Seriously though. It doesnt. Destiny is my favorite lore in my 25 years of MMORPG/FPS ..but they SUCK at telling that story. I will say, there seems to be a lot more so far this season and it's REALLY helping. 1/2 clan doesnt know the story because they dont read lore tabs. I HATE reading lore tabs to learn the MAIN story. In-game dialogue cant even be call the Cliff Notes version. It's just so bare bones.

My fear is this - not that the Darkness will destroy us, but that through the Darkness we will turn into the new Hive. The horror of an eternity of humanity carving apart the universe, killing and dominating everything so that it can never potentially kill or dominate us. The true threat of the Darkness has never been what it could do to us, but what it is offering to do _for_ us.
Just to clarify, the Hive don’t (yet) use powers gifted to them by the Darkness. The sword logic drives the “kill em all” mentality of the Hive, and is payment for the powers gifted to them by the worm gods. Whatever the case, your reason for fearing the Darkness makes sense, and is one of many dreadful scenarios imagined by us all. Ultimately, the scariest thing about the powers offered to us by the Darkness is that the Darkness has asked for nothing in return...
Any power which comes with a corrupting will cannot be efficiently used. Because eventually the very power which you used to protect will, without your realization, be used to enslave. It will remold your mind and that which you were will be long gone.

First off there are a few camera motions that bungie doesn’t use like the whip pan at 00:57 also there are the few motions quirks that are very common when people use models that aren’t theirs as they have to work around limitations they didn’t create

@@gregbridge There were gifs every collectors edition had. So everyone had to submit their gif. At first there is nothing shown however someone figured out that if you line up the gifs so that they play 400 miliseconds after each other they show letters. And so the same person created a program which recorded all the letters shown. All of these letters made a couple of pages of lore which was missing from the collectors editions. (in the collectors edition there was a book full of lore however there were pages ripped out and so this ARG recovered those pages.) The lore hints at the new raid boss.

So the darkness is: only the strong deserve to live and the weak will die, and the light is the disruption of that balance because it wants all life to have a fair chance to live life to its fullest. The random and sporadical pattern of fair chance upsets the equation of the flower game, that 1+0=1. 1 being the strong and 0 being the weak, the strong are born deserving to live, thus order is guaranteed as the end of the pattern will always be the same, as the outcome is always the same. But the light wants 1+1=2 endlessly, an even chance for all life to grow strong and love each other in appreciation of light's life's answer, peace. If everyone is 2 then there is no gain, nothing to prove, just an endless random pattern of unending life. I get what the darkness wants, order in a chaotic universe that knows no bounds, for the betterment of all life, if you're born a 0, then you won't waste space or have a doomed chance at life, because what's the point in letting something that can't live, live, it's cruel. But but the cruelness of the 1s conquest to end 0, is what ultimately saves 0s from trying to live with a 100% guarantee of failure. Thus keeping order and the flower pattern ending the same over and over. But the light is far more optimistic, chaos breeds chance, if 1+1=2, then surely everything should be a 2, right? If everything is a 2, then everything has an even chance to survive, and thrive, and know the love of living, the world's greatest gift, being able to actually survive. The thrill of the 50% chance to actually make it, knowing you can if you try, and knowing everyone else can too. The flower pattern ends differently everytime, because life is everywhere, blooming without fear for being a 0 or hiding from a 1. Given me something to think about.

He seeks to rewrite the game by poisoning it with the sustenance of weak forces to add evermore complexity, he doesn't seek to add strength to the equation. Given your strong=1, weak=0 logic he'd be trying to make 1+0=2; which is plainly impossible. This actually makes it easier to understand why The Darkness was fretting so much when the Light was trying to turn itself into a new rule; he saw the pointlessness of the effort. That in the end, 1+0 would still equal 1; because it can be nothing else. It is the final shape. As for which side to "support", The Darkness literally encapsulates the concept of victory itself. Him facing off against The Light can end in no other way besides his W; because he literally embodies such an occurrence. Being strong is never wrong.
@@KevinJohnson-cv2no the light simply wanted to give every species a chance to thrive. Keyword chance. The dark simply wanted only the strong through natural selection but the light knew that not all "weak" races were actually weak just Givin a bad lot. The darkness didn't care and could only imagine 1 way for the game to end. The same way it alwase ends the strong over the weak. But Givin a chance to become strong sometimes the weak xan become even better than the strong. I.e humans on earth. Humans have the strongest guiding force of light and soon the powers of the neohumans and the ability to use darkness for the light. Which is unheard of in the galaxy. One of the weakest creatures is becoming the strongest all because we were Givin a chance. That's what the concept of light vs dark is in destiny. The darkness couldn't see into the future only what's has happened before and what's worked before regardless on what could be better. While the light can see the hope of the future and not being endlessly stuck with only 1 answer. While the darkness path will always win is it truly the best?
I believe that the Flower Game is based on Conway's Game of Life. what they are describing sounds like similar concept, Conway's game has 4 rules, and the flowers are pretty clearly analogous to life and death. Of course the Game of Life is actually a zero player game and is entirely deterministic based on your initial conditions so then obvious question is what to do the Gardener and Winnower represent in this. My initial reaction to the information, not being a destiny lore junkie, is the Gardener represents a desire to create and build complex structures organically out of the simple elements, as Conway envisioned. The Winnower represents the constrains on that desire to create, perhaps you could say the rules of the game, practicality, or something else, regardless it's pretty obvious that the Winnower is constraining force on what the gardener wants to do. You can spin that out into a lot of other messages onto this story as it can have a lot of meaning despite it's relatively simplicity. I think the best way to frame the Gardener's motives, given how the story frames each of these flowers as representing something, is to say that the Gardener wants to give each of the flowers a chance to survive on their own merits as apposed to the Winnower who has determined that certain life isn't worth living. remenber we are hearing this from the Winnower's perspective so it's much more likely that the Gardener basically through a hissy fit than an ideological conflict finally reaching a head.
I have my issues with destiny 2 but the game creates this feeling of mystery and dread just at the sight of the pyramids. It's a masterclass in its atmosphere.
Byf, your work continues to reach new heights! I've spent hundreds of hours watching pretty much all of your Destiny lore videos. You just tell the stories the way the deserve to be told, Destiny has such an incredible story that it's just impossible to fit it all in to the playable game and you do an absolutely incredible job bringing them to life. You're a credit to the Destiny community my friend.

Exactly. The Traveler and The Pyramid both are essential, and the most important, forces in the universe. They're purpose is to maintain balance. They both need each other just as much as we need both of them.

Osiris said the Pyramids intend to punish Savathun for interfering with its attempts to communicate with us, so that's unlikely. Not to mention Savathun - much like Mara - wants to become God herself both the Darkness and Guardians threaten that.
He couldn't even finish parts of the planets it ate, without having to go in them and kill the vex shields, I don't know how this would go, but obviously he didn't want anything to do with it, he ran away
I literally spent the first 10 minutes of this video trying to figure out how I missed the opening cutscene in my playthrough. It was actually that hard to believe it wasn’t a bungie cutscene. Nice one, Byf.

After seeing the footage of the live event, I'm wondering if we almost suffered another Collapse. It seems like the Darkness tried to creep in again, and it got Mercury, Mars, Titan (and probably Saturn), and Io (and probably Jupiter). It came in a wave, and those 4 planets were the closest to the wave in terms of orbit. When the Dark Wave got to Earth, the Traveler decided that this time, it would stand and fight, and healed itself to push back the Darkness (possibly with energies gleaned from us Guardians; a source of power it didn't have before). This, in essence, means that we may now have a better picture of how the Darkness operates. It creeps slowly in, positioning and waiting, luring strong champions in to become its 'Guardians', and when it finally has enough strength, it attacks all at once, swooping in and Taking everything it wants. In this way, the Collapse would have been exactly as described- sudden, Dark, and acausal.
That intro was both chilling and beautiful. But we expect nothing less from Byf do we not? Thank you for all of your lore videos and content Byf. Looking forward to much much much more!
Got some similarities but so much more mysterious. Funny enough tho they too would take over the other enemy faction and alter them into a new life form. The main difference tho is what I like. The Darkness is doing it for our salvation where as the reapers are doing it just to preserve life.
@@gibster9624 Are you sure about that? Everything Ive read so far on the darkness says that it absolutely despises existance itself, because existance came to be when it fought with the light. So yeah, not really sure about the salvation part. Afterall, Chaos also promised freedom and all it did was to corrupt the Primarchs....

The beginning gave me chills. I've always found Byf's voice quite soothing (it's very nice to fall asleep to, lol), but that opening made me realized he can actually sound quite sinister if he wants

stasis is the darkness version of our light abilities, and like the light, there will be different versions of stasis, not different versions of darkness abilities
@@frenchwaffl Stasis is one damage type. In the newest ViDoc, there's a shot of someone switching from your typical set of Arc, Solar and Void subclasses to their "Darkness subclasses," as the game itself puts them. Of course, the only one listed so far is Stasis, but I'm fairly certain there will be new Darkness elements added in the further expansions.

@@kaladinstormblessed8790 The way I understand it, Stasis is just one form of the Darkness, similar to how Solar, Arc and Void are just different forms of the Light. There is no one true power of Darkness, at least not that we can wield; its power can be manifested in different ways. Maybe the energy associated with the Taken is one of them, and we'll get a full-on Taken subclass in the near future. Probably in Lightfall, tbh, assuming it ever *does* happen.
I LOVE that the darkness is accompanied with music that has these unsettling warbles and pitch bends. Fantastic audio concept and design to fit the mood

The traveler kinda looks like the artifact you get inside the pyramid. 1:01:48 for traveler image with the lines and 5:41 for the artifact. They have simular patterns with the lines.
you probably have heard this story from the outside several times. like the lore around warcraft and prince arthas. but people finally start to understand parts of the innerworkings in the human psyche to depict it in art in a somehow understandable manner. there are still invisible bridges and inaccuracies in a lot of points but it's a big step in understanding in my opinion.
To this day, this is my favorite video of yours. Peak intro, peak story telling, peak lore. It's like I'm at a campfire listening to some deep folklore/legend wisdom
At 1:18:22 when I rounded the corner and saw the pyramid my heart dropped. I invest a lot into destiny and get very immersed in it so when I had no idea that was coming it left me reeling.

@Владимир Волков if you are talking about English subtitles then it would literally take about an hour half. Translated version might take a while depending on who they found to do them
@Владимир Волков you realize that there's a script. When you're talking about closed captioning for English you can just work from the script and then it's just a matter of time sync.

At first there is nothing shown however someone figured out that if you line up the gifs so that they play 400 miliseconds after each other they show letters. And so the same person created a program which recorded all the letters shown. All of these letters made a couple of pages of lore which was missing from the collectors editions. (in the collectors edition there was a book full of lore however there were pages ripped out and so this ARG recovered those pages.) The lore hints at the new raid boss.

So the darkness is: only the strong deserve to live and the weak will die, and the light is the disruption of that balance because it wants all life to have a fair chance to live life to its fullest. The random and sporadical pattern of fair chance upsets the equation of the flower game, that 1+0=1. 1 being the strong and 0 being the weak, the strong are born deserving to live, thus order is guaranteed as the end of the pattern will always be the same, as the outcome is always the same. But the light wants 1+1=2 endlessly, an even chance for all life to grow strong and love each other in appreciation of light's life's answer, peace. If everyone is 2 then there is no gain, nothing to prove, just an endless random pattern of unending life.
I get what the darkness wants, order in a chaotic universe that knows no bounds, for the betterment of all life, if you're born a 0, then you won't waste space or have a doomed chance at life, because what's the point in letting something that can't live, live, it's cruel. But but the cruelness of the 1s conquest to end 0, is what ultimately saves 0s from trying to live with a 100% guarantee of failure. Thus keeping order and the flower pattern ending the same over and over. But the light is far more optimistic, chaos breeds chance, if 1+1=2, then surely everything should be a 2, right? If everything is a 2, then everything has an even chance to survive, and thrive, and know the love of living, the world's greatest gift, being able to actually survive. The thrill of the 50% chance to actually make it, knowing you can if you try, and knowing everyone else can too. The flower pattern ends differently everytime, because life is everywhere, blooming without fear for being a 0 or hiding from a 1. Given me something to think about.

He seeks to rewrite the game by poisoning it with the sustenance of weak forces to add evermore complexity, he doesn't seek to add strength to the equation. Given your strong=1, weak=0 logic he'd be trying to make 1+0=2; which is plainly impossible. This actually makes it easier to understand why The Darkness was fretting so much when the Light was trying to turn itself into a new rule; he saw the pointlessness of the effort. That in the end, 1+0 would still equal 1; because it can be nothing else. It is the final shape.
As for which side to "support", The Darkness literally encapsulates the concept of victory itself. Him facing off against The Light can end in no other way besides his W; because he literally embodies such an occurrence.
Being strong is never wrong.

The dark simply wanted only the strong through natural selection but the light knew that not all "weak" races were actually weak just Givin a bad lot. The darkness didn't care and could only imagine 1 way for the game to end. The same way it alwase ends the strong over the weak. But Givin a chance to become strong sometimes the weak xan become even better than the strong. I.e humans on earth. Humans have the strongest guiding force of light and soon the powers of the neohumans and the ability to use darkness for the light. Which is unheard of in the galaxy. One of the weakest creatures is becoming the strongest all because we were Givin a chance. That's what the concept of light vs dark is in destiny. The darkness couldn't see into the future only what's has happened before and what's worked before regardless on what could be better. While the light can see the hope of the future and not being endlessly stuck with only 1 answer. While the darkness path will always win is it truly the best?
I believe that the Flower Game is based on Conway's Game of Life. what they are describing sounds like similar concept, Conway's game has 4 rules, and the flowers are pretty clearly analogous to life and death. Of course the Game of Life is actually a zero player game and is entirely deterministic based on your initial conditions so then obvious question is what to do the Gardener and Winnower represent in this. My initial reaction to the information, not being a destiny lore junkie, is the Gardener represents a desire to create and build complex structures organically out of the simple elements, as Conway envisioned. The Winnower represents the constrains on that desire to create, perhaps you could say the rules of the game, practicality, or something else, regardless it's pretty obvious that the Winnower is constraining force on what the gardener wants to do. You can spin that out into a lot of other messages onto this story as it can have a lot of meaning despite it's relatively simplicity. I think the best way to frame the Gardener's motives, given how the story frames each of these flowers as representing something, is to say that the Gardener wants to give each of the flowers a chance to survive on their own merits as apposed to the Winnower who has determined that certain life isn't worth living. remenber we are hearing this from the Winnower's perspective so it's much more likely that the Gardener basically through a hissy fit than an ideological conflict finally reaching a head.

I love the feeling of ominous dread mixed with shy curiosity that this lore and video produces...sweetly unsettling
After seeing the footage of the live event, I'm wondering if we almost suffered another Collapse. It seems like the Darkness tried to creep in again, and it got Mercury, Mars, Titan (and probably Saturn), and Io (and probably Jupiter). It came in a wave, and those 4 planets were the closest to the wave in terms of orbit. When the Dark Wave got to Earth, the Traveler decided that this time, it would stand and fight, and healed itself to push back the Darkness (possibly with energies gleaned from us Guardians; a source of power it didn't have before).
This, in essence, means that we may now have a better picture of how the Darkness operates. It creeps slowly in, positioning and waiting, luring strong champions in to become its 'Guardians', and when it finally has enough strength, it attacks all at once, swooping in and Taking everything it wants. In this way, the Collapse would have been exactly as described- sudden, Dark, and acausal.
i don't think it got Jupiter, considering... Europa. Jupiter still being visible and whatnot.

Got some similarities but so much more mysterious. Funny enough tho they too would take over the other enemy faction and alter them into a new life form. The main difference tho is what I like. The Darkness is doing it for our salvation where as the reapers are doing it just to preserve life.

stasis is the darkness version of our light abilities, and like the light, there will be different versions of stasis, not different versions of darkness abilities
@@frenchwaffl Stasis is one damage type. In the newest ViDoc, there's a shot of someone switching from your typical set of Arc, Solar and Void subclasses to their "Darkness subclasses," as the game itself puts them. Of course, the only one listed so far is Stasis, but I'm fairly certain there will be new Darkness elements added in the further expansions.
I think stasis might be a watered down version of the dark, and we might get a full dark subclass

@@kaladinstormblessed8790 The way I understand it, Stasis is just one form of the Darkness, similar to how Solar, Arc and Void are just different forms of the Light. There is no one true power of Darkness, at least not that we can wield; its power can be manifested in different ways. Maybe the energy associated with the Taken is one of them, and we'll get a full-on Taken subclass in the near future. Probably in Lightfall, tbh, assuming it ever *does* happen.

you probably have heard this story from the outside several times. like the lore around warcraft and prince arthas. but people finally start to understand parts of the innerworkings in the human psyche to depict it in art in a somehow understandable manner. there are still invisible bridges and inaccuracies in a lot of points but it's a big step in understanding in my opinion.

At 1:18:22 when I rounded the corner and saw the pyramid my heart dropped. I invest a lot into destiny and get very immersed in it so when I had no idea that was coming it left me reeling.
Just this little snippet about the anomaly would make a great Horror Film. A credit to the depth and quality of the writing in Destiny lore.
The production and writing on this video is by far your best yet!

@Владимир Волков if you are talking about English subtitles then it would literally take about an hour half. Translated version might take a while depending on who they found to do them
@Владимир Волков you realize that there's a script. When you're talking about closed captioning for English you can just work from the script and then it's just a matter of time sync.
