The Cooper Cougars defeat Richardson Lake Highlands 24-21 in overtime on December 13, 1996 at Texas Stadium to advance to the state championship game for the first time since 1967. Tied at 21-21 entering overtime, the Cougars recover a fumble on the first play to eventually kick the game winning field goal.
