I have since used the clairefontaine pastelmat and it is by far the best pastel paper I have ever used, thank you for this review, will help others decide on their preference..
Excellent review .in my opinion apart from pastelmat if you really need sanded paper the economical option is art spectrum pastel primer or golden primer on hot press 140lb WC paper.its 90% on par with traditional sand paper but pastelmat is unique it can't be mimicked.
Thanks for the comprehensive review! I love Fisher400 but def recommend finger cots with it tho- you’re right it’s hard on bare fingers on the first few layers. But I find the cot gives a smoother blend anyways.
Thank you Jason very informative as normal. Will definitely save me some money on items I was planning to try as new to pastels. Can I also say to anyone considering joining your patreon site, It is excellent and amazing value for what you receive. Highly recommend. I have been and are a patreon to other sites but Jason Morgans is by far the best.
I'd love to see this to as i have UArt ...to work on it i use artist tape to poster board an that works for me but i need to learn to mount to something little more rigid if going to sell
Great review! Although I have to speak more for Art Spectrum. 🤔 I've been using it for a bit now and I've never had issues with the misprint like you have; maybe you received a bad batch. In terms of layering, I use mainly a base layer of pastels and then use cp for the details. I can add 9-12 layers without using a fixative. Since I don't use oms, I don't need to worry about that. I guess the same can be said about Sennelier, if you don't use oms or fixative, it's still a good paper. I really enjoyed seeing the other papers because I've never used UArt or Fisher 400. 🤔 Thanks for the tips!
If they were significantly different in price, I could see compromising… But they all cost around the same thank you this was a very comprehensive comparison! as the very best one.
Thanks for doing that excellent review. You mention in passing that you almost never use white. I imagine that the darker paper has more of an undertone effect for the wildlife you generally do. When would you use, or recommend using, white paper?
In the USA we also have Pastel Premier paper by Speedball. It is 360gsm, cotton, PH neutral, archival and comes in fine and medium grit. It also takes water media.
Hi Jason! Since you mentioned the pronunciation on Mi Tientes… found this… how do you pronounce Mi-Teintes? Me Taunt, with a tiny 'uh' after the final t. 😊
Hi Jason, great video! I am getting a set of pastel pencils. I am a complete beginner, though I do have some coloured pencils. I am hoping to use the pastel pencils in combo with my coloured pencils. I am unsure which paper to choose between the UArt 600/800 or pastel mat. I want to be able to get good detail & from the video it seems the UArt papers might be best for this? Please could you suggest a good "starting out paper" for a complete beginner? Thank you in advance! : )
Hello Jason. Thank you for this test. Could you please tell me which paper is suitable for Polychromos? I would like to blend them for a blurry background and also Details. I tried so many papers with rough surface, Canson and Strathmore for example. The colour abrasion is good but blending and layering ist hardly impossible. I don’t want to buy chalk because I don’t like the dust and also I don’t want to work with solvents.
Why spend a small fortune in buying pastel paper when you can make your own using Golden Fine Pumice Gel as a substrate on ANY surface. Far cheaper and best quality!

Thank you so much. I am using the Mi teintes Touch for many months and I am very happy with it 😊

Excellent review and I like that you weren’t biased even though you have your favourite.
Great comparison of pastel papers! Thank you!!
I love how your did this review!! the visuals make it so easy to understand :) Pastelmat is my favorite for many mediums
Thank you. I'm just beginning to get interested in pastels. This helped.
Thanks Mr. Jason 💜 enjoy your comparison & review! 👍🏼

i have a video already on that ;)
Thanks for another awesome review Jason!
Thank you Jason! Great comparison!
Love this review and all your reviews ...you do a great comparison and are very fair in your assesments!
It might be over sensitive to water and solvents, but colors and layering looks absolutely great on Sennelier pastelcard.
Thanks for this Vedic it’s very helpful

Thank you for the kind words 👍
Thanks Jason, really helpful as always. Do you have a video on how to mount the Uart paper onto a board?
no , doing one now
I'd love to see this to as i have UArt ...to work on it i use artist tape to poster board an that works for me but i need to learn to mount to something little more rigid if going to sell

Yep. Each to their own. I just said what I saw. I paid a lot for that pack of that paper and most sheets had missing print areas on them .
@@wildlifeartjm Yes, which is a shame because they are a bit expensive. 😅

Really Great Demo About Sanded Surfaces .
Thank you so much for this comparison, it was very helpful--especially to me as a beginner!
Thanks for doing that excellent review. You mention in passing that you almost never use white. I imagine that the darker paper has more of an undertone effect for the wildlife you generally do. When would you use, or recommend using, white paper?
only when the subject needs VERY light / vibrant colours like on a bee / flower drawing i did.
In the USA we also have Pastel Premier paper by Speedball. It is 360gsm, cotton, PH neutral, archival and comes in fine and medium grit. It also takes water media.
I wonder which one Jason prefers as I bought both….

Awasome review! Thank you!
Was given a pad of Canson mi-teintes (not touch) trying to find out if it is suitable for oil pastels?
Hi Jason, whats the difference please between the mi teintes "tex" v touch
Can you prep the more inexpensive papers with a ground to make it more usable?

Wonderful. Thanks so much.

Try fabriano artistico
thank you for your sharing..
i prefer to use sugar paper or rice paper where i can easy here in Malaysia. without discredit to all those pastel paper made by few famous brands.
I tried a cheaper paper to save some money. The pastels literally fell off the paper.Waste of money.Pastelmat is the best.!
O love velour, however it doesn't work well with pencil
Can someone summaries it?
Why spend a small fortune in buying pastel paper when you can make your own using Golden Fine Pumice Gel as a substrate on ANY surface. Far cheaper and best quality!
there is velour paper.
If I purchased paper with those white spots like you got on the Art Spectrum, I would send that shit back.
