Vanessa is the executor of Kobe's estate. The Lakers have to go through her for everything and respect her wishes. She gets the say on who gets to be there. So don't blame them, blame Vanessa for why the parents weren't there.

This is an emotional and happy moment. We miss you so much, my favorite basketball player ❤. I still get teary eyed, cause I still can't believe you gone. Before you passed I always would pull up all the old games and the championship games we won( Lakers) and get all excited as though I haven't watch them for the umpteenth time. I would watch these games at least two or three times a week, never would get tired of watching them. Such great memories, as I would throw my basketball game parties. That looks cool. It’s his 81-point game pose when he still wore #8. But dang, three statues for Kobe? 😂 That’s a lot of Kobes and the other Laker greats only get one? I feel having three statues is kinda overkill. And he already has two retired jerseys.
It’s not like Kobe put the Lakers on the map. They won 6 chips in LA before he got there. He appeals to the Millennials and kids born in the 90s and 00s who never saw Magic or MJ play. Not to diss what he’s done but it’s almost like it’s making us forget every Laker great before Kobe by giving him three statues.
Should we forget that Shaq won 3 Finals MVPs and 1 MVP while Kobe won no MVPs when they were teammates for 8 years? And Shaq was getting doubled and triple teamed a lot. I guess it kinda makes up for Kobe only having 1 MVP. He should have at least 3 (03, 06, 08) or maybe at least 4 (09). But that’s a lot of statues for one player.
I’m still not confident to say Kobe is the greatest Laker ever either. That’s still very arguable. He did miss the playoffs in his prime. Pau Gasol was gift wrapped to him from Jerry West. Skill and greatness are two different things. Magic Johnson won 3 MVPs, 3 Finals MVPs, and beat Larry Bird 3x for a championship including college. Greatness is different than talent/skill.
It’s not what you can do. It’s what you’ve done that makes you greater. Penny was more skilled and talented than Magic Johnson but I’d never put him over Magic. And beating a player 1-on-1 doesn’t decide if that player is better than the other player. Basketball is 5-on-5. Kobe’s PER is only in the late 20s while MJ is #1 and LeBron is #2.
If everything was decided by 1-on-1 games, Magic and Bird wouldn’t make the top 50. This isn’t boxing or tennis. It’s still a team game. And I would bet on Shaq to beat everyone 1-on-1. That NBA 2K24 video on RUclips where Kobe beat MJ and then Shaq 1-on-1 was probably programmed by Kobe fans since he’s on the cover. Kyrie is more skilled than John Stockton and probably beats him 1-on-1 but I’d still take John as the better player.
Heck, I’ll take Wemby over MJ, Kobe, and LeBron if they went 1-on-1. They’re too small for Victor. Shaq is like fighting a kaiju in basketball. Shaqzilla would turn everyone into barbeque chicken. He’ll feast because every legend would be too weak and too small to stop him. Hakeem once said defending Shaq was like trying to stop a train. My money is on the Shaq Daddy to Oppenheimer everyone 1-on-1.
