How To Match Patina!

- Patina is HOT!!! It's such a cool look, its easy to maintain, but it happens only in nature. Right? WRONG!!! Vice Grip Garage has patina protectors, Eastwood has Patina preserver, I wrote a book on how to preserve and protect, even create authentic patina... it's possible! I show you how I matched 50 year old faded original paint on a 75 Bronco! Check out my buddy Jon Melton at / @nashvilleearlybronco for some more great content!

This was such a fun project!!! I definitely want to to a full vehicle at some point. I've got a video course at paintucation.cinevee.com/ Check it out! It shows more great PATINA techniques!!
Thanks for doing this Kevin! It turned out great!
Thanks for smashing your Bronco so I could have a cool painting project! LOL!!
Got Nashville Early Bronco linked in my description! :)
On an episode of Trucks you did this by painting a couple layers starting with the base color (primer) then added another color (base actual) then sanded through to bring out the first (primer) color. This way, as the tailgate ages the red oxide will be rubbed off bringing out the green then eventually the light gray sealer.
John is planning a full restoration and paintjob of this truck... this w as just so the gate didn't stand out bigtime.
Best place to learn about painting...
Definitely an art form and you did a great job! One of my favorite examples of a patina'd vehicle is Joe Martin's old Ford shop truck. Just beautiful!
Always great to watch someone as passionate as you doing what they love
Great video
his stuff and knowledge amaze me smart man when it come to painting and body work
Thanks Danny!
Great video, great info. Thanks buddy!
Heck Yeah!!!! Got a grille project coming up you might like too. :)
@@paintucation this one turned out great, got take the full Paintucation course and give it a try. Maybe I'll start with Eddy s truck 🤣😂
I think this is really nice. I am curious why you didn't push the dents out cause they don't look horrible. Frankly I would have left the tail gate as is. Dents are just more patina 😀
That was Jon's call... The gate was very rusty and he was going to change it even before the accident.
lucky to have that system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Should have done it to Nature Way put the brown on first and then the green and then sand off the green
I'm not old enough yet 2 appreciate patina however, I do appreciate eyesores such as myself I thought about creating a RV car club called
"the Eyesores" & just park in front of homeowners houses until our tires get chalked
You’re the coolest Camaro guy ever lol
Smartest I have ever seen.... And forgiving!
That was great 👍
Figure you would've used the sand and coffee ground trick?
Gonna have to look that up! Thanks! KT
You should of done it like factory. Red oxide. Patina thi paint with a wet sand thru. Would look better
I might try this on the Wimbledon white replacement hood on the Dimond blue highboy I’ve been working on 🤔
It's a fun process. Practice on some white paper to get your rust-tones right. You could even use rattle can red oxide primer for some of it.
Interesting approach. My initial thought was to paint the red oxide first, spray the green over it then abrade the green away to simulate what happened in nature. This approach isn’t something that I would have come to on my own.
Never seen a good patina match and probably never will.
I'd not put the tape on your leg or body suit to dull the adhesive, as it will pick up any dust, first, hair, or other particles you do not want in your paint.
Heard Chef... but in this case, we're back-stying it so I wasn't worried about any trash it might pick up... Good tip though! Thanks!
I love it
Great video Kevin. Just finished my Paintucation University course work and cannot wait for better weather to get started on my own project. Just a question for your next Q and A video. Really enjoy those as well. How would you estimate materials needed for a complete paint job on a 69 Plymouth Road Runner using a base coat, clear coat including epoxy primer/sealer and enough hi-build polyester primer to do at least 2 blocking sessions over the entire car. I plan to strip the car to bare metal both inside and out. Have to start planning for materials purchases. Thanks
Kevin's rule of 7... 7 oz per coat, per panel. That's sprayable/mixed materials. Count your panels, then multiply by 7, then factor in how many coats. It's a rough estimate that leans high, but it gets you close. Your TDS sheets sometimes tell how many sq feet you can spray, I find it's 600-800 sq feet per gallon. It's more math, but measure your panels and grab the calculator. That will get you a fair estimate as well, it's just harder to do since some of the panels aren't square. Hope this helps!
@@paintucation Fantastic. That's the info I was looking for. It will give me a good starting point. Really loved the Paintucation University work. Just couldn't stop watching. Great work.
24:47 That looks terrible. The red oxide match is HORRIBLE. It's PINK!
I'm not too keen on the green color match either. It's quite a bit off.
Patina................RUST...............WHY would I want to have a car with RUST on it.....
Silly!! you have no imagination! LOL!
Patina is horrible! Cancer is also naturally occurring. Get it looking like it just rolled out the factory or better!
