The voices of Ian Brown (Stone Roses) and Tim Burgess (Charlatans) sound similar because they're both from Manchester, as were The Smiths, The Happy Mondays and Oasis. The first round of the Madchester sound The Charlatans were one of the big three. Happy Mondays and Stone Roses being the other two.
Charlatans received criticism unfairlyfor being stone roses copies but they have banging tunes and thirty years later they’re still playing live love them
Those lyrics about everyone’s been burned are taken almost word for word from a song called Everybody’s been burned on the younger than yesterday album by The Byrd’s from 1967
Ah The Charlatans, they're one of the great survivors of the British music scene. They've been around and together over 30 years, and in that time they've gone through the wringer. They lost a member to a prison sentence, when he was involved in an armed robbery on an off-licence. After his release, that same member died just a few days before the Charlatans were due to support Oasis at Knebworth in front of 250,000 people (they did the gig with the keyboard player from Primal Scream.) A few years later their band manager robbed them, costing them hundreds of thousands of pounds, and then they lost their drummer to a brain tumour. Despite all that, they keep releasing album after album, and are simply outstanding live. I'd recommend One to Another, How High, Forever, or Oh! Vanity next. 👍
The Charlatans had a few great albums, they were always one of my favourite bands of that era. I can always go back to them and listen to their albums.
Their second most recognised song by the Charlatans is One to Another. Very unique due to its strong rock piano being the prevalent instrument. Definitely worth listening to, you'll fall in love with it! Maybe even more than "the only one". Our Manchester scene is similar to the Seattle revolution, one band after the next
Wow, this takes me back. 18 years old, full of "deep" thoughts (about the gals mainly I now realise), swaying away gazing at my own shoes, full of energy and happy as the proverbial pig in shit. The best times.
So not proud of this. I've done it for other bands/artists, too. As much as I've searched out new music over the years, I also had this habit of staying safe with 1 or 2 songs or just 1 album, and never opening up the curtains to see what else might be out there by them. But have started going against the grain on that in the last 2 years, and ramping it up more with this channel. - Greg
The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Oasis,, New Order, Happy Mondays, are Machester bands, The Charlatans are classed as a Manchester band although they come from just down the road and The Verve, and Elbow just up the road, all from the Greater Manchester area.
If you enjoyed this you'll probably like the follow-up single 'Then' which has a similar driving organ sound. One of the Charlatans contemporaries The Inspiral Carpets also used a 60's organ as an integral part of their sound, although they were slightly more pop. 'Saturn Five' might be a good song to try; very catchy, a real earworm.
What a great band!!! The Charlatans were huge on the UK Indie scene, easily taking their place alongside The Stone Roses and later Oasis. One of only a few bands that survived Oasis clearing up. Where to begin with a band that produced so much music? I'd suggest One To Another ruclips.net/video/yXs8zmfqXvg/видео.html
They started off by supporting The Stone Roses on tour and gained a decent following from that, this is the lead single from their debut album 'Some Friendly' from 1990. Their second album wasn't received as well as their debut and they had to kind of make a 'comeback' which they did with self titled 4th album and even more so with 5th album 'Tellin Stories' with is my favourite album of theirs. If i was to suggest some of their other songs to check out it would be 'Crashin In' , 'North Country Boy' and 'One to Another'
So glad to see a Charlatans reaction and even happier that you loved it. They don't seem to get the love out side the UK they deserve. I love all their albums and seen them twice in Australia!
The base switch is pure 'The Jam' as is the guitar after. The Jam taught all these bands what to do, If you know them then good, otherwise check out 'Billy Hunt'
As said before The Charlatans were amongst a few bands that were classed as Madchester or Baggy scene along with The Stone Roses, Happy Monday's, James, Northside, Flowered Up, Inspiral Carpets and 808 State, followers such as myself would wear Baggy or Flared Jeans and Bucket Hats
Greetings from Manchester. The Charlatans, like The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Northside, The Verve and even 808State all emerged from the Manchester area at the end of the eighties and early 90's and were collectively known as The Madchester scene. Musically they were heavily influenced by earlier Manchester bands such as Joy Division/New Order, post-punk indie guitar, psychodilia and the thriving dance music scene in Manchester from the sixties through to the eighties, especially the Northern Soul scene and it's obsession with imported Detroit music. Black Grape and then Oasis and then Elbow emerged in Manchester later.
Would you consider doing reactions to some Primal Scream songs? Perhaps Movin' on up or Loaded from the Screamadelica album or Jailbird or Rocks from Give Up But Don't Give Out. Mani from the Stone Roses joined Scream for a while when the Roses split up only to go back when the Roses reformed.
Greg here. I know some Primal Scream, mainly the radio friendly stuff from the 90's (ie, Loaded and Moving Up). Not sure how much Chris knows of them. Will look into it for sure.
@@intothemusic908 Funny you should comment on this. I was listening to some Primal Scream this afternoon in the car. Jailbird or Rocks from the Give Out but Don't Give Up album would be interesting to hear you react to.
Best reaction show on RUclips imo, loving the 90's Madchester stuff, try Pulps mis-shapes, also some newer Brit stuff like Foals-Neptune and Black Midi-Ducter
Would really love it if you moved onto Elbow, their music is sublime. Guy Garvey has such a great voice, a really surprising one that seems quite low and gravelly but then you find he can hit the high notes too and is so versatile
Thanks. Greg here. I personally love the song Mirrorball. Thinking of that as the first song to give Chris. Don't usually tip my hand...but not knowing a lot about the band outside that song and about 9 others, curious what the overall consensus is of that song?
@@intothemusic908 Hi Greg, there are so many to choose from as they've produced about a dozen plus albums and still working today. I think Mirrorball is certainly a great track. I would also suggest Scattered Black & Whites from their album Asleep In The Back and the first two tracks from their more recent album Little Fictions which are Magnificent (She Says) and Gentle Storm. Just beautiful music. Whatever you decide you can't go wrong Greg. By the way, I just love the banter between you two guys
This one, and "Then" are great singles. I also liked the follow-up album's song "Weirdo", but true, here in America they didn't do much business. Shame.
Amazing band. Love seeing reactions like this. The thing about them is their constantly changing sound. Check the Wonderland album out. Sounds nothing like this.

Try The Mock Turtles - Strings and flowers. Great tune.
Ahhh the 80s.. 90s charlatans stones roses Smith's the cult the strokes pixies the list goes on.. lived it loved it remained there....Great work guys
Thanks!
'Up to our hips' is a masterpiece. Amazing band....
I'll add it to my list of songs to react to. Thanks!

The whole album "Some Friendly" 1990 is just as great, very neo-psychedellic and groovy... you will be just as impressed.

The power of music, huh?
The Charlatans are really amazing. I could've told you years ago - why didn't you ask? ;-) Thanks for sharing your joy!
Haha you have almost the exact same taste as me. Too funny. Never thought I’d hear someone mention Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. Loved them! Grey Cell Green.
Imagine hearing "The Only One I Know", thinking The Charlatans were a 1 hit wonder and thus never having heard "Then"

You definitely should do some more Charletons. "Over rising" and "Just when you thinkin' things over" are great.

Swamp thing, by the Chameleons. Also North Star’s classic ‘Let’s take a trip’
The worlds most underrated band

One of my favourite bands so consistent have multiple strong albums. Great reaction keep up the good work

“Can’t Get out of Bed”. Second best single. ;)
I fell in love with this song during my first year at uni (that's college for you Americans).

Cheshire mate,never Manchester.
Nice one. Inspiral Carpets 'Saturn 5' is a good shout or maybe 'Joe'.
Good call, I always loved She Comes in the Fall and the song they did with Mark E Smith that I can't remember the title of.

they were great until Rob Collins past away. still good.
Please review old man by Neil young
Appreciate the request, but reaction wouldn't be authentic. We both love Neil Young...going back a long way with his music, including that song.
Great track, shit band to see live though
I'd have to disagree there... I saw them supporting Oasis at Finsbury Park and they were probably better than Oasis on the night
