    and yet 11 years later this is amazing, John is just feeling the music. He may not look excited but you know in his head he's having that "bedroom rockstar" moment we've all had. His playing speaks for himself, he doesn't need words

    It is all subjective I know. I do agree Reni is playing it more straight-up on his comeback. I still believe he's got his legendary Swing...and still very much got his groove. And for a cat who ain't drummed live for damn near 20 year he still wipes the floor with most of the competition. Why more straight-up drumming? I think its to do with Squire's more rock and bluesy approach than the psychedelic-funk. The old speedy jazz Swing would've thrown the whole thing off. That's my theory, anyway.

    Reni is in my top 3 all-time drummer list (with Bonham & Porcaro). And for me the biggest thrill was that so many people never got to see the beatmaster Reni in full-flow & now they were going to see what all the fuss was about. And boy do I think he delivered. I never for one second think I'm watching a different drummer. Some of the uploaded footage I found still brings a wee tear of joy to the eye...and I can't stop playing it. For me, Ten Storey & Shoot you Down are the only disappointments.

    When I see them jamming like this, it makes me ponder why they weren't huge in the US of A? They had all the ingredients necessary to be a truly massive band over there. I suppose they didn't really try when it comes down to it, more about a lack of exposure over there than people not 'getting' them. They say it takes a lot of repeated heavy touring across the lower 48 to really get anywhere and they didn't do that, even at their height of their fame in the UK they weren't doing big tours. It was more about creating spectacular one off gigs.
    Really glad that I got to see them a fair few times back then. From a few hundred at gigs before they became popular in 1987/8, to a few thousand in university halls when the debut LP came out, to the seminal Blackpool show [when I bet 75% of the crowd were 'on one'] to Ali Paly and SI. Some of the best gigs I've ever been to, the closest I got to witnessing something like Beatlemania I reckon.
    I can remember them playing an absolute storming set at Leeds Poly in '89. At the end of the gig the crowd went absolutely wild, they were the best I've ever seen them that night, truly mind blowing. Mani was that excited at the end of the IATR encore that he literally jumped into John's arms in the middle of the stage. I've seen a lot of bands over the years, but when everything clicked with the Roses nobody could touch them, both in terms of musicianship, the quality of their songs and the atmosphere at the gigs.

    • @grizcuz
      @grizcuz 5 лет назад +1

      @Ronnie Mccoll Absolutely nothing pretentious about what I wrote. I was only wondering aloud about why they weren't a big band in the states. I also think you need to understand what the word 'pretentious' means before accusing somebody of it. I've never commented on a RUclips video wanting or expecting likes either. This was an old video and I've only commented on it relatively recently, that's not the way to attract attention or likes. I couldn't even remember what I wrote before your comment. I was probably drunk or high AF when I wrote the original comment and that's why it's a mini essay.
