By far the most disturbing and unsettling level in Doom 2, also the most hellish one. This is as close as "Hell on Earth" comes to the hellishness of Episode 3 - but the music, the intestinal textures and the lack of visible skies makes it darker and more fear-inducing than anything from Inferno in my opinion. Not to mention it's also simply more difficult.
Y'know I don't see enough Let's Players who talk this in-depth about the level design. You've carved up a fascinating niche for yourself with the map analysis.
I personally think this level should have been after The Living End (swap them so TLE is Map 28 and TSW is Map 29). This seems better suited for the last level before the final boss, as it is the most hellish, and you are essentially descending into hell. This is also my favorite map in Doom 2, and in all of Doom as well.
I totally agree, however I think The Living End was a more difficult level than this. I was able to finish all of them on Ultra-Violence but could never finish that one. But yeah, look-wise, this should have been the last level, it's way more hellish looking.
I think the Living End is better as a climax to the game before the final boss but that's just me. Makes the Spirit World more like the calm before the storm.
I don't even play Doom (scared the crap out of me as a child, and I think it still might) but I still watch all of your videos because your voice is legendary and, well, you're just the best. Awesome videos!
It's amazing how much I learn from watching these videos. The whole time I've owned this game, I'm just now finding out about the lowering bloodfall and the idea behind the walls in the final room. That's some really nice attention to detail, and I can't believe I just overlook it every time I play. Once again, nice video. Just two more maps to go!
I'm gonna be honest, the ending was just douchy. That's the only part in the game I know of where you're REQUIRED to randomly shoot some symbol on the wall to get to the exit. Wut? Good aesthetic, just douchy design.
Took me quite a while to figure that out. I found myself pressing on every wall trying to find the way forward. Then when I figured it out, I fell into one of the pits in the last room.
This is probably my favorite doom 2 map. I've played it enough where I'm pretty confident with it! I've handled it a little differently at the start, which has its pros and cons. The bloodfall elevator is very subtle!
Fascinating! My strategy has always been to get the Arachnotrons to kill the first Mastermind, then use the BFG to kill the second. Didn't think about getting the two Masterminds to infight, probably because I was always under the impression that infighting could only happen between demons of a different species.
Thank you so much for your guides. I hadn't played Doom 2 for over 20 years (possibly since around 1998 or 1999) since I started watching your videos- I remember I completed nearly all the levels on Ultra Violence back in the day but found some of them a real slog, this time round I'm doing the levels it feels much easier- using the Brutal Doom mod as well, so many secrets I didn't know about either!
This is a very good map. I agree with what you say, hell levels that are done right are the best. I love episode 3 of ultimate doom and episode replacements such as dtwid episode 3.
I love how this one guy is so friendly and so nice, even playing a game so violent. I love how he explains EVERYTHING about the levels and I also watched alot of his videos (about 5 or 6) to get how to end levels that are disegned badly and hard to get on your own throught both doom 1 and 2. Like, as an example, how should've I known that I had to shoot that wall to open the exit? Thanks Davis. Keep doing what you're doing, you're the best at doing it
Last room described perfectly. For some reason that room gives me chills, maybe because I think this room is like inside a demon, since it has so much detail. BTW good to have you back. 2 more maps and its Half Life with good old Barney.
Awesome video, I imagined the demons coming out of the intestines in detail... AWESOME! And eeyup, I sent you more PM's but I guess you couldn't get to them considering you were busy for a few days!
That's why Doom is different. You don't need those aestethic features for gameplay sake, but it adds to the game's quality, those details like the last intestinal room makes Doom unique
I would like it to be known that between the 4 backpacks guarded by the revenants and the 7 plasma cells, there are *20 BFG SHOTS!!!* So, if anything is giving you any sort of trouble in this level, you have PLENTY of ammo.
Did you know? this is the only map in Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and final doom to have two Spider Masterminds in the same level, only other time I can think of is of course Scythe Map 25 Envy.
I had so much trouble with this because I had no idea you could walk on some of the red floors. I didn't realize some of them were blood. Great playthrough as usual, BigMacDavis!
Ah yes my favorite map in Doom II, The Spirit World. I loved this map because its action packed and creepy. The real fun goes to this level is when you put brutal doom mod with doom 2016 addon and listening The only thing they fear is you the same time. I love glory killing the spider mastermind its so satisfying.
So I've decided to play through the original games, which I've never done and this is like the 5 time I've looked at your videos for help. I never thought about shooting the symbols lol
I started my decent into gaming with this game Curse you Doom curse you and all your glory I still play this game, thank you creator I now to you on such a great Game. To me this is the begining.
Good job with this map. This map is cool, I like that exit room and spinal cord hallway area. That was alot of Araknatrons, and there were 2 Spider Masterminds, cool. Archviles everywhere it seems.
To quote the background music name played in this stage, it seems that this stage may be "Getting Too Tense" for you! You almost didn't get the Spiderdemons to infight each other, but you managed to do it at the last second that your invulnerability is running out. BTW, the Revenants are a pain in the ass, just like the Pain-in-the-Ass Elementals. Also, what a cool thing, the Hell Knight destroying a Revenant via infight. The interior near the end of this stage screams nausea fuel. Otherwise, nice vid.
wow this map looks really hard, i can't wait to try it using my challenge (pistol only walkthrough) and it would be fun to see u try that challenge on this map. now i cant wait for blue shift i want to know all the secrets!! (don't forgett the chumtoad secret in xen) cya in the next video and keep up the awsome work ;)
@BigMacDavis Some Interesting Points. 8:13 I Had Easy Time Here, As I Had Fought A Spectre Who DROPPED The Invisibility Sphere (Yes, In Brutal DooM, You Get Those Spheres From Spectres Mostly, But Instead Of Those Spheres, You Get Hostages Who'd Fight By Your Side, And Die Normally), And Beat Those Revenants In The Red Key Room, Using Only A Super Shotgun, With No Damage. Also, At 9:15, I DID Followed The First Procedure Of Killing Mancubus With Rockets, But I Did Something Different. I RAN OUT OF THE ROOM Through The Blood Pool, And Let The Enemies In-fight Each Other, While Only One Revenant Was Needed To Do My Job. That Can Be Done, If Your Timing Is Smart Enough.
7:59 Damn, you don't even consider Arch-Viles the second most annoying?? Inconceivable!! Here's my Top 5 most hated Doom enemies: *1. Arch-Vile* *2. Revenant* (samesies! 🤜🤛) *3. Pain Elemental* *4. Lost Soul* *5. Chaingunner* Yes, I placed the Chaingunner above the Cacodemon and Mancubus. Simply because he can sneakily chip away at your health wherever you are in his line of sight. I actually don't mind the Caco's and Mancubi because they're slow moving lol. So there you have it.
This is the most messed up level in Doom 2. The dark rooms and spinal cord makes it hellish. The amount of random revenants is psychotic. The unique music sort of speaks for itself.
@@BigMacDavis I think the grotesque and twisted design is what makes the level so disturbing. It’s also weird how it’s not the last level, which in a way makes it even more disturbing.

Hard and the hellish feeling is really all around you! At least there are lots of invulnerabilities to help you out! And I love your description of the final room! Regarding my previous comments in the last two maps........ There's also a question somewhere in there that I'd like answered, if you don't mind. Nearly done with Doom 2!
In regards to your question about my computer, it's pretty old. I think the actual computer was built in 1999 and was used for Win98. But I've upgraded it over the years, and so now it's a WinXP Professional Service Pack 2, Intel Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz, 2.99 GHz, 1.49 GB RAM.
This map is indeed good. Maybe it's just me, but it reminds be a little bit of TNT Map28, "Heck". And nice job with the Masterminds! I didn't know that you can put them on fight with each other. Nice video to come back, my friend! =)
All the hit scanners can infight each other even if it's the same enemy. This one also reminds me of Heck...well let's say that Heck reminds me of The Spirit World since The Spirit World was first.
Okay, I learned something new on Doom. I played the map right now and worked very easy. Also it's very fun to Berserk-punch the Revenant, lol. Thank you both! =)
JimmyGGS91 Yeah, in my practice run of this map, I was surprised at how easy it was to punch out the Revenant behind the secret wall. So I decided to show it off in the actual video. :)
All your walkthrough videos are great, actually they are the best, but have you thought before on doing a speed run video ?, a youtube called zreo master has a speed run on nightmare difficulty and finishes doom 2 on about 22 minutes I wonder if you can beat his record
Yeah, so I just got this feeling again while watching a walkthrough of D2TWiD. That level also has this music track, and for sure it does a huge chunk of the job, but The Spirit World itself really brings the unease big time. This is THE level from Doom 2 that's gonna give you bad dreams. Doom's Inferno was bleak, morose and sometimes twisted, but the often open skies, friendlier textures still made the place look enticing in some fashion (same goes for DTWiD's Inferno really). But here? Dunno, there's just something hideous about this level. It brings the feeling of tension up to eleven, it shows you that you're in deep, you're really dealing with serious business right now, playtime's over. It contrasts the somewhat inviting, otherworldly, occult kind of darkness from Doom's Inferno with something much more grounded, murderous, relatable. The Spirit World really is the hardest-hitting level in Doom 2, it's a true masterpiece of evil, hopeless and tense atmosphere. That said, it would really be amazing to finally see you do walkthroughs in this style for DTWiD, UDTWiD and D2TWiD. Would totally watch and comment
At 9:30 it's better to turn right and fire a couple rockets into the flaming skulls quick and then worry about the revenant IMO the mancubus is easy to dodge there. If you deal with rev + imps quick you can save rockets too. Then you just have fatty to kill.
I have a similar tactic. I hoon over and bfg the revenants then swing around and hammer the souls with another. Things quieten down very quickly leaving fatty on his lonesome
I believe I found an easier way to deal with the enemies in the intestine room...I actually did it a lot earlier on while we were exploring. I killed the archvile with a BFG shot and then there are holes in the floor where the revenants and hellknight come up when you grab the megasphere--just super shotgun them from the rims of the holes and they can't even hit back. Much easier I think
The way I use to fight arachnotron and spider mastermind is. I walk to the first invulnerability and just walk from the arachnotron toward the stair so the arachnotron and the middle spider will fight and spider will die. The second spider never interupted the fight. Then I go down and pick the second invulnerability and dragging the rest of arachnotron toward the stair so they got shoot by the spider and I just hide again on the stair. The second spider will die and I can use shotgun to the rest of arachnotron. Its a beautiful fight. Hehehe..
8:00 My sentiments after playing a mod with excessive revenant spam! I swear half of modders are just trolls who want you to shotgun/SSG a revenant where it’s either too narrow or too wide, or face off running around a tight busy arena with revenant rockets chasing you and you can’t get a break. I think revenants are too overused; I get that they have the seeking missile aspect the rest of the monsters lack and it’s an excellent challenge when it’s well done, but I’d appreciate a balance with all the other monsters.
14:12 I like living levels in video games. Not many games have them. I've played the game Blood which has a pretty cool body level but it's not 100%. I'd like to find a game with either a level that is a living level or the entire game is based on being inside a body. Maybe a survival type game where you have to leave the body by any means necessary. or kill the body of the beast you're inside of.
This along the citadel are top 2 favorite maps from this game good job :D I always wondered are you ever gonna do doom wads or megawad walkthroughs ? If you do than you should start with Hell Revealed ;)
You know how to describe a room.

that last room is very similiar to plutonia experiment map 5 ghost town's exit room.

All your walkthrough videos are great, actually they are the best, but have you thought before on doing a speed run video ?, a youtube called zreo master has a speed run on nightmare difficulty and finishes doom 2 on about 22 minutes
I wonder if you can beat his record
12:05 always called that texture brains haha. Never thought to call it intestines. I like that also.
Now I think they're officially called tendrils or tentacles.
as always your videos are great man !!! :))
TheYourGod666 Thank you, my friend! :)
Also I think this is the best music of doom 2 it's so ominous and so tense!

Mancubus: Oooh, loneliness and cheeseburgers are a dangerous mix...
Your my favorite Doom RUclipsr
Thank you so much, cats united, I'm glad you enjoy! :)
I just can't wait for Blue Shift series :D
I'm glad you are as excited as I am. I can't wait to get to it.
;) Thanks for reading and replying to all of your fans ;)) and of course making this entertaining content ;)
SlashDot.R00T.exe No problem at all. I'm happy to do all this. :)
;))) love ya man :-)
SlashDot.R00T.exe Haha, same to you. :)
You should do portal walkthroughs
I love the music In this level.
YES!!! CAN'T WAIT UNTIL I GET HOME!
espnthefuture Cool! I hope you enjoy! :)
Hehehe..
The last room is a great design. I love that throne room also. Hell is a terrible place.
20th viewer! new record also great vid :D
ardaunlubursa Lol, thank you! :D
Thanks, I was stuck on this level
Thanks a lot man
Thank you I was stuck on this...
Gee Geq Yes, I will be doing MegaWad Walkthroughs in the future. But I'll probably start with something like Scythe. ;)
thank you very much help a lot
