I’m a carrier for 19 years If I have to deliver mail and the street is narrow, I’ll go to the right as far as I can with the hazard lights on and park, and walk the extra couple feet to the mailbox. Cars behind me can wait, or go around. The postal manual M41 forbids driving on sidewalks. This carrier should be given an investigative interview by his managers. That’s their job
Its the managers that gave the all good on them doing it. They probably encourage it even. The issue is the road is too narrow and they don't want to block traffic to deliver mail, so the mail service encourages drivers to drive on the sidewalk to avoid blocking traffic instead of fixing the issue. This probably even goes up to the town level government.
@@MrPAULONEAL Then that will be one of the routes that cannot be done quickly and the postal office has to plan schedules accordingly. I think they're just being petty at this point.
As a 44 year employee, if the box is back over the edge of the side walk, you can drive on their to deliver it. (regardless of what the manual says) Or the homeowner can apply to move it further out. You're not required to jump any stop on a mounted route, as you know, they don't want ANY accidents. Could the carrier be more understanding, YES! But, remember, we're only hearing his side of the story. Him being a jerk about land that isn't his, could have ticked off the regular carrier. All the land to the left of the sidewalk is municipal property, it's an easement. The carrier that drove onto the sidewalk, to serve his neighbor, should be ordered to the edge of the street. The carrier should have cut the stop and requested management to direct the customer to move the box. I had one postmaster who would help, he'd have maintenance go out and do it for the customer if they needed the help. They don't seem to care as much today?
Most of the mailboxes there are up past the sidewalks…and they are allowed to drive up to the mailbox to deliver the mail. Also that land between the street and sidewalk isn’t that guy’s property….it’s the easement and belongs to the city….the sidewalk also is city property and not this guy’s property.
all you have to do is have a cop sit there and wait for it to happen then he can pull them over and get a ticket, but im sure the PD doesnt want to get into a pissing match with a federal government agency. The USPS clearly proved they have a vendetta against him, once he moved the mailbox they still refused to give him his mail. withholding someones mail is illegal. this needs to be investigated at the highest level and the postmaster general needs to be fired.
Two important things to note. They are only a quasi government agency, and they aren’t withholding the mail, they just aren’t delivering it. The guy will have to go to the post office to pick it up…. The post office are definitely abusing their power, and the story pretty well makes my blood boil, but I wanted to mention those two bits of information.
Local police doesn’t deal with the post office, they will refer you to the postal inspection team. Postal inspectors are federal agents and they are the law enforcement of the usps. I had an issue with my postal carrier and call the police and they say that it out of their jurisdiction. They can’t do anything, only the postal inspector that can do something. Local police are pathetic
We had an issue, the road does a "tee" and dead ends on both sides of the tee. I live on the right side t. The post office made me move my mailbox to the top of the t so the snow plows kept destroying my box. They would not replace my box unless I moved it. I moved it on to my side of the tee. They put letters in my box saying they wouldn't deliver to me until I moved it back. I called the post master and she said the mail carrier is not allowed to back up but she does it on the left side of the tee when she delivers to those houses. They would not speak to that. The trash guys turn in my side pick up my trash and back down to the other side. We are talking feet not miles. I gave up and just buy the cheapest mailbox now everytime it gets crushed. I can't wait for the government to control healthcare!
As a retired Letter carrier, I would like to say that if my supervisor heard about this I would be facing a suspension. Maybe calling the Postal Inspectors would get better results, as they are the postal police.
@@carlcarlson5553inside of city limits it’s illegal to park on the sidewalk or your yard or to drive on them. And to block the sidewalk is illegal too. Outside of city limits you can park on your property.

I live in a semi- rural area where all of the mailboxes are located right along the road. Drivers simply slow down and go around the mail vehicle. The postal service there says it is about safety, yet in the video, it shows the mail carrier driving up on the sidewalk right near an intersection and blocking the view of a white car. I guess they are perfectly fine with endangering other people.
Yeah it's a safety hazard. People drive like they don't have brakes. Or just mad in general if they're behind a delivery driver. Amazon drivers have to worry about this as well.
The mailbox was originally mounted on the far side of the mailbox. Post Office should have instructed the residents mailbox mounting regulations from the beginning

@@Orxenhorf So far as I know, there haven't been any new walking routes in more than 50 years. The houses where the carrier walks are all older than that. That's not going to change, the postal service loses quite a bit of money for every house they serve by walking.
As a former City Carrier. Whenever we got notices to not drive or walk thru yards we were supposed to follow the residence request. However, some carriers are lazy and instead of follow the instructions they would just ignore delivering the mail and have the residence come to the post office to pick it up. Seems this carrier is being petty and turning this into a bigger deal than is should be in the first place
If the mail carriers can not safely deliver to mailboxes along the road, then it needs to be made a walking route. On the other side of the street, you can see that the mailboxes are on the houses and it is a walking route.
This. Both sides need a walking route which is not efficient. For vehicle delivery all boxes need to be as this homeowner has done; place it at the curb. The safety issue mentioned is that they worry that the mail trucks will get hit by fast-moving traffic; therefore, they need a different solution. Can't do it, they can try! They can't mess with a mail carrier. I carried and had multiple interactions with police. Police that thought they had jurisdiction over mail carriers. In each case they either were admonished by a judge, Postal Inspector or Postmaster. I was trapped in a business park by fire equipment, so I had to park in a fire lane to deliver my mail. The fire chief threatened to tow my truck. Keep in mind it was HIS VEHICLES that were causing the problem. I told him I'd move if he'd simply give me the space. Instead of helping, he again threatened to have me arrested and towed! At that point I said, "I f*cking dare you! Touch me or the vehicle, you'll be the only one arrested!" Later, after he gave up, he was visited by the Inspection Service. Where they explained I could park wherever necessary and that he couldn't touch me, the mail and the vehicle or he'd be arrested. If you are aware, NYC police tried that a few years back. Got angry with a carrier delivering packages that had a turn lane blocked. They slammed the carrier to the ground, arrested them (BUT LEFT THE VEHICLE IN THE TURN LANE?)! Big mistake, if the Postal Inspectors hadn't gone easy one them, they could have gone to prison. They got their ears chewed off and asses handed to them by a federal judge. Only uninformed police officers mess with carriers without a justified reason. Driving on the curb, isn't sufficient.

Typical Post Office response. We live on a hill and last winter we had a nasty ice storm that lasted several days. A fellow came down the hill, lost control of his pickup, and sheared the ‘cluster mailbox’ right off the concrete sidewalk. The Post Office told us we will need to DRIVE to the nearest Post Office (4 miles from us) to get our mail because putting mail on our porch was unsafe. They had absolutely NO plans to replace it based on the idea that they were not responsible for the damage to the mailbox. Went round and round for 4 months. Got our City Councilor involved, not to mention the Mayor and finally our State Representative for area. It took almost 5 months but we finally got the mailbox replaced.

@Michael-pi8ps Errrrm a postal carrier still has to abide by traffic law. I was a Police Officer for 20 years... and I would've cited that driver for driving on the sidewalk (in MI, Mich. Admin. Code R. 28.1448 - Rule 448. Driving on sidewalk prohibited; violation as misdemeanor). The USPS may think that they're entitled by not being required to have registration plates, but traffic law is a different story. This is from a news report: "David Van Allen, regional spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said in an interview that postal employees 'are subject to obeying local traffic laws and ordinances just like any other citizen. However, the Postal Service cannot legally be billed for any traffic violation fines incurred by its employees.' He added that there is no legal system in place to transfer liability from the Postal Service to an employee, an issue because these tickets were the result of traffic cameras, not police stops with tickets handed to individuals." So, if a traffic ticket is issued under an owner's liability law (like traffic cameras), the USPS apparently doesn't have to pay; but, if the ticket is issued to the driver, it's a valid ticket that the driver is responsible for.

My sister had this problem with guys using her very large lawn to turn around, etc. she had some VERY LARGE rocks placed in a few places. She began seeing car fenders and undercarriages on her lawn. Didn’t take long, and they stayed off her lawn.
Why are the mailboxes not along the road? Ive never seen that before. They should be along the road that way the mailman can drive by and drop off the mail and just keep going. Who tf puts the mailbox on the inside of the sidewalk, thats dumb
I thought the same at first, but then It stated when he put his box by the road, the post office stopped delivering his mail saying it was a "safety hazard". So it's the post office having them do it. Then the post office should be walking the route not driving it, if they want the boxes there.
You seem to be one of a few here that are actually thinking clearly. The mail man will drive to the box on this route. If everyone would put their box at the road, then this won't be an issue.
@michellehawkins1027 yea I used to be a amazon driver so I would interact with the mailmen all the time. Either they would drive and reach their hand out the window and put it in the mailbox or they would park at the end of the street and walk. I do agree though there is no reason they shouldn't deliver his mail.
Good luck! The postman we had dug a rut in front of our mailbox years ago. The post office stated they would stop delivering if I didn't fix it. We showed them a video of the carrier driving up to the box so fast that his front tire locked up when he braked. The video also included him spinning his tire when he left. We refused all requests for repair and we are still getting our mail. The rut is about a foot deep now.
@@sinisterthoughts2896 I see this in my area. Postal workers have to drive off the road to reach the mailbox. Customers need to either move their boxes closer to the street or put in a solid surface.
When we lived in a western desert state we had the same problem. After an infrequent rain the contract letter carrier would continue to drive the way she normally did on the wet, muddy ground. She made a deep rut. After repairing it several times I made a final repair by filling the rut with rocks. The rocks were carefully chosen to be just small enough to drive over but large enough that she had to slow down BEFORE she got to the former rut that she created.
As a mailman I can guarantee you it was a walking route and the mail carrier is trying to change it to a driving route and this guy didn’t put the mail box down on the street like they asked him. Not saying the carrier is right for this just saying what I think happened. Not all mail carriers are like this my route is 22 miles on foot and my customers love me for it the give me water food etc. my boss says I should start making new residents but boxes on the street and I say no this is better for our customers.
When we bought our home in rural VA, it was new, no mailbox. The wife looked up postal regs for rural routes which specified how far off the paved edge the box was to be placed, the height of the box from the ground, and minimum size. She carefully measured, and set the box. Carrier came by and told her SHE wanted the box moved to "THIS" position... And wouldn't deliver our mail until the wife dug up the box and moved it. Wife took pictures, and the regs to the postmaster, who ordered the rural carrier to deliver our mail. She refused. We got a new carrier. The placement of the box allowed the carrier to pull fully off the road in a blind curve. She wanted it moved closer to the road so half her car stayed IN the road... In the BLIND curve.
I also live on a rural county road. Maybe 10 houses per mile, and many like mine have 400' long driveways. Had a carrier that refused to bring packages to any house on our street. If it didn't fit in the mailbox, she'd drop it on the side of the road and leave. While buying stamps at the post office, I asked the lady if that was normal. Turns out the head postmaster overheard me, introduced himself and took down my information. He promised that would never happen again. Carrier got fired that day! 23 years later and not an issue since.
The wife is a Karen when they complain about small petty things. There is nothing wrong with standing up yourself when yiu follow the rules and you are in the right. You are FAR from a Karen.
Happened on my own property. FedEx and UPS would drive through my property to get to houses on the other side. We made multiple complaints but nothing happened. Well, my brother and I went out to the spot where they would drive through and we filled in that spot with nails and jagged concrete slabs. My neighbor owned the other side of land they used to get to those houses and he filled in the spot on his property with a mound of dirt 5 feet high. Needless to say, they STOPPED driving through our combined properties.
Fed Ex,UPS and the Postal service all like to use my driveway to turn around in because the end of my block is not a through street. It is annoying since they sometimes leave tire tracks on my driveway.
I don't get the grass thing. It's JUST grass. Doesn't interest me in the least. At least a plant or flowers has payoff easily and quickly. Grass you can do anything to it and still get nothing back. Waste of my time
My wife is a retired mail carrier. People need to put the box where the postal service wants them at the correct height or the postal service can refuse service. I don’t think she did anything like this. However it is a tough job.

Billmakie; You are correct. People are supposed to contact the postmaster to get a location for their mailboxes. You wouldn’t believe some of the rules that the mail carriers are supposed to follow. Like they are not to put their vehicles in reverse. Good luck getting out of a South Dakota snow bank.
The mail person has 500 houses to get through. If they have to get out every time, It'll be 300 houses. You want to wait the extra day or two for your mail?
@@madmanuel001 So what did they do years ago without mail trucks, they walked to each house! I just came from my post office after numerous complaints about our lazy carrier. She continuously leaves over sized pkgs. in our mailbox instead of getting out of her truck and putting them on our porch. Now I’m not in Detroit( anymore) but in Florida, it’s been raining everyday here and pkgs get wet because she doesn’t close the mail box door! If mail carriers are too lazy to get out of truck then they have no business being a carrier for the U.S. government which our taxes pay for.
In our rural community where we have streetside mailboxes, they are literally beside the street. I am not sure what the issue is there, but anywhere I have seen rural delivery the mailbox is located at the curb line. The truck pulls up, the carrier places mail in box and leaves. They do not drive across sidewalks or yards to do it.
As an Amazon driver, I'd park curb-side, hit my flashers, get angry stares and sometimes the finger from motorist stopped behind me, deliver the parcel,, and then go on my merry way.
Sidewalks are for pedestrians not motor vehicles! This is dangerous. Five years.. this man has had to put up with this reckless behavior. He certainly needs a lawyer..USPS needs to be held accountable..These mail carriers certainly know what they are doing to this poor man..they seem to be rebels..ignoring all the yard signs and cones. No one should have their property damaged over and over.
When you graduate third grade, read the postal regulations governing the idiot homeowners mailbox - - not a lot of pictures, so you may have to wait for the comic book edition
Build a nice picket fence of PVC posts filled with concrete and rebar. Some time ago, a man living in a rural area had teens drive down the rod in front of his house, roping mailboxes and driving off with them. Finally getting tired of it, he used a pipe filled with concrete as a base for his mailbox. He came out one morning and found the door of a car lying on the ground near his mailbox. Never had another problem with his mailbox.
I've dealt with USPS on mailbox and delivery issues, and I can tell you they are a spiteful bunch when it comes to this stuff. They will be intentionally difficult and ignorant with refusal to accept any corrections attempted to be made. I went round and round with them over a box height "issue" complaint. The box height was well within their specifications, but the carrier decided since he switched to a Subaru that the box was too high and wanted it lowered well below regulation height to accommodate the lower vehicle. My box, not unlike many others, doesn't just go up or down on a whim, and I am not tearing the stonework out just to lower or raise my box 4 inches every time somebody decides to get a different vehicle. Keep in mind it had been at the same regulation height for 20 years and had been delivered to by several different carriers over the years without complaint. I finally got the postmaster to come out after 3 months of BS and visually see the box and show him the measurements to convince him there was never an issue and stop withholding my mail. Ridiculous.
It's your responsibility unless it's owned or maintained by the USPS . This is technically a "free service" and you don't pay box rent. The specifications aren't set in stone and can be dictated by the contractor of the route with the backing of a postmaster. It does sound like your carrier is a bit of a tool. I have a duel role contract and use a full-size 4WD pickup for a box route between my transportation duties. Once I explain that, most people get it and comply. Also, we have a snow build-up that customers sometimes don't address so the boxes get lower as the snow builds up.. I've had a few that refuse, and they just don't get their mail until they comply with PS Form 4056, usually item " 5 . I dislike doing that and prefer to work things out. But honestly I have over 200 boxes with a window of 1.5 hours to complete and don't have a lot of time. "PS form 4056: The Postal Service may withdraw service to a delivery point if a customer does not provide a suitable mail receptacle in the postal-approved location for the delivery of mail after being so notified by local officials by PS Form 1507" "Action must be taken to correct the problems or risk having your mail service suspended until the problems are resolved".
This is a problem that needs to be resolved. You can see by looking down the sidewalk that all the mailboxes are along the walk, not the road, so this apparently used to be a walking route. The route itself has probably been absorbed into other routes and now too big to be a walking route so the drivers are using the vehicles. The street is very busy and a mail truck stopping at every mailbox would be a traffic hazard, so obviously, the route needs to be broken down back to a walking route but the post office is unwilling to do that. The fact that the folks at the post office won't even talk to the reporter tells me the problem is with management, not the drivers. The drivers are probably just doing what they're told by their management.
where I live everyone's mailboxes re along the road and no one has issues with it. how is it a hazard to stop at the mailboxes at each stop, they just put their lights on and people learn to be cautious and courteous to the mail truck as they get the right of way, just like a school bus or parked police.

most mail carriers aren't as lazy as the one in this story. it's odd that all of the mailboxes aren't along the road - probably due to people hitting them driving too fast for the road (or on their phone)
@@Scotty_in_Ohio They said in the video that the post office response was that boxes on the streetside were a "safety hazard". As if driving on the sidewalk isn't a safety hazard.

In my last neighborhood, the mail carriers would walk directly from door to door, across lawns and plantings to the point that there were furrows in all the lawns. When the clipboard carrying monitors were observing, the monitors stayed on the sidewalk, while the carriers continued to walk across lawns for the shortest path.

Your wrong. Not sure you are an actual postal carrier. That is obviously not a dismount. It is curbline delivery. The customer must be forced to place their mailbox on the curb so they can pull up on the street.
@aarons8295 who are you talking too? Maybe actually listen to the news clip so you can actually figure out that the customer DID MOVE HIS BOX TO THE STREET and they are refusing delivery. I'm absolutely a carrier, been a regular for 4 years on my current route, with is a mixed bag of curbside, dsmt and foot.
If all the mailboxes are like that then doing so would add a lot of extra time to his route.
@@MrPAULONEAL Then that will be one of the routes that cannot be done quickly and the postal office has to plan schedules accordingly. I think they're just being petty at this point.

Is it likely this route was once delivered by a mail carrier on foot and they switched to a vehicle?
Never heard of the USPS driving on sidewalks for "safety" 👀

Most of the mailboxes there are up past the sidewalks…and they are allowed to drive up to the mailbox to deliver the mail. If the mail carriers can not safely deliver to mailboxes along the road, then it needs to be made a walking route. On the other side of the street, you can see that the mailboxes are on the houses and it is a walking route.

There are times, when you are not in a good mood, that you have certain thoughts that take you out of your normal state. This shows that even if your situation is not pleasant, some of your thoughts may still come from the Holy Spirit.
It is not the case that when you are convinced, all your thoughts are sent by Satan; If that is true, when will you be able to move into a positive state?

The Post Office told us we will need to DRIVE to the nearest Post Office (4 miles from us) to get our mail because putting mail on our porch was unsafe. Got our City Councilor involved, not to mention the Mayor and finally our State Representative for area. It took almost 5 months but we finally got the mailbox replaced.

@@TheRealScooterGuy I think he's saying to go stand infront of the mail truck to make it not safe and suddenly more illegal... on paper
However, the Postal Service cannot legally be billed for any traffic violation fines incurred by its employees.' He added that there is no legal system in place to transfer liability from the Postal Service to an employee, an issue because these tickets were the result of traffic cameras, not police stops with tickets handed to individuals."
So, if a traffic ticket is issued under an owner's liability law (like traffic cameras), the USPS apparently doesn't have to pay; but, if the ticket is issued to the driver, it's a valid ticket that the driver is responsible for.
That's called a lazy ass postal delivery person. If it's too dangerous to stop, then you park around the corner and walk the mail out for that area. Rinse and repeat.

Why, the postal truck was not on his property. It was on public easement. Anything from the sidewalk towards the road is public easement and is not the property of the homeowner.
@@snowflakehunter You are incorrect. Just because it is an easement doesn't mean it is not the home owner's property.

I've had my share of battles with the USPS for highly suspected internal theft of my mail. I've followed all their procedures on filing claims. You think any one of them got resolved? Bottom line is the USPS doesn't give a f*ck. I feel this dude's pain and certainly understand his frustrations. At least in my case, their arrogance and flippant attitudes of my concerns further angered me more.
My mail carrier likes to slam your mailbox door if she's having a bad day or if she doesn't like you,or is mad at you for some stupid reason, totally inconsiderate.
Mailboxes are too far from edge of road are NOT in US Postal CODE/regulations !!!
He needs to contact the USPS Office of Inspector General to file a complaint. They're a separate agency that oversees and investigates wrongdoing by the USPS
Most mail carriers walk their route when a sidewalk is in place, driving on sidewalks is a dangerous for public.
most mail carriers aren't as lazy as the one in this story. it's odd that all of the mailboxes aren't along the road - probably due to people hitting them driving too fast for the road (or on their phone)
@@Scotty_in_Ohio They said in the video that the post office response was that boxes on the streetside were a "safety hazard". As if driving on the sidewalk isn't a safety hazard.
And here I am watching this knowing that the USPS never chooses to close my mailbox. They just let it sit wide open for the whole neighborhood to see and they couldn’t care less when my shit gets stolen. 4 times now.
Absolutely lazy and stupid behavior of these mail carriers. All so they dont gotta walk 10 bloody feet.
Even worse is then when he compromised to make it as easy as possible for them while not driving on his grass, they retaliate by illegally denying him mail delivery.
As a current city carryTHIS IS INSANE!!! AND AGAINST ALL RULES WE ARE TAUGHT! THEY NEED TO FIRE THIS GUY
It was a woman. The reporter said "she wouldn't respond". Nice job assuming its a guy though. This is the result of feminism lol. She even said it, you mentally blocked it out & ran with your bias. Yikes.
It was a female driver remember…
and against the law.
When we find he was the Postmaster's bully in high school 🤣🤣🤣🤣😆
