuses for the hate and discrimination they preach.

    As an American, Jewish, woman, my heart is with all of the women (and men)who are fighting this battle. Country, ethnicity, religion, gender; these things don’t matter when it comes to human rights. I support a woman’s right to wear a hijab or not. I don’t pretend to understand everything about Islam, but it doesn’t matter because I do understand the idea of religious freedom and have nothing but respect. To me, decisions about faith are so personal and sacred; forcing any religious ideals on anyone dilutes the intentions of the message. My cousin-in-law is Iranian (now an American citizen) and I have colleagues who were born there. We are all connected by our humanity. In the spirit of love, I am sending prayers to the women of Iran. You are amazing, beautiful, powerful, and worthy of respect, regardless of what you choose to put on your body.

      In some sects, but not most. My point is; wear it, don’t wear it. It’s a personal choice and I respect the right of a woman to celebrate her faith with whatever clothing or head covering she wishes.

    My partner is Iranian with a lot of of her family living there. Recently, just a few weeks ago, her cousin was arrested by morality police for proposing to his fiancé in public. Arrested. For proposing. Mind you, the proposal was literally just that - no kiss, no getting down on one knee or any other theatrics, just the words which were overheard by a "policeman". Goes without saying but there's much worse than that. That place is wild.
    I hear about this kind of stuff literally everyday, and the worst part is a good portion of the population supports the regime.

I sometimes feel hopeless about our revolution, but i believe One day we'll be victorious and Iran will become a democratic country and everyone can feel free.     Having lived in the uk and growing up in an orthodox muslim family. then taking off the hijab and finally leaving the religion. It makes me so proud of these women, because i know how hard it mustve been for them to do it. I had it hard living in western country by the muslim community here, but i can't imagine living with the morality police always on the attack.

    As a lesbian Iranian woman, this video shows a little of the injustice that affects women and men. What about work? Women don't find many jobs, there are no art magazines, the low salary, the high rents, the very high cost of school, the killing of gays,Or marriage to a minor Or rape cases put him in prison and many other things that I cannot talk about.

      I am totally against the restriction but the fact that other west government like France have banned head scarf is also similar to what Iranian govt is doing ..People should be free to practise and dress however they like..I am not Muslim , to be honest I think Islam is most regressive religion but that doesn't mean they can't wear what they want.     I live in Indonesia which has the largest population of Muslims in the world. And yet, women are not forced to wear the hijab here. Yes, it must be worn when entering the mosque or for praying but not mandatory on the streets and in public. It needs to be the individual woman's choice, not a form of control. Women have the right to be free without consequences. All the power to you. 💪🏼

    My Iranian friends, if you are looking for ways to educate those among you who are still brainwashed by this regime or if you wish to inspire the men, women and children who wish for change, I would suggest several pieces of Western movies which showcase the signs of a dystopian
    dictatorship and the ways you can combat it.
    For example, the Hunger Games movies are stunning examples of a brave strong woman leading a revolution against the authoritarian dictatorship which have oppressed the people for decades. It’s fitting for the situation in Iran.     I am a hijabi by choice, my mom never wore hijab. No one and no man has the right to tell a women how to dress, whether she chooses to wear hijab or not. If a woman chooses not to wear hijab, she has every right to do so. I feel absolutely appalled and I just don't understand why these people are so obsessed with women.
    3:33 I just can't help but say this- why did the man himself had moustache and trim his beard instead of having the sunnah beard? Simply disgusting and I am sure he has psychological issues. He does not represent Islam in any means.
    Edit: After seeing some of the comments I thought I should say this. Hijab is not just a headscarf. Maintaining pardah/decency of clothes is a farj Ibadat, for both men and women- accordingly, and is clearly stated. That's the reason I chose to wear it, because I believe, and I believe my creator knows better than I do. That's why, even if people around opposes, I want to maintain my pardah no matter what. And I happily wear this even under scorching sun, it gives me peace in a certain way a non believer will never understand.
    And that's the reason I support the liberty to choice clothing. If a woman doesn't want to wear hijab, who are we to judge a person Allah created? Or force her to do anything against her will. Hijab is not just a piece of fabric around your head, if you can believe, you will wear it. Violence is not needed, because if a woman wear hijab fearing the government, she will get zero reward and the ibadah will not be accepted anyways. Islam doesn't support this sort of actions. Please read the meaning of the Quran to understand better.
    Rather, we can encourage our daughters to wear hijab, teach them the true teachings and show them the beauty of Islam so that they don't turn into non practicing Muslims/ non believers. And if they don't, consider it as an examination of Allah, keep praying for Allah's mercy and pray so Allah shows your children the right path. Even some Prophets like Nuh had to face this sort of examination.
    As a woman, I don't want my government to tell me I can't wear hijab. Similarly I don't support the government that forces women to wear it. Countries every where must recognize this, and the countries banning hijab must also recognize women's right to choose. This whole thing about forcing women to wear clothes in a certain way angers me.
    May Allah make this duniya easy for all of us.

      In the 80s in the UK, at the time of Imam Khomeini’s LEADERSHIP! …Naked women were plastered all over the pages of the tabloid press! Men would stare at breasts whilst eating their cornflakes at the family breakfast table!! Not heard of the SUN PAGE 3! To me that’s DISGUSTING! In Iran, women didn’t have to deal with MEN, calling women ‘ TOTTY’, ‘ BINT’, ‘FIT’..etc… Women weren’t described as having ‘ nice jugs’!…Do you get me! It was 80s Britain that was backwards! Not Iran! I mean , I remember in the 80s, huge glass fights in pubs at the weekend! Tonnes of police on the streets at the weekends in towns and cities! People vomiting in the streets, urinating in letter boxes !!! Oh yes, VERY CIVILISED …I think not!

Specific verses, such as this verse, were revealed in regards to particular situations. This sûrah came at a time when the pagans of Arabia (and their allies) repeatedly violated treaties they had signed with the Prophet (ﷺ). Muslims had to fight for the survival of their newly established state in Medina. So this verse discusses dealing with those who violated their agreements and attacked the Muslims. Offenders were fought, unless they stopped their aggression. If they chose not to accept Islam, they were obligated to pay Jizya-tax.

    The State and religion should be strictly separated. Everywhere, in every country. Religion is one’s personal faith and choice. That should never be imposed upon people. Politics and religion are two completely different matters and should never be mixed.
    I salute the courage of the Iranian women who are brave enough to defy the imposition of compulsory hijab. It’s a matter of one’s own choices.

      As the Islamic countries have surpassed other countries in terms of wealth, they have also assumed the moral highground. Religion has become the stick to beat the hell out of women and the teachings have been enforced oppressively. Physical punishments have been in place for those who stray from the straight and narrow path.

They want to show their hair, their body and their beauty which only objectifies them and reduces their value to nothing. By supporting this movement women can be treated like dirt rather than for their true value. A woman's beauty is not for just any man to look at and sexualise, but the modern Iranian women do not understand this.

    Yesterday the Israeli Ambassador to the UN was detained for leaving the Iranian president’s speech at the UN, after he protested against the murder of Iranian women by the Iranian Government.
    The comments are disgustingly overwhelming in support of Iran, many calling the Iranian President a “great leader”.
    If the West doesn’t get serious about this, then Iranian women will end up the way we (the US) left Afghanistanian women.
    The world has become a dark, sick place.

    This is something we are seeing much more of around the globe. Such hatred of women stems from fear. Why do we tolerate such hostility against women. The women who harass other women for being free are so brainwashed. Men who harass women have no respect or regard for their own mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives. Those men are weak. A real man stands up for the rights of others so everyone can live their best lives. What amazing things women can do and are doing. Why should we fear that? The only "good" thing about this is that it shows us how we should be treating each other: with respect and dignity.
