    The way they played in the prelim against Collingwood, they were never going to lose this. I heard an interview with Leon Baker years later. His record in Grand Finals is ridiculous playing in winning GF teams in 80, 82, 83, 84, 85 and then when he finished at Essendon went back to the bush and played in winning GF teams in local sides.

    • @RalphvsSam
      @RalphvsSam Месяц назад

      Contrast that to Paul Weston's Glenelg career where he played in 5 losing grand finals and then another losing GF with the bombers in 83 before cracking it in this match... What a player he was and he would've been mighty relieved they won this day.

    "Is that a mark to Essendon? Or a Hawthorn mark?" Landy hilariously hopes at 21:26 , as Roger Merrett stands alone holding the ball over his head. Landy had a shocker the last quarter, clearly cracking the shits because Hawthorn were losing.

    One of my favourite GF's (from a Richmond supporter). Peter Landy getting all stroppy in the commentary box. The crowd reaction when Baker put Essendon in front (he had a pretty handy two weeks coming off 6 in the prelim). Hard to believe that champion Hawthorn team fell in such a hole.

      We'd been to nearly every Dons match for the three previous seasons. We were getting closer with every game to them and had high hopes after the second-semi. Had tickets to the GF the previous season and went to the Cox Plate instead of witnessing the mauling but couldn't get tickets to this....we were jumping up the living room walls by the end....

      They rarely suspended players for reportable incidents in grand finals until it was pointed out the grand final was the games showcase.Ironicly, the league decided to get tough in 1990 and Terry D was the first victim of the policy change.His punishment was so severe, it virtually finished his career.

      @RCT1963 4 года назад +4

      Matthew Vicendese 110,000 went the previous year so that blows your theory away. Here’s the reasons why it was lower than usual. ‘The attendance of 92,685 was the smallest at an MCG grand final for 29 years. The match was the first grand final played in the aftermath of the off-field dispute between the League, which wanted to stage the grand final at VFL Park, and the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Cain state government, which wanted to stage the grand final at the MCG. Under the terms agreed to in early 1984, an area in the Members' and Olympic Stands was set aside for 44,000 MCC and VFL Park members, but only 31,000 attended, leaving a large vacant area at the top of the Olympic Stand. Uncertainty about the new arrangements, accusations that the demand for members tickets had been overestimated, and breezy and cool conditions in the wake of a heavy overnight hailstorm were all considered to have discouraged many spectators from attending.’ From Wikipedia but nonetheless accurate.
