The number one single tip that is true to almost all things you do in life is NEVER GIVE UP! You will try and try and try again on something, but eventually it will come out the way you want it to. Just don't ever give up on something you seriously want to learn!
so true!! just keep going and never give up if its something you really want
I think you mean "Never gonna give you up, never gonna..."
@@-TerraPixl-No, that is third perspective, we are talking about subjected perspective.
at 2:13 I love how you say "circles are soft and safe, like kirby" and then kirby's there in the background kicking ass and breathing fire.
Ah yes, truly the friendliest and most bubbly of characters to show, transmogrifying hellspawn who commits mass atrocities. Maybe I should think more about my examples before I give them...
your animation skills are immaculate 🤯 that folding airplane was so cool and so was the construction text my god 10/10
Thank you so muchh! I wanna put more effort into these videos but it just means they take a while to come out so I probably have to find a balance between animation time and animation quality :p Glad you enjoyed!
Woah he's right
You really did a good job
As far as artistry goes, combining your knowledge of pixel art with editing so well is truly impressive. This is a very visually compelling video
waow, thank you so much for the nice words!! I feel like the visual style of my videos just kinda evolved along with my own art style, so I kinda grew them both simultaneously 😄 I'm glad you like them together!
this is beyond professional, even the art and editing, i learnt a good amount of information!
Thanks!
10:24 I think I now know why I ended up giving up on digital art school. We were constantly told what to draw and make, with pretty tight deadlines throughout, and it very rarely was something I personally wanted to create.
To be fair, there were also classes that allowed for more freedom in our creations, but definitely not all of them and I just couldn't keep up. There was a constant rush to get the next assignment done, making a specific thing, while I'd much rather use the skills I learned in class to make something else.
But well, I guess that's school for ya. I'm just glad youtube is here to help me as I make the things I actually want to create.
ty for sharing your story, thaat's rly interesting to hear! It is a big shame that often when art is institutionalised, the workflow becomes much more rigid or strict. It's a fine balance between productivity for fast learning, and forcing creativity which never works out well. I hope you've found your own footing with art and are making things you really want to make 😊
I quit CS for a long time for exactly the same reasons. The classroom didn't encourage me to expand my knowledge base and effectively realize my ambitions. Instead, it turned me off to them. The rigidity, formalities and toxic personalities imposed (for money how strange) left me stupified.
@@Mochibeans Nice presentation.
I'm barely a minute in and I'm already in love with this video. Thank you so much for bringing up the whole "talent" thing. As a non-pixel artist, I hear nonsense about "talent" all the time and it just ignores all the work that artists put into their craft and discourages people from trying their hand at it. I also appreciate the tips and tricks format, since I'm coming from a more experienced place in regards to basic artistic practices and am mostly struggling with the pixel part. My art style is very smooth, with a lot of crisp angles, which just isn't possible in an appealing way with pixel art, so it's a whole other beast. Thank you so much for the insight and the video!
yeah one thing I've really enjoyed hearing from people is how some tips I put here translate to loads of other mediums, such as 3D modelling or digital art, so it's always interesting seeing someone's perspective coming from a different art medium. I'm glad you liked the video!
@@Mochibeans What's the app you're using for the pixel art?
This is a visually beautiful and really great introduction to pixel art. Thanks for rocking this video so hard!
Thanks! I'm glad that the effort paid off
You speak so quietly, yet play music so loud that I need subtitles in order to understand what you're saying. Buuttt... Other than that great vid lots of very good tips. :D
Thanks for the feedback! I've heard that from lots of people haha, next time I'll fix the balance for sure :>
This channel is underrated. Both great tips and the way you give them!

When the world needed him most...
man, this video making thing sure is hard
He(?) came. :)
FAQ:
🎨 What program do I/ should you use?
In this video, you can see me using the pixel art engine built into Gamemaker, which just goes to show you can use any program as long as you're comfortable with it!! If I were to recommend one, I've moved over to aseprite, which is a pixel art-specialised software, but honestly to start out, anything you're already comfortable with works well. Photoshop, MSpaint even, gimp etc.
!!!
I use mspaint already this works hah
Affinity guys, affinity
What is the app you use for it
Been relying on AI for my assets, and now I'm ready to learn Pixel Art, and your video is the first one that caught my attention. ^^ Thanks for all the great tips!
no worries!! wish you the best with arty endeavours 😁
Thank you immensely! As a solo developer, I've been facing quite the challenge when it comes to art and music. I have a bit of art background but it is still a headache for me while creating animations and shading. Your videos have proven to be an invaluable resource, and I can't thank you enough TT
I'm so glad! I rly wish you all the best and when you release a game let me knoww!! I'd love to check it out :)
Also I do use a lot of reference materials when I'm trying to come up with a new character design. I like to go back to my roots which for me means looking at the things I enjoyed quite a bit when I was a child. And then after which I consider the concepts that I'm going for and then I break that concept down into small separate parts that I can assign a real-life object to that is generally my reference. The character or the objects that I got when my arches finished is what she got a few words combined all of those elements together into one thing. I'm not sure if I'm explaining that quite right but if you look at the animals from the Avatar Airbender series for example you can clearly breaks down the animals into separate parts Concepts thing the different animals that they're derived from and when you combine those together that's the end result. I find this way of creating art to be incredibly fun
That's a really nice place to pull reference from! Especially since you'll be passionate about those things you've seen as a child
Number one tip on making videos, leave things on screen long enough so you can see what the person is talking about or long enough for people to read the text. Number two tip, turn up the gain on the mic, or boost the vocal audio or turn the music down or off.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll keep it in mind. I'm definitely aware that I move a little bit fast haha, hopefully my more recent stuff improves on that!
I really appreciate guided like this even as some one who whole not new, but is still relatively inexperienced (~200 hours) is really useful to refresh stuff I might have forgotten
I'm glad you liked it! It was mainly designed for beginners, but hearing it help other people too had made my day haha
Presentation and animation is awesome as everyone already mentions. But the narration is the thing I noticed first. No hard words and consistent pace.. Really keeps your attention. Love It ❤
tysm! I'm super happy that this type of presentation appeals to people :)
Yes! We love an accessible video 💖
One thing I like to do if I'm having trouble recalling how light should interact with an object is I just going to a dark room and take a lamp isn't super bright and playset relatively close yet still pretty far from the objects that I am studying. This helps me see how Shadows are cast and a light reflects off of objects
yes seeing real objects in real space is really the most clarity you're going to get when it comes to ligjting
I feel like the most helpful part of this video was the continous reminder that you don't need to be talented but just steadily learn. Motivated me to keep going. The rest I've seen in almost any other tutorial already, but overall great and compact overview of everything you need to know :)
What an amazing and beautiful video. I loved the visuals and the quick explanations. Thank you so much for this.
Aaa it's so cool that people like this, thank you so much!
I love the shading tips and i think that they would help me once i try them!! i really struggle with shading so this really helps!! tysm
No problem! Glad you like it :D

Wow this was actually a really amazing video, I've been doing pixelart mostly for games for the last 5 years and although I knew most of these techniques already - you explained them in a really engaging and thorough way in a short period of time.
Thank youu! It was a lot of fun to make and seeing how much it has blown up has made me super happy :)
Wow! This is awesome, fantastic animations, the effort you put into this was insane!
Thankss! I spent so long on those I'm glad you like them TvT
Personally I find pixel art far more difficult than normal 2d art but I need to learn it for my games so thank you for this video man you’re saving my life
Haha I'm glad you enjoyed it ! It's nice that these videos are reaching more people, because it means loads more people are improving at and trying pixel art, which is so cool! ♡♡
Just started learning Gamemaker a few days ago. I'm glad I stumbled onto this channel. A lot of valuable info here. I can also clearly tell how much passion you have for your craft. It's nice to learn from someone who truly loves what they teach! Hope to see more videos if/when you can find the time
Glad it's helped you! I do really enjoy making videos, but just ran out of steam a bit. I'm for sure continuing soon :)
Back when I was in college, I had one Professor who said and I quote, "Art is 99% work and 1% inspiration. BULLSHIT. It's 100% work!"
Rings true 100% of the time.
🤣🤣🤣 I agree with that definitely, but the best part is the work is like at least 50% of the time a lot of fun 😄
Absolutely awesome video. Just 1 min 19 sec in but i cant stop thinking about the layout of the video and the editing comvined with the animations. Good work dude, keep it up!
Thank you! I've always loved watching videos where you can tell the creator really put effort into the presentation and visual explanations so really wanted to replicate it. I'm glad you liked it so much :)
Really enjoyed how easy it is to follow along with what you're saying! Appreciate sharing the knowledge \m/
thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
You're a very talented artist, your instructions are coherent while still densely informative, and your editing is solid and evocative of a 'game theory' video. Great job, you've earned yourself a subscription!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed 😊
I personally think that when first starting pixel art, it's better to go with simple object with mono colors such as apple, but for more geometrically object, it's better to use bigger canvas like 96x96, too big like 160x160 would be challenging for beginner or too small like 32x32, so personally I'd say, find the canvas where you'll feel comfortable then go bigger or smaller depending on where you wanna focus on
Forms I'm struggling a lot on color😂😂 it's just either gonna work or turns weird
I 100% agree with the fact that all beginners should just try to find what feels most comfortable at first, especially with such an important factor like scale. The thing thats trickier to pin point is really where that zone is 🤣🤣 For example some people have come from digital art backgrounds so may find it easier to go from a large canvas and downsize. Alternatively some novices might find there's less to worry about with small canvases and hone their control that way. To be honest there's not one set method and that's just how it is with creative skills 👌
and yeah colour is one of those really tricky ideas to find. I once read a book by Ed Catmull and there was a section where he was saying how learning to draw isn't really about drawing, but about learning to see. I think this point really holds up for colour because your brain has this mental model of what colour the world is, but if you really went and colour picked the things you perceived, they wouldn't at all match up with your perception of them in most cases. Take a body of water, we might draw it blue because that's our subconscious model of what water is, but go and actually colour pick and observe, then you find a mix of blacks, yellows, greens and orange. That's why colour theory is so hard but the more you try it the more you begin to see colours as they are and less as you believe them to be!
This is "chef kiss" absolutely gorgeous, you sir are very underrated and I would love to see you more!
Thank you!! Absolutely there shall be more :D ask and you may receive (when I find time to improve my own pixel art skills haha)
the only video that told me exactly what i needed to hear. thank you.
glad you found it helpful :)
very wonderful and helpful tutorial! thank you!
No worries, thanks for watching!
Judging by your voice, you're quite young, so I want to praise the professionalism and the effort put into this video. This was very well done, explained and illustrated. Great Job!!!
thank you for the nice words!I am indeed not that old, and I kinda see that as a benefit because it means I can pour time and effort into stuff I love without having to worry about like, living and money haha. Glad you liked the video!
This was great! Subscribed! Holy cow there’s so much to this
Thank you! This vid was one of my longest in production time so I was a lil sad when initially it didn't do too great but now it's blowing up! I'm glad you like it :)
Yay!!! Mochii is back!

Thank you so much, this helped a lot and it's a great start for learning the basics!
♡ glad you enjoyed!
Nice, interesting video! I'm not a visual artist myself, but I really like pixel art, it has such a unique charm to it that you don't see often aside from video games. Love the aesthetic. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly.
Thank you so much for the nice words! It means a lot ♡♡♡ I love how pixel art has its own, niche corner of the internet and I'm glad I could share it with you!
@@Mochibeans You're welcome! And very much indeed, have a nice day 🌍
Very professional video! It was well made and there were clear points. An enjoyable watch and I learnt a lot. Keep making videos ! Thanks
tyty! I plan to keep making content luckily haha, good luck with your pixel art!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this and learned a good amount for a sub-15min video! You've earned a new sub 👍
glad you liked it!
Great video! Thank you!
no problem :)
I've spent the last 2.5 years of my life learning 3D art (and still going) and I do see the complexity in pixel art and can bring a 3D example to illustrate:
The note about doubles is similar to the use of triangles in 3D, usually you model using quads (the term we use for squares, you can do triangles, quads and n-gons which are super bad), this is for ease of modeling but also so animating is actually doable; still from time to time it doesn't hurt to place a triangle in your model when needed as long as you don't overuse them: same I'm seeing with doubles in pixel art, basic theory advices against but there are it's exceptions.
Finally I entirely agree with your advice at the end that's what actually got me going into 3D, and not the endless donuts or rocks tutorials... I always wanted to make 3D characters, and did't really pick up 3D seriously until I decided to make characters, somehow I really needed to hear this because now that I'm serious about picking up pixel art I'm starting to run again into the tutorial hell and don't want to quit again.
btw, I also had the same goal as you when doing 3D, either Anime or realism, very nice coincidence
Oh wow this is a super interesting parallel, thanks for sharing ! 3D modelling is an awesome medium and it's cool to here that some pixel art advice maps to a completely different skill set :o and about your second point, I' glad you agree with it! I've been getting into a bunch of different hobbies recently, and of course it's good to improve technically at it, but without also focusing on what you wanna do or make with them, it's hard to find motivation for sure. RUclips tutorials are both the best and worst things because they can teach you loads but also sap your passion for something in the same amount of time haha. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Ty for the vid. I'm getting into pixel art and game dev at the same time rn. I want to eventually use my own art in future projects, so these small tips are very helpful.
I'm glad you found this helpful! Look forward to seeing a steam release from you one day :D
What an excellent vid. Thank you for your effort, I appreciate it
thanks!
This video inspired me even more..Thank you for the amazing vid!
Glad you enjoyed! Wish you the best on your artistic endeavours 😁
I’m making my own sprites and assets for a game and this is absolutely mind blowing, 10/10 video bro
thank you so much!! Wish you the best on your game ✨️✌️
the quality of editing vs your sub count is preposterous. This is incredible editing and very cohesive writing! Good luck and thanks.
tysm ♡ when this video was uploaded, the channel had less than 1000 subs, so it's just insane to me that it's gotten this big. I'd love to grow the channel, just gotta get back to uploading ig!
6:40 the almost white area, the highlight is not where the most light hits. It's a reflection of the light source. It's where the light can bounce off the object into the viewer's eyes. On the other hand, the centre light is the area where the light hits the most, and it is not that almost white area.
I see, thanks for the insight!
thanks for inspiring me to get to pixel art again
props to this video - really maazing work 🙌
thanks for watching! 😁
Great video! Im watching even tho Im not a beginner but this helps my motivation. And btw great information in this video for beginners!
Thank you! I appreciate more experienced artists getting stuff out of this video as well as beginners, so glad you liked it!
I Learn So Much From This Video... Thank You For Teaching Me That But Also How To Edit My Videos Even Better... I Love The Video And Can't Wait To See More.
I think unfortunately editing is one of those skills where it just takes practice and for me anyway, there's not been many tips that I've learnt to just make editing "better".
One thing I do a lot (and I'm not gonna lie about it) is that I basically steal ideas from people that I like. Other stuff I see on RUclips that I think it cool, I'll try and replicate and see if it works for me. Maybe you could try that :p
Glad you learnt so much and hope this helped!
You’re an amazing tutor ❤ bravo!
tytyyy
My personal advice for fixing jaggies is to flip your canvas as much as you can (I have a shorcut key for it) and that way, it makes it very easy to spot them and smooth them
thank you so much! that's helpful 💕
Yeah that's a good tip, thanks!
Great video 🤩
thanks!

Yess!! Thank you for the kind words 🙏

Hey heyyy thanks!
I'm not even that interested in making pixel art but this video is so well made that I'm completely enraptured, there's so much effort put into this it's amazing
thank you so much! maybe... you should consider trying pixel art (hint hint wink wink) ○-
😮wow first time seen a video about 12:34 .
this video is amazing damn
Appreciate it!

Amazing video. So informational. So good
Glad you liked it!
ty this video was very usefull
np!
Beautiful video :)
Thank you!
wonderful video, i've been a fulltime pixel artist for a little over a year now, and can say that all these tips are greatly valuable. another thing I would recommend (when you're more comfortable and have the basics down) is to get out of your comfort zone when it comes to canvas size. For months and months I wasnt making anything bigger than 108x108, and once i started trying out bigger sizes I really started to hit a stride and felt great improvements.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed! For sure drawing at different resolutions is an invaluable method for improvement. To be honest anything outside of your comfort zone is good, from a more limited palette, to trying a different style without outlines etc. Thanks for the info, and if I ever make a part 2 with intermediate tips, I'll definitely consider putting that in there :p
Sometimes "pillow shading" can look cool. Really good video, thank you!
Mhm, all about experimenting with the situation really. These are just some cool fundamentals I found, but the more I do pixel art, the more I seem to learn about breaking the rules haha
brilliant video. very very well done.
Thanks I appreciate it :)
Thanks for mention dithering.Fewer and fewer people has been using it the way it should be or at all.
I'm glad!!
"soft, safe.. like kirby" EXCUSE ME 😭awesome video though! And wonderful artwork :)
haha thx!!! I really don't know what I was thinking with that kirby clip ahaha
gotta slap those tips on my artworks and hope i could save them
youve been doing rly well! mspaint is a wonder and the stuff youve been posting is insaneee
thnks :)
You are really great at explaining things, which is not a skill a lot of people have.
glad you found it insightful! Years of teaching younger siblings random things has probably helped with learning how to explain 😂
Lovely video, the tips I was looking for! Which program do you use to draw?
tysm! I use aseprite to draw, a program specifically designed for pixel art, but any pixel placing program works!
nice tips
ty 😊
Thanks
No problem!
I don’t do pixel art, but transitioning what I know about things I can do, if you want to make the design of something that’s chaotic, wouldn’t it be a good choice to have inconsistent linework (doubles and the… other one) while also not having them in some places
That's the thing about art really, there's not a real set of defined rules! These are just guidelines for what techniques tend to be effective but of course in any situation theres lots of exceptions. If somethign works more effectively with uneven linework then go for it !
Thanks 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching!
i've been in pixel art for 4 years
i think i became a pro
nice work haha
thanks@@Mochibeans
Excellent tips to consider, thank you. As a feedback for your video: try to tone down the music volume a bit, it fights for attention over your voice. :)
Thanks for the tips! I appreciate you phrasing it nicely haha. I've had a couple audio problems but I think I've finally got it now haha
From the point of view of someone who is already working a regular job, and in the meantime wants to prepare and study to be a full-time freelance artist in the future, In addition to doing personal projects like illustrations and games perhaps, in this scenario, how do you think the Pixel Art market is for someone like that? Or better go for 3D at once?.
hmm, that's a really good question! From my perspective, both 3D modelling and pixel art have vast opportunities for freelancing and commissioning. Personally I'm not very experienced with the modelling side of things so I can't really give a solid comparison, but some things I'd say about pixel art commissioning: it seems like it's really about having a unique visual style, and building a large social media presence/portfolio, and that's if you're wanting to make big pixel art pieces. The other path is of course what you suggested with games and becoming an artist for longer projects and that would be making smaller assets, but a lot of them. Either way, social media is a very useful tool for marketing, and I definitely think that anyone has the ability to move into freelancing through the medium of pixel art! You're gonna have to consult a 3D modeller for advice about that but, in short, yes! pixel art is a viable option, but its always good to have a wide range of tools in your belt, so pixel art, 3D modelling, digital animation, all good things to know how to do as a freelancer :)
@@Mochibeans Well that's very nice to hear, many artists I ask come up with somewhat discouraging answers, either they're trying to cut down on the competition, or they're just trying to convey the notion of that regardless of art, everything is difficult, everything is a challenge, and this is very obvious to me, Choosing pixel art over 3D would end up being more because I love this style, but I also can't ignore whether this choice could also pay my accounts in the future, after all we are in the real world, well thank you very much for your feedback, your channel is indeed one of the best of the best of pixel art on RUclips.
@@johverse Thank you so much! I mean, I do have to somewhat agree with the other artists and say it does come with challenges, but that's pretty much going to be the case with anything in life really, so it doesn't help at all to focus on it. Yes there's heavy competition, yes there's lower demand, but that doesn't make it impossible. You just have to learn to adapt and work around it! Heavy competition? Be unique, or be even better than the rest xD. Lower demand? Give yourself more options, don't limit to pixel art. And just because there's a lower demand doesn't mean that there's none; it's still a massive market, however niche it is. Anyways to end this rant, thank you for the nice words! I really do wish you the best in all your future creative endeavours
I’m a “professional” pixel artist, and this is a great tutorial
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :>
Whenever i do pixel art, i end up using a mosaic filter A LOT to blur out things that i think don't look nice. Which then makes chroma key backgrounds really frustrating..
I'll get there eventually, though- should i practice by drawing sonic characters or other pixel characters first, before jumping into my own ocs?
I'd argue that the subject of the drawing is a lot less important than the drawing itself. Whether you're creating OCs, drawing characters from a fandom or anything else, as long as you're drawing and you're enjoying it that's what counts. It may be easier to start off with fandom characters with proportions already set in stone, but its not at all a requirement. Do what feels the best to do really 👍
Great video! i just have one question, what program for pixel art would you recommend for a beginer? just askin' cuz i cant really find a good one.
Heya, thank you for the nice words! I've put an FAQ in the pinned comment which answers your question, please let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to add there!
so underrated
glad u enjoyeddd :)
Older video I know, but I would recommend turning the music down considerably when talking through videos. I had a really hard time hearing you clearly.
Thanks for the feedback! Audio mixing was something I had never tried before this whole RUclips thing and I definitely underestimated its importance. I"ll make sure to improve if I ever get back to making videos, thanks again :)
Nice video, there were a lot of good pointers to refresh my memory. And very true about those doubles, I recently discovered these can work well when drawing rocks. You just can't experiment enough (〜 ̄▽ ̄)〜
Yeppp, always gotta keep trying new things !!
What would you recommend as an application to use for drawing?
I'd say if you're planning to take pixel art as a really serious hobby then its worth buying Aseprite! It's a specifically pixel-art-based software and really worth it if you want to get it. Otherwise, I'd recommend literally anything that lets you put pixels on a screen, like gimp, pixilart.com, photoshop etc. You just really have to be comfortable or get comfortable using the tool and thats whats most important!
Do you do commissions? I'm wanting to make a creature capture game and need some help with designing the overworld stuff
Hey there, not right now sorry! I'm thinking of starting back up in the summer time so I'll be sure to let you know if anything changes!
Why is this only being recommended to me now and why are you not more popular!!
Haha thanks! To answer your question:
1. Idk it randomly blew up which is awesome
2. I like, don't make videos frequently enough to be liked by RUclips :p big exams coming up meaning I can't put more time into making vids (which I loveee!)
i appreciate this video in a lot of ways, and find myself coming back to it a couple of times, but plz plz plz lower the volume of the music, or raise your mice volume. In the louder portions of the music it makes it very hard to hear you
yes tysm for the feedback!! I've gotten a lot of audio feedback as audio mixing is still very new to me :/ I apologies for the audio quality in some portions and I'm glad you enjoyed anyways 😊
goog video!!!
goog video?!
goog goog video.
@fizzlesProgramming I rly needed that translate to english button. thanks google 👍👍
Animating pixel art is harder than it looks, even watching this video.
I'm using flipaclip and I'm drawing by hand, it's so Complex, I don't know where to begin.
I make 7 layers
Layer1 Background
Layer2 Feet
Layer 3 Legs
Layer4 body
Layer 5 Arms
Layer 5 Head and hands
Layer 6 Hair
Layer 7 extras
I'm bad at walk,jump,run,talk,swim,hand movement
I really want to make my own animated videos.
But is so Hard 😫
Yeah you're totally right haha, animation just requires so many moving parts that you end up getting a bit flooded with layers. I always find a good point to begin is either the main head or torso for a character, as thats where you can really see and feel the movement to check its organic.
The other bits, such as the limbs and clothing are all secondary to that main action with the body typically (although it will change case by case). You're definitely on the right track. Good luck!
@@Mochibeans thanks:)
what app are you using if i may ask? i want to make pixel arts buat i haven't found an app that is comfortable
I'm using Aseprite, but to be honest I always think it really doesn't matter. I used to use pixilart, then the art engine in-built to Gamemaker, and now Aseprite. Nothing will be comfortable when you first try it really, but its about getting past that steep learning curve to get to a llace where you're comfortable. Pick and app and go with it even if it feels weird at first!!
Thought that tree looked familiar 🤔💎
haha scotttttt its been so long
