Yooo I've been struggling with trying to sketch easily cuz my perfectionist mind doesnt let me live with a rough sketch being messy so this is defo gonna help! Thank you teach!!
Perfectionism is the the mind killer. Here's a tip that helped me out. Get a light blue pencil (I use Pilot Color Eno with soft blue lead) and rough it in and then the final with a regular pencil (I use 2B). For the rough use simple shapes to block it in. It's easier to get the proportions and angles right at this stage. Another technique is to use a cheap ball-point Bic pen. It will force you to think before you commit a line. You can combine this with a light blue pencil and finish the drawing with a pen.
If I had money I would one hundred percent take your class! I’m never late to your videos. You’re one of the better art teachers on RUclips keep it up bro!

It’s our wonderful mage Frieren! And such pretty line work. My fav part of drawing lines has to be suggesting details. Those little lines make all the difference in my work. Thanks so much for the wonderful tips!
Maybe some tutorial on how to not overuse the soft brush? I'm really struggling with catching the form in my digital paintings and I'm sure it would also help many other people improve their art. Form is one of the most important things in digital art and yet I don't see any tutorial about it in your channel.
I just want to say, thank you from the bottom of my heart, please don't stop making awesome tutorial like this, it's super good, and we as your fans would definitely be sad when your gone for sure.
I'm glad to stumble across this tutorial! Always been "chicken scratching" and struggling to understand why my lineart is way off compare to the sketch. Thank you so much Marc!
thank you for teaching the importance of line weight! now i just got to figure out the best pen sensitivity so i can easily do thick and thin lines as a light digital drawer, that's been plaguing me for years😅
My drawing isn't the best right now. Still have tons of practice to do. But I never understood why my line art - well looked bad even if I happened to make a graceful line. I never realized how important the differences of pencils/ brushes made. Thank you so much for sharing these tips. I'm definitely going to start applying this to my line art ASAP. ❤
One of your best recent vids I think. A lot of this stuff I thought about before but there are so many different line art techniques, having an experienced artist explaining specifically what choices they make and why helps a lot.
It makes sense. I don't think I'm bad at lineart, but I definitely lack of confidence in that area. I mean, I end up redrawing the same like as if I made a mistake, even when I didn't even see the result yet. I'll try to apply these advices, I really hope I can improve in this!
I have just bought my first drawing tablet. I’m super excited and also scared. I want to get into digital drawing but I have not drawn in years so been watching loads of your videos to start learning again. Thank you so much for the information you’ve provided.
Regarding the first piece of advice I want to add one thing, many times there are those who have wrist tablets (like the wacoms intuos and others) in those cases to have a more confident line, you can try to zoom out of the drawing and have it take up the entire screen, You will still continue using your wrist but this way you can cover more distance
Ah, chicken scratches, after one year into drawing, they are still my favorite line type. :D Amazing content as always. As a beginner, lineart is even more harder then redrawing fully colored portraits from references.
Well marc you are the one youtuber whom has taught me the most about drawing and digital art epecially anatomy lessons in your course were just amazing. thanks alot ☺
I can never not watch what Marc has to say 🎉🎉🎉😢I'm addicted 😭 now to make you and myself proud I just have to take your advice and do the work so your knowledge doesn't go to waste in my lifetime. Thank you for your hardwork and passion for ART!!!❤❤❤
Thank you Marc, I struggle with line quality not because I don't get it, it's because of the way others explain it, and the examples that are used don't deliver the message that well. This video and your other videos on line quality are my reference because I actually understand what you are teaching, and your examples deliver the message. That intro was clever and funny, it's like big brother Marc talking with little brother Marc about getting hia practice reps in to get good.
One thing I struggle with is the relationship between canvas size/ brush size. I sometimes see people use smaller canvas and retain good lines, but then i use a bigger canvas and still get blurry lines. Maybe you can make a class about that? Idk if that makes sense..
I think a good way to determine line thickness is to view your canvas at its full size and a distance it would been seen (video thumbnail size vs wallpaper size). And then seeing if your lines are visible enough. Are you able to see and understand it at a quick glance. Basically, how important is your lines relative to the rest of your art work determines the thickness.
Dpi doesn't apply just to printing. Dpi defines the pixel density, which traduce to detail. 1 in square at 72 dpi contains exactly 72 pixels, that means that if your brush is 5px thick, you don't have much room to play with. So increasing your pixel density gives you more space to work with your brushes. Remember pixels are both a distance measure and a resolution measure at the same time, Thad why its so confusing. Try using a generous size like tabloid at 300 dpi, and you will feel the difference immediately. I personally use a 4000 x 4000 pxl size at 300 dpi to work pretty much everything as a starting point.
This has finally made me understand what was wrong with my lineart. This video explained to me in a simple way why I should use lineweight and how much it enhances the final result. Good stuff, Marc!
Your lineart is so crispy, I await the MB Colouring Book....anyway, thanks for another great video, I'm going to up the resolution and draw big strokes on my display tablet next time!

Wooooooooooo! Marc is spittin some goodness!!! Thank you so much. I really struggle with this one as I really don't like doing line art as a result. I will do these tips! 😊
So I just kinda figured this out from a video from I think was art senpai and it made a huge difference for me in terms of line confidence and that was knowing what my brush strokes were going to be before I made them. He described that most lines are either a S shape C Shape Or I shape, and that they can be found in a lot of different drawings. So I gave it a go and it made a huge difference. I was able to say oh Ok I want a... OH! a C shape here! and this little part should probably be a Oh a I shape because its long and straight! Just knowing where it was going I felt made the biggest difference! I'd love to hear your take on the technique!
I got the brush pack just now and I love your pencil brush, I'm using it instead of my usual for the next piece I do. its very similar but there is better feel to it

When I first got my drawing tablet, all I did for months was exercises. Focusing on shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers. Building each individually and then started combining them. I would work on drawing circles for hours, until my arm felt like it was going to fall off. Because I wanted the reps, I wanted to build the muscle memory and control. It paid off. I can pretty much always draw clean lines now, even if I haven't drawn for a while. I spend a little bit warming up with circles, straight lines, tracing a line (Straight or curvy and wobbly).. basically just recalibrating, and then I do pretty okay. These skills are very valuable. I just feel like I *suck* at construction. I also kind of hate doing it.. which probably means I need to do it until I don't hate it and am comfortable/good with it.
I have one inking pen and it's a 0.7 size. That's one of the reasons I find it much harder to suggest line weight. But I think it's something I can learn to train myself to do
