Sorry, but I disagree. I love my M10-D so much more interns of the controls and design. I felt that this Leica M11 is just an after thoughts. I love the fake film advanced lever, the ISO dial and the bottom plate from M10-D. The only thing that I wish the M10 (in general) have is the internal drive. Great video!
@@TheMPhotography Sorry I hope I didn't came out sounding harsh, yes it is personal taste. BTW I also own a Leica M11 and I guess to me taking out ISO dial to make the M11-D was a little too little of a change to me if that makes any sense. Anyway, as I said great video! I really enjoy the review :)
Hi Markus - great video. I also own a Leica M-D (262) and really like the camera a lot. Also am using a Hasselblad X2D100c for high res projects or work. But my heart is in the D-Type Leica cameras and I have owned the M10-D for a year and am using an M7 as well. I watched your M-D homage before getting my own and am glad I did. My own observations about the M11-D after trying out the camera at the wonderful Leica Hamburg store for an hour are: 1.) ISO Dial - is really in the perfect position for all those who are also using film based Leicas and it's great that they have returned to putting the iso back where it belongs to. And as Overgaard notes, it really is nice to rest the Thumb on the back which you would avoid on LCD type cameras. But what I didn't like is that there are no in between stops for the ISO settings unlik on on the M-D (262). Only full ISO steps and you have to turn a lot before getting to the next ISO. So if you work with manual ISO there is too much turning to do and it takes almost 360 degrees to go from lowest to highest iso. On the M-D this is better solved and you only have to turn half circle 180 degrees to turn from 200 to 6400. I understand that because of the automatic ISO the full circle makes sense on the M11-D but in real world usage I expect this to lead you to not use the manual ISO that much because it is too cumbersome to keep turning. 2.) Live View Sensor Reading - I think it is really a missed opportunity to not have a shutter based metering reading incorporated back into the M11-D. Like on all M11 models, when you turn on the camera, the shutter opens and stay open because the camera operates in full live view mode. So whenever you turn on the camera it sounds like a photo is taken and the sound is not loud but in portrait distance noticeable. Because of the full live view mode we also have the extended clicking which is longer than the M10/M-D shutter sound. So you never know exactly when the shutter takes the photo because we hear 4 steps (shutter closes, opens again for exposure, closes to finish exp then opens again for metering). Leica should have kept the curtain mode from the earlier generations to allow a non life view mode. And in the M11-D it does not make sense because unless you use the viewfinder, you don't have any benefit from live view. I believe that in the M12 we might see a come back of the curtain exposure reading. 3.) COLORS: I compared photos taken with M-D/M10-D/M11-D and the M11-D gives quite malleable files, not as good as Hasselblad but not too far from it. The white balance can sometimes be quite off. But the best colors came from M-D, then M11-D and the M10-D was quite neutral and least interesting. Most film like for me are still the M-D colors. 4.) Weight wise the M11-D is lighter but because the body is smaller, it feels still more dense than the M-D if you ask me. 5.) The surface of the M11-D has this texture which seems very resilient but not so nice to touch and I do prefer the patina of the black laquer. I am very curious how Leica is continuing their models. I feel the M11 is like the M9 of the future, mainly because of the live view sensor and there is a lot of room to improve. I think the triple resolution is a great idea but in reality the pixels are never combined (as their visualizations suggest) but instead pixels are simply binned. So all limitations and the most important being higher camera shake will stay the same, no matter what resolution we choose. So it seems to me that the M11 series are a brave new start with a lot of room to improve and I am not yet tempted but am curious how the Leica journey continues. Meanwhile enjoying a 2016 model that requires charging batteries once a week... 🙂 Anyways I thought your video is the perfect place to share my thoughts. Keep up the good work...
Hi 👋🏻, thanks for watching and you comprehensive comment. Very nice observations. I also realized the clicking noise when turning on the camera and even recorded it, but it didn't make it into the video. It doesn't just make click but it also vibrates if you turn the M11-D on while it rests on the table. With regards to the colors I share your opinion. Guess we both continue to enjoy our 2016 model. Also nice to read that you also own the Hasselblad X2D100c. A beast of a camera.
@@TheMPhotography Markus thank you. Have you made more observations regarding the color of the M11-D sensor in comparison with the MD? In what way are they different and which ones did you prefer?
great review and thanks for comparing the 3 MD lines and I agree, hope they keep releasing an M-D model with each new M body. For me, I could care less for continuous and timer selector being with the on-off switch, I think it gets very busy with the letters being on the top there. I will never if hardly use it. Again the argument will be its just sliding the lever one more click so why not have it. I think its all about taking away from the essentials. I love that now we have a base IS0 of framing 64!!. The original had it starting from 200 ISO. I own the OG M edition 60 which is a stainless version so makes it that much more special to me, I love durable materials. The type 262 M-D version is classy in the sense its got the black glossy paint.
Thanks for a serious review and your experience with MD. I have the original Leica MD. It is the camera that I have been most happy with throughout my 35 years as a professional photographer. BUT I have only used MD in my spare time. (I use a Q3 for my reportage photos) I just have the problem that I will have a lot of difficulty selling my original MD. 😢 Maybe if/when I get my M11-D it will work out. With the new M11-D I think I can use it for paid work as well. Because it is used together with the Photos app. Also, I can use the viewfinder on it. Not forgetting that the censor is better .. base iso 64 mm
Fantastic camera. I’ve never been able to really adapt to the large screens. Using an optical viewfinder and then an evf is just habit, so this should be the perfect digital Leica M body.
Yes, we all love black cameras with brassing shining through. Like the lever they skipped it for profit. And what material is the ISO wheel on the back? I hope not plastic.
I'm glad they didn't bring back the modes to the on/off switch. I had the M240-P, and many times I accidentally started the camera in continuous mode. I only shoot in single mode, so I appreciate the simplicity of this design. The only problem I have is that it lacks the ability to change the white balance in-camera. I never use Auto WB; I always switch between daylight and tungsten. It would be great if they added user profiles that could be switched in the rangefinder window menu.
I could imagine that it is possible to introduce user profiles and make them accessible via the fun button. But will they? Time will tell. But it could be possible. I like the idea 💡
Really love the concept of this camera. Would love to have the D style in Monochrom! One thing though, I feel like with digital cameras not blowing out highlights is critical, so on my M11M I use the histogram for high contrast scenes. I guess you can do that that with the visoflex, but then that seems to miss the point of the camera. As a M10-D user how have you managed exposing for highlights?
You can definitely do it with the visioflex. Without it, it is a matter of experience with the camera. Over time you know your sensor and the light metering. I don't run into issues with blown out highlights by accident. RE a D style monochrome camera. It would be wonderful but I would be surprised if Leica will go that far. The D is a very narrow niche and the monochrome is also a niche camera. Combined they would be in a super tiny niche.
Good video, but I think you’re a bit harsh on the M10-D. I love the thumb lever, and having exposure compensation on the back dial (a feature the M11-D is missing). I’ve also always liked the M10 family’s ISO dial location, even if it isn’t a throwback to the film cameras (although it does remind me of the MP style rewind knob). Finally I prefer the detachable baseplate to the M11 equivalent. So, thankfully for my wallet, I actually prefer the M10-D to the M11-D, so have absolutely no desire to upgrade.
Hi Marcus, this was right on time and fantastic as always. As this is not available at the stores to handle and check, I got an offer for Leica to pick this as soon as they have one, for a moment I was also thinking if I should let go my beloved MD, but I don't think I have the courage to do it. Your detailed review is helping me stay put. I got a chance to handle the M11 last year, however somehow I found the lighter weight a bit of a miss. Btw one thing I am curious about is the viewfinder on the 11-D. How was your experience with it? Thats the only thing I think could have been better on the M-D. Thank you!
Another feature missing, in my view, is the ability to format the internal memory (the SD could be done on the computer). I wish there was a way to do so in one go on the app (as opposed to, I guess, select all then delete all).
Great review! However, It has good changes and less great changes. It will be more clear when I see the next model later. It seems like they loose their strength.

I actually like the on/off switch on the M11-D. I hate the shooting options on the M240 because I'm always accidentally putting it on burst mode. I do prefer the M10-D design more because it looks more like the original film cameras. Leica missed the opportunity make the advance lever to take the next shot in single shot mode. Now that would be an awesome D model.
they gotta bring the thumb rest lever back, it just worked and was perfect!!! Made it look like a film camera with a new important feature of the lever - secure thumb rest!
@@ronitsingh85 I do like the lever but always thought it looked weird on the M10-D. It's short and stubby. Haha. But instead of serving as a thumb rest. They should mimic they film cameras as an advance to take the next shot.
@@IDaumI yeah, that maybe cool but getting away from what a digital camera is. Guessing you wind it and then only are able to click the shutter until you wind it again. Definitely it gets you closer to the film experience. Don’t get me wrong I love to wind the lever and have used film slrs, and rangefinder cameras and hear that mechanical click of the shutter button.
I don't know that Leica "cut some corners" by choosing to keep the on/off button to simply an on/off button and nothing else. I can see the logic behind it in terms of paying homage to the the film M cameras such as the M6 and keeping it as stylistically true and simple as possible. I think it was a brilliant choice.
Greetings from Zurich to Zurich! A very nice and inspiring video. I've been taking photos myself for half my life and am currently shooting with the SL3. A great camera. But somehow I've been thinking about digital photography for many years. As perfect as the pictures from an SL3 are and as easy to use as it is. Somehow this way of taking photos doesn't really appeal to me any more. That's why I'm actually thinking about selling my SL3 system and "downsizing" to the M11-D platform. I own a few analogue cameras, including a M6. So I have an idea of what to expect. Nevertheless, the appeal of taking this step is very great. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this. Best regards Andy
Hi Andy, The SL series and M are very different. If you don't rely on the SL system for your photography and you are already familiar and like the M6 then the M11-D is a great digital camera. Greetings back to Zürich from Zürich 😀
HI Marcus, Great to see you and great video. I have the Original MD but seriously thinking about the M11D. The only thing I don't like with the MD is I can't shoot in BW and need to convert the colour fils into BW and the files were in RAW, I prefer JPEG. But with the M11D I guess you can shoot in BW ( Setting into the App)? Would this be correct ? Thnaks, Dominique
I guess the question was if you can set JPG to monochrome on the M11-D. I am not sure it's possible. Do you know? I know you can generally set the shooting to JPG, but I assume those would be color JPGs?
My nightmare: going out in the morning and forget to switch to normal shoot after I set it to self-timer at night before. And I don't bring my phone. OMG ;)
Hi, this kind of product is only about shooting experience ! For the pictures showed in the video an iPhone could do the same job ! Nothing wrong with putting money on something providing joy ! But nothing to do with photography, sorry ! I'm also putting a lot of money in the shooting experience, so I can really understand, but my picture are not better, just the pleasure is much bigger (Leica M7, Nikon F4, Canon Eos 1-V, Fuji GX680, Rollei 6008 and Fuji GFX100).
Fully with you. It's all about experience. I talked more about it in my previous video. With regards to the photos in this video: I only had the camera for a very brief period. They for sure do bot show what the camera is capable of. I barely had the time to familiarize myself with the camera and make the RUclips video. The camera is of course capable of so much more. I was not expecting to have killer photos in this short of a time.
m10d doesn’t feel like afterthough at all… They introduced different button placement, mechanical ev compensation, wifi connection for menues, evf support and thumb lever. M11d feels like they didn’t know where to put thumb lever , as it’s on and off button there and they just scraped the Idea. I would love to have thumb lever on all leicas. But as someone who bought by now: m2, m4, mp, m240, m10, m10m, m10r ow yeah and m10d and two m11 plus sl2 and sl2s and lenses wise: 24lux, 35 cron, steelrim, lux, apo and 50mm cron, lux, apo I am finding hard to digest price of 9000 euros for newer models. ow Forogot i used to own q2 and q2m and 50 0.95 :D I steel keep around 40.000-50.000 euros worth of leica gear but started to move to hasselblad as prices are getting crazy even for my taste :(
the m10-d is a nice balance of a camera, I prefer ISO to be on the back and where the current ISO dial is on the top, the EV can be there! and yes the lever is essential and a must, great Idea, there Leica but somehow you got cold feet and took it out! it was not even an eye sore. I am sure many more complained about it so it was removed. The price is just too much to justify buy if you already own a few or even the previous body. around the $6k-$8k mark would be a good price. this kind of $$ is better spent on Leica lenses.
@@TheMPhotography At least the black paint of the original M-D 262 is more beautiful than that ugly black chrome finish. I also prefer the power/mode switch of my M8 and M9-P over the later just power switch. It is so much more convenient to use.
@Funktrainer yeah. The black paint with the brass beneath is amazing. The multifunction power switch is also what I prefer. Especially not having to go to the app but as I see in the comments, some love the simple on/off more. Everyone has their preference.
@@TheMPhotography I also like the natural light illuminated framelines more than the LED-lit. That's why I will probably stick with the silver chrome M9-P the next twenty years.
So one gets the new M11D. Then with complete surprise one finds that the only way to format an SD card or the internal memory Leica says go do it on your PC. What! Yes, that is true. There was no provision for formatting any memory on the M11D even through the Foto app. How could even the beta testers let this pass? Heck, with all the other M11 variants one can format both memories (SD card and internal) with a menu selection. How could one even imagine that Leica who wants to keep things simple with the M11D has just done the opposite by complicating a simple task of formatting memory. The M10D can format the SD card via the Foto app, but not the M11D. Why? How do I feel? Let down by Leica just when there should be a positive moment with a new camera. Surprised you did not mention this oversight by Leica software engineers.
Not saying the Leica M11-D isn't a superb camera, for me though the capabilities of the M11-D connecting WIFI to a mobile app destroys the simplicity one has in the original MD262. Too manny distractions to ruin the connections of the surrounding subjects that take away the film like experience of simplicity...!
There is nothing new about the M series. They are all the same with little variations between models for marketing purposes. The M camera line starts to be useable (i.e., with minimum problems) with the M11. The only good thing about the series is the M lenses and they can be used with other mirrorless camera (manual or aperture modes) like the micro 4/3 models. All reviews about the M11 series are the same (people keep repeating the same thing over and over).
No there is nothing new, this is even worse…. remove components but charge you more. Yet I bought one last night and couldn’t be happier. That’s just the point isn’t it? If you want it, buy it and don’t sweat over the small stuff. It’s just money. Money you make back.
Wrong, the M line was always usable, every single one of its iterations. And all of them keep up very well till today. You can't say that for most other cameras out there. Most reliable system out there with the highest build and image quality, perfectly suited for street photography.
Just a pointless camera. Just Leica showing to the world that they can do anything and their fanboys will all it all up, when it's totally useless for the digital age.
you would be surprised to see how it changes the process of taking photos and interacting with your environment... have you tried an lcd less camera? of course film based does the same trick and more authentic.
@@MagnusOlsen-t7qyeah, its for rich talentless lawyers who think they get Henri Cartier-Bresson’s talent when getting Leica. Boring samples in the end of the video just prove that.
I am an M10-D and I have the means to get an M11-D but unlike you, I don't think the M11-D is a step up, quite the contrary. I see no reason to have such a camera without an integrated thumb rest, a camera which is not as reliable as the M10-D and a camera I have to flip down to check my iso when I can just glance at my M10-D and see what my iso is set to anytime. This said, it is not something you seem to require as your iso dial was set to "A" for auto, there is nothing wrong with that but that's not how I work with a digital M camera. I set my ISO and shutter speed myself, I don't let my camera do that for me. The biggest problem with the M11-D, it remains an M11 prone to occasional freeze up and strange magenta colour cast, good thing it doesn't have a bottom plate as it saves time when doing a hard reset with any M11 camera model. I need my cameras to go "click" when I press the shutter, the M11, any m11 doesn't always work flawlessly to this day. (Let the vilifications begin...)
For details on dynamic range maybe you can look up other more technical videos on the M11-P. Where they share details on the sensor. The M11-D has the same sensor.

Then buy an m6, jeez.
Best regards
Andy
Hi Andy,
The SL series and M are very different.
Hi Dominique, I didn't pay attention if the shooting mode for JPEG could be set to BW in the app during the time I had the camera to try. Sorry
Yes you can set it to JPG and also decide if Raw or JPG and what resolution will go on card or internal memory like with all M11 models.
I guess the question was if you can set JPG to monochrome on the M11-D. I am not sure it's possible. Do you know? I know you can generally set the shooting to JPG, but I assume those would be color JPGs?
@@TheMPhotography Yes you can set it to BW only. I tried it in Sydney lovely camera but still debating if I will get one.
Thank you for checking. 🙏🏻 Greetings to Australia.
Damn sexy.. Both my kidneys are getting nervous that I'll sell one to fund this . lol Thanks Markus..
What is the startup time to take a shot?
It's not instant. I would say around 1s-2s.
Long live the Leica MD262...!
Indeed!
I hope you get one.
Hopefully one day.
Oooops! It's a loan.
Well, at least you get to try the new one.
Yes, it's a loan. I was fortunate to be able to try it for a little while.
@@TheMPhotography Nice! And well done to the Leica Store Zurich.
Enjoy!
Absolutely. I am very grateful for their incredible support over the years.
My nightmare: going out in the morning and forget to switch to normal shoot after I set it to self-timer at night before. And I don't bring my phone. OMG ;)
:-)
Would love it sans the lack of card formatting. oops will still get it but just sayin' Leica, fix the app for M11D card formatting
The Thump Lever made the D unique. You didnt mention this.
You mean on the M10-D? I mentioned it very briefly.
If ever I need a specialist camera to take pictures of walls and backs of cars I’ll think about it.
Would you sell prints ?
@ptrcksln yes.
So true
m10d doesn’t feel like afterthough at all… They introduced different button placement, mechanical ev compensation, wifi connection for menues, evf support and thumb lever. M11d feels like they didn’t know where to put thumb lever , as it’s on and off button there and they just scraped the Idea. I would love to have thumb lever on all leicas. But as someone who bought by now: m2, m4, mp, m240, m10, m10m, m10r ow yeah and m10d and two m11 plus sl2 and sl2s and lenses wise: 24lux, 35 cron, steelrim, lux, apo and 50mm cron, lux, apo I am finding hard to digest price of 9000 euros for newer models. ow Forogot i used to own q2 and q2m and 50 0.95 :D I steel keep around 40.000-50.000 euros worth of leica gear but started to move to hasselblad as prices are getting crazy even for my taste :(
Yeah. The prices for Leica are indeed hefty. But it looks like you have an impressive collection. 🙌🏻
the m10-d is a nice balance of a camera, I prefer ISO to be on the back and where the current ISO dial is on the top, the EV can be there! and yes the lever is essential and a must, great Idea, there Leica but somehow you got cold feet and took it out! it was not even an eye sore. I am sure many more complained about it so it was removed. The price is just too much to justify buy if you already own a few or even the previous body. around the $6k-$8k mark would be a good price. this kind of $$ is better spent on Leica lenses.
Why is there no silver M-D ?
If lonely knew 😉
You should. The M9-P is amazing. I will also stick with the original M-D for the time being.
Too bad only comes in aluminum
Yes. Goes a bit in the direction why the original M-D was more special.
would you buy this if you already had a M11P?
Probably not
So one gets the new M11D.
I would hope that this will be fixed soon with an update.
Yes, a pity.
Step righ up! For, only $15K, you too can take pictures of fences and street signs, or even fences with street signs!
dream.
If Leica would replace the worst App in the world maybe one could reliably control this camera....
Classic less for more …sure it’ll make the digital Leica boys wet their beds. The original M6 was the last of the real M series. 🤪😵💫😵
:-)
There is nothing new about the M series. They are all the same with little variations between models for marketing purposes. The M camera line starts to be useable (i.e., with minimum problems) with the M11. The only good thing about the series is the M lenses and they can be used with other mirrorless camera (manual or aperture modes) like the micro 4/3 models. All reviews about the M11 series are the same (people keep repeating the same thing over and over).
You get that some people like rangefinders, right?
To be fair pretty much all digital cameras are the same these days, nothing really interesting about them in the past 10 years
No there is nothing new, this is even worse…. remove components but charge you more.
Not everyone wants to crop the hell out of good lenses with M4/3.
This sounds like a person thats salty they cannot afford one ahahah
@@MagnusOlsen-t7qyeah, its for rich talentless lawyers who think they get Henri Cartier-Bresson’s talent when getting Leica. Boring samples in the end of the video just prove that.
No way to even format the SD card. I don’t know why anyone would buy this without an LCD. A bit of a poser camera.
Just another weird Leica model for dentists and the idle rich. 😂
(Let the vilifications begin...)
nice review. I want to buy a M11D now. I wonder how dynamic range in daily light of the M11-D. Can you share some raw images.
For details on dynamic range maybe you can look up other more technical videos on the M11-P. Where they share details on the sensor. The M11-D has the same sensor.
