I Went Surfing on a Cruise Ship

- Well guys, I DID IT! I went on the FlowRider onboard Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas. It was absolutely terrifying but so much fun. We were only cruising to France, Belguim and the Netherlands which meant that the weather was really cold. It was around 15c which is around 70f. Asides from being cold and terrifying it was a lot of fun, I even managed to make it to my knees (on my first go!) which I am really happy about.

I've watched a LOT of people on the Flowrider during my Royal Caribbean cruises. If I find myself with nothing else to do, I default to visiting the Flowrider just watch people crash and burn... it's entertaining! I can confidently say I will never go on the Flowrider myself... I've seen too many embarrassing crashes! My point is... you did EXTREMELY well... amazingly well considering it was your first time... and you absolutely can be proud of how you did. And I have much respect for the dignified way you chose to end it! It shows a lot of grace and style. Nice video, and very enjoyable voiceover work on it.

I'm quite lucky I have no shame and endured several falls but eventually got quite good at the florider

You up on your knees all relaxed looking like you have been doing this the whole of your life is very impressive, even more so after listening to the litany of bad outcomes that have befallen others. Double Dog thumbs up for even having the guts to try it!
I've just seen this, and I have to admit you did much better than I !! Fell off a few times, and the force of the water just pulled my massive frame to the back! I did manage at the end to get my kness on the board...for a few seconds...before losing my balance...at least I got a nice cheer from the crowds..lol. This was onboard Oasis of the Seas - after it had been refurbished. Highly recommend Oasis type vessels now....all others pale into comparison!
There’s a reason why most Aussies will own a rashie or three (6 in my case). They’re great for keeping the sun off, keeping you a bit warmer, keeping you from getting sand rash, great for keeping your bathers together/on, and keeping you a bit safer from stingers. Tshirts work well too but can take longer to dry.
You did great Emma! I rode this in the tropics - much more fun when it's warm, I'm sure. I know what you mean about the steering being kind of counter-intuitive. I know you think you found it hard and scary, but you're a natural. (You know they tell you to get up on your knees to get you to fall off, because your time is up, right? You foiled their fiendish plan!) Never say never again! If you were chuffed at kneeling (as you should be), imagine how you'll feel when you get a good run standing. If I can do it, you can do it - you did way better at kneeling than I ever did!

You MUST at least try "Stand Up"
We only ride the "Stand Up" as we hurt ourselves badly on the boogie boards.
I jumped and hit my thigh on the lip at the top! Had an internal bruise for about a year!
My wife got hit in the mouth by the board, cut lip, bruised etc. It seemed like I had beaten her.
We have seen hundreds of beginners, maybe thousands, and none were as good as you!
Steering the board with only your knees?
I couldn't do that, yet feel very comfortable carving on the Stand Up.

You did really well. It’s odd that they call it a surfing simulator because the physics of it are the complete opposite of actual surfing. When surfing the wave pushes and you ride along.
That Flow-Rider seemed so tricky but you did a great-job; turning-point was when you got on your knees and stabilized-it and I especially liked the part when you got back...

Well done! We watched people of the flow rider whilst on the Navigator in 2017, the experts made it look easy, but everyone else all fell off.
So for a first timer you did amazing.

Ok you were a natural at this!!! So we were on Independence of the Seas in Apr-2019 (our first RCCL ever!!) and I tried flow rider.. Sadly when I tried to get on my knees I wiped out! You should see when I tried the stand up version.. yeah not good! (if bored you can check out our Independence playlist and you'll see my utter fail! haha) Anyway, loved seeing Independence pre-reno! We're really enjoying your vlogs, love the commentary and music choices too of all your vlogs! :-)

I've done it about 4 times, the 2nd time I hit my nose against the floor, they stopped the water flow and made me fill out a report, all good, then they let me cut the line and did it again.

Good job. I would not try this. Very afraid of breaking something. I have tried surfing off Waikiki beach when I was in my teens or early 20s. They were small waves but I did it. I stood up and rode a wave in. When you get older, fear kicks in. I have alot of orthopedic problems with my one leg. Don’t want to make it worse. However it is always nice to try new things.

@Emma, The flowrider is not easy to master. I tried it on Harmony of the Seas and it was difficult. Great job sitting up and getting backdown without wiping out.

I’ve been on 3 cruises and on all of them I went on flowrider and I can now go on my knees and let go and I was terrified

Hi Emma, just subscribed to your Channel. I can imagine how terrified you were but you did very good for your first try. You didn't tumble off the surf board as many have. I can understand why it's your first and last. Unless you're a great surfer in the ocean, it won't be easy. I will never go try it.

Ken we have seen a surfing instructor really struggling to learn.
It is a very unique skill. Everyone has trouble, but the skateboarders seem to do very well.
I understand the waiver, but honestly, how is this dangerous? Seems perfectly safe to me. What could happen other than falling to the ground? It’s just a few feet.
Well Done Emma! I am sure - not having done it myself - that the FlowRider is not an easy thing to master... especially with the water coming at you at 30mph. #GreatJob. :-)
The dis"ABILITY" To Cruise? It isn’t easy at all! I saw all these little kids doing it and though ‘must be easy!’ Nope... haha.
I guess, once you get the hang of it, it isn't too bad... it's just that first hesitant steps you have to take to get good at it. x

Scary! I like warm, calm, flat water. BTW we call that boogie boarding. People here do that in gentle surf, where the ride is short and there's no backboard to get slammed into. "Surfing" for people who can't surf.

You did great, it has nothing to do with weight while kids crash its all about being on the board the right way and weight distribution . You are doing fantastic .
