Remember when every town had an outfitters. Not Saville Row but you could always pick up an overcoat or a duffel coat or duffel bag even. A thick woolen jumper. They were good family businesses which sold everything. And the places which were the official shops for school blazers and uniforms and sports kit. I know one in hampshire still going strong for over a hundred years. The inside of the shop is unchanged. The fittings and furnishings are great. I think there’s a nostalgia for the things which were made well and remind us of when life was simpler and people produced things well and provided a good service.
The internet is killing the high street shops . Plus outrageous business rates and taxation. I still get my Guernsey jumpers from a family business on the island who still use the 1930s machines and only British wool. The sections are still sewn together by hand, Guernsey Woolens and Le Tricoteur. I have a lovely pair of mustard heavy cords. Brilliant for the winter.
