The end of Hawthorns era of dominance that began 20 years earlier.
    '71, '76, '83, '86, '88, '89 and '91 premierships along with runners-up in '75, '84, '85 and '87.
11 grand finals in 20 years. What a time to be a Hawks supporter. Waiting 17 years until 2008, seemed a long time though we then won 4 times and finished runner- up once in 8 years.
A flag in every decade from the 1960s thru the 2010s.
Mathews, Peter Hudson, Tuck, Dunstall, Brereton, Franklin, Ayers, Mitchell, Hodge, Rioli, Scott, Dipper, Knights, so many others. Such great players. The greatest team of the last 50 years, never again will we see such dominance. GO HAWKS!!!

Interesting production in this Grand Final. A lot more snapping to close ups compared to the last 15 years. It sort of makes the game harder to watch on TV. AFL is played on such a big ground that wide angles are easier on the eye.

No, it was ridiculous what Hawthorn was allowed to do to West Coast players by the umpires. The early 50 mtr penalties against Hawthorn should have been awarded more times than the two. Chris Lewis was attacked so violently early by his opponent resulting in concussion and minimal memories of the game.
      It was a disgrace.

West Coast supporter here, miss this tough brand of footy, the 2 best teams of 91 slugging it out for 3 quarters, but the experience of the hawks won out. Have not watched it since the day but appreciate the champions of the mighty hawks, dermot,Ayers and prichard were amazing not to mention dunstal's lazy 6 goals

@@louispodob it was a great era of footy. today's games just aren't the same and the umpires often become the extra men for the winning team. I've grown tired of listening to the scripted commentary and the result being decided by umpires. It feels like the results are pre determined
Back in the 90's and beyond, most games were decided by sheer will power of the players. They gave their all.

That was when players could not only kick drop punts, were not afraid to kick drop punts and could actually kick goals with drop punts. An era badly missed, but todays players have other skills I guess , but some of their skills are pretty lousy under pressure, One Hawk kicked the ball to the boundary line , "NO DELIBERATE" nor it should be, those types of frees now are game killers and unfair, along with a few other stupid frees, the umps did OK that day, but how hard was that game, then you look at the Geelong Hawthorn 1989.
I wonder how many frees they'd give away if those two clubs played today the way they played then , there'd be 50 goals each from free kicks and 50 metre penalties.

Its April 30 2023, and if anyone watched Collingwood v the Crows they would have seen an umpiring debacle and a confusing free kick ridden mash of players forming packs and wrestling matches over loaded forward lines and two extra clubs invented that should be there.

It was blowing a gale. Waverley Park had a strange breeze which cut across the ground due to one side having huge grandstand and the rest of the ground being levels 1 & 2. Then, in between the scoreboards there were gaps through which the wind would blow like crazy and swirl the ball. I saw players kick drop punts at Waverley Park which ended up going backwards over their heads. Some days it was a 10-12 goal breeze to one end.
