DIY 1/2 Inch REBAR Bending Method | CHEAP!

  • I am working on a concrete block Garden bed in a Passive Solar Greenhouse Nursery attached to my home and I didn't want to spend money on a rebar bender. I developed an easy and cheap method to bend 1/2 inch rebar for small to medium size projects. Using two 3/4 inch galvanized pipes I am able to bend it accurately by hand with a little mechanical advantage.

Thanks for posting. This solved my problem and is the most practical method for the project I’m working on

Very cool trick. I would probably have to butt the opposite end up against a wall or something to keep it from sliding. I don't think I'm heavy enough to hold it in place and get enough reach on the bending pipe. Thanks!! -Lea

I'm gonna take your advice on the wall butting 'cause I have a bunch more to bend. You might be able to mount one on the pipes just above your head somewhere, then you could slip the other pipe on to the pinch-point and use your weight to help bend it downward. Just a thought. Thank you!

The problem with this method is that there is no control of the bending diameter, which causes the bar to be severely weakened on the outside radius of the bend. Code requires 6 x bar size as MINIMUM bending diameter (or x8 for >1" rebar). That's why you need to have a wheel or form of appropriate diameter. This method is fine for ornamental rebar but I wouldn't recommend this method for anything structural.

I did not know that. It makes sense. I wouldn't recommend using bars this way for any walls taller than a few feet, in that case.

Wow 35 that’s a little cold on your hands, that’s a great method, that stuff is definitely hard to bend. Great share! Just subscribed. Blessings

Great... Very simple method.. thank you for your sharing idea.. may i know what size of the rebar...

I'm sorry, I just saw your question. The rebar is 1/2 inch. I haven't tried the method with 5/8 inch. You'd need more strength or more torque to bend that.

Seems I can find 3/8” x 20’ for $8 each at Menards. I need about 200 linear feet of fencing for my garden. So I’m considering using the rebar for a top and bottom and attaching chicken wire. Also going around my dwarf fruit trees and maybe make a frame around them to hold bird netting or frost blankets.

There is a jig for seeing if you have a right angle. It's called a framer's square.

I would not call this "Cheap" but innovative. I would mount one side down to keep it from moving. But that is where I could get "innovative".

I absolutely agree - it's only cheap if you already have the expensive pipes. 100% on the mounting the bottom pipe - I was struggling to keep it still with my foot.
