All of these are great points, ESPECIALLY the last one about popularity. It even goes for art in general, how tying the value of your work to its popularity will just make you resent it

It happens so much, it's so disheartening!

Yeah. The worst part about popularity is that it's so often luck based, right time and right place, no matter how or why you want it.
You also can't predict it so things can sometimes get popular much later on and outlast your interest in them or just happen long after you've finished something (single piece of art or meme, shorter comic with definite ending, fanfic, etc.) Sometimes the WIP gets more interest than the finished piece. Sometimes your poop post gets a million more likes than the thing you rendered for a week. Also ofc marketing makes a major difference but most people can't get that or won't be able to predict how much it'll help them because there's still a lot of luck involved (it's why not every book with heavy marketing or even word of mouth consistently becomes an international bestseller. You can game the system but it's not even as simple as that.)
So I definitely agree with this and what Voltergeist has said here and in the video. Chasing popularity will probably just make you unhappy, even if you get lucky and obtain your 15 minutes of fame.🥲

@@DoveJS right- it’s better to build something that lasts that you can be proud of than grasping at whatever is the flavor of the month.

Hit that truth button! Hi, it's Akil, the one and only giant of animation class 2015 at Bloomfield. Diggin' your tutorial and experience. Miss you and the fellow creators from college!

Akil!! I remember you, it's so good to hear from you! I hope you're doing well! Miss you too, man. Hard to believe it's already been such a long time ago.

@@Voltergeist Since you last saw or heard from me, I have been at the gym, shredding it up as early as 5am before work. When I am not at work, I spend a lot of time working on the profile for my characters and stories. The initial designs are good and the game concept story is bonkers. It's like Nintendo meets Spyro with the story arc of Jojo Bizarre Adventures; a different monkey for each arc. It is not a manga or anything.

I've seen people try to get into comics thinking it would help them make money or attention and they always burned out or abandoned it lol. It's so much work to make one you really have to be your biggest fan first if you want to be motivated especially if it's long form. I'm glad I took other's advice to make smaller ones first I learned so much

Yeah, same. The only way I knew I'd stick with it was to make several small comics. And I still do that with my larger story! Thanks for watching!

I feel you on the not updated old comic pages for a bit, I have wanted to fix a few issues from a few years ago for a long time, as well as update some figures to current design models from first few issues, but I push forward! because revising pages is kind of relaxing, I do it as a break in between doing more newer issues.

I'm currently drawing/writting a comic on webtoon and I'll admit that I initially started it with the task of gaining more attention/popularity on my art but now I do it because I really want to tell the stories that ive had in my head for a while. even if the numbers are small im happy that theirs a group of people that are interested in my story. great video!

I tried going into a webcomic with no plans once, just the basic idea. It was awful, I hated the story I created. I’m going to rewrite it later, and definitely plan ahead.

As a life-long game master and OC-maker, I've tried my hand at webcomics a few times thinking that storyteller bug in me could combine with my art. but nope. I just do not enjoy the process. I have the utmost respect for anyone who just buckles down and does it.

Yeah! And that's entirely OK! It's good to know our limits as well so that we don't spend time spinning our wheels on things we don't enjoy. Like, I thoroughly do not enjoy making character references. And some people can portray their characters just as well in consistent, singular images (like you do!). It's good to see you here. Thanks for watching o:
