This is a real beautiful peace of furniture. I like how you incorporated 2 completely different skill sets into this project. You're a very talented guy and I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of you. Great things are going to happen for you.
I right away said before starting the video, that cabinet looks like an aquarium stand. Spot on as I build 3 from scratch for my setups, 2 reef - 1 discus setup. Looks freaking beautiful with an eye for details. DIYs are always interesting, specifically the final project is revealed.
I love your video! I've been doing woodworking for about 50 years and I have a little tip for you. Next time when you go to fill you screw holes and joints try bondo. I have had great success with it.
Any time I suggest to someone to use automotive finishes in woodworking it is usually just dismissed or laughed at. Few realize how much better they are and how much easier it is to get a nice finish with and the durability is way better. Automotive clear is the best thing to use on kitchen cabinets. Much more durable.
You're very talented! Appreciate your taping this and explaining so well. Great product! That paint job is awesome! And you have the cleanest, most organized shops EVER!
This woodworking book is really detailed, t.co/SGIXIPXR0z ! With the aid of this plan, I was able to use words, drawings, real images and different diagrams. It is really an informative product. I am presently making furniture together with my brother and thanks to this product, I feel like helping him is possible.?
That turned out to be a really great looking project! No doubt it will be sturdy enough for a fish tank! I also loved watching the auto spray finish process-- something I know nothing about! Thanks for the video!
I sprayed cars for a living for several years. I find that applying spray finishes to furniture and cabinets is far easier, quicker and consistent. Good job with this demonstration.
Hey Matt, your cabinet looks great and would love to give you some tips on the painting for cabinets. I have a cabinet shop. Sanding sealer will seal the grain in the oak plywood and the cut ends on the MDF . There is also a more dense MDF if you are having issues with that. I recommend Pre-catalyzed tinted lacquer for the finish. Not that the automotive paint you used can't work but the Lacquer can get so many sheen options as well as aging, distressed and other amazing wood working possibilities. Hit me up if you are interested in this stuff. Your work and detail looks really good!
+Making SawDust Thanks for being there from the start man! I really appreciate it, I am constantly trying to improve and grow this thing! I got a lot of cool content and I'm about to start a weekly schedule, so I got a lot more coming!! Thanks again man!!
Mixing software and agitator! That's a dream set up right there. I'm still dicking about with plastic sheets for a tent, an old shower extractor for positive pressure and half a mile of duct tape! Learning heaps from you mate.
never knew MDF could look so nice! dude, that's a really nice mixing system you have there. I need to invest in a good sprayer.im sick of wasting money on good rushes by the time I come back around to using them they're hard as a rock and even when they do something up there never the same.as always nice work matt!
With ANY pneumatic sprayer (even lesser quality) you've GOTTA take the entire thing apart & clean it till water will run through clear. I'm a Set Designer, Lead Scenic Painter & I used to be an on-set carpenter. I've had my share of expensive AND cheap guns, but cleaning is the only way to get an even spray(like the gun is new again!). Hope this helps man! Cheers! ✌
Nice work, Matt. Neat to see an aquarium stand being made. That is what got me into woodworking. I had a 150 gallon aquarium I was making a stand for. In the end I ditched that hobby and ran with woodworking.
Wow I wonder if you can give me some advice on a nice gray to Black finish color Matt look for a projection screen it looks beautiful you think I could take a piece of MDF to a body shop and see if they'll do that for me
+HCAC BUILD The reason I didn't use auto body filler is because I really didn't feel that it was necessary and the filler is much harder to sand. I felt that because of that reason it might give me trouble with the mdf being softer and the areas around the filler sanding away before the filler sanded smooth. Hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching!!
I'm a spray painter also. We use sikkens at work too but we are using the autowave 2.0 waterbase. It's great stuff. Never got the chance to use the solvent auto base as they changed to water 2 days before I started working there.
Mel and part board doesn’t always mean “cheap” ………much more stability in varying climates so no butt cracks in winter... Glue glue glue with MDF splines more glue and clamps and you could build a particle board skyscraper. I’m not moving in but you get the point…………but anyway nice work dude the finish is sweet!!
My grandfather made cabinets for a living. He drank a quart of scotch a day and beat his kids and wife like a fine tuned drum but man people would always look the other way cause of those cabinets. RIP POP POP Adolf.
Chris Stewart im sorry but i come from one of those abusive childhoods and would like to know how in any way fine craftsmanship is an excuse for being an abusive drunk. oh yeah beat your kids bloody it's ok so long as you give me a good product. horrible analogy. hope pop pop is in the same place as my dad.......Hell. then again whats to be expected from someone with the same name as one of the worlds most horrible people....ADOLF
+Mark DeWall A loser move? You realize Bondo is a brand right? I've been painting cars for the last 10 years, I'll put my finish beside your any day you want to. Why would you use auto body filler when you know it's harder than the MDF once hardened. There is no way you can get the surfaces to be flat and in the same plane.
Beautiful work dude! This type of hand-made craftmanship is in crazy high demand due to all the cheap particle board bs out there. You're going places man. 👏👏
Really nice looking cabinet. Never thought of using mud to patch holes and cracks. Next time you glue a couple of sheets together, you can fire a couple of small Brad's into them. That's will keep them from sliding around when you clamp them.
Okay, I don't want to spend out to have all these fun toys at home, but I definitely need to find a friend who does! This is the way to finish all household cabinetry, especially for wet areas! Also, lad - your party suit would look a lot better with a full hood and external ventilator, and also if you wore it every time you spray any paint. A long life is a good life!
A lot of people over do fish tank stands, building them out of 2x4 frames and then skinning them with plywood. It ends up being very unnecessary. You just need to take into account that the tank full will weigh around 8lbs per gallon. Which you did for sure that is a stout stand! And that finish is awesome, you can tell you're a pro!
i built two fish tank stands for a friend of mine and i got a pretty good finish rolling on the primer and paint but i wish I had the equipment and skill to achieve a finish like that. great job.
If you need to seal up mdf edges, mix a 50/50 batch of cheap wood glue and water. Paint it on all the edges, let dry and sand smooth. Nice looking cabinet!
Excellent work young man disregard all the negative comments, those people would rather be negative than to use their years of experience to help train an aspiring apprentice. I guess some people feel better about themselves if they can tear someone else down, it's their personality. You do good work you will go far.
This was an awesome video to watch but you are clearly a highly experienced professional and the average person could not do this. I really like the modern way to build aquarium stands because it has plenty of room inside the cabinet and yours's is clearly the best quality I've seen. Now I have to find someone local that can build one for me. The finished stand is awesome!
that is an amazing finish. i had the idea to take a new desk i'm working on to a body shop because i am tired of painting my projects. but i wasn't sure the paint would be suitable, but your video proved it is! gonna go find a shop now, thanks
When you are gluing up large pieces try sprinkling some salt after you spread the glue. The salt will give enough "grip" to keep the pieces from sliding and it will dissolve before the glue cures. Nice project BTW

Really nice work, and nice set of tools / equipment. While breathing compressor air isn't great (even filtered), it is far better than getting two-part auto paint in your lungs. Totally agree man, it's hard to make people understand that!
I suspected automotive paint would be awesome in woodworking. That's why I'm here.
You are so talented and I’m glad RUclips has a platform to showcase your skills. Thanks for sharing.
I don't understand why some people have put a thumb upside down, your work is amazing and your performance too.
Great job anyway
5 years later and still looks awesome, great job m8!

Thanks for the tips.
Is there wood that you don't use sanding sealer on
David Cobb is correct. HDF would have probably been a better choice for the finish you were looking for.
This cabinet came out fantastic, Matt. That looks like a 100 gallon tank. It probably weighs nearly a half ton.
Great when you have all the tools for use
Sweet job...As a carpenter, I appreciate the time you spent on it...Dry times and sanding are brutal time killers....:)

THAT is incredible. Never seen anyone go to that length or try that for finishing wood. Great job matt! I am glad i subscribed. (thanks to jay)
Thanks man, thanks for watching and subscribing :)

Nice build Matt, looks great with the fish tank all set up. It is nice when you have access too and knowledge of all of the spray equipment.
Thank you, my spraying skills definitely came in handy for this project :)
Nice paint job, however it looks like it needed a better caulking job at the Base 😆
perhaps you could show us on some of your work
I would gladly make one for you if it's going to teach you how to caulk properly
why do you assume i dont know how to caulk properly?
You asked me to make a video for you lol
just want to see if you have the skill or just talk a bunch of shit about someone else's hard work
Man that finish is crazy nice. Well done.
+Robert Ball
Thanks man!
MDF is worthless crap. 0 resistance to moisture. Drywall mud is not a wood filler. Use Bond-o or a real wood filler. Other than that nice work!
+Mark DeWall

MDF is perfect for interior maybe your confusing mdf with thermafoil wrapped mdf which is trash
Nice one Matt! That finish looks unreal!

Really nice work, and nice set of tools / equipment. You might consider wearing a supplied air hood - you can purchase the "disposable" ones that actually last about 3 months of everyday use - you can tap off your compressor air (I run my breathing air through an extra filter). While breathing compressor air isn't great (even filtered), it is far better than getting two-part auto paint in your lungs. Not trying to be a troll, it's great work and your work habits are similar to most who use auto paint. But, you'll live a lot longer! Thanks for sharing!
