Honestly, as an American I remember what a cracking game I thought footy was when I discovered it back in 1984 flipping through channels. It made me barrack for the game itself whenever possible.
For a few years I lost track of footy but I never lost my admiration for it. In the 2000's I reconnected with now AFL football and remember Sydney's GF win in 2006.
I really began to seriously watch AFL footy in 2010, the GF draw fascinated me, the goal saving smother by Heath Shaw of Riewoldt's kick on the goal line in the replay.
I decided to chose an actual team to barrack for for the first time. Incredibly enough I chose the Hawthorn Hawks and was bitterly disappointed by 2012, fortunately, Hawthorn gave me a cornucopia of GF wins to soothe that loss to the Swans.
I have tried to watch as much of Hawthorn history as possible having watched many of the other GF wins, interviews and videos about the Hawks over the years, I can proudly say I have watched the last four GF wins many many times and several of the older ones, now including this one.
It is amazing to me how far the game has come from my first exposure to it.. from this era. I can truly say that while there were obvious names that I know from the past that are involved in today's game (or used to be) like Rodney Eade or Lethal Leigh, some record breakers like Michael Tuck, some all timers like Ross Glendinning among others... what most surprises me about this era is how much more skilled today's players are, how many more marks they take, how many more kicks that find their mark, how many more creative kicks for goal from sharp angles, how much of the time players then just kicked the ball as far as they could. While that still happens a bit, often enough, kicks are booted down field with amazing accuracy in today's game. I will admit that goal kicking accuracy seems to have lessened a bit, but overall skill levels have risen sharply, the speed of modern players is astounding, as well as the fitness. I can safely say that today's AFL is a far more pleasing product to my eye. I saw the merit of footy back then, but I am awed by the beauty of pinpoint 50 meter kicks to a teammate, end to end rushes of the amazingly swift. The incredible talent of men like Cyril Rioli and Eddie Betts... Australian Rules Football continues to be a joy to behold and only increases as the years go by. Good on ya AFL, carn the Hawks!

You've taken in this game even before I have. All I vaguely recall is a Moncreif early mark & goal and then a pot of beer sent to me after the game from the publican for all the barracking (and I assume drinking) I had done.

What a day this was. I was in grade 6 and my father and I sat in the middle deck of the Northern Stand. Magic Day! What stars, Don Scott, Mathews, Kelvin Moore, Peter Knights had pop star status. Tucky, a very young Dipper. I was 12. 🏆🍾🏆🍾

Dipper was actually the replacement for David 'Rubber' O'Halloran in the starting 18 - who did his knee the week prior- after having played every game that season.... Much like Knights had done in 1971.....Dipper was generally considered to be best afield that day, so it was quite a stroke of fortune for Hawthorn.... Not so much for David though....I reckon Barney's third quarter was the decisive factor myself.

They got Barassi in to coach them & were the only side to take advantage of the so-called '10 year rule'; Where they signed Doug Wade, John Rantall, Brent Crosswell & Barry Davis in the one off-season. 3 of them were former Captains & Best & fairest winners at their original clubs....So it was prefaced upon a huge injection of experience & leadership....not to mention half a dozen Sandgropers & Croweaters, including Cable, Blight, Glendinning, Henshaw Gumbleton, Cassin etc, etc.

@@alansimmonds9030 2 zip hawthornes way,,,, they were lucky to get that close in 75,meven the umpires couldnt keep them in the game,, the hawks style was out dated, hence the reason they often played dirty,, not tough , dirty and lee mathews has the record to be the only player charged with a crime for on field assault.
scott, lee mathews the sniping coward and dippa , he and scott were damn good players too , so its sad because they had some real talent in the team that played the ball, the fact north had enough muscle and skill to put them to bed was a testament to north tenacity at the time.
