Another thing I just learned to be aware of is related to the settings in Silhouette Studio. Others may be aware of this already but it took me forever to clue in. Watching this video got me looking more closely at the depth my blade was set to vs the actual settings in Studio. I realized that while I had my blade depth set to 6 in the "Cut Lines" settings, it was only going to 4 for the real cut while the test cut was going to the appropriate depth of 6. The problem wasn't that it wasn't registering taps though - there were only 4 taps attempted. So the blade was set right according to the number of taps, just not what I had in my Cut Lines settings. What I finally clued into was that I was using the layers to indicate which layer to use to cut and hadn't changed the material listed there. Then down below in the "Cut Lines" section I set my material and used some preset settings. So for the test cut it used the settings in the lower "Cut Lines" section which was 6, but for the main cut it was using the layer settings which was for a totally different kind of material that had a preset blade depth of 4. I made the appropriate adjustment to the material for the layer and now it's all fine. Sorry a bit long winded but I am hoping that this may help someone else!
I tried all of these solutions. I took out the blade and reinserted it but it was changing from the reset of 0. I finally restarted my machine and that did the trick. I learned so good tricks from this video. Thanks Melissa.
All I can say is thank you Jesus for me praying and finding you here on RUclips. I almost gave my Cameo 4 plus away and was about to purchase another one until I seen this video. Thank you for sharing these tips. I had to change my cut settings and I had to make sure my blade was flush down in the machine. Thank you again for this video!
My machine was etching instead of cutting. When you described how the auto blade presses down automatically to change the dial, i realized my cutting mat was over that tiny hole so it wasn't pressing down, it stayed at 0. THANK YOU!!
Yay! You fixed my problem. I'm so happy I could cry! I was nearly ready to scrap my whole project, then I came across your video. Thank you for recommending a force of 14 for HTV. Heaven sent information.
Thank you so much. I was having trouble cutting through a sticker sheet, with the blade only piercing through the adhesive layer and not making it all the way through the backing. I was so stressed as I am new to the cameo, so I went and bought a 2mm manual blade. Your first solution worked for me, all I had to do was insert the auto blade in correctly and it cut through the sticker sheet entirely. So I can now sell stickers!! Thanks again ❤
Melissa I have a new one for you... I tried everything you suggested before realized my BRAND NEW autoblade was defective. The blade itself is turned slightly to the side so it was never cutting cleanly and rarely all the way through. Thanks for these great tips. I'm learning a lot!
thank you so much. I've hit my head against the wall for days trying to figure out why my blade wasn't cutting properly. It was the Lock feature on the machine. It's not super clear what that it and how that works in the instructions. I thought it meant pushing the blade down far enough so that it 'locked' into place. You might suggest to the tech writers that they be clearer about this and that one has to actually push the front of the mechanism towards the blade to 'lock' it into place.... yay thanks so so much for this video.
Thank you so much, I was going nuts because my blade was cutting to deep until I placed it correctly in the blade housing & then adjusted the force & depth.
Thank you so much! I was able to take that small piece off of my blade and found a tiny piece of vinyl. At your recommendation I also changed the force from 10 to 14 and the difference was amazing. Thank you again!
Another great tutorial! I was able to use the information provided here to fix my problem, even though my problem wasn't exactly one of the things described. The blade was fine, but when it was tapping, it only reset to 0, it wasn't correctly changing the blade depth. Looking closely, only the first tap was going in the hole. The subsequent taps for changing to the set depth was tapping between the 2 holes, instead of in the hole. I powered off my machine and turned it on again, which re-set so that the taps happened in the right spot.
Thank you for the info about the reset hard tap! This info was gold. I was confused about how it resets back to zero but now that I know that there is two different kind of taps makes it make sense to me. Thank you.
Thanks for doing this video. I have used a Portrait for years and recently bought a Cameo 4. After a few uses the blade stopped working. Got it working again thanks to your tip about making it think it was not an auto blade. You saved my day!
Thank you! I didn't even know what that container was that will old my old blades! I still want to get comfortable with my new machine & autoblade but right now I have a project that HAS to get done!

I was trying to use my portrait 3 and was wondering why it's not cutting at all. Like I tried 5 times and was looking at the blade. it's not coming down. And so I tried what you said about the first prob. apparently it's NOT LOCKED IN correctly. Thank you so much! It's my first time using my machine. LOL.
NO JOKE same. First, it wasn't reading the registration lines, then not cutting, I finally read the user guide and found my blade was not locked into place. Now I just have to get better sticker paper that won't curl up, Its never-ending.
Try using a brayer to adhere your sticker paper to your mat, it's super helpful for good cuts! www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2019/12/why-and-when-to-use-brayer-silhouette.html

Got my Cameo 4 in Jan of this year. And had nothing but problems with the auto blade. All of the above did not work, so got a ratchet blade. My husband got me a Cameo 3 for Mothers day and I LOVE that auto blade. No problems with the 3 blade like I had with the 4 blade.
I bought a used Portrait 3 that wasn't cutting very well, turned out there was a lot of debris inside the autoblade. I had already ordered a new autoblade. The macine didn't have the tool, but I did order one from Silhouette. I'm pondering getting a Cameo, but my printer only does up to 8.5x14, so no real need for a larger cutter.
Thank you so much. My autoblade broke and needed another one ASAP and the extra autoblade I got from amazon wasn't cutting at all either 😠BUT I did have a brand new ratchet blade that I never used on my very first Cameo 1. So I went back into my Cameo 4 supplies and saw that I had the black adaptor (which I had no clue what to do with) you showed in your video and it WORKED PERFECTLY!!! Thank you so much again!! 🤗
Thanks. #3 did it for me. I knew that but when I cut and there are small areas I always check to see that they didn't get pulled out. If they did, I see if they are still hanging around. If not, I clean out the inside of the blade carrier. I guess a couple tiny pieces got away from me. I use Oracal 651 and had to set the blade depth at 2 and force at 13. This new cameo 4 is awesome. I used a basic cameo (1) for many years. Now....how do I know when I need to replace the blade? I run it for about an hour a day (cutting time). With the autoblade I have cut back on adjusting time tremendously but I think my blade needs to be replaced soon. Had it about 2 weeks. How will I know for sure?
Thank You Melissa!👏 I was in the middle of a cut and it just stop cutting the depth I had set it at. I knew you'd have the answer, so I popped over to your channel. Yup! I cleaned the blade and cleaned out those little channels you mention in this video. They were full of glitter from glitter paper! It's all clean and working just fine again! You're Awesome 👌 👏 👍!
thanks for the video, i wish my issue was here! Just bought a brand new sihouette studio 3. the blade was working fine this morning and then suddenly out of no where its not cutting anything, after so much trial, effort, and going through anything i could to get it working.
Oh my god I just purchased this and ran through almost 2 vinyl rolls scratching and ruining it struggling for the past week and a half trying to figure out why it wouldn’t cut!!! I had it positioned right but didn’t know I had to push it in to LOCK it just tried it it actually worked design is horrible but still learning how to cut correctly lol
I just got the machine and had the Portrait which is different...This info has been very helpful cause I did try to cut and it was not cutting all the way thru and after seeing this video I had the blade in all wrong...lol...Thanks!!!!
Hi Melissa, I have Avery adhesive laminate and HTVront sticker paper. I need a depth of 7, force of 20, and speed 3 to cut through the materials, sometimes I need multiple passes! I read that depth is too much, but I cannot get it to cut through on lower depth and force. Can you please give me some advice? Thank you for your tutorial! :)
First cut was perfect, but the others won't even cut thru plain cardstock. I followed all your advice so I guess now i go buy a new auto blade. I just got the cameo 4 plus and was so excited, now i dont know.
Thank you so much, this was super helpful! The only thing I'm struggling with now is figuring out which setting I should use. I make stickers but I laminate the sticker paper so I'm not sure what material I should put?
Thank you! Was ready to go buy a new machine! It was a tapping issue.. the hole was full of crap and didn't tap correctly so I was cutting at 5 depth instead of 2. :)
Thanks for the video. Is there a way to cut a square within a thick material (for example 1.5mm card or 2mm leather) I think my cameo 4 pro is upset when i try and make it do 90 degree angles. If it is possible what blade should i be using?
Yes you can cut a square. Try turning on the segment line overcut option so it picks the blade up at corners instead of trying to rotate. Here's how to find and use that option www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2018/08/best-silhouette-cut-settings-for-paper.html
@SilhouetteSchool thanks for the reply, really useful to know. I'm using the kraft 3mm blade, and it's trying to convince me that I might need to add these loops, I assume the loops are to help stop the blade from getting stuck at sharp angles. But the overcut system seems much easier

My original Cameo just bit the dust after 8 years. I'm ungrading to the bluetooth Cameo 4. I'm just here getting the lowdown on the auto blade before it arrives. Stupid question, why don't they just correct the setting in the Silhoutte software, Ugg...rhetorical question really...but, UGH. God love you for putting up with us. 🙂
Thanks alot my blade is not cutting and even not changing the levels am opend the blade as per second factor its jammed with dust i cleaned properly now its working properly once again thank u so much ( i thought need to by new blade u saved my 3000/- rs)
Thanks for the help when I replaced my auto blade with a new one I haven’t been able to get it to work. I actually have gone through 2 new auto blades with no help on getting them to work. I don’t have any trouble using the ratchet blade but I do like the convenience of the auto blade. Guess I just got a bad batch of blades - unfortunately I ordered 4 of the auto blades when I got my Cameo 4. You always give such great advice! On another note I haven’t been able to connect via Bluetooth since I got my machine - I went through the steps on the Silhouette site no help - any helpful tips on that? I had no trouble with my cameo 3.
I literally just bought the Cameo 4 today and set it up to continue cutting something I was working on when my Cameo 2 would no longer hold a blade. I sent the same design through like 4 times, with this new blade/new machine, used the Card Stock - heavy textured setting, increased the blade from 3 to 4, and put the force from 30 to 33. It STILL wouldn't cut through the card stock all the way. I kept checking the auto blade was installed all the way, and kept checking it. There was no rhyme or reason ... and after doing it 4 times, I'm still having to hand cut out the rest of the design with an exacto knife. I'm aggravated!
Hey there! I suggest going through the full troubleshooting blog post here: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2019/11/silhouette-cameo-4-autoblade-wont-cut-5.html
Thank you for making this video! I couldn't for my life understand how it couldn't cut through my address label sticky paper even with blade on 8. Turned out the instructions never mentioned the "lock & load" part. I put in the blade, but never locked it, so it got constantly pushed up at the very beginning 😅 Ooops...
Hi, thank you for this video. Do you know how to use a replacement auto blade that does not have the flat back? It's the only kind that Silhouette offers now and my machine doesn't seem to read it without the smart metal chip in the back of the flat version.
Hi there! The round autoblade is for the Cameo 3 and would not work in a Cameo 4. You will need a different blade. Check out this blog post for Cameo 4 compatible tools: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2020/09/silhouette-cameo-4-tools-and-blades.html
I have had my cameo 3 for a few years now and it seem as if the spring for tool one is getting weak, any suggestions on how or were to get it fixed? Thanks
I've been using my Cameo for print and cut for 3 years no issues besides mis-alignment. Now halfway through the day it just having all inconcistent issues with the depth! For settings I've saved for years and its always worked with my same paper for kiss cut as well. Tried your methods and nothing works- cannot get a ratchet or manual blade. I bought a brand new auto blade and still have the same issue. Have even done a firmware update etc.
My "non cutting" problem was solved by the first tip. I have never removed my blade since my last cut (which was successful), and yet when I checked it, I saw that the blade was not actually locked in place! No idea how that happened, but I'm thrilled to be able to cut again. Is it possible that a blade can "unlatch" or work itself loose after a cut?
I just got my Cameo 4 and already it’s not cutting. The autoblade feels like it’s going to break when placing it into the housing. I’ve heard such great things but this is one hell of a learning curve.

Thank you so much for all the info here Melissa. I’m having trouble cutting with my auto blade in portrait 3 so checked the things you have suggested and going to try again 🙂
You CAN but I'd be inclined to let it finish cutting, do not unload, then change the blade setting and recut the whole project instead. This would give you a more consistent cut for the whole project.
hello i just updated my software and i found that my shilouete cameo didn't rightaway cut my design, if i have two settings for 1 design the kiss cut and the die cut, it will only do the kiss cut, then stop saying that " no media detected" i have to cancel the job and do the die cut separately because if i resume right away it will cut in the middle of the page (because it stop there)
how do i know if my blade is just blunt from use? The point is sharp but i can't feel any cutting surface that would slice through something. I've had my C4 for a year but still feel quite a newbie ....
Been trying to make puzzles with vinyl sticker paper and cardstock but even on blade depth 10 and force 33, it is not cutting all the way through. The thickness of the paper is about 0.6mm, so there is no reason for it to not cut all way. I just checked my blade after a cut after watching this video and it was set to 5. I guess that would be the reason for the issue since it is set to 10 in the program. It's a brand new blade so my guess is that it didn't get adjusted correctly due to one of the issues mentioned in the video.
Just tried manually setting it and it will not cut through this 120 lb cardstock with vinyl on top. It measures around 0.6mm but the 1mm blade still can't cut through all the way even on full force and blade depth 10.
Hey there! You can also check out this blog post for troubleshooting: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2019/11/silhouette-cameo-4-autoblade-wont-cut-5.html
Hello! Do settings vary depending whether or not you are using a mat? I've usually used the Vinyl Oracle 651 setting which I've used before but recently I've mostly been using a mat. Once I try to cut the vinyl without the mat the blade cuts all the way through and the whole vinyl starts to move and get damaged. I got a new blade because I hadn't changed it in almost 9 months but it hasn't helped. It either doesn't cut at all or it cuts all the way through. I need it to do a kiss-cut using a long roll of vinyl without a mat.

What nobody in these videos also mention is you have to pull the little tab out to get the auto blade down in the holder then push it back into the auto blade and you should see a little green dot letting you know it’s in and locked into place. Just got my silhouette last night and had problems with cutting, after almost an hour of having this problem, watching videos, googling I figured it out on my own so just a heads up to beginners.

Hey there! New subscriber here! Ive watched alot of your videos and learned tons along the way however I still cant find why my autoblade isnt adjusting I did everything here and its still not tapping at all can you help with that?😊
Hey there, if your autoblade isn't tapping, I would likely recommend replacing it. If you can manually tap it, check out this blog post: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2020/12/silhouette-cameo-autoblade-wont-cut-use.html
@@SilhouetteSchool I tried 3 different ones and I ordered new ones just to exhaust all options. Everything in the software looks fine and ready to go but when I send it to cut it doesn't tap/adjust at all.

thanks for the video, i wish my issue was here! Just bought a brand new sihouette studio 3. the blade was working fine this morning and then suddenly out of no where its not cutting anything, after so much trial, effort, and going through anything i could to get it working.
Literally the first thing you said I was doing wrong 🤣 no wonder it wasn't cutting... thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you sooo much you really fixed my blade and my mood in the same time :)
Haha happy to hear that
Hi Melissa, I have Avery adhesive laminate and HTVront sticker paper. I need a depth of 7, force of 20, and speed 3 to cut through the materials, sometimes I need multiple passes! I read that depth is too much, but I cannot get it to cut through on lower depth and force. Can you please give me some advice? Thank you for your tutorial! :)
Thank you so much I was beginning to think I was going mad!!!!!
Very helpful. Learned a lot. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
ty for the info. this has been really helpful with the issues i have. I noticed that it wouldn't click past 4 which makes sense. ty!
Glad it helped you
First cut was perfect, but the others won't even cut thru plain cardstock. I followed all your advice so I guess now i go buy a new auto blade. I just got the cameo 4 plus and was so excited, now i dont know.
Hey there! I'd check out this troubleshooting blog post: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2019/11/silhouette-cameo-4-autoblade-wont-cut-5.html
i did exactly as recommended and it works like a charm! best channel for cameo guide :)
Much appreciated!
Exactly what I was looking for thank u so much 💞 frustrating not knowing why my blade wasn't cutting 💞💞 Appreciate you 💞🌹💞
Glad I could help!
i love this video. Where in design space i. an find the force to adjust de autoblade?
The Force setting is found in the Send panel.
Thank you so much, this was super helpful! The only thing I'm struggling with now is figuring out which setting I should use. I make stickers but I laminate the sticker paper so I'm not sure what material I should put?
Hey there! Check out this blog post: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2022/02/how-to-make-waterproof-stickers-with.html
Thank you! Was ready to go buy a new machine! It was a tapping issue.. the hole was full of crap and didn't tap correctly so I was cutting at 5 depth instead of 2. :)
Glad it helped!
Love your videos, but can you upgrade your 1992 webcam? 360p is like so bad.

Hi Malissa, I have the 1st portrait machine which I love, it is always good to watch these video's, you always learn something new, TFS Cheers Anna.
Thank you so much for the in depth blade info. 😎👍
I couldn't cut with my cameo 4 and then realised from your video that i had to click the carriage against the blade LOL thank you
Thanks alot my blade is not cutting and even not changing the levels am opend the blade as per second factor its jammed with dust i cleaned properly now its working properly once again thank u so much ( i thought need to by new blade u saved my 3000/- rs)
That's great.
Thank you Melissa. Very good video.
Thank you so much for this video. It totally helped me!!!
Thank you. Was looking at the two presses you have behind you, which ones are they?
Thank you. I didn’t know that about the dust
When using the new manual 1mm blade do you change the force to a 14 as well for vinyl and htv?
Yes!
What about little folds and crinkles on some corners? Using silhouette brand matte sticker paper. Thanks!!
Turn on segment line overcut and that should help www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2021/11/7-no-tear-tips-to-cut-small-paper.html
This video helped me so much!! Thank you so much !!!!
You're so welcome!
Do you have to use a particular app to create the design of the shirt before printing? Can you use Canva? I'm a beginner
Yes you can use Silhouette Studio to design. Canva will also work ...and if you are looking for the designs themselves check out SoFontsy.com.
thank you so much. this is very helpful
Check out this blog post for Cameo 4 compatible tools:
www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2020/09/silhouette-cameo-4-tools-and-blades.html
I have had my cameo 3 for a few years now and it seem as if the spring for tool one is getting weak, any suggestions on how or were to get it fixed? Thanks
I've been using my Cameo for print and cut for 3 years no issues besides mis-alignment. Now halfway through the day it just having all inconcistent issues with the depth! For settings I've saved for years and its always worked with my same paper for kiss cut as well. Tried your methods and nothing works- cannot get a ratchet or manual blade. I bought a brand new auto blade and still have the same issue. Have even done a firmware update etc.
Is the red line on the blade moving when it taps?
Can you adjust blade height with the app silhouette go? or directly on the machine?
I believe in the new Silhouette Go App you can adjust he blade depth
My "non cutting" problem was solved by the first tip. I have never removed my blade since my last cut (which was successful), and yet when I checked it, I saw that the blade was not actually locked in place! No idea how that happened, but I'm thrilled to be able to cut again. Is it possible that a blade can "unlatch" or work itself loose after a cut?
HI there! I would just make sure that the clip on your carriage is clicked securely into place.I haven't had any trouble with it getting loose.
I just got my Cameo 4 and already it’s not cutting. The autoblade feels like it’s going to break when placing it into the housing. I’ve heard such great things but this is one hell of a learning curve.
Hi JazzyJae, it would be easier to provide you the help you are requesting if you could please send an email with some additional information. Please provide as much info (including cut settings / exact material / screen grabs) as possible when emailing. My email can be found through the contact page on Silhouette School Blog www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/p/blog-page_9.html
Thank you so much for all the info here Melissa. I’m having trouble cutting with my auto blade in portrait 3 so checked the things you have suggested and going to try again 🙂
Can you change the rachet blade setting on the fly? Pause the project remove the blade and adjust???
You CAN but I'd be inclined to let it finish cutting, do not unload, then change the blade setting and recut the whole project instead. This would give you a more consistent cut for the whole project.
hello i just updated my software and i found that my shilouete cameo didn't rightaway cut my design, if i have two settings for 1 design the kiss cut and the die cut, it will only do the kiss cut, then stop saying that " no media detected" i have to cancel the job and do the die cut separately because if i resume right away it will cut in the middle of the page (because it stop there)
Thank you! just wondering why my Cameo is not cutting straight. There is indeed debris of vinyl in my auto blade.
how do i know if my blade is just blunt from use? The point is sharp but i can't feel any cutting surface that would slice through something. I've had my C4 for a year but still feel quite a newbie ....
If it's been used a while or used on dense materials like paper or chipboard it could just be time to replace the blade.

Thanks for fixing my issue
The only 1 mm blade that I have found is for the cameo 3. Will that work on the cameo 4?
Hello there, Cameo 3 blades will not work for the 4. Check out the 1mm blade for the Cameo 4 here: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2021/04/silhouette-cameo-4-premium-blade-how.html
Thank you. I just ordered one. 👍🏻
Thanks for the info ☀️👍
update on my situation girl, i also had it unlocked lol 🤭🤭🤭🤫😝🤣😂
Brand new machine - reset tap works correctly, but the small taps don't work - no debri as machine just came out of the box. Any suggestions?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was at my witts end what to do, since it worked fine yesterday, but today it wouldn't work! The blade is full of debre!
Hey there! Glad you got it figured out, there are some other tips here: www.silhouetteschoolblog.com/2019/11/silhouette-cameo-4-autoblade-wont-cut-5.html
Thank you so much!!! I changed my force setting to 14 and it works perfect for HTV!
Hobby Lobby matte permanent vinyl needs 14 force and blade 2 on my Cameo 4.
I recommend upping the force to 14 on vinyl too.
I would get the 1mm manual blade it works much better shrsl.com/45o1l
