The problem with self improvement is it can never be fully measured which makes it the ultimate grift. I hate those quotes "fufill your potential" and "become your best self". Truth is you'll never really know if you've achieved all you can in life, self improvement is just a cope and the people doing it are just on an ego trip trying to pretend they're better than others.
I see nothing wrong with self improvement if it actually works for you. Most people never try to become better and thats the real problem. Too many flawed people making life miserable for everyone around them.
As you improve, you only increase the overall competition. You greatly diminish the enjoyment people get from life. Every time you don't improve yourself, you always feel guilty. The self-improvement movement comes to such a point that you cannot find time to live without improving yourself. Now it gets to the point where you can't survive a day without improving yourself. The act of self-improvement collectively makes life even more unbearable. It decreases total happiness as well as increases pain. We would be wasting ourselves in meaningless competition.
I agree - the main goal of self improvement at least in my opinion is to better yourself. Relationships, social life, gym, career the things you can fix. It’s about others as much as it is about you. At the end of the day you will need to interact with human beings and to get the best out of it unfortunately you’ll have to play the game to reap the rewards

It's more of a self-development than "improvement". In my language it's called self-development. I've always found it bizarre about English language. Like, literally being developed doesn't mean being good. I mean, growing muscle and being financially savvy does not reflect on a person's character and kindness at all. So how is this am improvement? It's just developing oneself, actualizing oneself etc. I enjoy studying free courses on coursera, they make me smarter, more confident, more educated. But it doesn't necessarily make me a good person.
