- With Speedweeks 2017 kicking off, I went back in my archives and dug out the 1974 Permatex 200. This event featuring the NASCAR modified division on the 3.8 mile road course ran for three years (1974, 1975 and 1976).
In 1974, of the 36 starters only 10 were around at the finish. The race features modified legend Richie Evans along with Maynard Troyer, Tiny Lund, Geoff Bodine and Bobby Allison.
For me, the cars steal the show, Paul Radford led for 5 laps in a 1972 AMC Gremlin. If you look carefully at the pace lap coverage, you will catch a glimpse of the 1936 Chevrolet driven by Jack Duffie. There are some nice shots of Richie Evans 1972 Ford Pinto as well. Enjoy!
70's, those weird modified cars and a road course
I think I found the perfect nascar race
If only there was more footage
NASCAR.. Bring this back ! This is Racing.
More people in the stands than there would be for a current Xfinity race. I wish this was still a thing.
Looking stylish Bud
Great racing
Back in the Day...i love it and sure miss those day's.
#61 Ritchie Evans !! The Rapid Roman!!
Got to see Ritchie. around 75 or so
Rome NY
This was great to see again. I was sitting right where the cars entered the road course. Thanks for posting.
Wow look at this wild show, old school mods on the daytona road course
Run what you brung! The Gremlin was doing a commendable job against some interesting competition, at least until it developed handling, um, gremlins.
That looked like fun. The homies going heads up with Allison. Big fun.
Maynard Troyer had a very fine looking race car.
All his cars were beautiful.
Kurt Dietrich When I saw colored photos I would always admire his cars. Would have only seen him live at Trenton and maybe New Egypt or Wall Stadium.
Sucks that the stands are so empty...this was so much more exciting than just running an oval..dig those Gremlins!
I think it is a bit misleading as the infield can absorb many spectators. Does not help that it was held 1pm on a Friday afternoon, still...attendance estimate for the day was 30,000. It was a "roval" double header with the IROC event earlier that morning.
Yeah the gremlins look awesome
Richie,my old buddy with his pit crew Roger Brei....RIP
'60s and '70s were the best for stock car racing, especially the Modifieds
Thanks for this!
Richie and Tiny both classic drivers who did things their way and it usually worked for them.
thanks for this .
Yes Richie ever was the best mechanic I've ever known inside and outside of a car where did he go after the third place nobody had any recording of that
AMC Gremlin!!!!
1936 Chevrolet driven by Jack Duffie on right @0:52
@7:44 That's Bob Park in a 1965 Corvair (#19) courteously missing the apex as the leader Allison comes past.
Thats right Pinto and Grmlin bodied cars sporting big block engines duking it out.
Richie Evans was the very best.
I hate to say this but those AMC gremlins make a damn good looking car
GREMLINS ARE AWESOME
brandon harmon.
The International 304 was a great powerplant, used in many of AMC's vehicles....
Not sure if that's under their hoods?
But they sure were under mine.
MTpockets Woodenickle The 304 was an AMC engine, International bought AMC 304s for Scouts and their Pickups.
@@mtpocketswoodenickle2637 actually it was AMC that sold the 304s, 360s, and 401a to International. Also used in Jeeps and Brookland cars
Lol Geoff Bodeen
Wow, an AMC Gremlin??
Johnny Bryant of Bassett, Va in the #57 gremlin!
4:13 look at that, its old blue, she is still on track today.
Where does she run?
HODIUSDUDE check my channel, last weeks tour video, the 3 is driven by rowan pennik
LOVE it!!!! Got any more old ones to post?
Going through my archive and checking against what has already been posted on YT, looks like I might have a few of the 300 mile races that have not been UL'd elsewhere.
Thanks
HODIUSDUDE my GOD post ALL Car and Track! Ive been looking for USAC stock episode in Northern Wisconsin since i lost my copy in a house fire back before you tube. An entire USAC facebook group would MORE than appreciate
AWESOME. Thanks for this post. Geoff Bodine, Paul Newman, Allison, Richie Evans, gives meaning to “racing Gremlins
The Boss. Mr Paul Newman :D
When men were racing and boys only watched how it's done, not that wreckers and checkers bullshit of today...
Music sounds straight out of "Fat Albert" or "Scooby Doo".
I'm glad geoff bodine changed his name from "bo-dean'' when he went to cup
You caught that too
Jethro Bodine was probably still in everybody's minds. The Beverly Hillbillies had been off first-run tv for just 3 years.
Nice!
Bugsy Stevens in a very non-modified looking car!
How bout dennis Giroux!!!
Didn't watch, I want on an oval!
Lousy race
Gotta love the comment about Paul Newman
