@@FellowFilmmaker they would be great for grip work also. They sell grip gear exactly like this to place lights and other gear on. You place them between walls and mount items without destroying property. How have you been doing BTW?
Yes, I love those poles (if you check out my studio tour you can see me using a few varipoles). These cargo bars are not strong enough for heavy lights, but lightweight things it can handle for sure. :D And I'm doing well, thanks for asking! I've had a pretty good week or two lately and getting back into a groove with videos. Got some exciting things coming up to share with everyone. How are you? :D
Haha no problem at all! It's a standing joke from a livestream for some of the viewers, I guess (see other comments to see me explain the situation) My name is Heather, I just forgot to put it in this video here, haha :D No embarrassment, don't worry at all
OOOoooo....clever with those cargo bars. Seems much more stable, and less to trip over. I use a background support to hold up a skrim but the legs of the stands are very wide and that can be an issue with set-up in some locations. The cargo bars would eliminate the tripping hazard.
very smart, I see the video was uploaded a few years ago and looks like its still solid! any updates to it at all? Also with the second method do you always have to have the cargo bar supported by the ceiling of the roof or can it be lower. for example if I wanted to use this for an outdoor scene with no ceiling.
Those types of bars can also be used from wall to wall as a makeshift ceiling grid. You can hang light weight leds with clamps. Just make sure you're hitting studs and no dry wall haha.
those poles look awesome. Looks like a little less setup than what i do for an oversized softbox or scrim. I dry negatives in a 3x3x8 grow tent. Sometimes i use the frame as a scrim or the tent as a softbox.
Hmm, none too many I understand why they did it, but really there were no big changes beyond just having it work with their newer app and have the updated control box. Both are nice of course, but if you own the old one I'd say it's just fine.
@@FellowFilmmaker thanks for this! I was considering it but really think if they expanded this fanless line to panel lights, it would really peak my interest
I'm literally omw now to get that cargo bar...wow. What a CLUTCH hack for mounting all kinds of things - I already have two varipoles for my backdrop, but those are not moving any time soon lol!! Thank you...Belinda?! 😆 #whosbelinda
So happy to see your excitement! :D Love my varipoles too, so these got me excited when I found them, especially for the price. :D Haha, oh goodness the Belinda joke! It was from a livestream, can't remember which one. Basically got a scam text message during the livestream asking if I was Belinda, I said the text aloud during the stream and now it's historic apparently :D And if you knew that already, then yes #whosbelinda
And you win for confusing folks on my name haha! :D I think here in the comments theres a few newer folks who now think my name is actually Belinda, haha :D
So is that basically an autopole? Sounds great! I saw the scrim title though, and was hoping you were talking about diy diffusion screen (like the scrims that go in a light), haha!!
It kinda is yeah, but not for lighting equipment to be attached, I don't think it can handle the weight. Haha that would have been a crazy thing to build! :D
Yeah, it can do 40lb or something, but I wouldn't trust it for my lights. Maybe a small tube light or something at best. I say that cuz I baby my lights... I'd feel horrible if I dropped one.... then again I have dented a few reflector dishes here and there.... :D oops!
Hey! :D Yes things are good, just had a bunch of deadlines and had my head down getting them finished off :D Lots of great content coming over the coming weeks!
Hey Heather, loving your channel, learning lots :) One thing I'd love to learn more about is gels. A lot of RUclipsrs either use the correct color temp light for general lighting, then RGB lights for small feature lights or practicals. But I almost never see color correcting gels on barndoors for general lighting, or background washes, or compositional feature lighting. Is the age of gels dead? Are people preferring bi-color lights and taking the power hit on the chin, rather than getting a full-powered daylight lamp and pegging an orange gel over it? Or is it the case that gel use is for large sets and big lights only? Granted, small RGB pocket lights come with many special effects that gels can't reproduce... But if there's a need for orange and blue lightning flashes, do people cover their small practicals with gels, or do most colorize these in post? Thanks!
The age of gels is not dead :D RGB is not as powerful as daylight only lights, so there is still a benefit to gels (tho keep in mind you do still lose intensity with certain color of gels since that's how coloring light goes) Gels are great if you don't need RGB often and want a simple enough solution. I still have gels and from time to time I use them when I need a light to be a certain color that is not typically rgb
Warning: The Harbor "Frite" (hehe) Cargo Bar she features only extends to 114 inches (9.5 ft). Most ceilings in the USA are at least 10ft heigh. So, these will not work from floor to ceiling in most applications.
Haha yeah, that accent :P And true it does have a limited reach. Although alot of folks I know or houses I've ever been in are around 8-9ft ceiling height. Maybe we are around different ceilings haha :)
@@FellowFilmmaker Actually you are right.. turns out average ceiling height is indeed 8ft (just googled it). I, sadly, have 10ft. Anyway, great video and great channel.. I just subscribed.
Thanks!
Well thank you! Super cool super thanks :) Always appreciated

Cargo Bar Method - GENIUS!
Right?! I love it :D
This is great!
Scrims are the best.

That’s a really good idea. I never considered using cargo poles. Good job. :)
To be fair I saw someone else do it with a similar system, liked it and adopted it! :D
I am new here and I am loving it!

Great job Heather. I have to pick up a couple of those myself.

Definitely! It's why I switched to the task pole/cargo bar setup, it kept me from making mistakes and getting really upset during productions.
