    Very cool. You describe a method often used. Thanks. I don’t understand why people comment below about why one now somehow must alway apply this rule. That is not what you are saying. You say this rule is often used and describe how it works. What is wrong with people?

    I think we should normalize that there aren’t any rules in filmmaking. Every technical decision should be made with an intention based on what the film is about.

    • @BreadfruitStudios
      @BreadfruitStudios  Месяц назад +8

      The filmmaker has the creative freedom to explore and experiment new approaches. However, there are universal conventions that every filmmaker must abide by for effective storytelling. That's why filmmaking is not a "walk in a park". Yes the rules can be broken, but for justifiable reasons. That's why it's better to know the rules, then use it to your advantage.

      Using the 60/30 rule is effective. The rule of thirds is effective for composition. That's why these rule exist. There is biology and science behind it. Although the rule of thirds uses a nine square grid, which is a magick square. Perhaps it's all based on the occult philosophy of people who make films. It's hard to tell. Btw, the 60/30 rule is rumoured to refer to the 30% of angels that rebelled against God. Maybe. Who knows? These "rules" work though

    • @SomewhatAbnormal
      @SomewhatAbnormal Месяц назад +2

      I don't believe, not even a little, that there are simply no rules in filmmaking, story telling, or photography. The rules, written and unwritten, are what bring time-tested human appeal. At the end of the day, we are humans that have evolved to react to colors, shapes and sounds. To deny this is silly. We should break rules, and sometimes rule breaking works. But if you want to be successful, you shouldn't see rules as an impediment.

      "Rule" doesn't only means "a prescription on what have to be done". It also means "a description of how things are or how they work". That's the meaning that everybody understand to apply with these artistic rules, like the "thirds rule".

    I can’t stand the color of modern movies to be honest, every horror movie is dark green and every desert scene is this orange red color. It’s not realistic and it distracts. It’s artsy fartsy nothing more, I never can get behind film people’s nonsense trying to explain it.

    The so-called "60-30-10 color rule" doesn't actually exist as a formal design principle. Instead, it's simply a modern interpretation of the concept of color accents, a technique that has been used in art and design for over 500 years. This approach, where one dominant color is complemented by secondary and accent colors, has been a foundational element in the work of great artists and architects throughout history. The idea is not new; it's just been repackaged for a youtube video.

  • @PrimitiveGroove
    @PrimitiveGroove Месяц назад +40

    I don't buy this at all. Im sure if you took the time you could find just as many cool great looking shots and scenes in movies that dont fit this "rule" at all. When you only show examples that fit it, it seems convincing... It is a certain aesthetic, but lots of films dont do this at all.

    • @BreadfruitStudios
      @BreadfruitStudios  Месяц назад +14

      Well, this rule isn't compulsory for everyone. It's for Filmmakers who are intentional about the color appeal of their film.

      The narrator did say it is *one* popular formula.

    • @blaximperia
      @blaximperia Месяц назад +11

      Then don’t buy it. No one is forcing you to.

    • @usaturnuranus
      @usaturnuranus 22 дня назад +2

      I guarantee you Wes Anderson buys it, big time. So, another thing is the movie examples shown here are more obvious than many out there, but I do think a lot of directors will employ a more toned down, less striking version. Like "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" used this type of color application, but was more subtle (well, until you see a side by side showing what the actual colors looked like). Motion pictures are a primarily visual artform, so of course they are going to control the color palette just like they set-up the framing, length of shots, lighting, etc.

    • @kevinj8190
      @kevinj8190 6 дней назад

      He said “one popular rule used to simplify color design”. A lot of films do, a lot of films don’t. You’re right.
