Grew up in Iaeger, left in 1992. around that time was the fall of the coal and the rise of the drugs. Sad what has became of McDowell county. I went to school with Roger Gibson II.

Really well done. Thank you. Coal may have to make a big comeback, because the current supply of electricity is nowhere near the amount electric vehicles will be guzzling.

Wanted to enjoy a Meat Mountain in Mcdowell County, unfortunately there isn't an Arby branch anywhere, at least the documentary is good, with particularly great shots at 14:01.

As a Mass Com major/Appalachian Studies Minor and someone who traveled a lot of the backroads of Mercer & McDowell Counties back in my college days, this is a refreshing and truly insightful video. While you were able to talk about the negatives, that was in no way the focus. You focused on people and let them tell their story of why this is home to them and will always be. If you're ever down in the Knoxville, TN area I have some ideas for other videos you might be able to do. Keep up the good work.

I am from McDowell County. Our Brownie/Girl Scout troop marched in the Welch Veteran's Day parade every year. In 1963, Vice-President Lyndon Johnson was in attendance. Less than two weeks later, JFK was assassinated and Johnson became President.

Yes he did. They actually had new coal mines opening. The steel company that’s been shut down in Illinois for years was also reopened. To make good strong steal we need Coal. Things were moving along but guess who stopped it all. The other problem is the people in this area feel hopeless, they turn to drugs to not think about how bad things are and then they’re not worth employing. It’s a much bigger problem than just no work. When the government destroys peoples lives, it’s hard to come back out of that. Hopefully these next four years things will start to change, but the people will have to also change themselves so when employment opportunities come around, there were hiring.
