You may be able to adjust the tensioner knob although I found it is a bit stiff no matter what. Adjusting the height of the peddles may help, before tightening the knob. I find if the peddles aren't really going high, it helps with the stiffness. It does become easier a little once I get going with stepping.
Once you pull the pedals loose and raise one, I think to the overall height you want the peddle to go you have tighten that screw on thing more until the cable is tight to the wheel. I hope that makes sense! ❤️

The point of trouble I had was tightening the cable, then lifting the one step and tightening again. So that the step then engaged. It's not explained well in the included instructions.

I did, works great, it just needed the cable tightened.
