    I don't think I've ever seen a car review where the wheels have been removed and details of suspension and brake components have been covered. Great under bonnet coverage too. An object lesson to other reviewers.

      Excellent, happy to hear the positive response. You can learn a lot by checking out different designs, hoping to show these, and over time be able to point out much more unique differences.

      @@EngineeringExplained , agreed, great job i especially liked seeing the fuctioning air channels to cool the brakes. i wouldve liked a little info on the 'normal' driving mode as i almost never drive as _enthusiastically_ as was shown in this test drive.

    Dang, I don't think Lexus gets enough credit for how good their cars are.

    • @TheJmiktutt
      @TheJmiktutt 10 лет назад +12

      I honestly think they get too much credit. I can't speak to the GS, but for the price, the IS was woefully underwhelming in almost every regard. I would have loved to love Lexus. I come from an all Toyota family, but they just don't seem to measure up to the competition.

    • @TheZigZagg
      @TheZigZagg 10 лет назад +26

      jmiktutt
      Lexus is the highest raking vehicle manufacturer for dependability, since the 90's except for a few random years.
      (JD power vehicle dependability study 2014)
      They actually beat the competition by a large margin, in problems per 100 vehicles.
      Lexus is at 68, mercedes benz 104, Cadillac 107.

    • @TheJmiktutt
      @TheJmiktutt 10 лет назад +6

      TheZigZagg I will concede that point. I have no doubt that they are incredibly dependable, but as far as being fun or comfortable, I found them far outclassed. I much prefer Infiniti in those categories.

    • @mcearl8073
      @mcearl8073 7 лет назад +17

      jmiktutt which IS are you referring to? There's about a 100 hp difference between the 250 and the 350 so I have no doubt the 250 will be underwhelming. The 350 is a very fun car to drive

    • @TheJmiktutt
      @TheJmiktutt 7 лет назад +4

      It was indeed the IS 250. I'm sure there's a big difference, but if I remember right, going to the 350 changed the price bracket by a considerable amount. That said, I can see that it was a prejudice I held that was over the top. If I ever end up shopping in this category again, I'll definitely give them another try.

    This is one of the greatest vehicles ever made. I bought one in 2013, it's a RWD and it still drives like new, it has a soul and character. Some people will not understand, but I suggest you go and test drive this vehicle and you will get it.😂
    The 3.5L V6 likes to be revved and it has one of the most exciting induction sounds.
    We are a family of four and the vehicle has ample space for our long trips and the boot is huge, I must say.
    All I do is change the engiine oil & filter every 5000 miles or 6 months, ATF and Coolant every 50,000 miles or 5 years and the rear diff every 30,000 miles or 3 years, and I buy all the fluids and filters from the dealership..
    Brian from South Africa.

    Excellent review. Nowadays nobody does an actual review of the car. It's all just a bunch of automotive journalists that are more concerned with writing/delivering clever dialogue while they simply tell me their subjective or vague opinion on the car. I love how much detail you provided. This would be so much more helpful for someone who is actually interested in buying this car...assuming they actually know a thing or two about what you are showing them. But I guess if they don't...they can watch you other videos :D

    It's kind of hard to tell in the video, but the suspension on these is so overbuild it's insane. I've seen front ends of 1/2-ton pickups that aren't as beefy as the back end of the GS. Take note folks, this is how you build cars that last.

      I have a 2014 GS 350 AWD White w/ Flaxen leather...it is an amazing vehicle. It's fun to drive in sport mode when opening it up and around turns, but it can also just be a joy to cruise around in and enjoy as a quiet smooth luxury car. Unless I make a huge leap financially and can move up to a Porsche Taycan or Panamera or something like that, I've pretty much made my mind up that I will be a Lexus owner for life.

    Great review! I bought this car for my wife and it is a really good fit for her. She likes the interior (Flaxen), and other amenities. I personally find the car comfortable but way to numb for my tastes. My wife now, she loves that aspect because she spent years with my cars that are loud, manual transmission and required more driver input. But I did find the car fun in sport mode and mashing the throttle to the floor. Now this car is no ballerina and I think a rotrex supercharger (450whp) will make this car more fun!

The only thing you didn't cover was the 4WD system, if it only turns on during traction loss, or if it is a full time system. I'd definitely like to see more reviews when you explain the mechanics of the cars; the real world applications of the systems you explain in most of your videos are very interesting.

    I like how technical you get! If I had one thing I would like to add is that objectivity is good, but subjectivity gets the message across... Cool video. One advice, upgrade to a camera that has 1080p, and the video quality would improve a lot, 1080i looks terrible

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 лет назад

      I use a Canon HF M40 which records in 60 fps 1080i and converts to 30 fps 1080p. Is this not truly 1080p? Trying to figure this out, thanks!

    • @weed46
      @weed46 10 лет назад

      Engineering Explained What I see is 1080i. When you see movement in your recording you can see some jagged lines wich are the interlaced frames, and this happens:
      cnet3.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/2012/10/02/a566a17a-fdb4-11e2-8c7c-d4ae52e62bcc/275f90369fd1a0719cf6cfb67e2e2e55/Elephant_1_interlaced.jpg
      The conversion to from 1080i to 1080p is always flawled because it is stacking frames that aren't recorded at the same time.
      I only noticed in this video, don't know if you record with the same camera in the other videos, because those don't seem recorded at 1080i, can't see tha interlaced frames

    I want to say great review! This is one of the only new car reviews I have seen where the tire was removed and suspension was analyzed. I have only a few constructive criticisms, and they all come to your head mounted view. Now I must say that this is a view that you MUST keep in your videos, it is a great one to have, but for one I would try to move your head alittle slower. The camera got quite a bit of blur during a swift head turn. Second the sound was very lack luster, I dont know if you were using an iphone or a gopro but I know with a gopro external mics are a possibility. I am sure such a thing can be done with an iphone as well. This would help bring your videos up a notch. Now onto suggestions... Something that you MIGHT want to bring up in future vids is user repair-ability, Like I noticed the NON PRESSED in upper ball joint.... a huge plus for a DIYer. Maybe not a whole section dedicated to it, but if you see something that was well thought out in that aspect bring it to our attention. All in all great review and I look forward to seeing your future work!

      Great suggestions, should certainly keep my head movements slower for the GoPro shot. Also, I ordered a mic. Won't have it for the Subaru review, but should be available for the next one.
      Cheers!

    I test drove the GS350 F sport yesterday. I was truly expecting and hoping to fall in love with this car but no such luck. I just could not get over the horrible lag it has from the time your feet hits the pedal and it actually pushes the car forward and the driver backward. Torque torque torque!!! When will the Japanese learn the importance of torque!!! The body roll was pretty bad as well. Given it was not an AWD model but I don't think it matters.
    Oh well guess I'm stuck with the ultimate driving machine.

      Roma Vic thats odd, i drive like a maniac and i find this car has very little body roll, especially in sport+ mode. There is a bit of lag at times i did notice that but i personally think this car is fantastic

    Had an f sport come into my shop, I think it was an IS. Smoked the front rotors I quoted them pads and rotors from lexus. Was over 1300$, there out of warranty at 12k miles. The other thing is Lexus is still having alot of trouble with the gdi, tons of carbon builds up on the valves most dont make it to 20k miles before they need a set of valve springs and de-carbon, if not an entire engine rebuild. Thats covered under warranty tho since they never make it to 36k before valves start sticking. I think engine repair is 5 year 50k. I love Lexus, its actually all I do now, but the direct injected engines just are not what expected after years of the 4.3 UZ and 3.0 JZ engines. See how much foam there is under the engine cover? Thats cause the engine is loud as heck compared to the better engineered engines of old. When you change the oil filter it has a paper cartridge insert most of the time it looks like extra crispy KFC in there. Its just cheaper to make stuff that breaks, and you sell more parts when your engines dont last 25 years ie 1UZ ect...

      hondatech5000 Interesting info - this one's actually GDI and Port injected.

    • @hondatech5000
      @hondatech5000 10 лет назад

      Engineering Explained I forgot the 350 has both, i must be thinking of the 250 and 460, or 2.5 and 4.6. I work at an independent shop since 2010 thats when I converted to a Lexus Tech we send em out to the dealer when they are covered under warranty.
      The port injectors clean up the gdi problem. What happens with no gas on top of the valve theres nothing to clean it up like in a 250. Ive thought of a couple different things that would prevent it from happening but, as far as I know they just repair the damage from the carbon and dont actually do anything to fix it. Ive seen pic where the carbon is so packed in it completely blocks the port off, when you take the valve out of the head there is a valve shaped impression in the carbon.
      for example: Injector Nozzle that fans the fuel far enough back that some hits the valve while its open.
      or a piston dome shape that deflects some fuel from the spray to curl around to hit the back of the valve. or how about a single port injector mounted behind the throttle body that sprays above 2500rpm or something.

      Very attainable purchasing a pre-owned one. A few thousand down and a few hundred a month and you got a 3 year old GS that'll run and look good for 10+ years should you choose to keep it that long.

    Jason,
    Just wanna give a shoutout to Engineering Explained. I think car fans have had too much of the artificial and macro car reviews (heavily reliant on videography and photography) and most of us commoners just want to know more technical descriptions of our cars exactly like what you're doing in this Lexus GS350 F Sport.
    Please do other cars as well for example perhaps a BMW 335 sports or 6 series.

  • @YourMajesticKyng

    Excellent quality for your first review, this car is nice aswell, but under that engine cover is a hideous sea of everything all over the place which in my opinion should be nicely organized as far as engines go.

    Aweseome review , every car review should be like this , question for you what u rather drive Lexus IS 350 F AWD or GS 350 F AWD ???

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 лет назад

      Have not driven the IS, I'd assume the GS is a bit nicer based on price. If AWD wasn't necessary for you, I'd probably opt for the RWD with rear steering. It's a lighter car and the rear steering is a cool touch, never tested it out before though.

    not bad...this car didn't come with anything that the other cars don't have. in fact most of the features in it have been used in other european cars made in the 90's. the leather on the gear knob of the automatic transmission to make it look like a stick shift is a joke! I hope it has a better reliability though. Thumbs up , Thanks for the review

  • @Danu01c

    You forgot to mention how annoying the manual mode is. If you change gears before the car think its right it won't. If you change gears exactly at revline since the car changes gears weather you want to or not on revline the car will give you your gear and another additional one that the car was going to change. First time I gave it a punch I changed to 3rd exactly at revline just like in my IS and it ended up in 4th. So far that's the only annoying thing I've found on the GS. Manual mode is supposed to give you control, not a bit of control.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 лет назад +1

      I wasn't a fan of the manual mode, but I never am with auto trans. If it's going to have paddle shifters I'd prefer a DCT. The auto mode was fine.

    Very detail and different with the review! getting explanation on how stuff works while reviewing how does this car drive, nice job my friend! But just one thing to ask.. is it bad to rev and have fun with your engine like you did in the video? With a fairly modern car of course, like 2013-2015 Lexus, Honda and many others.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 лет назад

      Yu Huang High revving means more wear and tear, but a redline is set so that no detrimental damage to the engine will occur. An engine driven hard will not last as long as an engine that sees much lower stresses and pressures, but that doesn't mean both can't last for a very long time. Modern engines are quite good, and very few will ever fail to meet warranty. Especially Lexus, who consistently ranks at the top for reliability.

    • @yuhsin2006
      @yuhsin2006 10 лет назад

      Engineering Explained Thank you for explaining! Maybe I should put less stress on my Accord.. although Honda is also one of the makers that sits pretty high on reliability but I don't want to risk it.
