"The fire was stupid. Putting Vila on guard was suicidal. What's the matter, is staying alive too complicated for you?" Superb writing. Loved Paul, still do x
An excellent tribute to a wonderful actor. I am rewatching B7, and although the special effects and props seem dated, the show was always character driven anyway, so those things were less important. Paul Darrow was outstanding as Avon, the way he delivered those lines was something special and quite mesmerising. He also seems to have been a thoroughly nice man who enjoyed meeting fans and had no problem at all with being known as Avon for the rest of his life. A very special person and very much missed.
Rest in power Paul ♥️🌈 You were my first love when I was eleven years old. Rest now and finally have the peace you prayed for. You're a guardian angel now 💓💓
The Liberator bridge, Avon has invented a device which should prevent the ship from being detected by all but the closest range scanners and direct sight. The crew put it to use and evade six Federation pursuit ships. Vila: “They missed us, Avon’s gadget works” Blake (having questioned relying on Avon’s device) “I never doubted it for a moment.” Blake (to Avon with concern) “Is something wrong?” Avon “it just occurred to me, that as the description of a highly sophisticated piece of technological equipment, “Avon’s gadget works” seems to lack a certain style.”
This compilation video is a beautiful tribute to an awesome actor in an epic role in an iconic series, and the tremendous lines written for his character. Well done.
Avon had the best lines in the series, and Paul Darrow delivered them with aplomb every time. Even all these years later he makes it easy to overlook B7's flaws.
Forget Eton and Harrow, and the marchers of Jarrow, just pack up your troubles in your old wheel barrow. When the streets are narrow, and your dinner's just marrow, he is strong like bow, he is fast like an arrow. He's the leader of the farrow. He can fly like a sparrow. There's only one Avon, and that's PAUL DARROW!
One of my fave quotes is, I forget what episode- think it may be Sand , "And she got it, didn't she? Your sympathy, I mean"... Perfect at those dry witty asides...
A very fine actor 👏 I genuinely wish he got more varied work after Blake's 7 because he had so much to offer. He and Jacqueline Pearce did get type cast a bit. They were brilliant and in my childhood I adored Blake's 7, it was an important feature in my childhood 😢
AVon had some a great lines in a great script and the late Paul Darrow made it even better an excelent actor on screen and on stage. was lucky enough to see him playing a cardinal in a play at the hippodrome many years ago.
Rewatching B7 after so many years and while time hasn't been kind to the special effects I have to say every scene with Avon is a joy to watch (times 2 if Villa is there as his side kick), the dialog, the delivery and (once per season I think) that smile. So happy to find that Paul narrated audio books too so my audible account is about to take a battering.
For me he made Blakes 7, I didn’t like Blake too goody goody and pompous. Darrow’s Avon was a real anti hero in the true sense and we will all miss him. Last I heard years ago that there was to be a B7 film with him in it ... RIP...
The tragedy was that they actually worked very well together. Indeed, they most successful either man ever had was when they were working together - together they destroyed Star One, bringing the Federation to its knees, and kept an alien invasion at bay until other forces could arrive to repel it. But apart they were both failures...
I loved the banter between Tarrant and Avon when Tarrant was bullying Villa. Tarrant retorted to Avon: "Don't make me laugh!" Avon's deadpan and chilling repost: "Then you'll die ... laughing." What a brilliant character played by the perfect man for it. Special effects are irrelevant when there are such great characters.
So much more dramatic and engaging than the Marvel dreg of endless Superhero movies that plagued today's modern audiences. Alongside classic Who, this wonderful series proofed the maxim that characterisation is so much more important than special effects. Having said that this was real enjoyable to watch with the improved visuals. Paul Darrow's face in those final seconds though is some of the best acting I have seen.
He made the serious really. Blake was good too but there wasn’t room for two big egos on the Liberator. Jacqueline Pearse, and Stephen Grief were also excellent. I think Villa grounded the characters and he was quite funny. Stephen Pacey was pretty good but was seriously overshadowed by Avon in the final series. Avon did touch on the greatness of Richard Burton at times. Even a dodgy script was given full treatment by him. It was a wonderful series and you can really get lost in it although it does have its share of flaws. I’d still watch it over Star Trek or any American space show. Coming from England it was a kind of Robin Hood in space!
Its the cutting cynicism that made his character. Avon was so cynical, yet underneath that cynicism, dark and virulent as it was, their were those flickers of idealism, hence his escape with Blake.
Loved Avon's character, even though Paul said his part was a really, nasty piece of work. I loved his voice also. Gareth Thomas eventually decided to make Blake a bad guy too.I was quite surprised to see that in the last ever episode. Anyway, Rest in Peace Paul.
Actually, Blake wasn't a bad guy in the last episode. He was only pretending to be a bounty hunter so that he could recruit for a new rebellion. Avon didn't realise this and thought he had been betrayed. That was the tragedy of what ensued.
I remember Gareth giving an interview on the show, and he said he decided to make Blake a rebel. It certainly left me guessing if Avon managed to survive the final scene.
The show was called Blakes 7 and was meant to be a show about Blake and his crew but I think it became clearer as the show progressed that Paul Durrow was a much stronger actor and Avon was a much better character so they switched him to the forefront. No offence to Gareth Thomas he was a good as anyone else on the show.
His character had such clever comments. That's why the ultimate ending was disappointing...why would this guy who seemed two steps ahead of everyone all series suddenly not see the truth?
What was it he said to Vila? Cant quote it precisely but it was something like this: "You have a right to your opinion but it is your opinion that we have a right to it as well that I find irritating." I think of this often when people are pontificating on matters with which I disagree. Paul Darrow and Avon, greatly missed.
"I am not expendable, I'm not stupid, and I'm not going."
"The fire was stupid. Putting Vila on guard was suicidal. What's the matter, is staying alive too complicated for you?" Superb writing. Loved Paul, still do x
Rest In Peace Paul Darrow, one of the greatest character actors in British history. Sorely missed.
Avon was by far the best character in the show. Paul did a fantastic job. RIP.

Yea but Dr Whos were shabby too.
The way they ended this was brilliant, you would never survive forever, especially a psyhopath running the show!
Unforgettable Avon. We miss you, Paul.
I loved him throughout my childhood. I can't believe that he's gone. 0
We all wish we were as cool as Avon! RIP Paul Darrow
His most memorable quote for me "No good deed goes unpunished" RIP Paul Darrow. AVON!

@@rowdyreidgirl My Sisters too! She loved Avon's arrogance. 😉👍

@@Ericwvb2 Epic! 😉👍
Have to love that Avon smile at 3.00. Pleased with himself and at the same time like a wolf grinning at you.
Paul was a legend; what a voice, what a presence. A talent as good as any of our screen legends.
Saddened to hear he is gone…he really made the show superb and funny, still is today.
Love your Tom Baker pic.
Avon, one of the best sci-fi goody-baddies ever written!
The late great Paul Darrow ...Avon was a legendary character...
I really could not see B7 been as good without Avon Vila and their arch-enemy Servalan herself they made B7 so awesomely good and a legend

Wonderful. Such a terrific character, so marvellously played, and still so very much missed.
I loved his character, and line delivery.
Best character in Blake 7 and easily one of the best characters in the history of sci fi
a good tribute thank you

Coolest man on to in the late 70s and early 80s.

Blake was also very weak as a leader and he really didn't understand people and what motivates them!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Servalan and Avon together at last.
Long may they rule!

He was my favourite.
Watching the B7 re-runs on Forces TV, underrated actor.
Its the cutting cynicism that made his character. Avon was so cynical, yet underneath that cynicism, dark and virulent as it was, their were those flickers of idealism, hence his escape with Blake.
For 40 years I've used variations of Avon's quip about being sentimental about money. Because I happen to be very sentimental about my money.
Paul was made to play that part. He was supposed to play Avon
"The cold lasts eight and a half years" ---- "Does it support intelligent life?" ---- "Of course not, we're talking about Chicago"

I finished re watching this and I wish he is still alive
My God I never knew he actual has died
"You have an army of five...and HIM" lol.. Star Trek had the budgets, Blake Seven had the actors/writers.
Avon made B7, and Darrow's Coriolanus was intense, unforgettable.

Blakes 7 was strange to watch first time around back in the 70s you thought it was about Blake but it turned out to be centred around Avon instead
Good ol' Avon.
