I like gurren lagann but vs HxH there is not contest. There is basicly 1 main thing goin on in TTG when it comes to themesL, its only 27 and some of them feel like filler where as HxH has so many different arcs and they all insane, it's obvious number 1 show ever. Creating something like HxH is way harder than TTGL

I think one thing that immediately sets fmab from other shounen is that it's complete. That feels so fucking rare, it doesn't have a million episodes, it's not ongoing, it's just a show you can sit down and watch which is like unbelievably rare
To me the only thing keeping it from being literally perfect is that it tries to hard to stay a shonen instead of letting itself dig into seinen territory. Every time the story covers a really dark topic, it feels the need to inject humor which feels out of place. But I think the story in a vacuum is absolutely perfect.

That's my only problem with Joey's criticisms of Bocchi. Half his criticisms are that this thing that happens in Bocchi would never happen in real life when it happens all the time in real life. He's allowed to dislike or hate the show but I would rather he didn't discredit that people are different from him and have different experiences than him. My social anxiety has always affected me and I relate to pretty much everything in the show to a lesser extent, having said that I recognise my social anxiety has never been that bad compared to some others. so if my 'not that bad anxiety' can mostly relate to Bocchi, then someone whose anxiety is that bad would be as bad as Bocchi.
It’s also funny that he brings up Carlos Santana. One of his most famous and breakout performances was at Woodstock when he wasn’t even suppose to play. He took acid since he was told he wasn’t going to play but then the person who was playing backed out. He then had to get on stage tripping and incredibly nervous. He went up on stage and killed it, the rest is history

Yes that happens... Like do you even remember K-ON??? The turtle thing made me completely drop the second season of K-ON since that reached my limited specially since the teacher ended being okay with it, not only that all the other members needed to approve such an a idea that Yui proposed. Sure Bocchi is the embodiment of all social anxiety and problems but we at least see improvement on it and the animation used to express such a thing is done in a unique and funny way.

Garnts explanation at 58:00 about Rudy reminds me of a MHA discusion that was had on Reddit. It was about how alot of people just can not forgive Endeavor despite him trying his best to fix his broken family that he caused. BUT people can easily forgive a character like Vegeta who was a straight up villian who's done awful stuff like destroy civilizations, blow up planets, kill innocent people, make stupid choices that led to bigger problems and had a hand in the death of the z fighters. Kinda like what Garnt said. Endeavors situation is just too real and hits a little too close to people so people find it so much harder to forgive him.
It’s such a fascinating concept in stories for example itachi is a WIDELY beloved character in Naruto even though he committed genocide and heavily worsened his brothers life. You would think he would be hated but because it’s not a commonly relatable situation no one bats an eye.
I can't say anything about MHA But the reason I dislike the character of Rudi is that he is a 30 year old who get reborn and decides to become a pedophile. Thorfinn is a kid that grows up in war and hate, you can understand why he acts like that.

After being bullied at school he shuts himself up into his room and becomes a hikikomori (a real issue in Japan where people can't socialise and end up as a human parasite). He spends decades coping with life using the internet, just like many people that watch anime today he copes using fantasy. As a result of this, his mental state is completely fucked and he is a complete bum of a human being. That is the setup for the character Rudeus. Does somebody like this deserve to live a happy life and redeem themself? Does he deserve a real place In the world? Just because he's a bad human does he deserve to die alone with no friends? Mushoku tensei is a redemption of the lowest of low human being into a man that protects, loves and provides for his family and makes a meaningful difference to the world. People that hate this anime are just projecting their own shortcomings onto rudeus, pointing out his flaws. But they are hypocrites since they also likely spend their real life coping with media and games. They are projecting their own issues with imperfection onto those around them. You are not perfect, nobody is perfect so don't judge others based on your ideals. These are the core ideas of Mushoku Tensei.

Yeah. A huge part of why Mushoku ended up being an isekai is because the author wanted to meet where a lot of the flawed were. The boom in isekai escapism was based on the central premise that they would be based chads if only they had the chance to be reincarnated into another world, and Mushoku tensei just straight up shows how, no, you'd still be the way you are but you have a chance to better by doing the same things that you can do in our own world here and now. This point flies over the heads of people like it's a stealth bomber.
To me it feels like such a non-argument to ask why it has to be in isekai form if the story is about a person bettering himself. It's just the packaging of the narrative. It doesn't reduce or subtract from the core narrative in any way and usually it's the people who just have a problem with MT for its more controversial moments who seem to have an issue with it being isekai.

As someone who has shown Steins;Gate to a few of my family and friends I can confirm, that for some people it definetly doesnt feel slow. Just because the first half builds up to a big twist, that does not necessarily make it "slow". Because especially if you pay attention to details (and also to music i think) you can sense A LOT of tension during the first half (aka you really feel the build up being a build up). And even though some of the D-Mails might feel random, the mystery aspect can easily be strong enough to still keep you engaged. Characters like Suzuha for example are mysterious/intruiging from the start (even though they only become truly relevant later). There also are a lot of small payoffs in the first half in general: Everytime the D-Mails change the past is a small surprise and with it the paranoia/uncomfort of Okabe increases (and with that the engagement of the viewer). I think this feeling of "jokingly being a conspiracy theorist and then realizing that your conspiracy is kinda true and youre way to deep to escape from it" is enough to not make the show feel slow. If anything this feeling intensifies with a 'slower' pacing (which im Not even sure Steinsgate has, the "pace" is just a lot more suttle) For example there even are people calling the first episode slow, probably because there is Not that much "actually happening". But if you pay attention to the music and the direction (and the shit ton of small Things Happening) you cant tell me that this is slow. The Hook of the first episode is still crazy to this day I feel like and it got my best friend instantly. Yeah maybe that wasnt the best example, because the first episode is probably one of the best. But if you think that even the first one is slow, the show probably just isnt something for you. And not because it is slow but because that kind of Story(telling) is not for you. Also the show is still pretty funny/memable (at least in German dub lol) which also keeps the entertainment up Funnily I think Steinsgate 0 is a good example for a slow show (which doesnt make it Bad, but maybe a lot less bingable. And Steinsgate seems to be very bingable for a lot of people) I know that this exactly sounds like the people Connor Made fun of. But I still wanted to comment because I have seen the show still "working" for some people. Also I dont think that you have to be highly intelligent, just interested. Its Just about feeling that there is something not actually getting/predicting what it is.

Yeah. This is why I wish the anime didn't cut the convo in S2E23 the way they did. It cut out all of Rudeus's convo with Roxy about what a man who has lost his entire family, who has betrayed them, who now cannot go back to them to apologize or make amends can even do to remedy the situation. I feel like this part of the novel was this explicit because the author knew it had to be to get through some thick skulls and lo and behold when it's cut a lot of people don't get it. Regardless, the anime made a mistake on that particular aspect so I think that particular criticism is more valid than others.

@waveybooo simple counterpoint: I was. When I was a kid my social anxiety was a living hell. I couldnt talk to people. My voice would tremble even when talking to my own friends. I would literally begin shaking just trying to meet peoples eyes. Every little social indiscretion I made was like torture for me. It would eat me up. To this day I have never any pain equal to the agony I felt then. And with all this and yet still to feel so irrepressibly lonely. I will never wish that hell on anyone. When people dismiss these experiences it feels like a slap in the face.

Joey says he doesn’t believe someone who was backstage having a panic attack couldn’t get on stage and perform just fine. That is exactly how my anxiety works. I may not be doing anything nearly that stressful, but I feel like I’m going to die leading up to any kind of public speaking until I start talking, and then I’m good.
As an introvert full time musician, I had panic attacks nearly everyday for most of my life lol. I would throw up right before going on stage, and I couldn’t eat at all the day of a show. Nowadays I am fine I learned through exposure therapy. That being said I actually agree w Joey that bocci music is just ok it’s really not up there for music anime for me. It is her passion so it would make sense that doing it would make her relax against all fears. Simply one forgets those fears, it is not that deep. There is a reason people always suggest self care to deal with anxiety. Now I would understand Joey if it was about trauma because it is not as simple as "just forget" but it is obviously not.
How I view Bocchi is that her behavior is not really realistic, but it signifies how a person with social anxiety sees themselves. It's overexaggarated for a comedic relief too, and her behavior shouldn't really be compared to reality, so I kinda die a little bit inside when Joey tries to make the point that people like that don't exist. She's a fictional character in an anime and that's why it works.

I don’t think Joey and Grant have enough appreciation to Gurren Lagann in specifically the writing. They kept talking about the emotions which is one of Gurren Lagann’s biggest strengths, but they didn’t give credit to a lot of Gurren Lagann’s very clever storytelling and writing. It’s a show that absolutely holds up today and might even be better upon a rewatch since you’ll notice just how well the story ties together after the adrenaline wears down.
People say Joey is pretentious because he thinks Lain and Monster and other "deep" anime are the best, but honestly the most pretentious opinion is to hype up K-on while reducing Bocchi, Bandori, GBC and other girl band anime to "cheap K-on clones". If you like K-on, I don't see how you could dislike so much especially those three, even if they are not the same obviously.

The way I interpreted Frieren story was that it started out as a journey of us seeing her journeying to understand how meaningful her relationships with her past comrades were, but once she took Fern on as a student it went from that to a story about Frieren’s eventual death. During their exam arc I felt like the idea of Elves being nearly immortal and coupled with both Frieren and Serie mention how in the future if anyone is going to kill them it’ll be a human. All of these points left an impression that this was evolving into a story about her death either once she achieves her goal of meeting Himmel or her death will lead to their reunion.
It's about an introvert learning how to communicate through music you could remove the music and change it to something else and it still would hit similarly

I really wish the boys would all rewatch Steins;Gate because it's genuinely such a good show with so many amazing scenes but every time it gets brought up in a video they never talk specifics they just say "I remember it being really good but I can't specify what I liked about it because I can't remember the specifics. all I remember is the beginning and the destination and it being amazing". Since they rely purely on their memories about the show they just think about it's legacy as being a geniusly written show with a calculated story but they forget all of the great character writing and emotional moments in-between all of these huge revelations in the story that make them so great. ex. Mr. Braun committing suicide, Suzuha discovering that Daru is her dad, Okabe stealing the phone from Moeka and sending the dmail but realizing it didn't work because past Moeka didn't believe the message, Suzuha time leaping back in time and becoming someone Mr. Braun looks up to. All of these are such great moments not only in terms of genius calculated writing plot wise but also character wise

I have really bad social anxiety, but I can sorta understand him because I've always been astounded by people who embarrass themselves infront of others because they have social anxiety. Like I've met people like Bocchi who freak out and stay quiet and are just super awkward and it always confuses the hell out of me because my anxiety makes me act normal because I would off myself if anyone thought I wasn't normal lmao (I also would never be able to perform in public of my own volition though) When I was a kid I actively disliked those types of kids because I always felt like they were faking it for attention because if I could pretend to be comfortable/normal despite having a panic attack then so could they (I don't think that anymore since I know it comes in all different forms and depends on different factors, I also thought it was embarrassing when other kids cried at that age, just saying I can understand where Joey is coming from)

I couldn't really put my finger on why I found it violently unenjoyable, despite enjoying very similar shows such as K-On and Hitoribocchi no marumaru seikatsu (the latter of which is the better Bocchi and co), but it's probably smth similar to what you've explained.

Tbh I disagree with Joey ALOT. And I also liked/didn’t hate Bocci. I’m also an introvert. But I actually agree with him here, I am musician my whole life and that’s my full time career (not that it makes a difference everyone is entitled to their opinion). If referring to the whole Bocchi the Rock thing, while I've not seen the anime, it seems she might be an introvert but more accurately, she has severe social anxiety and they're not the same. I am an introvert, I am happy with my own company and don't really yearn for the company of others, though maybe in the future I might like to try having friends. I'm not against socializing, but I'm very content to be by myself. Social anxiety is someone who wants to make friends or socialize but it brings on extreme panic. The two can have some over-lap and share a Vinn Diagram, but they're not the same thing. I say this because I'm admittedly quite tired of people mixing them up. Introversion is being seen the same as social anxiety and it's not. I kind of feel like I'm always on clean up duty when speaking to extroverts and having to course-correct because when I say I'm an introvert, the reaction is imemdiately negative. Forgive me, those with social anxiety, that will have to be your battle to speak on and explain since I've not walked in those shoes, but I'm going to at least try to set the record straight for us introverts 😅 I saw an animated short here on RUclips not too long ago that I seriously wish I could find again because it explains it so perfectly, of a character living on their own in the woods, not because they hate people or people make them nervous or anxious, but because it's what brings them joy. The character is single and maybe one day they'll have a partner but likely no kids, and that's also not due to hating kids, it's just not what they want for their life. I felt like the animator got the "assignment" and did a beautiful job of representing "us".😂 There's plenty of content about social anxiety but not enough on just being an introvert. As someone who used to play in a band, during my first time playing on stage, I can relate to bocchi feeling all anxious backstage but then everything changes once you're actually on stage with all those blinding spotlights pointed at you, the anxiety is still there but you'll also think to yourself "I'm finally here, I'm not gonna waste it" then the moment you see people enjoying listening to you while playing on stage, it feels magical, like you want more of it, the emotions you get knowing you're giving people a good time through your music is unmatched, so yeah I would say bocchi is realistic in terms of that moment where she was socially anxious backstage then felt like a rockstar when she was finally playing on stage, cause I experienced the same moment and emotions before

Unlike Garnt who have to actively try to have a social interaction in University when things felt a lot more concious. I think one thing that immediately sets fmab from other shounen is that it's complete. That feels so fucking rare, it doesn't have a million episodes, it's not ongoing, it's just a show you can sit down and watch which is like unbelievably rare
To me the only thing keeping it from being literally perfect is that it tries to hard to stay a shonen instead of letting itself dig into seinen territory. Every time the story covers a really dark topic, it feels the need to inject humor which feels out of place. But I think the story in a vacuum is absolutely perfect.

That's my only problem with Joey's criticisms of Bocchi. Half his criticisms are that this thing that happens in Bocchi would never happen in real life when it happens all the time in real life. He's allowed to dislike or hate the show but I would rather he didn't discredit that people are different from him and have different experiences than him. My social anxiety has always affected me and I relate to pretty much everything in the show to a lesser extent, having said that I recognise my social anxiety has never been that bad compared to some others. so if my 'not that bad anxiety' can mostly relate to Bocchi, then someone whose anxiety is that bad would be as bad as Bocchi.
It’s also funny that he brings up Carlos Santana. One of his most famous and breakout performances was at Woodstock when he wasn’t even suppose to play. He took acid since he was told he wasn’t going to play but then the person who was playing backed out. He then had to get on stage tripping and incredibly nervous. The turtle thing made me completely drop the second season of K-ON since that reached my limited specially since the teacher ended being okay with it, not only that all the other members needed to approve such an a idea that Yui proposed. Sure Bocchi is the embodiment of all social anxiety and problems but we at least see improvement on it and the animation used to express such a thing is done in a unique and funny way.

Garnts explanation at 58:00 about Rudy reminds me of a MHA discusion that was had on Reddit. It was about how alot of people just can not forgive Endeavor despite him trying his best to fix his broken family that he caused. BUT people can easily forgive a character like Vegeta who was a straight up villian who's done awful stuff like destroy civilizations, blow up planets, kill innocent people, make stupid choices that led to bigger problems and had a hand in the death of the z fighters.

After being bullied at school he shuts himself up into his room and becomes a hikikomori (a real issue in Japan where people can't socialise and end up as a human parasite). He spends decades coping with life using the internet, just like many people that watch anime today he copes using fantasy.
As a result of this, his mental state is completely fucked and he is a complete bum of a human being. That is the setup for the character Rudeus. Does somebody like this deserve to live a happy life and redeem themself? Does he deserve a real place In the world? Just because he's a bad human does he deserve to die alone with no friends? Mushoku tensei is a redemption of the lowest of low human being into a man that protects, loves and provides for his family and makes a meaningful difference to the world.
People that hate this anime are just projecting their own shortcomings onto rudeus, pointing out his flaws. But they are hypocrites since they also likely spend their real life coping with media and games. They are projecting their own issues with imperfection onto those around them. You are not perfect, nobody is perfect so don't judge others based on your ideals. These are the core ideas of Mushoku Tensei.

Yeah. A huge part of why Mushoku ended up being an isekai is because the author wanted to meet where a lot of the flawed were. The boom in isekai escapism was based on the central premise that they would be based chads if only they had the chance to be reincarnated into another world, and Mushoku tensei just straight up shows how, no, you'd still be the way you are but you have a chance to better by doing the same things that you can do in our own world here and now.
This point flies over the heads of people like it's a stealth bomber.
To me it feels like such a non-argument to ask why it has to be in isekai form if the story is about a person bettering himself. It's just the packaging of the narrative. It doesn't reduce or subtract from the core narrative in any way and usually it's the people who just have a problem with MT for its more controversial moments who seem to have an issue with it being isekai.

As someone who has shown Steins;Gate to a few of my family and friends I can confirm, that for some people it definetly doesnt feel slow.
Just because the first half builds up to a big twist, that does not necessarily make it "slow". Because especially if you pay attention to details (and also to music i think) you can sense A LOT of tension during the first half (aka you really feel the build up being a build up). And even though some of the D-Mails might feel random, the mystery aspect can easily be strong enough to still keep you engaged. Characters like Suzuha for example are mysterious/intruiging from the start (even though they only become truly relevant later). There also are a lot of small payoffs in the first half in general: Everytime the D-Mails change the past is a small surprise and with it the paranoia/uncomfort of Okabe increases (and with that the engagement of the viewer).
I think this feeling of "jokingly being a conspiracy theorist and then realizing that your conspiracy is kinda true and youre way to deep to escape from it" is enough to not make the show feel slow. If anything this feeling intensifies with a 'slower' pacing (which im Not even sure Steinsgate has, the "pace" is just a lot more suttle)
For example there even are people calling the first episode slow, probably because there is Not that much "actually happening". But if you pay attention to the music and the direction (and the shit ton of small Things Happening) you cant tell me that this is slow. The Hook of the first episode is still crazy to this day I feel like and it got my best friend instantly.
Yeah maybe that wasnt the best example, because the first episode is probably one of the best. But if you think that even the first one is slow, the show probably just isnt something for you. And not because it is slow but because that kind of Story(telling) is not for you.
Also the show is still pretty funny/memable (at least in German dub lol) which also keeps the entertainment up

Yeah. This is why I wish the anime didn't cut the convo in S2E23 the way they did. It cut out all of Rudeus's convo with Roxy about what a man who has lost his entire family, who has betrayed them, who now cannot go back to them to apologize or make amends can even do to remedy the situation. I feel like this part of the novel was this explicit because the author knew it had to be to get through some thick skulls and lo and behold when it's cut a lot of people don't get it.
Regardless, the anime made a mistake on that particular aspect so I think that particular criticism is more valid than others.

I would literally begin shaking just trying to meet peoples eyes. Every little social indiscretion I made was like torture for me. It would eat me up. To this day I have never any pain equal to the agony I felt then. And with all this and yet still to feel so irrepressibly lonely. I will never wish that hell on anyone.
When people dismiss these experiences it feels like a slap in the face.

How I view Bocchi is that her behavior is not really realistic, but it signifies how a person with social anxiety sees themselves. It's overexaggarated for a comedic relief too, and her behavior shouldn't really be compared to reality, so I kinda die a little bit inside when Joey tries to make the point that people like that don't exist. She's a fictional character in an anime and that's why it works.

I don’t think Joey and Grant have enough appreciation to Gurren Lagann in specifically the writing. They kept talking about the emotions which is one of Gurren Lagann’s biggest strengths, but they didn’t give credit to a lot of Gurren Lagann’s very clever storytelling and writing. It’s a show that absolutely holds up today and might even be better upon a rewatch since you’ll notice just how well the story ties together after the adrenaline wears down.

The way I interpreted Frieren story was that it started out as a journey of us seeing her journeying to understand how meaningful her relationships with her past comrades were, but once she took Fern on as a student it went from that to a story about Frieren’s eventual death.
During their exam arc I felt like the idea of Elves being nearly immortal and coupled with both Frieren and Serie mention how in the future if anyone is going to kill them it’ll be a human. All of these points left an impression that this was evolving into a story about her death either once she achieves her goal of meeting Himmel or her death will lead to their reunion.

Since they rely purely on their memories about the show they just think about it's legacy as being a geniusly written show with a calculated story but they forget all of the great character writing and emotional moments in-between all of these huge revelations in the story that make them so great. ex. Mr. Braun committing suicide, Suzuha discovering that Daru is her dad, Okabe stealing the phone from Moeka and sending the dmail but realizing it didn't work because past Moeka didn't believe the message, Suzuha time leaping back in time and becoming someone Mr. Braun looks up to. All of these are such great moments not only in terms of genius calculated writing plot wise but also character wise

I have really bad social anxiety, but I can sorta understand him because I've always been astounded by people who embarrass themselves infront of others because they have social anxiety. Like I've met people like Bocchi who freak out and stay quiet and are just super awkward and it always confuses the hell out of me because my anxiety makes me act normal because I would off myself if anyone thought I wasn't normal lmao (I also would never be able to perform in public of my own volition though)
When I was a kid I actively disliked those types of kids because I always felt like they were faking it for attention because if I could pretend to be comfortable/normal despite having a panic attack then so could they (I don't think that anymore since I know it comes in all different forms and depends on different factors, I also thought it was embarrassing when other kids cried at that age, just saying I can understand where Joey is coming from)

If referring to the whole Bocchi the Rock thing, while I've not seen the anime, it seems she might be an introvert but more accurately, she has severe social anxiety and they're not the same. I am an introvert, I am happy with my own company and don't really yearn for the company of others, though maybe in the future I might like to try having friends. I'm not against socializing, but I'm very content to be by myself. Social anxiety is someone who wants to make friends or socialize but it brings on extreme panic. The two can have some over-lap and share a Vinn Diagram, but they're not the same thing.
I say this because I'm admittedly quite tired of people mixing them up. Introversion is being seen the same as social anxiety and it's not. I kind of feel like I'm always on clean up duty when speaking to extroverts and having to course-correct because when I say I'm an introvert, the reaction is imemdiately negative. Forgive me, those with social anxiety, that will have to be your battle to speak on and explain since I've not walked in those shoes, but I'm going to at least try to set the record straight for us introverts 😅
I saw an animated short here on RUclips not too long ago that I seriously wish I could find again because it explains it so perfectly, of a character living on their own in the woods, not because they hate people or people make them nervous or anxious, but because it's what brings them joy. The character is single and maybe one day they'll have a partner but likely no kids, and that's also not due to hating kids, it's just not what they want for their life. I felt like the animator got the "assignment" and did a beautiful job of representing "us".😂 There's plenty of content about social anxiety but not enough on just being an introvert. We're not as represented because we're always inaccurately depicted/labeled.

As someone who used to play in a band, during my first time playing on stage, I can relate to bocchi feeling all anxious backstage but then everything changes once you're actually on stage with all those blinding spotlights pointed at you, the anxiety is still there but you'll also think to yourself "I'm finally here, I'm not gonna waste it" then the moment you see people enjoying listening to you while playing on stage, it feels magical, like you want more of it, the emotions you get knowing you're giving people a good time through your music is unmatched, so yeah I would say bocchi is realistic in terms of that moment where she was socially anxious backstage then felt like a rockstar when she was finally playing on stage, cause I experienced the same moment and emotions before

He never actually have to deal with social anxiety, because he probably have a good progression from childhood. Unlike Garnt who have to actively try to have a social interaction in University when things felt a lot more concious. This is what bocchi was supposed to represent, what it feels like to have social anxiety, not what it looks like.
